Great, informative tutorial, Michael. I haven't heard this song in awhile. I was just doing random searches and came across this. I played bass on this album and Jonny's "Wander This World" album. He was 15 when we cut this....17 or 18 on the next. Amazingly talented! An Old Soul definitely lives in him. The energy/passion you see in this video is exactly what he is in the studio. Two of the most enjoyable albums I've ever played on.
Jonny’s an appreciative, humble gifted vocalist and guitarist. I’ve seen him twice at the Schemerhorn in Nashville and he wails live. I’ve heard he cancelled some dates due to problems with his voice. Get well Jonny, we all want to see you performing again soon!
I have only been left awestruck, floored, mesmerized, and captivated all at the same by 2 musicians when I saw them play live. Jonny Lang and Stevie Ray Vaughn.
15 is correct he wrote the lyrics at 14 and first performed it at 15. He said in an interview that he didn’t have a license to drive and buy new strings which he broke often when writing some solo entries. Super cool!
I was 7 when this album came out and Jonny was everywhere lol He was the soul inspiration for me to become a guitarist and I even grew my hair like his lol
All these years later, and this still gives me chills...... I've seen this kid/guy in concert at least 10x's and he never fails to inspire or impress!!! \m/
Seen Jonny many times live and met him last year. He's one of the reasons I play guitar! Thanks for the video, would love to see you do Tyler Childers Shake The Frost!
Have always loved this song, what a freaking groove. Remember hearing it in a very rock/blues dead time in like 1998 and was like "holy crap man this is a fun tune"
So glad you found Jonny Lang. My hubby and I love his music. I've seen 14 of his concerts (one with Sting and Kep Mo in Chicago's outside Grant Park). He signed one of my guitars - I met Jonny 4 times after concerts. He is super nice and kind to his fans. Discovered him when the Blues Brothers 2000 movie came out in 1998 - Jonny is the Custodian performing in 634-5789 at end of movie. A must see. More Jonny Lang tunes I enjoy are: We Are The Same, A Quitter Never Wins, I am (written by Prince), Still Rainin', Wander This World, Make It Move, 1997 version of Lie To Me (at age 16), and many more! You might also enjoy his CD 'LIve at the Ryman Auditorium' (in Nashville, TN). I blast it when I'm out driving around.
Glad you explained what the Wah Pedal does. This Song always reminded me of Guitarist Mick Ronson playing on the Moonage Daydream Solo Love this Jonny Lang Song. That Voice That Guitar. That Ronson Guitar Outro Guitar Solo sings to me
Glad you picked this one! On the Way: I watched to Premier Guitar rig rundown and he uses a Boss dynamic wah pedal. He talks about how it opens up if you intensify the note. Couldn't tell if he used a "regular" on the record, but live it seems he uses the dynamic wah.
Yes man! It works now? Commented on another vid for this. Heard him when I was 9 and I was completely hooked, this is my jam. Super underated singer/songwriter. Great tones and monster player. Cool vid for sure!
I don’t think this CD has been out of my vehicle since I bought it in 1997. Don’t get me wrong-I love new music and seek it out daily, but this album is a personal classic.
Michael ... I gotta say from a personal stand-point "Johnny Lang's" original guitarist Paul Diethelm (aka STRETCH) is the best guitarist I have ever heard in my life and I love seeing him playing in the background of this video ... The guys is an absolute "STONE COLD MURDERING MONSTER" the way he can crush it out in front of a group or in support of someone like Johnny Lang ... He is also a tremendously genuine guy with an unbelievable and kind family ... His story reminds me so much of your story that you have so kindly shared with all of us that have followed you and appreciate the time you put into teaching us and inspiring us numerous times a week ... Thank you Michael ... I love your "PRS Parlor" in that finish ... It must be a great travel guitar !!! Speaking of which check out "STRETCH" w/Michael Shines in this video clip and his hot little parlor guitar !!! #CHEERS !!! th-cam.com/video/299e_dM3auk/w-d-xo.html
Great tune for a 16 year old guitar player of only 3 years... always dug on J Lang, I just never understood how a kid of his age could understand love and relationships quite as much as he did.
Jonny Lang is a humble legend. He is a stonecold gifted blues player just like you said compare to the other indie pop blues guys nowadays lists offer, but very underrated undortunatelly.
