I'm a former active duty Marine. I served during four years of peacetime, so I don't deserve the same accolades that my wartime brothers and sisters deserve. But I still get chills, and my chest heaves with pride when Slaid sings, 'you're running with the few and the proud'.
Great post. I'm a US Navy Vietnam Veteran but my service in no way compares to those "in country". I'm proud of my service but it in no way compares to those who came under enemy fire. I spent 15 months in Iraq as a contractor where we were subjected to rocket attacks which the only live fire I've experienced. Only one of them had me diving for the floor. Ironically I didn't come back with a medal for that one like I did for my time on Yankee Station. 😛
My own father was a ww2 veteran and a welder by trade. Being blown up halfway up monte casino hill gave him enough shakes, to be a great welder(perfect weld weaving), and a bloke that spilled a fair bit of his 3rd pint , for the same reason. Slaid nails the war thing…
I've been sharing this song to help raise awareness of vets returning with PTSD. I think it should be talked about more, they're not gettin the help they need.

The first night I was there, I dreamt about a particular firefight, in which I relived shooting and killing a man. Repeatedly. My grandfather, who had served in France in 1914-15 (and spent the rest of WWI in Egypt and Palestine -- he knew T. E. Lawrence and didn't think much of him) said to me the next morning that I had had a rough night. I said that I dreamt I was back in combat, and asked him. "Do the nightmares ever go away?" He replied, "They will subside, but never go away completely." My cousin, who was a junior officer in the British army at the time, came in and asked what we were talking about. Granddad said, "I hope you never find out." I agreed enthusiastically. (My grandfather was right, the nightmares have subsided, but are not gone.) I have three sons. None of them has ever been in the military. While I do love and respect my country, I refuse to wear my patriotism on my sleeve. If you want to push my berserk button, try waving a flag in my face.
My Brother Luke showed me this guy and this song still fighting the war is talking about someone that is still in the war and fighting for his loved ones. This song is very touching

Give a lifetime (half-pay) pension to every U.S. military member who did one honorable tour of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. You can raise my Social Security tax to pay for it.
When we go to war, we should raise taxes on the wealthy. So the wealthy will use their political clout to end the war as quickly as possible. In addition, the money should go to helping the Vets when they return. Win win, in my opinion.

This song cuts across generations. My dad came home from war in 1945, damaged. 20 years later he couldn't cope anymore.
