As a combat vet, i can tell you hit the nail on the head. The point of this movie js to showcase the reality and brutaility of war. It isnt taking a side because thays not the point. There is no right or wrong in war and as my NCOs used to say. Your political beliefs will fly right out the window the second bullets start flying at you. In the end the reason the side you stand on doesnt matter because both sides are doing what they think is right and thats what causes the violence. Its why they focused heavily on the sound because one needs to hear the realistic nature of gun fire to grasp how scary it is. Whats honestly more freightening though is there are still mouth breathing morons who will see this movje and still think we need another civil war. What we need is to peaceful resolve our issues, but one side always needs to take it too far, and we can see that with the conflicts happening overseas.
Civil War is a movie with not much of a plot it is about the Horror and Mayhem of a Civil War in modern time. It is not a movie who try to romance war or entertain the viewer. It is not a movie about Politics of who is wright or wrong. It is a movie about Camera lenses in the fog of war.

*Plot:* after events of Captain America Civil War and battle of Golden Gate Bridge, California and Texas declare war on President Ron Swanson which has Vietnam-Afghan War/Cuba-Venezuela War/Finno Korean Hyperwar/WW3/Russia-China War/WW4/North Korea-Iran War veteran Uncle Sam fight in Second, Third, and Fourth American Civil War against Bunker Hill, the Alamo, and Harpers Ferry separatists with Broadway’s and Hollywood’s militas
Initially, California and Texas were their own, separate political entities. But after the backlash from the trailer, the politically-ignorant filmmakers thought audiences would like to see Cali & Texas as allies against the post-J6 3rd term autocratic "president" who refuses to go to a bunker for safety. i love the wizard of oz model. dorthy (girl from missouri/the not kansas state), Old reporter (scarcrow wisdom character), younger reporter (thrill seeker facing his real fears but self medicating to hide his fears), lee is the tin man (hard and mechanical) the meeting the wizard in oz even having a fake wizard moment with limo scene and the group going behind the curtain. the fly monkeys being two asians driving like maniacs was uncomfortable. also, its a dark comedy with some genuinely funny moments
Trust me this movie is a good movie and a great time! Watched it last night. The Jesse Plemmons cameo is pretty hilarious and terrifying at the same time.
Incredible Review. I truly felt like I'd done another tour overseas. This was made by some of my former boss's and I couldn't be prouder of them for this MASTERPIECE
The movie was very light on plot and character development which normally would make a bad movie but in this case I think he was going for a meta-metaphor. We see a collection of disconnected vignettes without context through the lens of the characters in exactly the same way that people see a series of disconnected images without context through the individual photos that war photogs send home.
Take a look at the 2001 documentary “War Photographer” about James Nachtwey it seems like this film might have borrowed elements. I’m curious what you think of you’ve seen it or after you see it. It’s a great doc regardless.
Literally nothing is explained in the movie and that's the point. You're seeing a street level view of the world in the same way a travelling photog would - no backstory, no context - just momentary experiences.
In their travels, the main characters come upon new characters and they (including you, the viewer) cannot tell if the new folks are "good" or "bad." But when you come across guys wearing Hawaiian shirts & military gear -- you kinda know. 🙂
A24 have quite a history of movies along this movie. Its not a sequel to Leave the world behind. Its more like the 2018 film they made called Into the Forest. were the whole nation suffers a EMP.event. And The Survivalist. the new zeland film which shows a man living in a shed in the forest growing a survival garden. A24 films show the aftermath of Apoclypse or war... at our level, not make believe but things that could happen
I stand corrected, the movie The Survivslist is from Ireland. has sort of road warrior hint, there is another movie of that title. but this one is more raw, they dont hesitate to show the life of some guy living alone in a survival shelter, a shed in the woods. its not a fave of the american soft, they show some harsh things which you probably will have to over come if you bug out..its more on the level of reality in a whole.world war if you head to the hills to survive.
