To all looking to purchase a 95-00 ls400. Be prepared to replace your power steering pump around 200k miles. Its a must because as it leaks it drips directly on to the alternator. Just finished mine last weekend. 170 dollars with the core. Installed in about 4 hours. Quoted over 1k thru dealer. Get a new serpintine belt while your in there and check for play on the tensioner.
I’ve had 8 Lexus, all V8’s and I can confirm they are brilliant on fuel. My first 95 LS400 got 8.2 L/100 on a trip from Sydney to Adelaide. My later 98 LS400 got 9.2 L/100 on the same trip. I average 10.9-11.9 in the City from my two 98 LS 400’s over a five year period , it increases about one to two litres in Summer with the A/C flat out. My two LS 430’s were about 1-2 litres heavier. My LS 460 about the same as the 430’s. Out of all the cars I rate the 400’s as the very best of the lot. The 460 was soooo much faster, but bigger, heavier and more complicated. The 430’s while beautifully built, quiet and quick were not up to the level of the 400’s which I believe are built better, and better to drive, much better handling and more manoeuvrable plus are more comfortable. I’ve also had a couple of SC430’s one of which I still have - a six speed which can’t be compared as are different car to the LS. My opinion is that you simply cannot go past any of these cars, they have been SOOOOO reliable, having had practically nil issues with any of the 400’s in particular. A good comparison is my 400 with 200,000 kms which I had when I purchased the same car with 45,000 kms, the higher Kay car drove practically the same as the lower Kay one - unbelievable. Just buy the best one you can and look after it and I you are away. Another incredible thing..... I’ve never lost any money on any of them when I sold them, in fact I think that the 400’s and SC430’s have actually increased in value over the last five years.
Truth, I've had 1993 LS400, 1995 SC400, 2010 LS460. I would say 1993 LS400 was the best one. LS460 is faster and heavier but I don't feeling so happy on driving it.
i have a 99 ls-400 same color.180,000 runs like new Nakamichi stereo, 27-18 mpg on premium gas. Can easily cruise at highway speeds well over 100 mph. IMO the greatest stock luxury production car ever made.
That seems pretty high actually, even higher than our 7 Series. Depends on how you drive it though, if it's mostly city over highway then it makes sense.
The E38 is definitely not idea for super hot climates. I've always been worried about mine even here, the radiators don't seem to be that strong and I've been concerned about it failing. There aren't many LS 400s for sale here either, we'll be covering that a bit on Friday with our Showdown episode on this LS 400 and our 740iL.
In mixed suburban driving, I get exactly 20 mpg most of the year (without AC). In very cold weather it drops to 19.2 to 19.4 because these really run rich until normal operating temp. is reached. With expressway driving at a steady 65 mph, flat terrain, etc., the best I've gotten is about 35 mpg. Without being really careful, the more usual is about 30.
The PS pump is actually above the alternator, as I recall. Yes, the pump can leak and it's usually due to the front seal weakening. It happened on mine many years ago. Adding some Lucas PS pump sealer stopped the leak completely.
I had a black LS400 here in the UK with an lpg conversion, I bought it expecting really nothing at all as it was super cheap and it was straight after ownership of a 750iL E38.. and my god, one of the best cars I’ve ever had. The kickdown was insane, seriously fast for a car of its size. The sound is amazing, the comfort is second to none. What a car
First of THANK YOU for this video, it just gave me more motivation and inspiration to get my 98 LS400 to look clean again. Currently has minor exterior cosmetics that needs to be taken care of and timing belt to be done in about a month. Sitting on 216,000 km and still drives like new, regardless, wonderful review on the LS400!
I've had a '98 for 19+ years. Without a doubt, the last generation of the LS400 was (is) the best passenger car of the modern era. I've owned M-Bs (NEVER again) and other brands. Friends and neighbors have had everything from Fords to Range Rovers and Bentleys. Most have now switched to Lexus and are very happy they did. I avoid the dealerships, of course, and do routine maintenance like oil/filter changes myself. After all these years, I still smile each time I slide behind the wheel of this remarkable piece of Japanese engineering and construction. If you can find a good example of the LS400 or LS430, just buy it. You'll never regret the decision.
As soon as someone says things like, "they're much better now", it's acknowledgement that past or subsequent models were very defective. I see very few W210s on the road here in this suburban metro. area because of rust, transmission, suspension, engine lube problems, etc., etc. Nope, NEVER again. My Lexus remains a bullet-proof joy to own and to drive.
Don't make like this anymore, I sold my 97 coach edition back in 2010 and have been kicking my self in the nuts ever since. Quite frankly the best quality car I have ever owned, and that's with 225k miles at the time, everything was tight and the engine was incredible

I haven't had an LS since I last sold my 2005. I also had a 93, and a 99. I just bought a 2000 Platinum Series LS with 67k miles, 2 owners, and 30 pages of service history, all done at Lexus. I can't wait for it to be delivered! I'll probably never get rid of it.

