The Magical "Halibut Bite Window"

  • Im back for summer! I kicked off the summer adventures by going after some California Halibut in the San Francisco Bay. This day, something very typical of halibut happened... they didn't bite all morning, then it was non-stop action during a 20 minute period. I call this, the magical "halibut bite window", when it seems like all the fish in the bay want to bite at once

    Elon: So many interesting questions you raised. I'll try to recollect a couple: 1-Changes in water color- maybe a sand bar/high spot; Conservative halibut fishing methods: 2-Circle hooks for lip catches and quick releases of dead fish; 3- limit 2 'butts one under present size and one over size. Big halibut are big producers of next years fish. Huge pressure is on SF bay for halibut as locally and perimeter fisheries NO salmon and limited crab.

    • @FishermansChronicles
      @FishermansChronicles  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for your comment Ron, 1) I don’t think the water color change was a sand bar - didnt notice any water depth change and the dark spot seemed to drift around too! Very curious as to what it is 2) i think I will start trying either circle hooks or barbless hooks, maybe ill make a video comparing the two! 3) yes! The bigger the fish, the more babies it will produce. Im hoping to catch a huge one so I can release it and explain exactly why. Ive been reading articles to try to find a halibut age/ fecundity graph to show people exactly how many more babies big halibut produce compared to small ones. I think the most sustainable and best tasting sizes to keep are around 25 inch. We have to be really careful this year and take individual accountability for our fishery!

      @@FishermansChronicles Check out Alaska so far away, with few fishers and their complicated area wise with different regulations for Halibut. Most importantly, They NOW don't keep all the big, producing females and their genes. Females get bigger than males; trophies?

  • @josezepeda5087
    @josezepeda5087 ปีที่แล้ว

    That water change can be a couple things. A drop off ledge where current hits and stirs water up or massive bait. Google earth it and you can see the drop offs and water color difference. When I'm fishing closer to candle stick area I do it and zig zag the drop off and get fish that sit on the ledge.

    • @ChiefToad
      @ChiefToad ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@FishermansChronicles Yes I have. They don't seem to work as well with the butts because they tend to not turn after they strike, so the hook won't seat well in the side of the jaw. If you try them use offset styles to help improve the hook up ratio. Best used if drifting, rather than trolling.
