Great job bringing the Bouvier to the spotlight. It should also be noted that these dogs are considered to be non-shedders. That is a great asset for people looking for a larger sized protection dog but may have allergy concerns. Also, in this video, people don't get to see the Bouvier in it's more traditional coat. They usually have a "beard" and are a little bit more imposing as opposed to the trimmed coat of Chief. These dogs can be stubborn but once trained they are fantastic dogs that most people never see coming. Excellent video.

They're beautiful dogs, I love their look with their full coat. The owner of the dog Chief states in the video that he got him 2 years ago so he isn't a pup anymore. He definitely should have his beard and full coat by now. They must be keeping his coat short for some other reason.

    • @notsosilentmajority1
      @notsosilentmajority1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      counselthyself
Yeah I watched the video again and you are correct. He said he got the dog 2 years ago from a breeder in Virginia. So Chief is at least 2 years old and should have his full coat and beard by now. They must have a reason for keeping his coat that way but they really do look awesome with their groomed coat and beard.

My family has had bouviers my whole life. They are so underrated when it comes to their fierceness and protectiveness. I'll be honest, Chief doesn't look HALF as fearsome as the dog's I've owned and known. He's small and the haircut makes him look kind of poodle-like, but I'd STILL be scared of him if he charged me! But man these dogs have POWER. Our 10 year old dog suffered illness in his old age that caused him to turn on me-- I ended up hospitalized: staples in my head, permanent damage to my bicep, and would have killed me if my father had not stepped between us in SECONDS. Perhaps that's morbid but in a weird way it made me realize just how dangerous they can be. I imagine that amount of power turning on an intruder and I can't help but feel safe. I work at a vet clinic and my boss has owned 4 in her life. The two she owns now are so ferocious when it comes to guarding her property and our clinic. My boyfriend accidentally snuck up on one of them and I didn't think he was going to leave with all of his limbs. One way I find they also stand apart from other dogs is how they PLAY. Anyone who has owned more than one at a time/ has let their bouv play with other's knows that they play ROUGH. I remember visitors used to get so freaked out when our two boys started playing because it sounded like they were killing each other! Then when I met my bosses dogs, I noticed the same thing. They charge each other at max speed, grab each other's limbs/knock each other down.. They're a flurry of teeth and fluff HAH! But they REALLY are a dog that needs a CONSISTENT and COMMITTED owner when it comes to training. An untrained bouvier is a liability imo. They need focus but when raised right they really are a fearless dog.

My family got a bouvier puppy when I was in kindergarten, and she was HUGE - about 85-90 lbs when she was not at ALL overweight, got over 100 when chubby. Biggest head you've ever seen, and when you stopped petting her she would just drop her head back onto your lap like a boulder. She was a hoot. Very smart and lots of personality, but dependable, the kind of dog you could walk without a leash because you knew she would come catch up with you when she was done sniffing whatever tree.
Bouviers are definitely intimidating just by their build and look, and also their bark - very loud, very deep. Once my uncle was going to stay with us and his flight was getting in super late, so my Mom just hid a key for him and told him to let himself in. He knew this dog. He adored this dog, and she adored him. But he told us later that when he got there at like 2 AM and was unlocking the door, he looked up and she was in the kitchen, just staring at him. Didn't bark, just watched him. And he stood there for several minutes seriously considering whether he should open the door. Eventually he did and she greeted him with a wagging tail. She knew who he was. She was just making sure that HE knew that SHE knew he was there.

Have my third Bouv now from the same breeder as this dog. Great dogs. Huge pain in the ass though. High drive, very protective. Not as neurotic as the Mals, but slower to train than GSD’s.