I was lucky. My mechanic called me about a car. All maintenance records, garaged, beautiful condition, original owner, 150K miles. Had one day to decide. Looked up everything. Gave him $5200 cash, spent $1200 on new wheels and tires. Been a wonderful 6 months and every time I jump in, I know it was an excellent choice.
Very nice, and congrats on the purchase! 150k mi is almost nothing, there's still an insane amount of life left in that! Hopefully you get to enjoy it for a long while.
I had a 98 with 170k that was a fantastic car. It was very quiet and looked like new. The only negatives I can recall were that the speedo read fast by about 4 mph which is a known issue, and the digital display for the climate control and clock were getting weak. Mine had the factory navigation that only knew the major cities in the US, and by the time I owned it in 2013 was hopelessly out of date. Still, I have fond memories of it as my first Lexus. One day I test drove a used LS460 and the difference was night and day. I had to get the 460 and kept it for many years.
Very nice! The speedometer is probably designed like that, as our E38 BMW 7 Series has the same sort of display, making it seem like you're driving faster than you actually are. We've been told that it's designed this way to prevent speeding, so people will think they're going faster than they actually are.
My work van newer nissan nav sucks, i use my smart phone and never been wrong once in 5 yrs, google maps finds even out of the way holes in the wall in rural areas.
I own a 2000 LS 400 Platinum Edition V-8 less than 140K miles currently. I can attest it will get 29-30 mpg on southern california highways and rolling hills. It'll easily drop less than 20 mpg as low as 16.5 mpg sometimes stop and go traffic around town. It's hard to believe this V-8 engine gets that kind of fuel economy on the highway but it can and does.
wholeNwon just be prepared to replace the air suspension and touchscreen if you have them. I took care of both those issues, did the touch screen preemptively, and now I pretty much trust it with my life.
Purchased a 2000 ls400 a few months ago has 187k miles. I went to Lexus owners website and looked up the vehicle by vin # and found extensive dealer maintenance including timing belt twice. I love driving it .
Glad you were finally able to get this out. Just a few things I wanted to add, the starter WILL go bad. It is 100% certain. It is also very difficult to get to. Mechanic will charge 5 hours labor. Otherwise from a mechanical standpoint the engine and transmission on this car are really amazing. Extremely reliable. If you do buy an LS you will spend a lot of money of suspension upkeep as many parts wear out. I was a little surprised about how much money I have had to put in my LS mainly due to suspension upkeep.
Good to know, thanks! We'd love to find an LS 400 with the air ride suspension to see how it compares, but also to find out what the actual maintenance cost differences would be. I know with the BMW community common problems can often be overblown, so I'm wondering if it might be the same with the air suspension with the Lexus, in that a small number of complaints ends up becoming the norm.
I heard the air suspension was a nightmare and expensive hence why it is recommended to stay away at this age. I wonder if this model you tested had any upgraded or replaced suspension components. The bushings wear out in the strut rods (every LS has this issue within 100k miles), it creates a very loud clunk over bumps. Shocks go bad too. This car feels very boaty and wanders when the suspension gets old. Otherwise the handling is a lot better than most people assume, not like a 7 Series but still planted. Anyway, when can we expect an LS430 review? While it is a considerable improvement over the LS400, the LS400 still looks better.
I've had my '98 for almost 20 years. Fortunately it has the standard strut suspension. None of the soft rubber bushings have been replaced yet but one did squeak requiring a spray with rubber-safe silicone. I"m told that AT-205 works well for this, too. The body bushing for the front sway bar is a little worn as well, but it's a pretty simply DIY repair and might use polyurethane for that one. The starter replacement will be very time-consuming some day...but not yet. I love this masterpiece of Japanese engineering, design and QUALITY CONTROL.
I have a 94 UCF10 and I can attest to the spongy, nautical feel of steering. I can also attest to the car being the most comfortable and reliable landboat that I've ever owned. Fun fact: when the alarm is fully armed (the car has a 30-second "pre-arming" stage after alarming before it's ARMED-armed), you can pull the driver side door handle (as if you're trying to open the door) and the front interior dome light and the keyring lights will all go on for a moment. It's the small attention to detail that makes it worth it: aside from the keyring light, the front seat belt buckles have lights as well. You also have the exterior handle keyhole light. Literally lights everywhere. LOVE my LS. She's big and steers like a drunk donkey, but it's like riding a sofa on a hovercraft.
That's really cool! We're definitely going to have to find a first generation LS to film all of those lights. It's a little harder in the daytime, but we'll definitely make a note of it when we get the chance to.
Fred Acaylar I don't know whether this will help your perception of the steering feel but I had a leak in the front seal of my PS pump and added some Lucas PS pump sealer. That worked well and had the added benefit of changing the feel of the steering. I really liked the new, somewhat stiffer handling. Maybe you would, too.
I have waited for the LS400 review forever! I'm thinking about getting one of these for my next car, but an E38 is also very tempting. Is there any plans for a BMW E34 review? Would be fun to see your thoughts on my current car :)
We've had some requests for the E34 recently, and I believe we've placed it in the top 10 on perpetualradio.ca of cars we're looking for. We don't see many of them on the road, we met a few owners last year at the BMW Car Club of Canada's Hamilton meet up, but they weren't overly interested in having their cars featured. We're hoping to make that happen in the new year though!
Finding one is the issue really. I live in Sweden where these are pretty rare because most people who bought a new luxury car in the 90's either bought an Audi A8 D2, BMW 7-series E38 or Mercedes S-class W140. I really want one but the interior looks kinda boring compared to the E38 that is my other option, but maybe the better reliability would make the LS the better choice. I guess a 430 would be even better, but they aren't as good looking exterior wise imo, and are still very expensive unlike the few 400's that pop up from time to time. Seeing PRN do a Testdrive Showdown between the LS400 and E38 would be great! Maybe even throw in a W140 for good measure too?
Congratulations for living in Sweden. You're very fortunate in so many ways. When I pass drivers of the cars you mentioned, I just shake my head and chuckle. As P.T. Barnum said so long ago, "There's a sucker born every minute." Owning M-B's was, indeed, more exciting because I never knew whether the cars were going to leave me stranded again or when the next thing was going to break.
I've had my '98 for 21 years of perfection. ALL of the Germans are absolute junk by comparison. Strangers still ask whether it might be for sale....NEVER.. Don't let dealer "service" near it, if you're lucky enough to have one. Do as little to it as possible; you can't make it "better".
I got a 1998 ls400 for $1500 super clean and clean title only leaked problem on the main seal I replaced it only cost $30. No more leak. Plus I have two low mileage engine and transmission at 104k miles and 171k miles😂. So I will drive this car forever.....
MERCEDESBENZS600 S500 .yes it has air suspension it rides smooth but I got extra regular shocks where I got the low mileage engine. I have a lot of extra parts. To be honest this car is easy to fix easier than my Corolla.
People don’t know how easy these are to work on, they aren’t that complicated and almost everything is easy to get to. And most of the parts are cheap. I converted my air suspension to standard and converted my touch screen to a modern stereo and manual HVAC controls, all of the information is out there.