I've seen Jonny in concert over 30 times since 1999. He's just an electrifying player live, he puts everything into every concert. The only time I've been disappointed was when he opened for Buddy Guy, it felt like he was holding back for some reason or just hurrying through so Buddy could play. I also love the tone of Jonny's guitar.
He has to or BG gets upset I think or he’s doing it out of respect for Buddy. Because Jonny can blow anybody off the stage with his blues if he wants to.
We saw Jonny in a free concert in Snowmass Colorado ten years ago. He was SO much fun to watch and hear. And the band was Killer'. He had a B3 guy who smoked everything and a second guitar player who was about as good as Jonny. I was impressed with how hard Lang worked. and how committed he was, a truly excellent show, away above the norm. I hope he's still doing well. Touring is tough.
As a young guitar player coming up at the same time as Jonny Lang, KWS, Derek Trucks, John Mayer, etc... I was always partial when it came to blues to Jonny, his songs were actual "songs" (Melody, chord changes, singing, etc...) but his guitar playing is just on point, he pays homage to the past put still clearly has his own voice!
Derek Trucks is a talent like no other on guitar. But when it comes to pure talent singing Jonny breaks all the rules, his guitar playing is instantly recognizable as Lang, he uses that wah so well without depending on it.
I saw Jonny Lang repeatedly as a 7-8 year old, mostly in small bars and clubs in the Pittsburgh area. I'll never forget leaving and seeing him getting onto his bus. My dad was so starstruck that he had his camera in his hand, and shook Jonny's hand with the other. He still talks about missing the opportunity to get a picture all these years later. Another fun fact, Jonny shook with his left hand not his right. We didn't know if he had a reason or if it was just a spontaneous mixup, but I remember it being different. Love your videos Michael, love seeing my childhood brought up again.
thanks for doin this mike, your'e the fuckin man. my grandpa showed me a cassette of jonny back in the late 90s and we used to listen to "rack em up" all the time. im from south dakota and my grandpa lived in north dakota near where jonny is from and he always used to say "watch out for this kid, hes going to be great"..... he was always right :) thanks again mike, lots and lots of great memories with this one
SHAKEY GRAVES - ROLL THE BONES , Tyler Childers is most certainly one of the game changers in this era, hopefully bringing back substance and washing the field of trendy come and go artists. Nose to the Grindstone is a song where your body cannot comprehend the feelings that are drawn up, it induces goosebumps and almost a vomit feeling because that song conjures the purest and rawest feelings that hit the deepest most primal depths of our person. I watched your video of the songs breakdown and I could tell you felt everything I just described. That’s when I subscribed to your channel good sir. You get it. You feel it. What music really is. Thank you.
Saw Johnny and Buddy Guy together in Oklahoma years ago. Such a great show! He wasn't much older than he is in the video here and I swear he played like he was in Buddy's age group. lol
Great reaction video to a song I have liked since I first heard it. 👍 JL generally follows the “rules” but man, you nailed it talking about the waa pedal skills lining up with the vocals and how good the songs are. I think the piano build up and the way the solo drops in on The song Darker Side is another good example of the way his brain works. The rest of the solo isn’t so technically hard but it is so eloquent and interesting. Even after listening to it hundreds of times and learning my own version of it, if I heard it right now I would still smile! While I’m typin, I’ve been listening to a lot of Kings X lately. Maybe a look at Ty Tabors (spelling?) playing would be fun for you and us? Anything from the self titled album (Big Picture or Prisoner- probably my favorite of his solo) or Its Love are a few of my favorites. He’s got a really good ear, lots of skill and uses some cool effects in odd ways. Sometimes he’s got so much compression or sumthin going you can almost hear tubes squealing as they get pinched. The rest of the band is amazingly tight and the vocals are really good too. I just found you channel a few weeks ago and really enjoy it. Thanks!
Then teenagers Jonny and Derek are absolutely two of the best ever. I saw Derek front his own band at age 13 opening for Skynyrd in Atlanta. Nobody knew who he was or his age until after their set. His younger sister and brother and Uncle Butch backed him. Kid tore the roof off the Fox Theater. I can imagine Jonny doing the same at age 14. There are videos of Derek playing live at age 9 with a local band near Atlanta. I had Jonny's first CD and nearly wore it out. When are kids going to stop playing video games and learn something? Oh, right. Teenagers not just playing blues but feeling it and owning it, not just playing the notes. Should be against the law!