I’ve got a 2.5yr old male from Carla as well. Lots of drive and very protective but he’s a pretty easy dog to keep in the house compared to most Mals. He’s definitely aloof around strangers but under control and easy to take out in public as long as people don’t try and touch him. 😂😂

The bouvier isn’t a well known breed over here in the states. As for myself, I’ve just began to learn about them over the past summer bc of this page. I’ve fallen in love with this breed and this is definitely the dog that I want for my family. This video gave me the insight that, with the proper training and time, they will definitely will offer the protection that I want for my family when it comes to our canine companion. Great video, Zeke!! Thank you again for your work ✊🏾✌🏾

My Male Bouvier Merlin is an all around dog for us in Maine. He is an excellent PPD being bold confidence without being over the top. Alert barking but serious stack and stare without the big deal behavior when someone new comes on the farm. Excellent farm dog around our sheep and chickens with serious determination to catch the occasional coyote that gets to close. As a sport dog his agility in French Ring Sport demands were there jumping 1.2m high jump, 2.3 m palisade and 4.5m long jump with 4.7m during practice. Achieved his FR2 @ the age of 6 years and made the podium in all three classes. He was short on pints for his FR3 attempt. He is now 8 years old (retired from FR) and cross training for his PSA PDC/PSA1. Focusing on his targeting is a challenge for my decoys, but he is getting it. Demands a different approach in training by not bringing the defense out to soon.

As if the grip was just part of the work, not the whole job. I was also surprised to hear that one dude say that the Buvs extra size didn't make any difference. I live in AZ and was thinking about getting this breed. The giant schnauzer was my 1st pick but due to having a VERY VERY high drive, I thought this dog may be more my speed. I want a protective dog with a medium to high drive, preferably hypoallergenic, but I'm worried about the bouvier's heat tolerance. I noticed they have this bouvier out in the heat, so I'm curious to know, what is their true heat tolerance. A lot of different sights say they can't really handle the heat which I believe, however, I had a dutchie who could only tolerate 45min of vigorous exercise in blazing sun [which was expected and note: 30 min of exercise in the heat was good enough for me at the time]
I have a large yard with a big tree for shade, so I wonder if this dog would do good in AZ or should I just stay the course and get a GS?

From the 1971 Sports Illustrated Vault: an interview/story/article of a Bouvier des Flandres breeder:
Nobody Touches Me With Impunity (wothout consequences/repercussions/punishment/vengeance/strike-back)
The site heading begins with a part of the article, letting us know that the bite force of a Flanders cattle dog (bouvier means cattledog) is 1000 pounds per square inch. He must be trained to do this because they are people friendly, like a pit bull that has NOT been mistreated and got his feelings hurt by humans and therefore wants to bite everyone he sees after that- if feeling threatened, many breeds are defensive biters or just hormonal, but back to facts in the facts in the article:
It only takes 300 to 350 pounds per square inch to break a human bone (perhaps a forearm or an ankle it bites). I laughed when I read in the article that they paid villains $4 an hour back then for suit sessions . Lemme spellit out for ya, 4our dollars!
Anyway it is a very very very very interesting article full of facts anecdotes and knowledge as well as Abady's views on AKC, dog shows, breeding, nutrition, condition and training. I absolutely adored the dog stories he told in the interview. Some of you may think what you're reading is boring but please read on until you get to the "motorcyclist" (dude was a biker-SOMEbody was being polite!) and the Dr. walking in Central Park and the guy who tried to get into his car one night...
I wish I knew how to link the article or tell you how to find it, the best I can do is this: I looked up "bite force of a bouvier des flandres dog" on Google. And I gave y'all info up top, so read up on this guy Abady, his kennels. I want 1 or 2 of his trained dogs and you may want to too when you get rich.

I own one and it's a great dog. Velcro like for sure, and is a true protector. Not for the faint of heart though.

I've encountered lots of Boerboels while living in South Africa. If it's being used for protection sport, that means it's being bred away from its original purpose. They're supposed to just hang out on the farm and occasionally murder a threat. They're not supposed to be hanging on a leash and trying to bite a guy just because he's wearing a suit. They're pretty relaxed dogs. The ones I've met were also surprisingly sociable with other dogs, compared to other guard dogs. (Though I'm not sure if that's a breed thing, or just because the ones I've met were extremely well socialized.)

I would like to learn about the life of a trainer, handler, decoy, helper. Who are they, why, when did they start, physical and mental prep. Are there any women?

Question for the decoy . What can you do solo with my personal dog to work on personal protection. I have a working line German shepherd ,DDR bloodlines .He has had a little training but he is 10 months . He is slow on his aggression maturity. He plays more than anything doing bite work. I’m trying to get that defense drive up without putting to much pressure on him, since he is a young shepherd . I’ve heard you can’t be to pushy on them early on . May or may not be true. Any suggestions ?
