"Unlike academic coursepacks, other copyrighted materials can be used without permission in certain educational circumstances under copyright law or as a fair use. “Fair use” is the right to use portions of copyrighted materials without permission for purposes of education, commentary, or parody". I still see educational videos, parodies and such get copyright strikes... TH-cam is great for many reasons but shit like this is something they need to fix..
Interesting video! I had a weird situation a few years back (before I even knew about monetisation!) when a recording of a cover I played with my band at a wedding was apparently so spot-on that Warner Music Group tried to have it taken down :-D I think I filed a dispute and said "the band are all really flattered that you thought this was the original but unfortunately not, *we're just that good*"
Man, I've been here since the beginning, and I genuinely thought you were bankrolling from these drum covers. I've got so much more respect for you as a person now, and thanks for answering a lot of questions I had about YT.
Hey everyone! Casey did a fantastic job touching the tip of the iceberg regarding copyright law (other than saying that it's okay to use 5 seconds of a master in a video [this is still infringement]). I work at Sony Music's imprint Provident Label Group; If you have any additional questions specific to the music industry, reply to me and I'll to my best to answer them for you!
Hi do you know how TH-cam detects copyright infringement? I frequently record public cover performance and some of them were copyright claimed. I wonder if TH-cam detects it from the melody of TH-cam or whether the title of the song title of a TH-cam video plays a part. I noted some uploader didn't bother to list the titles of the Performance. I wonder was it because the title increases the chance of detection
But how do you figure out which songs you can cover that won't get blocked or taken down completely? Wasting Time And Money recording & editing a drum cover just to have it blocked in some countries or removed entirely feels awful..
i dont mean to be offtopic but does any of you know of a tool to get back into an Instagram account?? I somehow forgot the password. I would love any tips you can give me
@Dominick Lennon Thanks for your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff now. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
I'm really glad you made a video on this, since you are a very popular TH-cam channel that does covers. I used to make covers on Facebook/TH-cam but stopped because of copyright. I know what fair use is but drum covers aren't under it. I've seen a lot people say that they don't own the copyrighted material and state who the owner is, but I know that will not help them when it comes to dealing with a claim. I feel like if people followed copyright laws more strictly there would be less content on TH-cam. Having that said, I am not against copyright, just wanted to state that thought.
I've been making drum cover videos were basically I just blast the song through a bass amp and record audio/video simultaneously. I am just starting getting into recording the video first of me playing the song, and then overlaying the actual audio later. I keep running into copyright blocks and bs so thank you for this information! I think the pitch bend might be the easiest solution.
If you do a cover song where everything that's audible is all you (meaning no use of the original recording) you just have to get what's called a "compulsory mechanical license" and pay 9.1 cents per sale/digital download. You can learn more about it if you go to Harry Fox Agency's website! Some great information in this video, Cooper. I'm sure it's helping a lot of "TH-cam musicians".
Here's why the current copyright implementation is wrong, improper, and illegal. When you alter the song so much from the original by placing a very prominent drum track on top of the original track, then it is no longer the original content. It's the same as if I took a song and screamed "LALALALALAL" for 3 minutes during the entire song. NOBODY is listening to that song for the song because it's not the original song anymore. When someone watches a drum cover, they are not there for the original song, they are there to listen to that specific drummer's interpretation of a drum part for that song. If you just upload a copy of the song, OF COURSE they should divert the ad revenue because you just uploaded an exact copy... BUT a drum cover is a wholly different animal. The current system is wholly improper and the content holders are simply shooting themselves in the foot. Soon, they will get what they want, which is that nobody will be aware of their music anymore.
Wrong. You are altering someone's copy written material without their consent. You are then using the resulting infringement to achieve monetary gain without any share being given to the copyright owner. If you did not use other peoples songs then no one would watch your videos, so it is not fair use, or legal for you to exploit your self off the backs of other musicians.
That's not true because even before youtube existed, if you wanted to do a little show at a small venue with your band and no backing tracks, you had to pay to cover copyrighted songs.
Some royalty free music is easily made with Garage Band on an iPad. I've sold a bit on nothing tracks. To create background music is cake. Stock loops. Maybe someone will try this too?
I just want to be able to make drum cover videos of classic rock / hair metal songs and don’t care to make anything… Without trying to make money, how do so many people get away with posting the vids. I mainly just want to make them to share with friends 🤷♂️🤷♂️
Mostly this come down to monetizing the video. If you monetize it, it could get blocked and you could get a strike on your account. Sometimes the monetization will go to the record label or artist. Just depends on who the artist is. Rick Beato has a few videos on this very subject.
