Best Types of Food To Bring To Burning Man

  • Food is always a complicated thing at Burning Man. There's limited ways to store it, limited ways to cook it, and anything that goes bad or is leftover is just going to be sitting in your camp stinking the place up for the rest of the week which is no fun at all.
    To try and demystify the types of foods to avoid and what to stock up on I've put together a whole video chatting about food. I hope it's helpful guys!

    We use Barilla Pronto no-boil pasta. It cooks like rice and doesn't produce any grey water. And we use a garlic herb sauce mix that comes in a pouch so no glass jar to deal with. Easy and tasty!

      Oooo I've never heard of no boil pasta I'm going to have to find some of that because the grey water from pasta is the worst, it's so slimy and gross! Thanks for the tip :)

      It's available at Walmart - order online and choose "free in store pickup" in case they're out of stock. Saves a bunch of time vs wandering the aisles

      @projectpterodactyl81  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Brilliant! I was planning to do an online order to pickup in store to save all the wandering around. I feel like when you wander round you end up forgetting so much stuff and buying loads of stuff you don't need, or worse you find they're out of stock of the most important stuff and you have to go to a ton of different walmarts to find what you're looking for :)

    Just because this isn't a thing people often think about: There is powdered milk, half & half and coffee creamer. There is also powdered versions of sauces and condiments you can get such as powdered tomato sauce, powdered onion dip and powdered mayonnaise.

      It's such a cross section of experiences and talents coming together many have only lived in dense urban areas barely enough living space for a bed let alone a kitchen of any size. To those in rural areas that have barns and space for all kinds. Some have camped all their lives and many are young with energy and enthusiasm while experiencing off the grid for the first time. I think these video are a great service for burners and help maintain it's principles. They will prove valuable and pass the test of time. With such a memorable personality.

      I think the hat should be off for you, I just discover your spread sheet was more than one page. Granted women's clothing is important there is so much more, example the classic hand warmer. I was just going to suggest that heater when you need something like a hot water bottle, or something to spread some heat these work , just have one in your pocket or sleeping bag when your cold it will make the difference. Hope it's shared with all burners please keep adding thanks.

    Protip: buy Mountainhouse freeze dried meal packages. All you need is hot water, and you got a full meal in a bag. easiest clean up, barely any moop. Also if you're driving in, hard boiled eggs are really wonderful. great protein. pasta based meals in vaccum bags are the best for pre-prepped meals that you boil in the vaccum bag in water. that and rice/asian dishes. reason being if you lose all your ice/cooling, the meals are probably still okay to eat and aren't gross when defrosted

    I love the tips that you give. I know that when I have gone camping in the past and know that I am going to be really in a rural area I always scrubbed out my coolers really well and made them as sanitary as possible. then, when the ice melted I had additional water to use. a vacuum sealer was always a great way to seal things up and easy to store and carry.

    Hey, thanks... some good ideas below. Couple of things I've found in addition to what you have said. Cook rice pasta at home... they take a lot of fuel to boil esp if its windy. Watermelon, prep at home just bring the meat in a 4 way, clasp Locking tupperwear. Veggies will stay fresh all week in a good 4 clasp/lock sealed, tupperwear. waterproof, they are fine in the water of your ice chest. this will keep your ice chest/cooler fresh all week. Pack your eggs well, easy to break if just in an egg carton. Packaged, sliced cheese or shredded! great as a snack or quesadillas. I ALWAYS bring too much food... NOT THIS YEAR. I keep bread i my cooler. only 4 pieces, usually don't want more then that. Flour tortillas for hummus wrap with veggies, and cedillas. Bring a cup with a handle, carabiner. and easy ID. cucumber and hummus.... BACON!!!!

    I've seen people just bring larger coolers full of gallon bottles of frozen water with food tucked in too. As long as your not opening it to many times a day and its kept in the shade it, it should keep your food cold for 3/4/5 days and ofcourse you get some lovely ice cold water too as the bottles melt :)

    Well one guy mentioned cucumber water and the same with orange, lemon, any fruits! Freezing things also mean less freezer bags, maybe make various water drinks first (as you said) freeze them and as they thaw you have cold drinks and even mixes. You could make some mixes ahead of time thaw and use and mixes make good drinks for the kids and adults that prefer virgin drinks.
    How about this - I challenge people too make the best Virgin drink(s) they can think of for Burning Man Virgins to have! Healthy should be a factor and hydrating as well! To get (hopefully increased) participation, so says the man who cannot have alcohol because he is on a cancer med that will kill him if he does mix the two (no joke, for real)!
    I am sorry if any find this worth any sorrow! I have adjusted to my life, but please make it easier for anyone else to obey need, their beliefs, and just people who might need a change from plan water!

