  • Animated Bible Myths is back for a fifth episode! This time we'll be exploring the story of the Tower of Babel - a myth about the origin of languages. Dinkleberry has been resurrected (although slightly re-branded) thanks to our incredible sponsor, Anthony Guthrie!
    Animated Bible Myths is a fun, satirical look at some of the most ridiculous Bible stories many of us were raised with as kids and aims to shine a light on some of the more ludicrous elements and ramifications that are often overlooked in Sunday school.

    So Berry didn't like people living together in harmony and getting along. He preferred unending misunderstandings, mistrust and endless tribal wars and ethnic conflicts that continue to this day.

      I believe you when you claim that you struggle to think logically.
      That's why ideas are best served to you in a cartoon format.
      You could have thought logically about all of this yourself, but instead you were more likely to wholeheartedly embrace the message of the biased interpretation and cartoon representation of a vaguely explained event that happened thousands of years before an author wrote about it, choosing instead to add to the propaganda of this art by posting a nonsensically dishonest attempt at mockery that actually only issues criticism of yourself and your lack of understanding.

    Hell yes!! It’s back from the early days when I first subscribed! Great work dude, this was the perfect story for an episode. I’m glad you addressed the actual state of Mesopotamian language at that time. Learning about the spread of ancient languages is what made me realize this story was bunk.

      Let me start with this...the call by some people at the U.N. to rebuild the ancient city of Babylon. They want to build it in the vicinity where they think the tower of Babel once stood . Now let me remind you of the Biblical prophecy found in Revelation ch 18 about Babylon and it's destruction . What you have here is a prophecy about a city and it's total destruction, in a manner similar to Sodom and Gomorrah (You can go see the ruins of Sodom for yourself btw ) which will affect the economy of the entire world...a city which hasn't even been built yet...but it's already in the thoughts of the elites of the world (ostensibly to help the region of Iraq stabilize). That this city , which has yet to be built , already has a description of it's destruction in the Bible , is at the very least remarkable proof of the supernatural truth found in ALL of God's word . How do we know the Bible isn't merely describing destruction that already happened to Babylon in an earlier time period and faking a prophecy so the Genetically Modified Skeptic and others like him can say AHA ! It's ALL LIES ! We know from recorded history and sources outside the Bible that the city of Babylon was never destroyed. When the Medes and Persians captured it and killed Belshazzar , they did so by diverting the river that flows into the city , and then sneaking in on the dry river bed underneath the fortifications. Nothing was ever destroyed in Babylon, it just got run down and faded away . According to other Bible prophecies about the end of the world , there will be the rise of a kingdom unlike any other ...it will consist of a global government which ten rulers will report to. These ten rulers will each rule over one zone of "socio-economic activity" ( quoting the U.N. here ). FYI , North America is designated zone #1 ( that's the real reason for NAFTA , to begin integration ). This is the global government that the U.N. is working at establishing right now ...you can read about it from their interviews and published materials that lay the foundation out . This call to rebuild Babylon is part of the plans for Global governance because they want a new Babylon to be the capital of the world , the seat of power . What is the aim of the Global system ? To eliminate God , and show that mankind can solve his own problems , and create his own morality without God . It is in effect a united global rebellion against God ...I know you would be excited to hear that ! Why do I explain all this to you in a bit of detail ? Because it all goes back to the Tower of Babel . That is the motivation for world governance and a new world capital called Babylon , because the Tower of Babel represented the FIRST ATTEMPT BY THE PEOPLE OF THE WORLD TO UNITE IN ORDER TO DEFY GOD AND CREATE THEIR OWN SYSTEM WHERE THEY ARE GOD. God told them to scatter all over the world and populate it...but they refused to obey God and started building a tower instead. This proposed new city of Babylon will represent the successful attempt at finally uniting in defying God and exalting humanity as god in place of God ( so they think , being unwilling to heed what the Bible says God will do to them this time ) . So , now I have explained to you from current events , and what they represent , exactly how the account of the Tower of Babel is most certainly , historically accurate. I could go into other evidence , but I wanted you to see a couple of things here : first , that the Bible is so incredibly complex in how seemingly totally unrelated events are actually part of something greater , second , it is because of these incredibly intertwined events that you can see how the Bible could never be a human invention...it could only be the miraculous supernatural work of GOD , and third , you need God because in joining yourself against him , you will perish . The next complex thing I will explain is the relationship to the fall of Jerusalem in 586 , and the wisemen who worshipped the baby called Jesus , giving him gifts of Gold ( he was a king) Frankincense (He was the High Priest ) and Myrrh ( the liquid they gave him as he died on the cross). I want to treat you with respect, and courtesy , but I also want to show you how you are mistaken about God and the Bible , but by explaining not insulting .

    I think a New Testament graphic novel would be cool. Tell the story of Christ but when the gospels diverge depict them side by side. Each page have up to 4 rows, each a different gospel. When only one gospel covers an arc/story it gets a whole page. When 2, 3, or 4 cover a story they split the page equally.
    The page would only split if the depicted events differ drastically like Judas’s death or the number of people at Jesus’s tomb.

