    Awesome. 1994 was very nearly peak civilization. It's been almost entirely downhill ever since. We were living our best lives & didn't even know it. 1 thing that hasn't changed though ; Kenny Hamilton, the old dog is still ripping up the track with his Super Mod @ Meridian Speedway. There's literally nothing better than a hot saturday night at the track when the Super Mods are in town.

    Super modified’s we’re developed in Michigan . They were old Indy roadsters at first. They invaded Oswego speedway in the early 60’s . Nolan swift Jim Shampine Todd Gibson Bentley Warren raced Oswego. Shampine built the first radical offset in 1975 . They remain the same today. This race is a poor example of what super racing is. Search Oswego Speedway here on TH-cam

      yea they got some interesting cars in michigan, like the winged latemodels they run at crystal sometimes, that have the giant sail or bilbord on the side to help with turning, and all kinds of concoctions winged outlaw cars and things, though them being out of old indy roadsters would explain why they look like the beautiful old watson roadsters with a wing on them, though kind of looke like something from mad max in the thunderdome.

      I'd like to correct you on one thing; The first Michigan cars to race at Oswego were hybrids, tube frame, sheet aluminum bodies. Art Bennett from Battle Creek was the first to introduce a Super to The Steel Palace in the beautiful Behnke Spl #14. Gordy Johncock from Hastings, his cousin Nolan Johncock, Nellie Ward, Johnny Logan, Johnny Benson Sr are just a few of Michigan drivers who were winners at Oswego. I believe that Oswego Speedway was paying $600 for a regular feature win in 1962. That was a lot of money back in those days. The roadsters came a few years later. I live in SW Michigan and have made the trip to Oswego a few times. To me it is the mecca for supers.

    This was always the problem with the supers on Phoenix- you could either see a fantastic race- or a crash fest. The cars were cool, but had no business on a one mile racetrack without the downforce of the full size wing.

    • @werxed7289
      @werxed7289 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      wrong a full size wing would make them even slower too much drag the wings they have produce plenty of down force for with the speeds they were running

    • @saragrant9749
      @saragrant9749 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@werxed7289 the full size wing was dangerous, producing so much drag on the mounts that there was a danger of the wing being ripped right off. This comes from several different drivers and teams who actually ran at Phoenix, both from the east and west coast. The smaller wing was necessary to alleviate this issue. Unfortunately the downside was less downforce, which is the cornerstone of these cars.

    Sadly, just a few months later Rebel Jackson Sr. would be killed at Portland Speedway

      In a super? I’d never heard about that! That really stinks. Now Rebel jr is gone, but from cancer.

      @rcdyer 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@saragrant9749 sadly yes. He came out of retirement I think it was his second race. Rebel Jr. was in the race as well and went on to win it. He said he knew his dad would want him to finish the race no matter what. And sad to learn about Rebel Jr. I didn't know that he was gone now, too

    • @saragrant9749
      @saragrant9749 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@rcdyer that’s a really sad story- but really nice to know how he decided to continue and then win for his father like that… takes real grit and guts. Rebel Jr was (I think) last year or the year before when I heard about it. Rebel jr came to the northeast where I’m from a number of times and was always a welcome addition to any ISMA event he competed in. Quite often he’d drive Bruce Budnick’s beautiful blue #88 car. Either that or a team car to Pat Abold. Best run he had was actually at Thompson back in 1995 (I think anyway) where he finished fourth after starting way back in the field, something like 21st- gave the crowd quite a show!

      @@saragrant9749 Yes, sadly he passed last summer. I used to live not from them in Washington near Seattle/Tacoma area. Always pulled for them in the super modifieds. They raced some at Spanaway Speedway as I recall until it closed in 2003
