Not at all, toxic gasses are only produced when you _burn_ plastic, just melting it like this is fine.

renboy 1 And factory made furniture doesn’t need gas-powered machinery or vehicles to get to your house vs building it from repurposed/local lumber? I know I’m oversimplifying things, but I don’t see how this isn’t the greener solution.

I was just searching for ways to melt plastic bottles as a substitute for hot glue gun glue (I know you can turn bottles into ribbons, and there’s an artistic “3D printing pen” that recycles bottles for art, but that doesn’t mean the two principles will work well together).
I hadn’t even considered using plastic bottles like this! Now I need to research heat guns. Where I live, shipping is difficult (even without a pandemic) so I hope I can improvise something else. A hairdryer and patience? Holding the plastic at /just/ the right distance from a fire?
I have a bin of bottles and cans waiting to be recycled when our church eventually reopens. That means plenty of material to experiment with!

I wonder if this uses more energy and creates less useful waste from bottles tops and bottoms and releases toxins. Does anybody have research on this??

They're melting the plastic (which still gives a bit fumes but not too much that its toxic) and not burning them so it should be fine
