  • Hi, here we have a 1969 Snoopy watch made by TIMEX. Can it tick again?
    If you would like to support these videos, please click here / mymatevince
    Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

    Great vid, Vince. If you ever get another Timex from this era with an M22/24 movement, you should try servicing it according to the Timex service manuals:
    1. Remove dial and hands, detach stem, remove from case
    2. Loosen balance wheel screw one quarter turn
    3. Place movement in ultrasonic cleaner using Essence of Renata (or white alcohol) for three minutes
    4. Tighten balance wheel screw
    5. Place movement in naphta lighter fluid for several minutes
    6. Dry with compressed air
    7. Oil all pins, do not lubricate mainspring
    Basically, these movements weren't meant to be serviced in the traditional sense. Timex specified the "dunk and swish" method of servicing, and it seems to be the best method of attacking built up grime without tearing down a movement that wasn't meant to be torn down.

      Good advice mate! I just did a similar service to this very watch that was sold as "Not Working." Did #1 with the addition of carefully removing the hour hand washer, gear, and minute hand gear because they easily fall off and get lost. I did a lighter fluid to 99.9 IPA to a final lighter fluid wash and the Watch accuracy went from - 3 minutes to + 30 seconds! If anyone tries this for the first time, be careful of the dial tabs. They are easy to break!! Cheers!!

    Firstly Vince massive thanks for the shoutout any traffic my way is always welcome.
    You did a great job on this one! Zero jewel watches are notorious for being a total nightmare so you did set yourself quite a challenge there.
    Persistence paid off and I felt your pain with 7 pivots to line up!
    Really pleased for you .
    Did not see you oil the pivots on the dial side which could also help and the up and down trace could be a manor of things including a bent pivot.
    Envious of the Weishi 1900 , nicer machine than my 1000

      Completely agree, I've only fully serviced one pin pallet, getting all those tiny non jewl holes lined up wasn't my favourite thing 😂 but great feeling when they do. Love it when my retro watches drops a video and love it when my mate vince drops a video, then to find out it's watch video it's a double win 💪

      I oiled the dial side from the wheel side before putting the wheels on. The Weishi is nice, loved seeing the Omega trace so close and straight, shame about the Snoopy one, looked like the Alps! 🤣

      @danilko1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you send the watch to Mike, for a proper cleaning and re-assembly, I bet the accuracy would improve. The un-jeweled movement is not worth the effort, but as a legacy Snoopy watch, it's still worth something. A kids toy, works pretty good for what's in side. I bet it hasn't gotten much use. It was worn a while and tossed in a drawer for much of its life.

    you are brave taking this apart. lol When i was a kid, early 80s, i bought two Peanuts watches at a yard sale for $5 , neither worked. But i was able to fix them by opening them up and unwinding them. From what I found out It seems lots of kids watches get damaged because they over wind them , or wear them in the bath. Sometimes over winding breaks the stem, which usually requires a watch maker or jeweler to repair. But i'd suspect no parts are available today so they'd have to make the parts. The two i repaired a snoopy and a woodstock, both with the denim bands. And many years later i found a charlie brown one and bought that for way to much. But today they're worth a lot more. Great job on the repairs! Your problem solving skills get better every video!

  • @TheScottyvdubs
    @TheScottyvdubs 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Well done getting that top bridge back on, it's worst part of a pin pallet movement, also don't worry about the trace on the time graph, they don't tend to read pin lever watches to well, to noisy, more suited to swiss lever. Also put oil on the escape wheel faces in about 3 points evenly spaced it will help a lot with these types of movement. A real fast (bodgey)
    Way to get these going is to wash the whole movement in lighter fluid, dry then oil, also you don't need to worry about the mainspring on a timex they have a special self lubrication coating. Awesome job, more watches please 👍

    Good job, Vince. The end shake on the balance is adjustable with the cup screw. Also, the pallet pins on the escapements and the impulse pin need a drop of oil. This often improves the amplitude dramatically on these zero jewel movements.

    For an American railroad display, I bought a cheap old Westclox "Scotty" pocket watch as a stand-in for a conductor's railroad grade (expensive) pocket watch. The watch did not need to work for display and it did not run when I wound it. Just for the heck of it, I opened the back and gave the mechanism a shot of WD40. The watch started right up! However, obviously, I do not recommend doing that to any decent watch. (Sorry to all the watchmakers who fainted after reading my comment above.)

    I have the same Snoopy watch from when I was a kid in the 70s. It was working up until a few years ago when I seemed to over-wind it. It's good to know they can be repaired, although I don't think I will try to fix it myself.

    • @SkippyVinyls
      @SkippyVinyls ปีที่แล้ว +1

      UPDATE: Your video gave me the confidence to have a go at fixing my Snoopy Timex watch. As I said above, I'd thought it was over-wound, but every web search for how to deal with an over-wound watch suggested that you can't actually over-wind a watch and that the issue lies elsewhere. So having watched your video I knew to concentrate on the balance, not the spring. Last night I worked at it for about an hour, cleaned out some dust and got the balance to loosen up. Gradually the balance start to run for a little bit longer each time, 2 seconds, then 4 seconds, then 10 seconds. I put it back together then wore it on my wrist today and it's been keeping good time. I'm amazed I successfully managed to get it going again. Thanks for for making this really useful video.

