Thank you for your wonderful analysis. I keep my expectations low when it comes to reaction videos since many of them lack substance, but yours was great. It was insightful and balanced and I got to know a lot more about Kim Jong Kook's singing techniques. kjk is remarkable in many ways - he is a legendary singer in Korea and has had success both as part of a band (the first song here belongs to his days as a member of Turbo known for their dance music) and as a solo singer. He is also extremely popular as an entertainer and now a health youtuber, so much so that the younger generation remembers him more in these roles. kjk's career as an entertainer has for years overshadowed his persona as a singer and he has also been less active with his music. It was only last year that he brought out his single after years and the last snippet is from a remake of an old Korean song by another artist. So, it is all the more wonderful to watch a reaction that gives his singer persona the credit it deserves.
I agree with your take on Jong Kook's voice and where it sounds the most gorgeous. kjk got known for his ability to sing high notes in a female key, that is why many of his songs have that register. It is his trademark as a singer. But I wish he gets songs where he can showcase more of his colour and personality, and the songs and parts you picked are some of my personal favourites. What I love about him as a singer is the control - even when he hits all those impossibly high notes, he is able to do absolute justice to the emotion of the song and that, for me, is remarkable. You also discussed how a singer's voice changes as he/she gets older and how it becomes difficult to do justice to some of the older songs. For some of Jong Kook's old songs, I would say the reverse has been the case - the song with which he starts out here sounds better to me than his original version.

I remember seeing him for the first time at Running man when I was a kid, time goes fast.
His old songs pretty much all in high range is because at the time korea pop music industry has a preference chasing high notes, so its like a competition, singing high notes means you're a great singer, something like that. and also its related to the night club culture during the 90s. when kjk changed to ballad, his first couple albums still pretty high as those are his trade mark. but later he has more large range songs. but still most are in female key because that actually is his comfort range lol his natural tone is pretty high, he usually lower his voice when speaking, but he laughs in high pitch like a guinea pig while exciting lol
his last concert was in 2019, the tickets were sold out under 1 or 2 mins... so he add another day, totally 3 days in a roll. he has like 20 songs all high notes, singing non-stop, only one clothes change, no VCR break. its insane. and he was having a cold at the time! he said he always gets sick during concerts, one time he was having a fever but still went on stage. like in this vid he coughed many times, i think he could had a cold again. because he gets cold very often lol due to his low body fat (9%). anyway, i think he is one of the best singers not just in korea, but also just genuinely unique. my favor songs from him is "forget me not", "love forever" and "as a man".

김종국은 단순히 고음만 잘 내는게 아니라 고음의 곡을 부르면서 감정을 엄청나게 잘 담아냄... 거기다가 고음'만' 하는게 아니라 저음역대부터 독특한 음색. 라이브로 들으면 이 호소력이 진짜 장난아님 라이브로 들어야함 김종국 목소리는 정말 국보급임

Kim Jong Kook has always sang like that since his idol debut in 1995. He is also only one of two people to win a triple crown for his song (grand prize from three stations in the same year) as well as the grand prize as both a singer and entertainer which also only two people have done. He usually always sings 25+ songs in that voice in his concerts, he's also 45 if you didn't know his age. He's one of the most popular people in Korea still to the present being only second in entertainment brand always. He has a lot of video's and live songs if you are curious.

He was first generation Kpop. He was in a group called Turbo. It is my all-time favorite group. I'm pretty sure this is actually natural for him when he sings. I vaguely remember him being asked that when he debuted. He is a legend. He has also managed to stay very relevant. He has been on very popular variety shows, notably Running Man.

He is not only an amazing singer but also an amazing person. Jong Kook donated all his youtube revenue (after paying his crew) to charity and he never expected for his channel to blow up so quickly. He is well known to be filial, and a gentlemen towards ladies. He also has a clean lifestyle and a paparazzi who once followed KJK to try and dig dirt on him gave up eventually due to his "boring" lifestyle (it was just filming, gym, filming, gym). He recently got into controversy with a bodybuilder from youtube who accused KJK of taking substance to sustain his shape and KJK responded by taking various tests to prove he is all natural. Eventually the bodybuilder had to apologise.

My parents are both pianists and grew up listening to him, my mother said that she once went to a concert he had held in Busan when he was much younger(in his late 20s around late 2005) he had hit a note only high skilled sopranos that had been singing for years could hit. Many doctors in Korea believed that he had some sort of voice deformity in the early 2010s and even offered insurance for his vocals cords.

Same😂 I heard few of his songs way before I started watching running man but didn't knew that he was the singer. Then running man happened, and as a fan I searched my faves and the first music video of kjk that I watched was lovable. It shocked 😳 the hell out of me😂. That was around 2011-2012 I think. It also became my favorite song of his, aside from black cat.

