14years later and I'm still thankful for teaching me how to have fun and get better with a character I love. Got good results back in the day and this is what got me started! Loved the music choices and the structure of the guide.
I wasn't planning on logging in today due to lazyness, but after seeing this video I felt compelled to LIKE it. Amazing video man.. I just started using Sonic and i'm trying to get better. I think I just have.
Yeah, sorry about the fast text on some parts... I was trying to adjust the vid to the music and then I rushed a few sections =\ Glad you liked it anyway xD
All you need to do is dair from an height high enough so that it surpasses the distance covered by a single dair. I just used some examples to illustrate that.
I considered myself a great sonic player but you showed me theres much to learn. I wish I could by a strategy book of SSBB from pros of the game. This is awesome man I hope I get as good as you one day.
Well, the ASC, just like any other move in this game, can be countered by directional input. Therefore, if the opponent is holding forward while you hit them, they'll probably be launched towards your back. The examples shown on the video were from having no directional input at all (I totally forgot about that. ASC was pretty new at the time and I was too excited about it to even bother with directional influence). So, yeah, it's all about your opponent's reaction, not your fault or anything :)
Hey everyone SONIC HAS MOVED UP IN THE TIER LIST =D he went from E tier to C tier (34th to 23rd which is the biggest increase out of all the characters in Brawl!!)
The HA's "attack area" is a sort-of-ellipse. That ellipse is "centered" on Sonic at all the time. When you initiate the HA, it's no different: it will still be centered on you. That said, if you know the maximum range of that ellipse, you can optimize it by cancelling at the right moment. Just try testing it with the same setup as in the vid (Battlefield, same distance as shown).
A bunch? I know I didn't mention the Spinshot, but what are the others? I don't know which you're going to say, but they're probably already covered on some other guide, so, meh.
@lennyspizza It's all about positioning yourself. The more you try to use HA, the more you'll get the hang of it. Don't rely too much on it, though. It's not a very useful move, but it might be a good idea to use one every now and then to try to get your opponent off guard.
You have to keep in mind that when you don't have a double jump available, you'll be in "rolling form" for about 2 seconds without being able to stop it if you're airborne. I'll try to make an "educational video" on Spin Dashes and variations. Don't expect it soon, though xD
@Kirbyfan87827 Dair canceling is simply using dair from a height higher than the dair duration. No need to input anything at all*. Basically you go from "dairing animation state" to "falling animation state". During the latter the landing is almost lagless, whereas landing during the former will cause you to get some lag before you can move again. *you can, however, press down to fastfall - fastfalling is slower than dairing. It doesn't affect cancelling at all though.
Dair autocancels when used from a predetermined height. It just needs to be done from that specific height or higher (I just listed some examples) for it to land laglessly. :)
my best moment with sonic ever; i did a spring over a recovering fox knocking him to barely recover, i dair'ed and ledge guarded. if you cant tell from this being my est moment, my sonic sucks
@jamesrayle It's all about timing. The extra distance gained from the Dash Attack Cancel isn't that great, but you're able to actually cancel an attack with a buffered DAC. For instance, try jumping and using Fair and fastfalling. You should land with a lot of delayed frames from the recovery. During this time, try to buffer a Dash Attack (e.g.: try tapping to one side and down on the C-stick). If done correctly, Sonic should do a Dash Attack ASAP after the recovery. Now try to use a DAC then.
Yes, I believe it's possible with other controller types, but I have no idea how.. You can use Google and try to find a guide that uses those kind of controllers. Try searching for "Sonic advanced techniques" or something like that :)
wow. This is by far the best sonic guide on youtube. I love how the Down B-air Homing works when you use it for edge guarding. 5 star vid =). *note to anyone watching this vid. Pause it on parts you want to read. Will make the understanding of the tricks great*
The GameCube controller has the C-Stick. Most Brawl players prefer the GC controller over the Wiimote so most tips are gonna assume that is what you are using. With a Wiimote+nunchuck, you can set the D-pad for smashes and use the up-button for hyphen smashes. If you are using the Wiimote alone, you still might be able to pull it off hitting both 1+2 and up.
Cancel is pressing "L" Trigger, and the begining of an attack, kind of like the quick recovering action before you hit the ground, only this apply's with attacks.
Simply put: keep practicing. That's really all about it. Try to focus on a single technique an when you're familiarized with it, move on to another. It's hard, I know, but don't give up! xD
This is an awsome guide. Thanks so much. I just thought that I'd say that this is NOT a "you must play Sonic like this" guide it's simply a basis with tips and tricks to help you pick him up faster. Make sure to make up your own combos as well. Just thought I'd say to save SonicOrochi some trouble.
I think that you are probably the ultimate Sonic player. I've seen no better player than you. I mained Sonic straight away and used your tutorial as a guideline to help start me off. You take advantage of Sonic's speed to the full.
I know the last song comes from S3 and K but Geeze that sounds sooo much like a DBZ song when it begins:p. Great video btw. Im truly interested in sonic as a char, and i think this really does help:D
You just have to be high enough for the duration of the dair to run out before reaching the ground. If you do this, then you can do any move immediately when you reach the ground.
Thank you for this video only after one week, of your tips, and tricks I've pretty much mastered Sonic, with a couple of tricks of yours, and my own I've completely beaten, every last one of my freinds with Sonic who said he was weak and beaten they're best without much trouble, I hope furture Sonic the hedgehog players come yo you for assistance as well. Thanks once again - From a true sonic fan
Great guide, make another one with sonic and you talking about the moves ;D I love the last move when you do (Right + B) in air and then finish with a B attack and boom, they are outside, I have one question about it tho. I dont owe a WII so I need to ask, what if the attack misses and your opponent goes over you and you fall outside while doing (Right + B)? Can you recover from it fast? Thanks for reading.
To do Dair cancel you have to be at a certain height, just up-b and wait until his at about the peek of his height and you come with just about no lag.
umm about that extra jump part u no by final destination that wall thing where u jump off the wall i knew it before i saw this vid its just that it dosentwork on wifi cause the controls r heavy
when you spin dash of the side of floor how do you come back? I always fall off the stage most of the time because i can't stop spinning! Also great guide and I really like how you respond to almost all of the questions in all of your vids.
I just saw the video, which is great by the way, but I play with the Wii remote and nunchuck, and I was wondering how I would perform the DAC (Dash Air Canceling) move with that controller instead of the gamecube?
wow dude, i didn't know 3/4 of these things even existed in the game, really enjoying the character sonic and am going to try some of these things, thanks :-)
what controller do you use, because your reaction time is supber. Also do you have any tip against character like diddy kong who uses banana's to slow sonic down.
? I don't get it, just keep pressing jump after the Spring and you should wall jump easily. At Spear Pillar all you have to do is do a fair and you'll land on the stage.
I just wanna say that, this video helped me so much. I thank SonicOrochi everytime I pwn my friends with Sonic now. Thanks to Orochi, Sonic has become "The Fastest Thing Alive!" once again. So many people say Sonic sucks in brawl, I say, that he's the BEST in brawl, 10/10 a perfect vid Orochi, and thank you so much. Whoever watches this vid and agrees with me, please clap. *claps*
Whenever I Aerial Spin Charge someone, I footstool backwards off of them, then rev up for a second spincharge in the air. It's almost guaranteed to score another hit as they get up--assuming the footstool knocks lays them out. You know, you should have covered the Homing Attack recovery in this. The one where you can recover from beneath stages by bumping against it with a homing attack...
Super Mario Galaxy, Mario And Sonic At The Olympic games, Bleach, Super Paper Mario (kind of hard though at some points) De Blob, Legend Of Zelda Twilight Princess, if you need any more feel free to ask!
thanks that does help but you see I have to play that with my newphew and he gonna get bored watching me beat classica mode 10 times. I am sure he just rather see the space/story mode. exactly how far am i from sonic? Middle of the story mode complete you would say?
I'm not quite getting the ASC. I don't always land the 2nd hit but when i do it always sends them to far behind me to land anything. Any idea what i could be doing wrong? They rest was simple and my Sonic has definitely improved. Thanks
The video was really good, but I do have one complaint. If you happen to ever make something like this again, could you put a text box around the text, it was hard to read sometimes, even on high quality. Also, the text wasn't up for very long most the time, but I could pause and all... That aside, that was a great piece of work you put together.
Excellent video! You've a new subscriber. Thanks a lot! I'm going to watch it time and time again until I get these brilliant strategies of yours down and take down my buds. >=) Keep up the good work
That was a great guide. I love sonic too i rule with him!!! I only know a few of his moves so of course on online mode i always seem to end up dead last so this really helped!!! But my all time fave moves to use with him are the charge up moves and to charge up his sonic ball and fly with it.
The ASC is just the forward-special in mid air. Only difference is that the jump the f-special gets is whenever it hits the floor. Nothing special there.
Hey I'm getting SSBB pretty quick here, never played it before. I want a character with decent jumps and cool looking moves. Anyone have any suggestions for who I should train up and be?

