Got BMW X5 3.0i 2004 5 speed auto 122k running great, like a dream, went for this one over all the other x5 cause of the m54 engine, as I believe one of the best bmw has produced and love the e53, good vid bud👍
Finally some respect for the suv that the internet has talked so much shit about. Alpine white 2005 E53 X5 4.4i owner no leaks no smoke.
Another great and informative video Dean! Enjoying this new series on the X5, the last era of the real BMWs
Good overview, I have a 2003 diesel with 230,000km . I’ve had the door handle carrier issue, the window sticking, then breaking the little clip issue.
Another never ending problem seems to be suspension bushes front and rear. Not hard to replace for the mechanically minded. I really like it and will keep it. I’ve had it 8 yrs, been very reliable and very economical. Easy to service, air filter bit of mission but overall I liked it so much I bought an E70 4yrs ago, his and hers 👍
any tips for a potential buyer? I am going to look one 2006, 3.0 diesel, owner claims 210.000km....
I have 3.0i Fully loaded with LPG conversion .
I’ve made front spring conversion and never ever had problems with it . Very reliable car .
I love it . Especially for all the options And low mantain cost
I want to do just that. I'm struggling to find one which is blue with a cream interior.
Spot on Dean , can't wait for some engine service content aswell , 👍👍
I'm planning to buy x5 2006 after watching many reviews and your review in particular! Please add few more video on suspension related.
Dean, as ever, you're "the man". It sounds like you've picked the best version of the X5. I knew the E53 is an E39 under the skin. BMW had acquired Range Rover technology when they bought the Rover Group in 1994 so that's That 3.0 diesel and ZF transmission sound like they're quite bulletproof. As a DIYer and content creator, I would be looking for the cheapest X5 in need of some TLC. Silicone spray, contact cleaner and spray grease are essential to prevent some of the issues you've described.
Correct mate yes most of that is needed on this generation of cars including E46 , E39 , E53 it’s all common and all them things are very very cheap but a lot of people don’t even realise if you use this lubricants and grease this car will outlive you.
As for Range Rover I know this as the P38 was fitted fully with bmw electronics and I worked on them for many many years including the M57 engine which is more common here then that crappy M62 engine thankfully.
I have owned every variant in these E53 and you seriously cannot be the diesel for reliability I mean fine the gearboxes don’t hold up well but that is regarding the remapping, but all that aside even when the gearbox does let go the engine is still strong and no issues so I would rather have gearbox problems then engine issues anyday.
And the sound of that straight 6 diesel is unbeatable in every way
Thanks for the video. I'm currently driving an e39, but I'm really tempted to swap it for an x5 e53
Thanks for the video once again. I have just bought one (same year and model). I am getting a wheel shake a 70mph constant could this be a ball joint? Also I have a fault code for all glow plugs and am getting black smoke on acceleration could you maybe lead me in the right direction. Thanks in advance
Hi mate do you have or going to do a video on the stiffening plate bolts as there seems to be a big debate on whether they are a one time use
I'm trying to compare e53 to e70 in terms of reliability. Understand the engine is essentially the same as is the 6sp in nearly models correct? I've heard there are more electrical issues? I think in one of your vids though you said e70 was more reliable?
What of the above video is of no concern for the e70 and what additional issues are there for the e70?
Any tips for my E53 04 4.4 V8 with the heated seats? They both won't work but the electrics in both seats work?
Best info ever!! Thank you.
Love your Videos mate, and picked up an 2006 E53 only a month a go and love it. As excepted passenger side door does not open from outside, fixed that for £10 :D Now I just have to fix Radio cutting out and that the Nav screen is black. For Radio I know I need to get the BM54 fixed ;) As for screen being black is a different matter, as it did come back for a short time after I changed battery, but after that is just stays black, even after I had battery disconnected for 1 1/2 hour while I fixed the passenger door. So wonder if it is the Nav unit in the back that is the issue ( The car do not have TM) Keep up with the awesome videos!!
Just to clarify can someone buy an e53 with a tow bar just not to use the towbar for towing?
I bought an 06 X5 4.4i and it has the CD player not the navigation like you have.
Where can I get the full screen system like you have?
Thanks and love your videos!!!

13:48 if you are getting no sound.... go check the small fuse in the BM module :) sometimes it is just a matter of corrosion/oxidation. Take a knife or sanding paper (fine one) and tear down a bit of the contacts on the fuse ends so it is shiny and smooth. Then put it back in and if it solved your problem just get a new one. This fix worked on 3 cars so far for me. And why a new one when this trick worked? Because the corrosion may as well be all over the fuse (meaning within the plastic cover) and if it should break one day to save the unit then the corrosion build up may actually preventing the fuse from being blown and then you better have a fire extinguisher at hand. Don't ask me how I know :)
I put an aftermarket rotors and caliper on my X5. Solved excessive wear. Also the suspension bushings wear and increases camber with excess tire wear. The solution is not to replace tires every 8000 miles, but to replace the rubber bushings with poly bushings.
Polyurethane bushing will last forever...
any pointers on where to buy? thanks
thanks for advice! do you have a link to the part/shop?
I have a E70 but now want a E53 for the M57 alone. Have the N57 in my E70 lci
Nice one dean thinking about buying one now 🛠🇬🇧🛠
just purchased a E53 4.8 is im in love
Buying mine today !
Have 4.8is e53 with 196k on it very reliable
Nice! I am considering buying a 2005 X5 4.8is with 102K. It'll be my first BMW. I'm concerned about the reliability issues. The valve stem seals work has already been completed on the vehicle.