    Feel free to take to the acrylic crystal with some fine sandpaper. I've done it loads of times. Works well. Also, any metal polish will work to finish off. You don't need to pay for polywatch which is relatively expensive (small tube too).

    good job Vince, things like this I stay well clear of, even as a child I got such shakey hands that watches were, and still are a definate no go for me. and great outcome as well. I was given a mechanical watch by the school caretaker when I was in infants got it home, and father taken it straight off me, and hardly seen it since, so been in a box somewhere for 40 years, only to be warn on special occassions was my fathers wording, but never came out of its box again!! seems to be a common thing with my father. anything nice or useful would always dissappear within minutes of getting it home.

    I'm a watchmaker and I've attempted to repair these in the past to no avail. I could get it run again but it would stop again after a week. They're almost impossible to service properly. I would just run them through the cleaning machine and if they came out running that was good enough for me. The problem is the pivots are worn, the pins wear out and the mainspring loses it springiness.

    Hello Vince...your vids are most entertaining. I work on/restore old American pocket watches (not a pro, just a hobbyist amateur), and for cleaning movements IPA isn't the best choice. Naphtha (lighter fluid) is much better as it dissolves the old dried up oil (which is a must to use on the pivots of each wheel). And too much oil can cause problems/attract dust & grime, so definitely use a watchmakers oiler (or a small pin/pinhead can substitute in a pinch). And be sure to work in a well ventilated area as naphtha fumes aren't especially good for you.
    Thanks, and keep up the excellent content!

    Brilliant stuff Vince! Goes to prove the quality of old tech, even stuff intended for kids to use.
    I went to the "Good Grief, Charlie Brown!" Charles M Schultz exhibition at Somerset House, London back in 2019, where they had various original sketches, comic strips from over the years, artwork (original and artists' tributes), memorabilia and a biography of the man's life - all of which was loaned from California's Schultz Museum. Definitely was worth it.
    To think about the national, international and continued success of Peanuts (or Lil Folks as it should've been named) for 50 year run of newspaper comic strips, plus many cartoons and merchandise. The characters were based on his exaggerated personality traits and flaws, so kind of predates Pixar's Inside Out in a way. He died shortly after announcing his retirement in 2000. What a bloke.

    An excellent job esp given that the particular Timex was deemed a disposable unfixable movement. With them unjewelled "tin platers" grease often works better than oil. I actually have a Ruhla on the deck in front of me which has an even simpler tin plate movement and I am doing it like they did in East Germany, little jar cap full of naptha enough to soak the mechanics but not the dial... wait for to dry and then dab in oils or grease on the movey spinny bits and job will be a good 'un :) My brother had this exact watch and like all our Timex in the 70's was pretty awful, my last Timex was the infamous red LED which fell to pieces or burnt out on days ending with "y", after my newspaper editor mum had it out with Timex getting her money back she bought me a Sekonda that didn't fall to pieces, stem stayed in, crystal didn't just fall out and lasted a good part of my childhood ramping it up on my Raleigh Chopper. I don't have Timex in my collection, loads of Sekonda :) Was wondering, does Snoopy have a My Mate Vince watch do you think???

      Perhaps not so much not knowing the value as just needing/wanting to be rid of stuff. When my Grandfather died, his estate rejected reasonable offers for some of his collections. Some eighteen years later when his house was finally listed for sale, we could not give some things away and the residue went to landfill (or was left for the new owners to dispose of).

    The Timex movements are simple to clean. You just swish it around in some lighter fluid and let it dry. You CAN lube the pivots, but it's probably not worth the time.

    Serial number on the dial dates it to 1978. As someone who has worked on hundreds of Timex, I would have just oiled it (taking a Timex apart is a PITA). lol

    @My Mate Vince I think you just sold me on getting a mechanical watch, I loved this video!
    Though, a question for you, have you ever encountered a quarts watch where the lighting function was broken? I'm not sure how to attack it.

    I love your channel and content. I don't care for the watch videos, but I always let them play from beginning to end to help you out. Also. Gotta HIT THAT LIKE BUTTON.

    That program is probably not worth a lot, but to a WBA fan it will be awesome.

    So it was that small piece that was bent down. I saw it as you were pointing it out and I thought it didnt look right. Its still bent down but more adjustment may break it, so good job on not trying to fix a working thing lol.

      Maybe Emma, it starting ticking happily after that, unless the bending it up seated it in the pivot hole more???

      @@Mymatevince yeah, I am just saying that its still bent but you were wise to stop bending it more. Wasnt so long ago when you would try and get something perfect and it would break completely.

      @@DEmma1972 Haha, yeah that's true. I was just so happy to see it ticking that I wasn't pushing my luck.

    Check if it’s an automatic first.My father in law had a 80s seiko in a drawer for decades as he thought it used a battery and couldn’t be bothered to get it changed.He was amazed when I shook it inti life 😆