This vehicle delivered fit to finish smoothness that successfully blended the elegance of Mercedes and the performance of BMW. Even though Infiniti rolled the pinball along the trunklines and doors in its commercials, Lexus could balance champagne glasses on its running engine. I think I’d try that too : )
I have a '98 LS400.. 350,000km.. had it 12 years... best car I've ever owned.. lots of mods... 10% better fuel economy by getting rid of the engine fan and fitting electric fan... Nothing has ever gone wrong with it.....
@@PRNTestDrive The only design flaw I can pick is the drinks holder... it's not seep enough... I had a full 600ml bottle of Coke in it and hit the brakes one day.. the bottle flew forward and sprayed Coke all over the sound system head and ruined it... however in replacing it with a bluetooth Pioneer I can now listen to my iphone music & phone... Mind you, the Pioneer is UGLY and spoils the whole look of the dash... :( (I wanted to replace it with another original one but I had to run music from my phone thru this cassette thing with a wire attached and the sound quality was only average. And yes, I'm 60 and quite confident this car will see me out !
Another car with a sun visor above the rear view mirror is the Audi A4 B5 model. Its a great idea worked well on the Audi not sure why it never continued on later models. Likewise with Lexus.
Good to know! I wonder how many older cars would have had this feature. I guess they stopped doing it more recently since most cars have sensors in front of the mirror and typically have the dotted pattern around it which helps block out some glare. Also I'd imagine they break easily. I know on the Acura Vigor it felt pretty solid, but the smaller hinge on this Lexus could easily break.

I searched for some time and couldn't find a good one at a reasonable price. Too many of these LS400s have been ratted out by the local teen ricer scene and the remaining good ones are being posted for $8,000 sometimes. The closest I found was a low-mileage Acura RL listed at $4200 that sold very quickly. I ended up getting a beat ass 2010 Crown Vic P7B that already needs a trans (junkyard warranty) a week after purchase. I do own one Toyota product - a 2003 MR2 Spyder and it has been steadfast reliable and a blast to drive in my first year of ownership. I'd sell the Crown Vic and daily the MR2 before I'd do the opposite. I nearly got a 2002 Sequoia with only 150k miles for the blazing low price of $3800 but it had obviously been flipped on its side and repaired enough to be driven. Somebody bought it about 2 hours after I said I'd pass. Boy that thing was nasty inside and the steering was way fucked up but the drivetrain felt like it was brand new. I might still get a gen 1 Sequoia for their low prices and crazy reliable 4.7L V8 and overall build quality.