wow thanks for this i'm gonna favorite this vid & study it so i can become even better as sonic!
i come from the future, you have gotten MUCH better

You deserve every 5-star you get! This is a very nice tutorial with things that most of the Smash Community doesn't know. Thanks a lot.

I always use Sonic! Though I always lure the enemys into the air, then use the homing attack and D-air.
@steve92100 It's the Doomsday Remix by Snappleman. I think.
You have no idea how much that HA and ASC sections helped.
Against humans, or not, you're pretty much the best Sonic user IMO.
my best moment with sonic ever; i did a spring over a recovering fox knocking him to barely recover, i dair'ed and ledge guarded. if you cant tell from this being my est moment, my sonic sucks
This was very informative! :D
You forgot the most important sonic advanced technique, The Jab Lock.
Now THIS is handy!
Being the "Blue Devil" of Phoenix, this really helps. Especially the instant edgehog.
The music kicked ass too.
Thanks again.
@LostSaga22 Basically you're interrupting the Dash Attack animation with an Up Smash. You just have to input the Up Smash with the right timing.
@SeelkadoomHedgehog Thanks! Gonna put this on the vid's description!
Yes, I believe it's possible with other controller types, but I have no idea how.. You can use Google and try to find a guide that uses those kind of controllers. Try searching for "Sonic advanced techniques" or something like that :)

Yeah, it's a semi-spike or something like that.
I should have reworded that.
It explains in the beginning that you don't press anything. It's simply when the attack ends before you hit the ground, there's less lag upon landing.
Everything explained at the video description.
Really nice video on Sonic tips. I liked the extra life at the end. Very nostalgic.
The GameCube controller has the C-Stick. Most Brawl players prefer the GC controller over the Wiimote so most tips are gonna assume that is what you are using.