I saw the movie and was very disappointed. The movie felt empty. The journalist were not portrayed well. One can show types of motivations of individuals, without picking a political side. My family moved to Canada to escape civil war, and there are many better movies that show what war is like better. This was made by people who have seen pictures of other conflicts and then recreated them, and slapped some non-sense road trip to make an excuse to show them. I appreciate crucial role that journalist can bring by bringing attention to conflicts being ignored, saving lives by documenting political prisoners, and defying censorship to show sides of the war that are being hidden. Conversely, journalists can also be complicit in the machinery of the war. Showing a difference between a free lance journalist vs an embedded journalist would have been an opportunity. But the journalists here had no motivation besides getting a picture. This was not showing journalist who were neutral. It showed them apathetic. Also found that this was showing more a state of anarchy than a civil war. . People don't just start war for the sake of killing. Without showing reason for people taking arms, I don't think it really shows how it can happen anywhere. Can still be neutral by still showing some general motivations: I lost my family to that side, military is the only meal ticket, we need to prop up this leader because our groups position in society depends on them, we are a the bottom and see no options for upward mobility, we we lost or risk loosing property or status because of the other side, if I didn't join a side I might be targeted by both, so felt I had to join, non-violent protest didn't work and were met by violence, so the armed approach seemed like the only option, this side gave me purpose, etc. These are general themes that motivate people in all sides of conflicts. The tone, score and musical choices were unbalanced. I felt more like I was watching Twister. The reporters being like the meteorologist risking their lives by going into a dangerous situation. The civil war was the twister. Yes you saw the power of destruction, but it's not a cautionary tale, it's just a plot device to give some peril to our action junkies. Ye it was not a very exiting movie. It also doesn't feel like warfare from this period, or scale that a military conflict in US would have.
I agree. I won’t refer to this as a movie in the traditional sense. It’s more of series of vignettes strung together to evoke emotion. Now it does this very well but it is not entertaining or enjoyable.
The premise of the movie is ridiculous. It’s equivalent to a group of neutral let’s say Swedish journalists driving through Germany in April 1945 to do a photo session and an interview with Hitler. Obviously they would have gotten killed and obviously Hitler was too busy at that moment to do interviews with some random journalists who are knocking on the door of his bunker.
Thematically it's reflecting how journalists document war/conflict zones, so I think the division is coming from people projecting their expectations on it instead of receiving the film for what it's actually saying.
The film comes in at the end of the war. You see the aftermath, how some towns they are trying to keep the American way of life, trying to go about normal life. They show the left side , the implications and dangers of that far left and they show the far right extemists, the danger that presents. The journalists at that point of the war are not obligated to hold back information. Whereas right now , our journalists are instructed not to report the truthful situations...thats the main point you to see, and you do see the journalist truth at the very last scene when they capture the president. The movie is not a victory of the political stance of what we have right now. The president in the movie took away our american rights, so it sort of portrays the Americans winning over what issues we face today.
I must add this.. the jornalists are not on CNN side. They are reporting for Rueters, they say it several times. Rueters is more independant, they often report truth of what is really happening not skewed by political paying them off... favortism of political side. There is no gayyes, no trans nothing to suggest any president. The civil war movie is about politicians breaching our constitution, changing our Amendments, so it has nothing to do with CNN narritive. Its about Americans taking back their freedoms..not some trans celebration time
I felt like it made sense.... I dont know how much it pertains to how they are portrayed in the film, but in real life, California is home to a TON of conservatives. Yes, LA, San Fran, and San Diego are definitely democrat strongholds... but in between those cities, in my experience, many of the people lean to the right.
Why would Texas and California unite against a common enemy? Perhaps the enemy is sooooo bad that joining is the lesser of 2 evils! Remember that in WW2 America was allied with the Soviet Union under Stalin against Hitler. That did not mean the USA and USSR agreed with each other, it only meant the enemy was THAT BAD!
I thoroughly enjoyed "Civil War." It's definitely in my top three favorite movies of 2024 thus far along with "Dune 2" and "the Monkey Man." This was another good movie review. A24 is on a roll! They are by far my favorite movie studio. As an aspiring actress I hope to work with them multiple times in the near future. ❤❤❤❤🎬🎥🎟️🎞️🍿