Useful info. I've considered doing covers before, but the first video I uploaded was immediately removed so I haven't messed with it since. Perhaps one day Ill give it another go with my own music.
Cooper. How do you get a sponsor like Zidjian, Pearl, or other brand for your videos? It's hard to get one? When did you got your first sponsor? You are the best, you inspire me to play more the drums.
tomas arriete I think they contact him. Once you gain some popularity/views they will see your videos and think its worth paying him to sponsor. I think that is how it works.
to be able to earn money, I want to do: 1 record my own songs, sell them on itunes, spotify, bandcamp, on my website. 2 i want to play cover songs, sell them on itunes, spotify, bandcamp, on my website. 3 i want to make a video clip for 1 and 2. is it possible to make 900usd every month, or it is not possible? if possible, how it is possible?
Can i ask something i Try to find for 1 Year but i couldn't find out. So how do you record Your durms and how it sounds very clean and how mix and put the music (please like it so he can see) AND I LOVE YOU CASEY A LOT!!!
hi casey i am a die heart fan of yours and i am learning drum since 3 years and i am in trinity grade 8 and its the last one........hope we wll meet soon in the guitar center drum competition......you r really my inspiration......thank uu......i am now trying playing drums in mobile its a bit tough.......
I think this whole video is just a summary about all the things that are wrong and outdated about the copyright-laws... Which is a lot in my opinion btw :p I think there should be nothing wrong with a cover. All I hear is free publicity for your music, and I think that should be supported by artists. I don't see why the revenue can't be split between the creator and artist/label... Also you forgot to mention that there are services where you can buy the rights for songs. Think about Monstercat for example. For (I believe) $80/year you can use (nearly) all of Monstercat's music on youtube for that year. All the monitization is yours then, and if you pay per year the video will never be striked.
+Rory Fuller You say this like content creators don't spend time on their work. Which is not true of course. Even if you didn't get the song legit, why can't the revenue be split?
MagicLegend because in that context you stole something and made money from it. That's like going to a clothes shop, stealing a T-Shirt, and then selling that T-Shirt back to the original shop.
+Bitcrushed No, you're not selling it back to the original shop. You are selling it to consumers, and giving a margin of your profit back to the original store. If you do it right it will cover their costs, and they will also make some money from it. Not to speak of knowledge about their brand/song/band.
+Matt But what makes the drummer's (or coverer) less worth than the original song? Why is a cover, which maybe even has more hours put into it given the current pop-industry, worth less than the original song? It is also a piece of work that someone has put hours upon hours into?
+Matt But why shouldn't the remake / addition be profitable for the creator? If you only posted the drums, and let people add the drumless track himself, I can make the full profit from the video. I agree with you that the revenue for the song itself should be going to the original artist. But if one makes a new version from it, maybe even as a full cover; so everything is done by you, it is still the original song? It just doesn't add up for me. I think that if you split the revenue with the original artist, and you get a piece for your creativity that you added to the song there shouldn't be a problem. Well, apart from the big companies only wanting money and not caring about people then ;-)
Hi I use Drumless tracks which I believe originated from the game ‘rock band’, I play drums over the tracks and upload them to my channel (unlisted uploads at the moment as just trying things out). Regarding these Drumless tracks however (which are already on TH-cam -that’s where I get them from) should I be able to upload and share my videos? Thanks! (I’m in the UK by the way, and don’t want to make any money from TH-cam, I just want to have a channel to share my uploads)
Very helpful, thanks for taking the time to make this! The pitch shifting is not working anymore, but fortunately only some videos have been blocked on mobile devices only, which I can deal with!
Rapper's Delight- Sugar Hill gang- plz do this I love this song and would love to see a cover. I don't mind whether it is the shortened version or the full version but plz this. Many Thanks.
If I wanted to sing over the top of a backing track ( or perhaps one I've performed myself with guitar and piano) of a well known song written by someone else, do I need to contact the owners of its copyright BEFORE posting it on youtube? My main aim is for marketing/publicity i.e. not necessarily making money from views or whatever. Can the copyright owners stop me from publishing my recording even if I don't intend to take any money from it?
If I have a copyright claim from a Brazilian channel? But I make Metallica guitar covers.. What can I do? At least I want the money to go to Metallica not to another person that doesn't own this. Even videos that I took from my phone in concerts are claimed by the same channel
so eg, linkin park heavy, i want to do a non monetary cover, its the original song, ive cut chesters vocals and left Kiiaras can i sing along and post the cover without getting pulled? just audio. sorry complete noob here.
