  • Traveling back from Batangas you must stop at Twin Lakes in Tagaytay! We chose to dine al fresco style at Bag of Beans while enjoying breathtaking views of Taal Lake and volcano. It's a highly visited tourist spot and also very popular for those traveling through Tagaytay on their way back to Manila. We also made sure to stop for some pasalubong in the form of Buco Pie from Cecilia's.

Legends about how towns in the Philippines got their names have the same pattern, so if you heard of one from the list below, you are a victim of the "tour guides" concocting their own stories.
    1. The native was asked by the Spaniard about the name of the place, the native didn't know what the foreigner was talking about, the native will answer back, the Spaniard thought that it was the name.
    2. The native was asked by the American about the name of the place, the native didn't know what the foreigner was talking about, the native will answer back, the American thought that it was the name.
    3. The native was asked by the Japanese about the name of the place, the native didn't know what the foreigner was talking about, the native will answer back, the Japanese thought that it was the name.
    4. They will divide the word into syllables, and will give meaning about them and will create stories out of it.
One of the victims of that name legend is the Alabang District in Mandaluyong, the local government in official gazette stated that Alabang was named after "abang" or "waiting" due to numerous bandits in that area during the Spanish era. Actually it was derived from the creek running in that area named after the "Duque de Alba", eventually to "Rio de Alban", to Rio de Alabang, to Alabang-Mangangati River.

It's my first time to hear that story about how Tagaytay got its name. Maybe a new version will come out later where the son invited his father for a drink. Tagay (drink [usually associated with alcohol]) tay (short for tatay/itay or father). So Tagaytay can mean "Drink (alcohol) father".

    • @LLVT