    I knew the Bable story failed because of my reading on linguistics (the distribution and diversity of languages doesn't add up with the story, just like the distribution and diversity of living things doesn't add up to the 6-day creation story), but this raises quite a few points I hadn't even thought of. It fails more epicly than I had previously imagined.

    Obviously this is a story thought up to try to explain why people speak different languages. But if you read that passage where God is apparently talking to other gods saying we have to stop these humans or they'll think the skies are literally the limits. And let you know that the Hebrews believe the other pagan gods were real, it was just that Yahweh was the most powerful.

    • @RickReasonnz
      @RickReasonnz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Just for my own sake I took a look, this is from Britannica:
      The term monolatry has a connected but different sense; it refers to the worship of one god as supreme and sole object of the worship of a group while not denying the existence of deities belonging to other groups. The term *henotheism* is also used to cover this case or, more generally, to mean belief in the supremacy of a single god without denying others. This seems to have been the situation for a period in ancient Israel in regard to the cult of Yahweh.

    • @HolyKoolaid
      @HolyKoolaid  4 ปีที่แล้ว +53

      Oh they very much believed in the existence of other gods. YHWH was initially a Cananite deity so was El. Both inspired the Hebrew god.
      Also verses like, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me." Literally implies that there were other gods to have. And God's jealously over idolatry of other gods certainly feeds that narrative.
      Genesis 1 even has the gods saying, "Let us make man in our image." And bear in mind that the Jewish authors of the Bible didn't believe in Jesus or the Trinity (and they still don't).

    • @OldCleisthenes
      @OldCleisthenes 4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      The name for God that’s used in those passages is “Elohim” (gods) the plural for “El” (god). Rabbis try to say the plural is simply representative of everything God is, so singular is just too limiting. Christians try to say it’s proof of the Trinity. Basically it’s a mess.

    • @redapol5678
      @redapol5678 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Zeb Goen While I don’t know Hebrew myself, I don’t think the situation is as simplistic as you suggest. You need to look at the grammar and vocabulary of a language to understand it. I do know that the ‘-im’ ending is used to make plurals in Hebrew (eg cherub > cherubim), but it may not be that simplistic. For example, in English we have words like ‘pants’ and ‘scissors’ but we never refer to one ‘pant’ (in reference to clothing) or one ‘scissor’ (though it may be used in some rare circumstance?). My point is you can’t take a rudimentary rule of another language and apply it as a blanket fact, equivalent to ‘all plurals in English end in an S’ (which isn’t accurate) or ‘all words in English ending in S are plural’ (which isn’t true). I believe there are examples analogous to this in Hebrew

    As a kid I found the fairytale of Babel interesting. Mostly because I never thought about it. As I got older and learned more about linguistics, though, I saw that it was nothing more than a half-assed explanation to shut Timmy up about why there are so many languages in Bumfuck, Nowhere-by-Middle-East.
    But then I thought about the story as an atheist. It shows one of two things: God is a coward, afraid of a couple piled-up bricks and people capable of climbing a long staircase, or God is incompetent, confusing people's languages because he's afraid but forgetting his amazing all-knowingness contains the concept of a creole, which is a mish-mash of multiple languages that invariably results when groups of people with different languages live alongside each other for a few decades. Good job, Doofus McDinkleberry.
    And no, some people might think Creole is a language, because they're familiar with Haitian Creole, which is a creole. I'm not sure what a linguist would say, but I'm fine with "Haitian Creole" being considered a language, but "Creole" is not a language, because there's a _bunch_ of'em. So next time someone says they speak Creole, you can be a smartass and ask which one, confuse and irritate the hell out of them, fail to explain, and watch them become angry because "nuh-uh Creole is a language the Haitians speak it" and you can ask about all the other ones in the list Wikipedia has.

    Great work!
    As I was watching I was pondering upon the following issue:
    To what lengths must one go to be able to explain that a stupid story is indeed stupid? How much visualization and explanation does one need to get that an ancient fable with supernatural elements is nowhere near a historical event... I mean imagine doing a 10 min animated video on debunking the Existence of Santa Claus... Explaining in a vivid visual manner how a fat guy cannot squeeze through a chimney and crawl back again.. That is what this video is, only with other characters involved.

    • @BrockLee3
      @BrockLee3 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      And, God's words are perfect and need to be followed down to the letter...which is why we changed from the old testament to the "new testament." Why is it shorter? Well, we cut out all the "fluff." By which, we mean, we kept all the parts about incest; and the other parts about that one chick whomst was lusting after the men whomst'd have dongs like donkeys and whose "emissions" were horse-like.
      NIV Ezekiel 23:20 "There she lusted after her lovers, whose genitals were like those of donkeys and whose emission was like that of horses."

    The Tower of Babel story could be the most ridiculous story of Genesis. All this god had to do was munch on his heavenly popcorn while we built the tower past the limits of mud bricks capability to sustain weight and watch it collapse in on itself.

  • @bulakhv

    Well done, your experience shows in this one. I like that you slowed the pace a bit. Maybe I'm slow, but it feels more informative when I have time to catch what you're saying and get the jokes. The previous episodes felt to me like the mockery was a bit over the top and distracting from the valid criticism you had in them. This one really put the focus on the things wrong in the biblical story, which I think is much more effective, and is still entertaining.