    • @projectpterodactyl81
      @projectpterodactyl81  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I recently gave up caffeine and mainly drink water so I've been using lots of those "jazz up your water" type recipes where you add fruits or dried leaves to water and they are delicious. I really like mint and lemon water, it's nice a refreshing and is great for when plain old water gets a bit boring.
      I love your challenge! I'm definitely going to be trying to come up with some cool virgin concoctions for some virgins haha! What's you favourite virgin drink?
      Hope you feel better soon and best of luck to you!

    Another camp food, my wife introduced me to. Noodle Roni [TM] or similar boxed pasta meal, augmented with a can of chicken or tuna, and some vegetables. In our climate, fresh garden beans or pod peas last a few days. In a hot climate, dried; we have a home dehydrator. My wife gets UTI's when she eats canned veggies, so that's not something we use.

    Thanks for continuing to make these videos! I've been camping with friends to get to experience and work all the kinks out with my gear before going for the first time this year. One thing that worked really well were these breakfast wraps we made in the morning. It was a pouch of freeze dried eggs and bacon from mountain house prepared and then split into 3 small tortillas (about 6 inch diameter) with some shredded cheese sprinkled on top and rolled up. Put those in the pan and cooked on the camp stove - which I learned cooks very hot and fast. They were perfect! One each was nice as it was an experiment, but they were a bit small to make a full breakfast out of so 2 per person is probably just about right. A modification for burning man though may be to substitute the shredded cheese with a few small wax sealed cheese wheels to help with keeping it preserved. A little hot sauce inside wouldn't hurt either. Again, thanks for sharing your experience!

    • @projectpterodactyl81
      @projectpterodactyl81  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That sounds delicious! Good idea with the little wax sealed cheese as well, I've never thought to try those but don't they still need to be refrigerated? I guess they'd stand up pretty well being in a cooler full of ice so seeing as the ice would protect the cheese from getting soggy if any ice water got to them.

    • @TfArREVOLUTION
      @TfArREVOLUTION 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wax sealed cheese doesn't need to be refrigerated, as long as its kept between 35-55 degrees Fahrenheit it'll keep for 25 years, even if its a bit warmer than that it'll be more than sufficient for the week and a half I'll need to keep it. Toss a few little wheels in the cooler and I'll be set!

    • @projectpterodactyl81
      @projectpterodactyl81  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow I never knew that! I found out the other day that honey doesn't ever go bad, archaeologists found honey in ancient Egyptian tombs (I think) that'd been there for ages and it was still good. I might treat myself to some wax sealed cheese to bring along this year. That'll definitely help liven up meals, I blooming love cheese and having pasta without it is such a bummer!

    • @TfArREVOLUTION
      @TfArREVOLUTION 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, a little cheese can probably pick up a lot of basic recipes. The honey part I've heard of before, wax sealed cheese was something I learned researching what foods can be preserved for burning man. One thing I've been wanting to experiment with is pemmican but I don't know if I'll have the time to nail that down in the next 6 weeks.

    • @projectpterodactyl81
      @projectpterodactyl81  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just had to google what pemmican is, I've never heard of it before. It sounds really cool and definitely looks like something that would be really good for Burning Man! When I was googling I saw a couple of places in America that sell it so if you can't nail it before then you could always just pick up some ready made stuff!

  • @22knowa
    @22knowa 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    My wife Faye and I have this 40 acre piece of land on a mt. top in Maine where we lived off the grid for a short while. Food was an ordeal to keep fresh anything with water in it froze and went bad. Although gray water was not an issue we still had to lug water in and that made you not want to waste water. Some of what we would eat were spam macaroni and cheese, spam pie, spam and eggs sandwidges spam all kinds, canned corn beef from Argentina , Tuna, Salmon all kind canned food. We would buy fresh eggs that had not been washed so they would not go bad like the store bought that had not had the natural coating wash off kept them from going bad. I would recommend thing in boiling bags that you save water and reuse. Any way I am hoping to bring a small chest freezer and gift popsicles just got to rig up solar to power it.

    • @projectpterodactyl81
      @projectpterodactyl81  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That sound so amazing! I can definitely imagine that if you've got to lug your own water around it makes it a much more precious resource. I never knew that about eggs! I have chicken so I get my eggs from them but I never realised that the coating was washed off from the shop bought ones. I don't really know how long eggs straight from the chicken last so I tend to eat them or cook them up into a quiche or something the day I collect them. Canned food is def one of my faves as there's so little waste and they don't need to be stored in a cooler or anything special, plus there's the recycle camp for the cans so you're not even left with those filling up your bin :)
      Bringing a chest freezer for popsicles will definitely be a gift people appreciate. Popsicles are like magic out there!!!