Would you recommend to install a DTE system diesel chip stage 3 on this e53 M57
Thanks , great advice.
Hi dean i own x5 30d 04 just had wheels balanced after watching your vlog spot on if just got 2nd hand rear number plate ligut bar also full sunroof was sorted works fine now . Any advice on oil change on auto gearbox its done 144000??
would you advise to buy 2001 3.0d? it has around 250 000km
Hi , I need help I check a BMW next week for buying its a 2002 X5 3.0d high mileage he said sometimes the transmission lights come on but drives perfectly. Need help as much as possible before buying
Do the early cars have a Dpf as e60 ones didn't??
Where is your garage do you check cars out for people before they buy them like an inspection cheers
Could someone explain what CV stands for in case of this car?
Well articulated insights. But I’ve never come across that sort of kidney grill for any e53, it looks bit bulky - is it OEM one? Would love to get the same in black for my 3.0d - pls share the details, cheers!
This is standard feature on BMW X5 SPORT models after 2005 here from factory all 3.0D has them fitted as 3.0D is treated as the best selling E53 of all time.
In the Uk all 3.0D look like this they make these better then the 4.8 version as nobody buys that here, so diesel always gets the best treatment by dealers and people here.
@@BMWDoctor thanks for your swift response. I’ve been owning e53 3d for the last 4 years, without a doubt it’s a beautiful machine. I’m about to get my second e53 but this time the 4.8is - Valve seals seems the costly affair (if in case need a fix) however appreciate your insights on other areas which may be a costly to fix, many thanks.
I have a bmw x5 2005 the buttons on the radio have stopped working won't let me change to other stations
BTW the best tip for buyng such a car I follow each time - keep in mind that this car did cost about 80k+ EUR when new and today you can buy one for about 3-13k EUR. Don't go for the cheapest one but also don't go for the most expensive one UNLESS you know why you want to pay that money. And "I think that paying more gives me the best chance to buy the best out there" is not the correct answer. That would be "I owned at least one and now I know exactly why I want the one with the highest price" answer. But if you want to be absolutely sure about your car then get a good basis and do some maintenance on your own. Go get something in the 2nd half of all higher prices while keeping an eye on maintenance history and actual condition like mentioned in this video. Also and most important - be ready to spend at least half the buy price in maintenance once you buy it. It is a used car and problems may occur. Fix them properly with cash put aside and not just temporarily with cheap aftermarket parts. You can fix a few things with non OEM parts but most of the time you'll need OEM because anything else won't work and put you on a road of pain. Sensors? Pierburg or BOSCH. Bot supply BMW directly. Not sure which one to buy in your case? Go with BMW OEM. Especially when you need a MAF, crankshaft or camshaft sensor. ONLY OEM! Suspension air ride bags? Arnott (or Bilstein if you will). Suspension shocks? Take your pick. Sachs, Bilstein, OEM BMW (usually double the price of the most expensive aftermarket brand) just stay away from cheap crap. Front/rear wheel support? Lemforder, Meyle HD or BMW OEM. Lemforder is a direct supplier, Meyle HD is not but their quality is outstanding. Each BMW model has its own set of OEM suppliers that you can buy instead of OEM parts that in most cases are just BMW rebranded OEM suppliers. In rare occasions some rebranded OEM parts are of higher quality then the same aftermarket BMW nonbranded equivalent. BMW OEM suspension shocks may last up to 200 000 km and more while the same non branded item may last up to 100 000km "only" with a lottery probability that your set may last even more. Or not. This is reasonable behavior which a lot of people don't have and many of those tend to complain later about how BMW is crap (yeah like any other car or brand does great after being 18+ years on the road) and they don't produce quality cars anymore etc etc.... :D
If you are ready for that then you'll have a good time with a smile on your face. If not and expendable cash after purchase is a problem be very carefull what you buy....or consider another car instead.
You say to avoid one with a tow bar, but how about buying one to tow? That is my main intention.
Buy without and put one on
Cheers
Instead of the M54B30, what do you recommend for someone who wants the 4.4 N62 V8?
Get the 4.8is better than the 4.4i
Check the rod bearings, common problem on the BMW M S65 which is derived from this engine. Maintenance, oil change and every filter on the car every 15.000 KM idk like 8K miles I guess and with like 100.000 miles on it I'd start using Castrol 5w40 Because of engine wear.
The n62 comes in three trims which is the 4.4l,
The 4.6l
And the 4.8l engines
Recommend a large amount of money to keep it on the road
I am going to see a 2005 just naw, no towing bar, 3 litre diesel, fingers crossed 🤞 😀
did you buy it?
i fixed my door handle problem, all fixed . i sold my kids to a romanian guy i met in the services .
What's the name of the intro song?

One had been standing at some strangers house for 3 years. She couldn't afford to change the battery. Started first time with another battery. It's was a diesel. Engine and at box was any man's dream to drive. The saddest part was that almost every warning light was on. Radio, airbag, dsc, obc, abs, nothing worked. Battery also drained overnight. Tyres and rear air shocks including compressor were knackered. Someone had also been in there before. Wiring was opened up and whole lot of splicing. Worst of all, rats got into the engine bay. I think most of these are parted out now. It's just not cost effective to repair them. They're after all dinosaurs now and huge climate change polluters. I decided against it. Too much of a risk. But I still yearn for that engine and tranny. Nothing though beats a peaceful nights rest. Be wary. These things will bankrupt you.