He sings quite a few times in Running Man and it just seem evident that he is a singer when you hear him singing.
He became famous on variety shows as a (singer) guest with the TV SHOW X-MAN where he meets Yoo Jae suk.
He only became more active on variety shows than as a singer after his military service (since 2008).
He is the one and only male solo singer who got Daesang(Grand prize) from both music industry and entertainment industry along side with Lee Hyo Ri ( the one and only female artist who achieve that title like him)

I recently watched this video and I really loved this. I am not knowledgeable when it comes to singing so your detailed analysis and explanation really helped me, I think others as well, to understand things. Other people might know Kim Jong Kook because of Running Man, but sometimes they forget that he is a recording artist and it's really amazing how a sweet voice comes out of that muscular body.
I suggest you also watch his performance of "Speechless" from the Running Man Fanmeeting! He really made our jaws drop with that performance and he really deserves the praise. Thank you for this video! ☺☺☺

I remember his comeback concert that was aired on my little old boy where he was supposed to have a 2 day straight but decided to have it a 3 day due to clamor of the fans with songs almost all on high plus catches cold even before day one of his concert and still performed like it was 2005... love this very insightful review of kookie...❤🐯

Fun fact: According to another member of Turbo to said, when Kookie was first selected to be a member of Turbo, he did not know how to dance.
Although he was a member of the Dance Club, the "Dance Club" is actually a disguise of the campus gang organization, even so, it took him a week to learn the basic dance steps and participated in the choreography of some songs.

한국에는 노래방 문화가 굉장히 발달되어있는데 거기서도 남자들은 김종국 노래를 대다수 못부릅니다 키가 굉장히 높아요~~굉장히 하이톤 노래가 많아서 실력있는 남자들도 대다수 힘들어합니다 고음노래가 너무 많고 높아요 ㅜㅜ 실제로 김종국은 남자인데도 거의 4옥타브 가까이 올라가는 고음가수예요~

Believe me his voice is always like that.... He's getting that thin beautiful voice by accidently drunk insecticides that he thought is some Watters when he's younger.... So he's voice is always like that since his debuted.... AndbI love his voice.... And when he singing others male singers he would always higher the note by one note since his voice is naturally high and it's would be difficult for him to use the original note

김종국이 부른 발다드라는 장르는 가사가 핵심이다. 단순히 들리는 언어의 음향만으로는 노래의 즐거움을 느끼기엔 한계가 있다. 한국인들이라면 이 목소리에 이 가사에 정말 감정적으로 빠져들 수 밖에 없는데 안타깝다. 가사의 뉘앙스와 그 감정이 온전이 Emotial하게 느끼기엔 언어의 장벽이 크다. 새벽 2시에 10번 넘게 중독을 반복하며 듣고 있다.

He is more comfortable on high notes. He practiced 5~6mounth to master low notes to sing song call one man. If you listen to his Turbo songs you will know his voice is really high in the really beginning. High notes are just normal voice to him.

저도 그런 느낌이... 오랜만에 나오는 가수 분들 보면... 분명 노련함이나 스킬?이 당연히 늘었지만, 그 노련함과 스킬은 섞어 부르니... 예전에 듣던 맛은 전혀 나지 않는...ㅠㅠ

I'm 28 years old, and I have listened to his songs since I can remember, the first album I remember listening to (3rd album) he has always sang this high in most of his songs. Really fun to watch this video, never followed any reaction videos but I will subscribe! Thank you for this video! My favorite song is 어제보다 오늘더 (More than yesterday). My top song that I sing when I go to Karaoke! If you actually watch solo live concerts, he will sing 10+ songs without too much exhaustion, it's amazing.

Because the original track for me did not give justice to the lyric and emotion of the song, so that's why there is a acoustic version be released after years which give the song a justice. Try listen to the original track of Addiction then you will know why this song did not get popular around that time

As for high notes ..well I once watched a kdrama called My girl and the ost to that drama is called a Mermaid loved a shark ( this song and this drama got me hooked on everything k entertainment ) and believe me to this day I still can not believe the song was sang by a man .

I'm a long-time fan of Kim Jong-guk, and I listen to all songs often and like them. He is very famous in Korea and is a top star singer and entertainer, but no one has analyzed his singing style or voice. In Korea, TH-cam is very popular, and many vocal trainers analyze and guide famous singers, but no one analyzes Kim Jong-guk, but thank you so much for doing this. I think it's probably because he's not the type of singer who uses a lot of singing methods to analyze, but he's the type who sings with a very unique and natural tone and vocal cords, so other people can't follow him, but it's not good for analysis.
I prefer the beginning and mid-pitched range to his high-pitched range. That's why I like songs that have a fast tempo and repeat the mid-tone range faster than songs that emphasize the high-pitched range, such as "One Man," the second song in this video. The reason was that the pitch was higher because of the high-pitched range, but I thought it was worse to hear because it was harder to sing and the sound was worse. I thought it was just me, but when I saw you expressing that the sound becomes thinner if I go to the high-pitched range, I became convinced that it was for no reason. Certainly, he is an amazing singer who can sing high notes, but I think the most attractive range is the mid-tone range that often appears just before the beginning of the song and highlights.
It's really hard not to fall in love with this man and of course his voice ♥ i liked your analysis i learned so much