That's certainly true. The reality is this car isn't 'quick' by today's standards, but in the 90s it was plenty fast. Other luxury cars didn't start focusing on full-size performance until the early 2000s.
PRN - Perpetual Radio Networks please make sure it's the ultra luxury version with all the bells and whistles cz for it's time it was really advanced imo. Plus the ls400 jdm specs came with reclining and massage rear seats and air suspension. Just FYI if u didn't know already. (Which I think u probably do). Awesome content btw. 😊😊
We do try our best to get the top trim models, but it's always difficult tracking down willing owners. New cars we have an easier time since the manufacturers often provide journalists with the best options. We'll definitely see what we can do though!
Everting I’ve heard is good, I’m going to replace my LS400 with one of the later ones with the 6 speed. Bigger trunk, more aerodynamic. Going to try to find one without the touch screen and standard suspension, just like my LS400.
Only one thing I don’t like, the trunk is too small for a family because of the fuel tank location. I’m going to “upgrade” to an LS430 for this reason. 6 speeds and better aerodynamics will be nice as well. Hopefully the reliability is just as good.
Thanks to your video I discovered the Lexus LS400 party trick of opening all the windows with the key fob! Very cool. I doubt I'd ever need all the windows open at once but still a neat trick. I have a 98 with 271,500 miles (not sure what that is in km) and it's still going strong. All the luxury features still work great. Love this car! By the way, would the windows also come down if you put the key in the door and held it in the unlock position?
Glad to hear you're doing well with your LS! I think the windows should open via the door key hole, at least on BMWs they work that way so I'd have to imagine the same for this.

Exterior needs some love, but the interior was in pretty good shape overall, nothing was broken and there weren't any rips or tears in the seats. Even the leather hadn't worn out in high-traffic area places like our 7 Series was at the same milage when we bought it.
Beige might not win over any hearts, but in black this car would look great, just like the E38 and W220. We love all 3 cars, but a silver W220 or E38 look boring in our opinion, but it's hard to go wrong with black!
That's what we were told by the owner, however we've decided to stop reporting fuel economy numbers on these classic episodes unless we can do our own independent testing.
I'd go for the facelift personally, the design changes are pretty subtle, but do give it a slightly more modern look. Though both still look great today in our opinion, so you can't really go wrong either way!
The power numbers we listed came from the manufacturer. Sometimes we find the year & market the vehicle was sold in can vary those numbers. We see it often with the luxury cars.
Not fast by today's full-size luxury car standards, but for the time it was certainly quick. We're sorry if we made it seem like we felt it wasn't quick during our drive of the car.
This one was an aftermarket screen the owner put in. Unfortunately there's no navigation on this one, but we did feature the succeeding generation LS 430 which did have navigation optional from the factory.
The S 600 would be the better car on both points. Leg room in the back of the Lexus is decent for a full-size sedan, but hard to compete with any of the long wheelbase models like Mercedes was producing. The ride quality on either was quite soft which we like, but the Mercedes definitely felt better. We've noted that the 3 different generations of S-Class we've driven all have similar superb road feel, something that helps make the S-Class stand out against the competition.
Definitely! Those Lexus models are pretty darn reliable, if you're looking for a comfortable, reliable daily driver, that's easily something we'd recommend.
I have this car with 210k miles. It's an amazing car but be honest with yourself: it's 20 year old car. Your power steering will leak on alternator and it will fail. Front lower control arms are weak and need to be replaced more often than usual otherwise you will get not-so-lexusy knocking in suspension. Starter will fail and replacing it is a BITCH. Trust me, i've done it 2 months ago.
Any car will require maintenance, especially at this age. But the trade off is having a seriously good ride for a fraction of what a new one would cost today. Hold onto yours if you can! I think we'll start to see interest in these increase.

Hope you can make it happen Lebron! Definitely try and get the full service history for the vehicle, often we find these cars are still owned by the original owner and getting that information can be key when figuring out what type of maintenance its going to need down the road.

Not being able to drive it is certainly a negative, but that’s also the direction the industry seems to be moving in anyway. Honestly when I was researching these cars I didn’t find anything aside from the regular maintenance that comes up, there’s not really any major concerns or red flags. Does this dealership offer some sort of return policy? If it does that would definitely help you out in case there’s something really wrong with it.

Starters do go after a while. Unfortunately the LS starter is hard to get to, as you know. The alternator sits under the PS pump and the front seals occasionally leak onto the alternator. They are hard on batteries and people sometimes jump start them and run the cars on really dead batteries or "test" them by disconnecting the battery while the engine is running and ruin the alt. Has the trans. been serviced correctly and only Toyota ATF used? Did someone flush it (bad)? Unless abused, I'd have expected it to have lasted a LOT longer. If it has the right fluid, you could try draining out a qt. and replacing that with Lucas ATF treatment. It's surprising how often that helps slipping. It's one of the really great cars in the world and a shame to see it "die".
wholeNwon i can’t speak for the first owner but my father drove it smooth and did all the servicing himself. As for me let’s just say I’m not as gentle, nothing serious but I do like to use the ect mode for the transmission.