Yes, but it's not like a lot people will watch a drum or guitar video with no background track. Usually it's extremely boring opposed to a usual cover. So unless you've got a few million people eager to watch anything you upload, you won't get much views and money with that kind of videos.
Great video! How do you get the latest tracks into your recording software? I keep having to buy the CD format to get the MP3, whereas i would prefer to use a streaming service (apple music, spotify) and use the track that way? Is that do-able? This is referring to chart stuff, not RF music. Thanks! Big fan!
I've told so many people in their videos about this topic. They usually claim it's fair use etc... disclaimer disclaimer. I politely tell them I'm not trying to troll. I'm just educate them. Ignorance isn't an excuse!!! As an artist myself I hate the red tape for copyright. But the most annoying thing is that you get a disabled kid dancing and miming to a song and because it's weird and interesting, the copyright law goes out the window. Copyright has so many double standards. I just claim "artist's impression." 😎
Great video!! I wanted to start a guitar channel and play guitar over the songs, do you know if you can share profits in that case? Or there is no way of monetizing these types of videos?
Nice video! When you say tutorials, is it possible to do tutorials about the song you wanted to cover, without playing it fully, just explaining the parts, either the drums, guitars, etc, or only generic tutorials are allowed? Thanks
It's frustrating that the band gets all the money that my videos make, but it's cool to know that I can help make money for my favorite bands. I don't think my videos get any revenue though. :(
Hey Casey. I have wanted to start making TH-cam drum cover for like so long! I have been watching ur tutorials on how to make one and I finally got the finances to make covers as well. It would be awesome if u could make a video on how to remove drum backing in different songs. (For example the drum backing in songs from Guns n' roses or Beyonce)
oK Last question I can leave what I have done on don't dispute it and it will count as watch hours, but I can't get paid for it that's not a problem I just need to change my tactics after I get those subscribers, and watch hours. What if I make videos on how to play popular songs? Well, i stoped drumming 20 years ago and I need to relearn a lot to be as good as I was. Ok, thank you for your time.
Finally, refreshing to find honest and 'useful' information. I can't tell you how many big 'TH-cam' drummers simply read and ignore emails asking them 'How To Play Covers - How To Make Money on TH-cam'? I guess they don't want you to know what they know, as it's competition. Thanks man.
Get yourself a converter program - there should be some free options that will work for you. Search "audio file converter" in Google and that should get you some results to look at.

its all bs
What about drumless tracks?
You have inspired me so mucho over this 5 years. I have had a hard time recently but I am back on track again with my channel. Thanks for all
Never clicked on a video faster
Nice job, my man. Glad to see someone at your success level spreading the gospel here. Thanks for the tips!

Only 5 years? Feel like i've been watching you forever. Nice video Man Thanks.
I had no idea that I would be in the top 10 comments, this is pretty cool. 🏆🏆🏆
Congrats! You'll be realy rich now :)

Thanks for sharing I will use some of these tips
You are a phenomenal drummer. This is unbelievable!!!!! I'm glad I found your channel!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁
what if one was to do a full band cover. So covering someone else's song without their official track/mp3 file? Is it possible to make money then?
Hi I use Drumless tracks which I believe originated from the game ‘rock band’, I play drums over the tracks and upload them to my channel (unlisted uploads at the moment as just trying things out). Bro I was your 7th sub😀
I have no plans to make money on TH-cam, but my plan is to do church drum cams, rollercoaster stuff, and daily vlogs.
so we have to change the sound of the song with audacity to avoid copyright ?
Very helpful, thanks for taking the time to make this! The pitch shifting is not working anymore, but fortunately only some videos have been blocked on mobile devices only, which I can deal with!
Rapper's Delight- Sugar Hill gang- plz do this I love this song and would love to see a cover. I don't mind whether it is the shortened version or the full version but plz this.

can you make a video going over your kit? I'm a new drummer and would love to see what you're using!
Very well explained finely someone said how it works thanks cooper👏👏👏
How does TH-cam detect copyright infringement? Is it through the audio only? Does the song title of the video play a part ?
What's the point of pitch changing when it still gets a copyright claim and demonetized?
If I have a copyright claim from a Brazilian channel? But I make Metallica guitar covers.. What can I do? At least I want the money to go to Metallica not to another person that doesn't own this. Even videos that I took from my phone in concerts are claimed by the same channel
so eg, linkin park heavy, i want to do a non monetary cover, its the original song, ive cut chesters vocals and left Kiiaras
can i sing along and post the cover without getting pulled? just audio.
sorry complete noob here.
This is the most well-done and informative video on this subject anywhere. Thank you!
Very helpful! But how do you get a song to play in the background while you drum to it? I have trouble doing that.
