11:16 The lower level light as you walk in in the middle of the night is exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks for showing it's possible to set up that!
Ive tried a few different systems. Kasa gets it on 3 levels. 1: cost effective, 2 : ease of use with reliable app that works, multiple devices for different needs such as a full array of switch variations and even basic switched "plug in " type outlet .
Just went through several ES20M switches - NO MOTION DETECTION! If your motion detection isn't working follow these steps: 1. Remove the device from your Kasa app, 2. hold down the reset button found on the front bottom of the switch for about 10 seconds to reset the switch, and then 3. re-add the switch to the Kasa app and motion should now work. Did this multiple times today after talking to TP-Link support.
Great video Brett! I have two and they are amazing. Very underrated product once you truly get the smart controls down. The fact that they hold the brightness makes me prefer these to the Lutrons I have in the kitchen. Keep up the great work!
Motion switches have been around a long time for turning a light on and off. Remember those annoying floodlights outside that use to get stuck on during the day :) The thing smart devices can do is have different schedules, so if you get up in the middle of the night, the light can come on dim and not blind everyone, can be bright during the day when you need extra light and if it has a humidity sensor can turn on the fan. That's when things just start getting smart. Anything less is just a glorified remote control.
Thanks for your timely review! We're remodeling a bathroom, so I'll be getting this switch to control the vanity lights. One Kasa feature you didn't highlight: If you want, the app will lead you step-by-step through the installation process. I bought a Kasa smart dimmer switch. I had never done any wiring and was uncertain (neutral wire? whazzat?) but I decided to try the app's "Wiring for Dummies" feature. It really is idiot-proof. I bought a $10 voltage detector as they recommended, and installation was easy. Now I can use Alexa to control the sconces by my bed without walking across the room to the switch.
Could I use the motion sensor to activate a smart light other than the built-in dimmer? I want to install it on my bedroom and hopefully create the following routine: - During the day, if the motion-sensor picks up any movement it will turn on the bedroom lights. - Between 23h and 6h I want the motion sensor to turn on the hallway lights outside my bedroom, just in case me or my wife have to get up at night.
Great Video. Is there a way to to have it turn on and stay on. For example if it sences movement between 7 and 11 pm to stay on and turn off automatically at 11:01?
Great review, Bret! I was actually thinking about getting this, so your review was very helpful. I know you said Smartthings doesn't recognize the motion sensor but does Alexa? I'm wondering if there's a way to create a routine that when I say "Alexa, it's shower time" it will change the auto off timer to either off or increase the time.
Awesome! Been waiting for something like this to come out. This would be great for a storage room as I find myslef constantly walking in and out of mine with my hands full. Just found it on Amazon.. ordering mine asap. Thanks!
15:25 that’s the issue I am having right now. When you’re behind a glass door. The PIR cannot detect your present. I need a motion sensor that will work with kasa smart switch. I would place the motion sensor inside the shower to prevent auto shutoff.
I know the full potential of this switch is when you have it connected to wifi but if for some reason your wifi goes out the the motion sensor as well as the other features like on and off work?
am i able to choose a specific day where i want the switch to only be in manual mode? for example let’s say i want it to be exclusively manual mode (no motion) on Friday from 7pm until Saturday at 2pm - is there a feature that allows me to set it up that way?
I am looking to control home theater lighting (sconces, LEDs, ceiling). Do I only need 1 of these dimmers and link them in the app to the other smart switches (already installed) or do I need 3x of these dimmers? How do I know if this dimmer will detect my other switches? Do they have to be Kasa brand or any smart switch linked to my Google assistant?
Can you set it to get alerts if motion is detected, maybe through a third party app if not through kasa? In a front entrance setting that might be good.
Is there a way to quickly disable the motion sensor in case you want the light to stay on for hours? let's say you're working on repairing a sink or the toilet and you don't want the light to turn off
The most comprehensive app I've ever seen, very neat, and thanks again for sharing this. 👍 Are they also in European form? Here we have the switches square .
Europe uses 86mm wall panels, but there is almost no neutral wire inside the box and can't be installed. If you want to use smart switches in Europe, you can choose Tapo S210/S220.