It certainly should be! These are incredible vehicles that continue to serve owners well into the high mileage club. As long as you have the vehicle inspected first by a trusted mechanic you should be good!
interesting. Know a guy who had a E38 with the 4.4 but his was 16-19L/100km but then again you probably follow speed limits and accelerate like a grandma if your V8 consumes 11.1L
My 2014 Mazda3 GT = 7.9L/100km. The best I could get with my 1998 LS400 = 8.9L/100km in highway driving with a feather foot. The mentioned 8L/100km seems incredible.
I work at a dealer the older lexus still rides better than new ones and 100 times more reliable. Cost a portion of new one and really to me looks better has more room and is mor comfortable. As far as options I need nop back up camera mirors work fine I need no infotainment center big screens look lie carp ruin interior lines all I need is cd of choice and gps when I go where I need gps my smartphone and google maps free with phone have taken me to farms in middle of nowhere every time i needed it. Something about the older lexus just tickles my fancy and I do not need the latest greatest, just a car that at 90 mph on a good road needs good cd player to keep me from dozing off as old lexus like sitting in a easy chair but doing 90 mph LOL
I always found this Gen. Lexus to be a very well built and put together car, but compared to the Same Gen. Competitors such as the Mercedes Benz, Audi and BMW…. the Lexus was quite boring ! Could you imagine if Lexus was building cars back then that were just as exciting to drive and look at as the cars I just mentioned plus the quality? O my God, they would have whooped their competitors asses even more!

Perhaps but I've owned both M-B's and the LS400. The thrill of M-B is wondering when the car will leave you stranded next or what else will break soon. Yes, mine had expert, by the book maintenance.
So you are saying a IS300 that competes with a BMW 3 Series is not fun to drive? Do realize the SC300/GS300 and IS300 were derived from the Toyota Supra. The JDM version of the GS300 known as the Toyota Aristo that came with a turbo charged 2jz. It was essentially a 4 door supra. The IS-F was one of the first F Marque car launched in 2007 long before the LFA. It competed with the Mercedes AMG and BMW M cars. It had a V-8 engine. Not all Lexus's are boring like many people think if you do a little research.
You know some NEW mini SUVs that we have here in Australia (particularly a Korean one ) take 13.5L per 100km. And greenie idiots call ANYTHING LONG WHEEL BASE as "gas guzzlers". Of course checking the actual MPG isn't the type of thing any rocket scientist greenie would even think of....
That's crazy! I think the only vehicles we've driven this year with a fuel economy that bad have been the Cadillac Escalade, CTS-V, and maybe the Jeep Grand Cherokee. A lot of these older Lexus models are crazy good on fuel, it's too bad they don't classify them properly for you.

Hopefully it’s nothing too serious! The LS is going to be one of the most reliable cars you can buy for the money, but if it wasn’t taken care of before you might be in for more issues. It all depends on service history. Hopefully you get it sorted out!
Perpetual Radio Networks it has 118k on it and seems to have been looked after. It drives really well, but it no longer revs over 4k :/ it only does it hot so I'm hoping it's just a coolant temp sensor...
@@RustedPistons Hello, good chance it may be your ecm/ecu on the inside of your car you have to take your glove box off to get to it. It's a very common issue with earlier lexus / toyota cars especially that gets overlooked when diagnosing by a lot of people. There is a long list of symptoms that happen when capacitors start failing inside your ecm. The good news is if you are handy and can get it out of there which isn't terribly difficult, you can order the proper capacitors very affordably and bring the ecm to say someone who is tech savvy and repairs circuit boards for a living like a computer repair person. The capacitors themselves will cost you less than 20 dollars ordering them, you just have to find the right person that can remove the old ones and put the new ones in, easy to do if you are experienced with a soldering iron or find someone who is. Here is a list of symptoms of failing ecm capacitors on earlier lexus / toyota cars; ● problems in getting into diagnostic mode or scanner says "no communication" ● random dropping into "limp home" mode ● weird shifting problems ● OBD port is unresponsive, seems dead ● throwing random fault codes ● engine won't rev out/rev limits at 2000 or less rpm ● engine runs like crap, then suddenly runs fine again ● random not starting or cutting out ● low idle or erratic idle ● often very hard to start, requires starting fluid ● transmission will not automatically shift, only manual shift is possible ● transmission jerks from 1st to 2nd gear, and kinda slips from 2nd to 3rd ● no A/C compressor operation ● idle speed rolling up and down, or sometimes too low and sometimes too high ● speedometer not working reliably ● speed (cruise) control not working ● tachometer not working sometimes ● air bag light flickering intermittently ● A/C going into reset with flashing front defog light (front defog light typically flashing 10 times) ● check engine light on sometimes, but no codes stored, often in concert with ECT light ● ECU not communicating with scanners or not displaying codes with jumper installed ● bad sulfur exhaust smell in concert with not running right above Here is an excellent write up on this on a clublexus website, there's everything you need to know on addressing this issue; www.clublexus.com/forums/ls-1st-and-2nd-gen-1990-2000/656360-all-my-crazy-lexus-issues-solved-ecu-leaking-capacitor.html
@@moonshinefuel thanks mate - it's been fine for a year or so now. I think the previous owner tootled it about town and never exercised the VVT. I changed the oil and gave it some motorway blasts over a week or so and it loosened up and has been sweet since. I love the car so much - normally sell them by now but this one is staying put!
That's true, and it was also the first generation LS they tested it on. Really awesome technology, but likely expensive to produce in a production vehicle.
Very few of them did, it was an option from Lexus but after going through a number of the enthusiast forums we've found that a very small number of them ever optioned it, so finding one might be difficult.
You don’t want it. I replaced mine myself when the one of four air struts failed. Fortunately I was able to sell the other parts to offset the cost of stock springs and Bilsteins. Now it rides almost as well as before, handles better, and won’t break again.
holy sheet, 8L/100km, is the same consumption than a bmw e60 530d 6 spd automatic without city driving. also those seats looks more comfortable than my sofa, if i drive such a car, probably i fall asleep after 1 hours of freeway driving lol
Which S class? The W220 and W211 had the early airmatic that does develop leaks that are hard to find but the W221 was really sound and airmatic issues are rare.
You should check out Mercedessource, its a great channel. In his videos about the W220 he talks about the possible and common leaks as well as parts and prices. Those expensive shocks can usually be rebuilt and dont fail *that* often. A well maintained W220 is not very expensive to run really, just dont buy the cheapest one.
It's hard to say for sure without owning both, but we imagine they suffered the same type of issues like Joe Barbaro mentioned. It seems that fewer LS 400s were equipped with air ride making them hard to find, so parts would also likely be harder to acquire.
For sure, Lexus didn't exist until the early 90s while BMW and Mercedes had been pumping out cars for decades. The Lexus might not have sold as much earlier on, but they're definitely killing it with sales today, and not to mention this second generation LS 400 was also incredibly popular with buyers.