Can you use someone elses cover to play over or an alternate version on TH-cam?
Thank u so much! I have a question... If you put an only drums cover, like the uprising one, can you get money of it?
Yes, you absolutely can. If there is no original recording of the music present in the video, then you can monetize the video.
Thomas Surette Thank you very much
Yes, but it's not like a lot people will watch a drum or guitar video with no background track. Usually it's extremely boring opposed to a usual cover. So unless you've got a few million people eager to watch anything you upload, you won't get much views and money with that kind of videos.
Daniel Leonov Damn, haha thanks
Great video! How do you get the latest tracks into your recording software? I keep having to buy the CD format to get the MP3, whereas i would prefer to use a streaming service (apple music, spotify) and use the track that way? Is that do-able? This is referring to chart stuff, not RF music. Thanks! Big fan!
So on my channle i do garage band covers. If i make tge track myself by listening to the original will it affect income?
I've told so many people in their videos about this topic. They usually claim it's fair use etc... disclaimer disclaimer. I politely tell them I'm not trying to troll. I'm just educate them. Ignorance isn't an excuse!!! As an artist myself I hate the red tape for copyright. But the most annoying thing is that you get a disabled kid dancing and miming to a song and because it's weird and interesting, the copyright law goes out the window. Copyright has so many double standards.
I just claim "artist's impression." 😎
so audioblock has tracks that you can do a drum to. and also how much does it cost to buy the licence of a song
If i'm doing a cover of a song but I don't put the song in, I only play to it. Can I monetize the video and get money?
Is it possible to do drum covers just for fun? Not for making money? Or is the upoloading tio TH-cam alone enough to see it as a monetarization?
Ok if you can't money on someone else's song which makes a lot of sense, can I like advertise the gear I'm using?
Thanks this is really useful, I'm very small on TH-cam doing guitar covers on my channel and have so many problems with copyrights
Sam Shearn same here
Me too man! How have you been doing with this? I just started out making Metallica guitar tones!!
Can you live stream on TH-cam? You Can Do a live drum cover and live qanda.
thank you so much Casey for making this
Many thanks for such a helpful video. Regards from Joy
I just uploaded a Haruka Kanata Guitar Cover video and it got right away blocked in every country, WTF? How do i get past that?
So is changing the pitch the only way you can post a drum cover without it getting blocked?
How about a audience? Can he monetise a public performance?
If I don't use a video (such as a drum cover) to make money and only use it for entertainment, can it still violate copyright?
What made u want to get a new drum set?
What if I do a full band covering a different key. Would it recognize it? Do they search based on your video title as well as by audio?
Hey Casey! Thanks for the tips!
Thanks
Its My Birthday Today And Thank You Very Much For The Video Casey!!!
this is actually so helpful. thanks
But if I Played All The Intstruments and did vocals of some song, will it still be striked?
What if I just want to post without revenue?
They'll claim it and run ads on your video
Drum covers... don't get me started.
Nice tips Sir.
whats the website you use for pitch changing?
Just curious, if I state clearly that I do not intend to make money from music covers, can I still get hit for copyright?
Thanks Casey!
Im currently starting up my TH-cam channel right now. But how do you can you listen a track without the drums?
Yate_Drumming did you find out? I'd like to know where to find tracks minus drums
how to understand, decide if a song is "royalty free track"?
If I was going to look up a drumless version of the song will that be copyright
casey? what if i do a whole new arrangement? like frog leap studios? everything i write except lyrics?
and also like boyce ave? those acoustic covers?
would you be able to monetize a cover if you have a version of a song edited to have no vocals and pitched?
Can you please do a "Going to Pasalacqua" cover? (by Green Day)
Thank you for explaining this topic!
It's frustrating that the band gets all the money that my videos make, but it's cool to know that I can help make money for my favorite bands. I don't think my videos get any revenue though. :(
Can you make a cover of Tool (The Grudge) ?
Thanks
THANKS FOR SHARING! KEEP DRUMMING!
Hey Thanks for sharing some knowledge
Is it okay though to just pitch change 10%?
Try Moises app
Would you get copyright on a remix drum cover
Your such an inspiration
very cool!!!
oK Last question I can leave what I have done on don't dispute it and it will count as watch hours, but I can't get paid for it that's not a problem I just need to change my tactics after I get those subscribers, and watch hours.
Thanks man.
I need help. I use audacity and I'm trying to put songs in it, but because it's not MP3 I can't. Please help me.
Get yourself a converter program - there should be some free options that will work for you. Search "audio file converter" in Google and that should get you some results to look at.
