Incredibly beautiful song. I think the reason it was previously unreleased is because Greg's dad had recently died from stomach cancer at the age of 55. I think this song was his way of dealing with it and Keith and Carl (God Love Them) helped him out in recording this to deal with his grief. But it was just too personal and his dad's death to fresh to allow it to be released. All of Greg's ballads were very beautiful. This one though, it's words I'd have said to my dad if I could. He also died of cancer although it was lung instead of stomach. God Bless and Keep You Greg and Keith! Your music lives on with the millions of your fans around the world who still love you. I believe even though you both have left us, you can feel all that love up where you are in heaven. Both forever young and handsome, playing and singing in God's Band.
No, it was it was recorded during Tarkus. It's on the remastered dvd along with The Unknown Ballad which is on there too. I think Greg played some guitar and maybe some back up vocals on that song, but Keith and Carl did not play on it.
@@Diostillrocks agree with Diostillrocks. This is definitely not ELP material at the beginning of their career. This is the type of ELP that was around in 1976 or so, after works. But this song probably didn't make it to the album because it just doesn't really with with the ELP style.
This is better than anything that Greg did solo wise , a travesty it was sitting on the shelf for all those years, Gregs guitar is stupendous and singing so pure and heartfelt !
What a great song. Why never on an album. Greg Lake is a fantastic guitar player but obviously we don't to hear his guitar playing too often. This is a gem
I have a recording of an interview with ELP in the 70s. The interviewer asks Greg about his switch from guitar to bass while with King Crimson. Jokingly, Greg replied that you don't try to play guitar in a band with Robert Fripp.
Keith - Your music has been a part of me for 45 yrs - I can't believe you finished it like this - You could still compose and write music - Your family and friends and bandmates must be heartbroken - RIP my friend.
I have been dedicated to ELP since I was 15, and that is some 42 or 43 years now. I have total peace with the way Keith ended his life on earth. He was a musician and that was what he was. When he could not be a musician anymore, that was the time to end it all. Yes, and just like you, heartbroken.
My tribute to my father Leon Papadopoulos, thanks Greg Lake and ELP for this awesome song, but saddened that you and Keith have left us, but your music is timeless and masterful. Waiting to hear from Carl Palmer...
I just watched on You Tube a piece on the 10 most powerful songs of all time that make you cry. Tears in heaven was deservedly #1 by Clapton. They totally missed the boat. This should have been #2.... Powerful timeless song!!!
In tears. Rest in peace, Greg, thank you for treating your fans well and of course your excellent music and singing - the greatest voice in rock. Heartfelt sympathy to Greg's loved ones.
These cats have been putting down unbelievably great tracks since I was in high school! Greg with King Crimson, Carl with The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, and Keith with the Nice. A blessing the met, meshed, and put out some great music, and concert tours. Alas, time has caught up on Greg. He;s no longer the brash, extroverted virtuoso, and he's not as melodic from the years of smoking, but they still jam! Put the three of them on stage (see their Live from Albert Hall) and close your eyes!
WOW!!! some elp fan i am!! i never heard this before, what an awesome song. when this box set came out i didn't realize that there was any unreleased material on it. i just assumed i had everything on it already...this should have been released as a single at the time (1971).
If I recall correctly the line "It took a storm before my love really flowed" showed up later in another of Greg's exquisite songs, "C'est La Vie." The man's lyrics are pure poetry!
I have been listening to ELP since I was, literally, 1 years old - never heard this. My dad took me to see them in 1992. I was 7. 4th row. He held me up at the end and I shook Greg's hand at the stage. Amazing - musically, the solo has that lil circle of 5ths turn around just like Hey Joe
I lost my dad in 1989 also. This is what I would have said to him if I could. I miss you dad. Rest in peace Greg, you had the voice of an angel. So gifted with songwriting and touching people's hearts. Love you and your music always.
Gustosissimo brano anni 70 da cui eredita tutto il sound caratteristico e inconfondibile, un po' estraneo al consueto repertorio ELP. I feel the same towards my dad now - but its too little - too late- Cheers
I am bereft with Keith's throwing his life away ... I can only believe he was so severely depressed that he had lost perspective ... those harsh criticisms must have felt like knives ... I am 62 and I still love his 21st Century Classical piece on the Works album ... such a loss to the world of music and poetry. RIP
You have to understand, for someone like Keith Emerson who couldn't even play piano for himself anymore, much less in front of other people that's like a living death sentence. Sure you could say he could have lived another 20 years doing 'normal' activities like everyone else. However, Keith Emerson was not like anyone else. Just imagine the music in his head that he couldn't get out on an instrument anymore. Would have driven him to suicide anyways.

Wonderful song, thanks for sharing! I would be glad if somebody would add the lyrics...
Oh, my father, I feel so sad
As I stand upon your grave
I weep for the things that you never had
And the past that you never paved
I'm crying for the things that I never said
And all the love that I never showed
For my heart is as deep as the ocean's bed
And it took a stone before my love freely flowed
While my body is young
And my eyes are old
With the wisdom
Of a loved one's death
But all my suffering
And sorrow will turn to gold
Which I'll treasure with every breath
It's a bitter lesson that I have learned
Seems a shame it was too late for you
But the love between us will always be interred
In a place in my heart built for you

@joanaiaia - I had never heard this one before-it's beautiful! Thanks for posting it!
Why has this never been released?
Maybe because it's a deeply personal song - grief takes time.
The style didn't fit into the ELP formula either. Most of their songs didn't have this much electric guitar in and there is no moog or organ in it.
@@Diostillrocks Would have made a great entry for Greg Lake's first solo LP(if he'd done one in 1971). However, that would have not been good for ELP!