this 1999 LS 400 goes from 0-60 in 6.2 secs. That's pretty fast. This car is a burner for that year and size.

To all looking to purchase a 95-00 ls400. Be prepared to replace your power steering pump around 200k miles. Its a must because as it leaks it drips directly on to the alternator. Just finished mine last weekend. 170 dollars with the core. Installed in about 4 hours. Quoted over 1k thru dealer. Get a new serpintine belt while your in there and check for play on the tensioner.

I’ve had 8 Lexus, all V8’s and I can confirm they are brilliant on fuel. My first 95 LS400 got 8.2 L/100 on a trip from Sydney to Adelaide.
My later 98 LS400 got 9.2 L/100 on the same trip. I average 10.9-11.9 in the City from my two 98 LS 400’s over a five year period , it increases about one to two litres in Summer with the A/C flat out. My two LS 430’s were about 1-2 litres heavier. My LS 460 about the same as the 430’s.
Out of all the cars I rate the 400’s as the very best of the lot. The 460 was soooo much faster, but bigger, heavier and more complicated. The 430’s while beautifully built, quiet and quick were not up to the level of the 400’s which I believe are built better, and better to drive, much better handling and more manoeuvrable plus are more comfortable. I’ve also had a couple of SC430’s one of which I still have - a six speed which can’t be compared as are different car to the LS. My opinion is that you simply cannot go past any of these cars, they have been SOOOOO reliable, having had practically nil issues with any of the 400’s in particular. A good comparison is my 400 with 200,000 kms which I had when I purchased the same car with 45,000 kms, the higher Kay car drove practically the same as the lower Kay one - unbelievable. Just buy the best one you can and look after it and I you are away. Another incredible thing..... I’ve never lost any money on any of them when I sold them, in fact I think that the 400’s and SC430’s have actually increased in value over the last five years.

Truth, I've had 1993 LS400, 1995 SC400, 2010 LS460. I would say 1993 LS400 was the best one. LS460 is faster and heavier but I don't feeling so happy on driving it.
i have a 99 ls-400 same color.180,000 runs like new Nakamichi stereo, 27-18 mpg on premium gas. Can easily cruise at highway speeds well over 100 mph. IMO the greatest stock luxury production car ever made.

That seems pretty high actually, even higher than our 7 Series. Depends on how you drive it though, if it's mostly city over highway then it makes sense.
The E38 is definitely not idea for super hot climates. I've always been worried about mine even here, the radiators don't seem to be that strong and I've been concerned about it failing. There aren't many LS 400s for sale here either, we'll be covering that a bit on Friday with our Showdown episode on this LS 400 and our 740iL.
In mixed suburban driving, I get exactly 20 mpg most of the year (without AC). In very cold weather it drops to 19.2 to 19.4 because these really run rich until normal operating temp. is reached. With expressway driving at a steady 65 mph, flat terrain, etc., the best I've gotten is about 35 mpg. Without being really careful, the more usual is about 30.