@ChaosLingLing The music on Sonic Orochi's Guide can be found at OCRemix under the Sonic 3 and Knuckles link.
The Guide is Awesome. I'm gonna hit the Classics soon, as I really want Sonic.
I'll be sure to check this out once I get him.
You need to dair closer to the opponent. It will only send them sideways if it hits during its earlier frames of animation.
Cancel is pressing "L" Trigger, and the begining of an attack, kind of like the quick recovering action before you hit the ground, only this apply's with attacks.
@leafshinobiguy Press A or B during the "charge" animation.
Simply put: keep practicing. That's really all about it.

Ah the nostalgia, will always love this guide thank you for making it

well done!!

Well done video. That ASC + HA is deadly, man. Thanks!
best sonic guide on the internet thanks dude, totally changed my game play
That was really helpful. I was already going to try and use Sonic, and this'll help me even more.
You just have to be high enough for the duration of the dair to run out before reaching the ground. If you do this, then you can do any move immediately when you reach the ground.
He was in F tier initially. but yeah, he's beast lol. Makes me proud I main him.
He is B tier in brawl
Top tier in smash 4
High tier in smash ultimate

WOW!!! My Sonic is good, but with those homing attack strategies I'll be so much better. Great video! Thanks a bunch :)
Sorry, bro, I have no idea about DACUS on a wiichuck configuration. You should try Googling or searching that in Smashboards.
This guide convinced me to learn/main Sonic. Favorited!

Utterly amazing. The only criticism I have is regarding the typo at 8:25.
And B the C of D.

Awesome tricks man. Can you make a game & watch guide?
is that music from Project Chaos?
you dont have to cancel to ledge grab, sonic will ledge grab anytime he comes in contact with the ledge during the d-air
for hyphen smashing you say press up on the c stick but what remote are you using? i dont see a c stick on the wiimote
Yeah, that was just an example, though.
The video was really good, but I do have one complaint. If you happen to ever make something like this again, could you put a text box around the text, it was hard to read sometimes, even on high quality. Also, the text wasn't up for very long most the time, but I could pause and all...

How do you cancel the B attack (when you keep spinning and you control it). More than a few times have a went off the edge.
Excellent video! You've a new subscriber. Thanks a lot! I'm going to watch it time and time again until I get these brilliant strategies of yours down and take down my buds. >=) Keep up the good work
I have a wii elite the one that doesn't have a GameCube controller jack, is it still possible to pull off this tricks with other controller types?
Hey whats the name of the song play when you explain the spring?
very nice!! you can be sure i'll take some of this to the battlefield
Very nice tactics many people who use Sonic should consider these and maybe Sonic will not be as underpowered as people actually think right now.
how do u cancel the Dair? thanks for the tutorial. sonic has the potential to be unstopable and thanks to this im one step closer.
You should explain spinshotting. It's pretty useful.
the homing and excpecially the ASC whatever really looked like they would help
Nice guide! May I ask what video editing software you used to make it? Do you use the same one today? I'm looking for an easy to use video editor^^
CreatingDivinity I've used (and have been using) Sony Vegas. I'm no expert on it, though, but there are a lot of good guides around here on TH-cam!
Gameplays Traduzidos - S.O.!
Oh ok, thanks for the reply! Gonna look into it. :)
Keep your good work up!
I can't reply to you directly, Brian Abaloyan (check your Google+ settings), but, yeah, will do, but it will take some time..
hey uh how do u do the sonic side-b fling?
i know it covers a lot of ground.
That was a great guide. I love sonic too i rule with him!!! I only know a few of his moves so of course on online mode i always seem to end up dead last so this really helped!!! But my all time fave moves to use with him are the charge up moves and to charge up his sonic ball and fly with it.
Why were the homing attacks about tripled or twice the range I do?
The ASC is just the forward-special in mid air. Only difference is that the jump the f-special gets is whenever it hits the floor.
Nothing special there.
Haha, thanks, I'll post the links to the music in a bit. =)
I forgot what remix this is.
any tips on how to beat meta?
dude! how do you do the move hes doing at 1:12-1:13.. its like a run in place thing...
in the story u still have a long way 2 go but u can also get SONIC by clearing classic mode with 10 different characters
hope this helps
Hey I'm getting SSBB pretty quick here, never played it before. I want a character with decent jumps and cool looking moves. Anyone have any suggestions for who I should train up and be?
the song of the minute 4 how call and if from a game which one is
you never showed how to use HA and it looks very effective how do you use it exactly?
Same here buddy, searching for it, cant find
can you do a sm4sh guide for sonic?