When my husband and I were first married, we used to go out and see Kid Jonny Lang and The Big Bang! He was too young to drink in the bars but he was rocking them! ✌️
Your professional guitar course on udemy is simply amazing! It's bit tough for me at the moment, but i guess it'll be worth it! I have a question...Where can i post my doubts/queries regarding the lessons? And also, you keep telling us to post our progress videos after every lesson..i never understood where i can upload them or ask my doubts..Any help would be appreciated! Thanks for the amazing course Mike! I'm so grateful to you! Stay safe :)
That was such a cool guitar store too. I believe it was called Black Market Music now gone btw. Also his sisters as background singers I think and Becca Bramley too. I thought the store was in San Francisco but it may have been in L.A. Fender gives everyone a signature guitar. Doesn’t he deserve one? My favorite is Red Light.
I had realized my mistake of putting the official video and was going to try to replace it quick but I kinda missed the time frame it looks like! Either way, love the video and the breakdown as always!
I really want to thank you for what you are doing, i reallg enjoy everything you do! I’m a beginner guitar lesson and i’m pretty sure that i don’t have a good ear, and i noticed that you said that you knew the key from apllication of basic music theory, so if someone doesn’t have a good ear, can they still find out the keys and start soloing over tracks they never heard before?
Love Jonny Lang! You should listen to Cherry Red Wine from one of his first albums, so much passion! Also, why the hell is there only 750 views?? Is the youtube algorithm screwing you over?
Officially a subscriber now! Any tips for getting thick layers of dust off your guitars? Going to have to re string and clean a few cobwebs off the herd
Backup singer is Becca Bramlett. I love her voice. She is the daughter of the singers Delaney & Bonnie. You should listen to Bonnie's cover of Janis Joplin's Take a Piece of My Heart. It's great.
You should go check out the Avett brother's. All of there songs are wonderful with incredible song wrighting, but my all time favorite is "no hard fealings"
Still haven't worked out the time differences lol Please do an "Empty Rooms" or "Red House" cover by Gary Moore? He frets using almost only two fingers.
I used to shoot pool with his dad at Bunkers bar in Minneapolis when he was a kid playing there. In fact he was then known as Kid Jonny Lang. I think he was 14 or 15 then.
Please do the deep-dive on the wah wah pedal! The nuance of that tool is lost on most, and I'd love to see your take on the finer points of the spectral glide that started with Trumpet and Trombone players using moving mutes, and then electrically expressed by guitarists thanks to Bradley J. Plunkett from Warwick in late '66. Seriously, do that video, and I'll join at the lifetime level.
Yes lest we not forget the dude was 16 when he made this record. Been a huge jonny fan since he came out since he was my age and his voice is awesome and he’s very underrated better than kws if u ask me cuz jonny can sing.
Have you played a Thinline? I thought it would sing, it was an intimidating guitar to make sound bluesy. I’m used to strays with Rosewood, that Thinline gave me new respect for his skills
You're a really good player, Michael. I heard a blues player the other day say Lang is alright but doesn't hold a candle to Bonamassa or KWS. I think Jonny is pretty good though.
I'm dying to hear what your reaction to Milo Jones. Check out "Sandro And The French Guy" or his brilliant Randy Newman cover of "While the City Sleeps".
Love this song, Johnny Lang doesn't get near the recognition he deserves
Paid $35 to watch him in Colorado. Felt like I should have paid ten times that when I left
Real people listening to real musicians "Play" know all about JL !!! Screw the populous
I agree he’s great
i know it is kind of randomly asking but do anyone know a good place to stream newly released tv shows online ?

Actually he was 16
15

Wow!
He also helped out another North Dakota musician, Shannon Curfman. Guested on her debut album, "Loud Guitars, Big Suspicions".
He was actually 15. It was released the day before his 16th bday. Friggin nuts.
@@shitlaryclinton9775 LOL... not at what you said... but your god damn name LMAO

SOOOOOOO Late 90s!
Love this song!!! Enjoyed the walk through it. Thx.
One of the most under rated guitarist of our time
Yep for sure. As soon as they’re not kids anymore they start to get overlooked.
Johnny was 16 years old when he released this album....it's been almost 30 years since this song was released
I hear this song in 1996!!! First time
Was in 1997😊
I saw JL live in 2001 and it was incredible. Im very thankful I was able to go.