The PS pump is actually above the alternator, as I recall. Yes, the pump can leak and it's usually due to the front seal weakening. It happened on mine many years ago. Adding some Lucas PS pump sealer stopped the leak completely.
A few others have mentioned that, we misread a post when doing our research about the common problems.
I had a black LS400 here in the UK with an lpg conversion, I bought it expecting really nothing at all as it was super cheap and it was straight after ownership of a 750iL E38.. and my god, one of the best cars I’ve ever had. The kickdown was insane, seriously fast for a car of its size. The sound is amazing, the comfort is second to none. What a car

First of THANK YOU for this video, it just gave me more motivation and inspiration to get my 98 LS400 to look clean again. Currently has minor exterior cosmetics that needs to be taken care of and timing belt to be done in about a month. Sitting on 216,000 km and still drives like new, regardless, wonderful review on the LS400!

I've had a '98 for 19+ years. Without a doubt, the last generation of the LS400 was (is) the best passenger car of the modern era. I've owned M-Bs (NEVER again) and other brands. Friends and neighbors have had everything from Fords to Range Rovers and Bentleys. Most have now switched to Lexus and are very happy they did. I avoid the dealerships, of course, and do routine maintenance like oil/filter changes myself. After all these years, I still smile each time I slide behind the wheel of this remarkable piece of Japanese engineering and construction.
If you can find a good example of the LS400 or LS430, just buy it. You'll never regret the decision.

Don't make like this anymore, I sold my 97 coach edition back in 2010 and have been kicking my self in the nuts ever since. Quite frankly the best quality car I have ever owned, and that's with 225k miles at the time, everything was tight and the engine was incredible

I haven't had an LS since I last sold my 2005. I also had a 93, and a 99. I just bought a 2000 Platinum Series LS with 67k miles, 2 owners, and 30 pages of service history, all done at Lexus. I can't wait for it to be delivered! I'll probably never get rid of it.

I was lucky. My mechanic called me about a car. All maintenance records, garaged, beautiful condition, original owner, 150K miles. Had one day to decide. Looked up everything. Gave him $5200 cash, spent $1200 on new wheels and tires. Been a wonderful 6 months and every time I jump in, I know it was an excellent choice.

I had a 98 with 170k that was a fantastic car. It was very quiet and looked like new. The only negatives I can recall were that the speedo read fast by about 4 mph which is a known issue, and the digital display for the climate control and clock were getting weak. Mine had the factory navigation that only knew the major cities in the US, and by the time I owned it in 2013 was hopelessly out of date. Still, I have fond memories of it as my first Lexus. One day I test drove a used LS460 and the difference was night and day. I had to get the 460 and kept it for many years.
Very nice! The speedometer is probably designed like that, as our E38 BMW 7 Series has the same sort of display, making it seem like you're driving faster than you actually are. We've been told that it's designed this way to prevent speeding, so people will think they're going faster than they actually are.

My work van newer nissan nav sucks, i use my smart phone and never been wrong once in 5 yrs, google maps finds even out of the way holes in the wall in rural areas.
speed o was for your protection it is easy to be going 85 in 70 and not notice car was so smooth.
I own a 2000 LS 400 Platinum Edition V-8 less than 140K miles currently. I can attest it will get 29-30 mpg on southern california highways and rolling hills. It'll easily drop less than 20 mpg as low as 16.5 mpg sometimes stop and go traffic around town. It's hard to believe this V-8 engine gets that kind of fuel economy on the highway but it can and does.
Highway driving is where these cars shine both in terms of comfort and fuel economy.

Purchased a 2000 ls400 a few months ago has 187k miles. I went to Lexus owners website and looked up the vehicle by vin # and found extensive dealer maintenance including timing belt twice. I love driving it .

Glad you were finally able to get this out. Just a few things I wanted to add, the starter WILL go bad. It is 100% certain. It is also very difficult to get to. Mechanic will charge 5 hours labor. Otherwise from a mechanical standpoint the engine and transmission on this car are really amazing. Extremely reliable. If you do buy an LS you will spend a lot of money of suspension upkeep as many parts wear out. I was a little surprised about how much money I have had to put in my LS mainly due to suspension upkeep.
Good to know, thanks! We'd love to find an LS 400 with the air ride suspension to see how it compares, but also to find out what the actual maintenance cost differences would be. I know with the BMW community common problems can often be overblown, so I'm wondering if it might be the same with the air suspension with the Lexus, in that a small number of complaints ends up becoming the norm.
I heard the air suspension was a nightmare and expensive hence why it is recommended to stay away at this age. I wonder if this model you tested had any upgraded or replaced suspension components. The bushings wear out in the strut rods (every LS has this issue within 100k miles), it creates a very loud clunk over bumps. Shocks go bad too. This car feels very boaty and wanders when the suspension gets old. Otherwise the handling is a lot better than most people assume, not like a 7 Series but still planted.
Anyway, when can we expect an LS430 review? While it is a considerable improvement over the LS400, the LS400 still looks better.
I've had my '98 for almost 20 years. Fortunately it has the standard strut suspension. None of the soft rubber bushings have been replaced yet but one did squeak requiring a spray with rubber-safe silicone. I"m told that AT-205 works well for this, too. The body bushing for the front sway bar is a little worn as well, but it's a pretty simply DIY repair and might use polyurethane for that one.
The starter replacement will be very time-consuming some day...but not yet.
I love this masterpiece of Japanese engineering, design and QUALITY CONTROL.