    Mountain House Freeze Dried meals would seem the obvious choice to me. There's plenty of variety and they've had decades to get their flavour tasty. Eat it right out of the bag for minimum clean up and lick your spoon clean. All you'll need is water and some method to heat it. That for hot meals anyway. For walk around food and snack, "gorp", mixed nuts and fruit in a bag.

    Better is relative, often I feel like I gave up something for something else! Often I feel like a pressure valve needs to be installed on top of my head it gets so crowed in there.
    Her Flightness has given us mint and lemon as a good example but it also means mint, lemon and water cannot be used alone but only in combination with something like cucumbers (also given as an example not to be used alone.)!
    Thanks for the suggestion like I said very good! I do not think I would have thought of the challenge without the cancer, taking the good with the bad! Thanks also for the vote of confidence regarding the Challenge if you would not have said anything but just thought it was a good idea I don't think many would think as much of it.
    I know it is close to the Burn but can you spread the Challenge around to others who offer advice. Coming from you it many carry more wheight.
    PS. Please notice there is no 'y' between the 't' and the 'n'. You have been ordained Queen of the large flying lizards (do not ask me to spell the word I know it begins with a 'P')!

    • @projectpterodactyl81
      @projectpterodactyl81  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can imagine a pressure valve would be useful!
      I will definitely try and spread the word about the challenge! I'm going to bring along some extra bits and pieces to try and gift some virgin drinks for virgins (and non virgins haha) there's some really cool combinations to make. I want to try and think of cool snacks that would match the drink too because having a drink and a snack is always amazing.
      Being the queen of large flying lizards seems quite fitting seeing as I have a garden full of chickens and I'm pretty sure that historically they used to be some kind of lizards (some of them certainly look pretty prehistorically lizardish!) :) thanks!

    I kind of like pringles as a sort of snack-ish junk food. Probably not the best thing for a hot, arid desert but they're tasty, easy to share and you can use the can as a miniature bin when you're done with it! Handy for disposing of bits of paper or card that can easily be squished down into it. For water, those little concentrated juice squashes are an absolute godsend (like the Robinson's squash'd stuff) for when you need a bit of variety in your beverages.

    That last part🤌🏽🤌🏽 prepping a meal vaccum sealing and keeping a dry ice bin or fridge means you can reuse water to boil those bags in and eat it straight out the bag. Keeps moop and grey water down.
    No fridge but tons of garbage bags?The military makes MREs that come with tons of calories and an excessive amount of very "compactable" moop these meals keep for months no refrigeration needed and have a variety of menu options. A few vegetarian ones and even some halal meals.

    Fruit works out if you're _really thirsty_. When I was a kid we went to Death Valley on Spring vacation. We ate all the melon rinds except the actual skin, apples all but the seeds and stems. And in the arid heat, what was left dried quickly and left little smell. When backpacking (trekking to you) we would have corn on the cob, baked potato, and grilled steaks as our trailhead dinner; the corn and potatoes wrapped in foil and cooked in the coals. We lived on dehydrated food on the trail, freeze dried was in the distant future. Regarding tinned meats, many of them are now available in foil or plastic foil packets. The cost used to be higher than tinned, but I have found a few (pink salmon) the same or less. Less bulk to pack out, and squeezing the last bit our of the packets is easier for me than scrapping a can; and no sharp edges.

    There is the classic army dish shit on a single similar to biscuits and gravy. Stuffe ' makes a good one in a boiling bag along with other bag type meals. Hurmale sales a chipped beef in a small glass jar last for ever make a white gravy. Maybe not be the best for nutrition but sticks to stomach and gets rid old bread and you can reuse the boiling water.

I once sponsored a K-9 program at juvenile prison with six dog from my kennel the youth sleep with their own dogs. Depending what the prisoner got to eat in the morning would later determine how many fights we would break up and with Biscuit and Gravy we always had less fights.

      just think if someone served cookies and gravy.

      I was thinking along the line of boiling bag foods, most of your microwave foods come in black plastic dishes with clear plastic tops seal with nitrogen gas and require you to pierce the cellophane to prevent exploding in microwave. You could save and reuse a pot of boiling water and with out pocking a hole in the meal just boil it as you would the bag. You might wan't get a set of tong so you don't burn yourself taking out of hot water.

      KiwiBanana Yes! Cooked oats soak up all the water in the pan so no grey water. I usually throw in some raisins. Some people like to add cinnamon.

    Jessie I have always wonders what draws all you stunning beautiful women to spend a week intentionally destroying your hair skin lung etc. Living and trying to sleep in hot and cold constant noise, few comforts, eating tasteless crappy food seasoned with dust. Yet you women count the days till going home and you thrive there. I guess its like why women lust for shoes that look great but cause so much pain and discomfort to ware .
