  • Congress has finally done something interesting! Also, Stephen does not want to live in a world where Paul Ryan gets to decide what's on television.

    Stephen Colbert took over as host of The Late Show on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015. Colbert is best known for his work as a television host, writer, actor, and producer, and best known for his charity work teaching English as a second language on Tunisian date farms. Prior to joining the CBS family -- and being officially adopted by network president Les Moonves -- Colbert helmed “The Colbert Report,” which aired nearly 1,500 episodes and required Stephen to wear nearly 1,500 different neckties. The program received two Peabody Awards, two Grammy Awards, and several unwelcome shoulder massages. It won two Emmys for Outstanding Variety Series in 2013 and 2014, both of which appear to have been lost in the move. Colbert is pronounced koʊlˈbɛər, according to Wikipedia. His understudy is William Cavanaugh, who will be hosting The Late Show approximately one third of the time. Good luck, Bill!"

      because this issue about gun violence is about all 3 things you just mentioned? NRA and military industrial complex puts huge amounts of money into politics to buy politicians to corrupt them from serving in the best interests of their constituents that results in ceaseless gun violence and thus creating and sustaining a massive public health risk to the population.

    Why are people talking about Jon's mic? Some talk show hosts have another guy that they play off of usually sitting on the couch or something like Andy Cohen for Conan. And Colbert is pretty clearly talking to him sometimes, so I dunno. Not a big deal.

    When it comes to passing any sort of meaningful legislation that would help the average person, the GOP has been sitting on its ass for years. If it is not about trashing affordable health care, denying a woman’s right for having an abortion, or cutting taxes for the Koch Brothers, GOP representatives don’t care.

    • @AllWIllFall2Me
      @AllWIllFall2Me 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Essentially, a large number of British citizens have voted to leave the EU due to concerns about freedom of movement guaranteed to EU constituents, and...well, really, that's the only viable complaint. Most of the others are heavily contentious in terms of what factual analysis can prove. (The leave campaign asserts that, within a few years, Britain will be better off than it is as part of the EU, but while it has some studies to suggest this, there are a large number that contradict it.)
      However the biggest effects are that A, by having a financially stable and productive country leave the EU, the entire arrangement has been weakened. As a simple analogy, It's like if a skilled member of a band leaves, or if you were planning a trip with 4 friends, and one had to drop out. Sure, you can probably soldier on, or replace the absent member, but for at least a while, there's going to be doubt, and reduced ability to handle issues. That's what it will do to the EU: make it appear to be a less effective or productive institution, potentially start a domino-esque effect where more countries leave, eventually dissolving the institution.
      The other major thing it's going to do is heavily complicate life for Britain, as a series of small issues just became larger. One is that, given the state to which globalization dominates the world, Britain's step toward isolation has dropped confidence in its markets, hence why the British pound lost 14% of its buying power last night. There will now need to be passport inspection centers when crossing from Britain to the mainland Europe, and even between Northern Ireland, and the Republic of Ireland. Further, Scotland's response has been belligerent, and may lead to it abandoning the UK.
      However, Britain will be able to achieve what seems to be one of the major goals of the Leave campaign: tighter immigration control. Basically, if you live in an EU country, and want to move to another one, the process is fairly simple, treated much as moving from one state to another is in America. There's some paperwork, new licenses and so on, but it's not the kind of hassle immigrants face. And many British voters wanted tighter immigration controls, due to a sense of "losing their national identity", or fears about radical Muslims moving from EU states with less rigorous immigration checks or requirements.
      To put it in a pop cultural frame: this is like Zayn leaving one Direction. It casts doubt on either party's ability to continue producing with anything like their former ability, but it does allow the exiting member more control of their endeavors. It also means that, should they fail, it's totally on them, but maybe it's worth the risk. We won't know for some time.

    • @AllWIllFall2Me
      @AllWIllFall2Me 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Quick correction to my post: I had a digit wrong in my pound calculations, so the actual loss of buying power is around 9%, not 14%.

    Personally, I think Colbert just needs to get laid.

    Stephen is a practicing Catholic yet has increasingly leftist views. Note: see this comment if you need reassurance that we can all, religious or not, have a progressive way of thinking. Not saying religion and politics peacefully coincide often, but it's not impossible.

      Maybe Stephen just strikes a cord with me because I was also raised as an Irish Catholic, the difference being I don't practice any religion besides possibillianism

    Dear Colbert,
    If you're going to behave like a liberal shill on your show, please just wear a shirt reading "liberal shill."
    Thanks