Nice thorough, quick review of Kasa motion sensor. (Subscribed!) I see Kasa is sold with a thicker (or deep) cover plate and you replaced it with a double plate that is deep. Could you have used a standard double cover plate? Minor item is given the flexibility of the system but I'd prefer consistency in cover plates.
Thx for the thorough video Bret. One question, does the motion sensor picks up motion of doors or other objects? Or does it need heat motion (a body)? Hope you can test.
I am using a TP-link Motion activated dimmer switch KS220M, ES20M in my bathroom. I would like to set up a routine using my Alexa Voice activation to communicate through the switch using the word “shower”. What I would like the routine to do is when I am ready to take a shower, I would like for the light to stay on for at least 15 minutes or longer. When I'm in the shower the light keeps going out after one minute, and I must constantly wave my hands to trigger the motion detector to get the light to turn back on while I am in the shower. Is there a way that I can create a routine to trigger the light for the light to stay on while I am in the shower for at least 15 minutes or longer. I am also using a Smart Things controller as well as Alexa.
What’s the right-hand switch for? Everything you mentioned seemed to be controlled by the sensor/dimmer on the left side of the panel, you didn’t mention anything on the right hand side.
Hi Bret, my question is a bit off topic. I've bought a camper from the 90's ist a Chevy tropical 290. Like I'm a big fan of automatisation I would like to automate my van. So it would be awesome if you could make a video about camper automatisation.
Wow, that is a very great quetion. I would have to do some learning but I think you might be ablet to find some good videos out there now that many are using Vans and trailors to live in.
Great video Brett thank you.... I just got one of these units and I’m about to install it in my office.... This will be perfect for the way that I come in and leave the lights on And leave for two or three hours..... I was wondering if it would be possible to hook the light and the fan together since you’re in the bathroom and have them both come on at the same time Off of that one switch?
That's a good question. Are you doing this with a similar fan or a ceiling fan? I haven't tried linking separate light circuits to one switch so I'm not sure how that operates. If you are trying it with a light/ceiling fan combo you might run into some issues with the dimmer. There is a model without dimming that might work better.
@@TechWithBrett I was thinking that you have yours installed in the bathroom and you most likely have an exhaust fan switch in the same gang plate. Since the exhaust fan is not a variable switch, I wonder what would happen if you just put it in the same load line with the light. Theoretically when the light comes on from the motion detector, then the exhaust fan would go on too.
The KS200M can control the fan switch, but the dimmer switch (KS220M/ES20M) cannot control the fan. The dimmer uses a triac and is most likely not compatible with the fan.
I believe it is because I had the turn off time to only 30 seconds and during that time I didn't do enough movement to for it to sense me to restart the turn off time.
I just installed in my bathroom. My 3 year old can't reach the light switch so this was my answer. She is too short for the sensor to pick her up. So purpose defeated. It does work for us taller people fine though
He's a very smart man. Now if this could be installed in a bathroom and somehow in the app it could realize it's 2am and only turn the lights on 10%. When I gotta pee in the middle of the night..

Samsung has discontinued their SmartThings hub. Although, the Aeotec Hub is essentially the same product. It is able to connect with zigbee and zwave devices, and use the SmartThings app. I have been using it for two months and I love the reliability, and the ability to work with different devices like the ikea tradfri button which is very cheap. The smartthings app is also very easy to use, and you are able to add wifi compatible devices with it if you already have a few to create automations completely in the app. Also, it works with google and Alexa, so whatever devices you add, you can control via Alexa or Google Assistant. Overall, I think it is a great hub.
no but there is a work around... If your switch wire has a ground wire with it you can in fact tag off to the ground with the neutral and if the ground is truly grounded back to panel it will work just fine. Not recommended of course but will in fact work in a pinch. The good thing is that the smart switch uses very little power to operate so theres really no threat .WOULDNT RECOMMEND on an average install but if theres no other option it will in fact work reliably.
In one of my bathrooms I'm actually using a humidity fan switch where it automatically turns on if it senses humidity and then will automatically turn off with a timer: geni.us/lpLTK2T The other options would be to use a Smart things Hub and get a Motion Sensor and a Fan compatible switch to automate over SmartThings.
