Art Historians just like Art Critics often read and analyze more into a work of art way beyond the artists intention - be patient with these lengthily explanations. Artists more often paint a scene the scene which may have moved them in a deep way, not for underling psychological meanings but only for his visual response. And usually what they see is not some great psychological manifesto, not even an unconscious one. The artist may move an object or eliminate something that they are painting to create a better composition or mood. Some examples of my criticism are; the backyard in Brooklyn with the furniture which was most likely set up by the family just like we do in our own backyards and not just by the artist for the painting. Also the psychological meaning to the road that slopes upward - probably that is what the road actually did in the park, and the building at the end of the walkway - all these are not placed the by the artist for a device or have psychological meaning which this historian talks about. We all can conjecture and make up interesting talks and psychological projections, but take it with a grain of salt unless the artist himself say the painting has those meanings!

I believe you to be correct in many instances, however, often a picture is composed in a obsessive way, particularly academically trained artists working representaionally. I do disagree completly with the conflation of some attributes with modernity. Influence of symbolist painters of his era nearly certain though however.

I hope that other speakers learn a lesson that ones own political beliefs haven't a place when speaking to an audience of probably mixed political beliefs. It made her look foolish since her statement didn't age well.

I enjoyed it, but did the speaker really have to make a political statement near the end? Jeez, isn't there anywhere that we can escape politics, even a lecture about art???????

Clearly, her statement didn't age well. I hope she has learned her lesson.