I have a 94 UCF10 and I can attest to the spongy, nautical feel of steering. I can also attest to the car being the most comfortable and reliable landboat that I've ever owned. Fun fact: when the alarm is fully armed (the car has a 30-second "pre-arming" stage after alarming before it's ARMED-armed), you can pull the driver side door handle (as if you're trying to open the door) and the front interior dome light and the keyring lights will all go on for a moment. It's the small attention to detail that makes it worth it: aside from the keyring light, the front seat belt buckles have lights as well. You also have the exterior handle keyhole light. Literally lights everywhere. LOVE my LS. She's big and steers like a drunk donkey, but it's like riding a sofa on a hovercraft.
That's really cool! We're definitely going to have to find a first generation LS to film all of those lights. It's a little harder in the daytime, but we'll definitely make a note of it when we get the chance to.

I don't know whether this will help your perception of the steering feel but I had a leak in the front seal of my PS pump and added some Lucas PS pump sealer. That worked well and had the added benefit of changing the feel of the steering.
I really liked the new, somewhat stiffer handling. Maybe you would, too.

I have waited for the LS400 review forever! I'm thinking about getting one of these for my next car, but an E38 is also very tempting. Is there any plans for a BMW E34 review? Would be fun to see your thoughts on my current car :)
We've had some requests for the E34 recently, and I believe we've placed it in the top 10 on perpetualradio.ca of cars we're looking for. We don't see many of them on the road, we met a few owners last year at the BMW Car Club of Canada's Hamilton meet up, but they weren't overly interested in having their cars featured. We're hoping to make that happen in the new year though!
If you can find a good LS400 or 430, just buy it. You won't have a moment's regret.
Finding one is the issue really. I live in Sweden where these are pretty rare because most people who bought a new luxury car in the 90's either bought an Audi A8 D2, BMW 7-series E38 or Mercedes S-class W140. I really want one but the interior looks kinda boring compared to the E38 that is my other option, but maybe the better reliability would make the LS the better choice. I guess a 430 would be even better, but they aren't as good looking exterior wise imo, and are still very expensive unlike the few 400's that pop up from time to time. Seeing PRN do a Testdrive Showdown between the LS400 and E38 would be great! Maybe even throw in a W140 for good measure too?
Congratulations for living in Sweden. You're very fortunate in so many ways. When I pass drivers of the cars you mentioned, I just shake my head and chuckle. As P.T. Barnum said so long ago, "There's a sucker born every minute." Owning M-B's was, indeed, more exciting because I never knew whether the cars were going to leave me stranded again or when the next thing was going to break.
I've seen a tiny sunvisor above the rearview mirror in my dad's 2001 Audi TT.
Good to know! I think they were more common on the luxury cars at the time, but really we don't see them anywhere today.
I've had my '98 for 21 years of perfection. ALL of the Germans are absolute junk by comparison. Strangers still ask whether it might be for sale....NEVER.. Don't let dealer "service" near it, if you're lucky enough to have one. Do as little to it as possible; you can't make it "better".

3:15 I'm pretty sure Lexus was one of the few brands, if not the only one, making a vent in that spot in 1999...those were all but gone by the 80's.
Oh yeah, the crotch vent! Very few exist, but it's a feature that should be produced today.
I got a 1998 ls400 for $1500 super clean and clean title only leaked problem on the main seal I replaced it only cost $30. No more leak. Plus I have two low mileage engine and transmission at 104k miles and 171k miles😂. So I will drive this car forever.....

MERCEDESBENZS600 S500 .yes it has air suspension it rides smooth but I got extra regular shocks where I got the low mileage engine. I have a lot of extra parts. To be honest this car is easy to fix easier than my Corolla.
People don’t know how easy these are to work on, they aren’t that complicated and almost everything is easy to get to. And most of the parts are cheap. I converted my air suspension to standard and converted my touch screen to a modern stereo and manual HVAC controls, all of the information is out there.
I would be honored to possess the original example that challenged the status quo of luxury cars. This vehicle delivered fit to finish smoothness that successfully blended the elegance of Mercedes and the performance of BMW. Even though Infiniti rolled the pinball along the trunklines and doors in its commercials, Lexus could balance champagne glasses on its running engine. I think I’d try that too : )
I have a '98 LS400.. 350,000km.. had it 12 years... best car I've ever owned.. lots of mods... 10% better fuel economy by getting rid of the engine fan and fitting electric fan... Nothing has ever gone wrong with it.....

@@PRNTestDrive The only design flaw I can pick is the drinks holder... it's not seep enough... I had a full 600ml bottle of Coke in it and hit the brakes one day.. the bottle flew forward and sprayed Coke all over the sound system head and ruined it... however in replacing it with a bluetooth Pioneer I can now listen to my iphone music & phone... Mind you, the Pioneer is UGLY and spoils the whole look of the dash... :( (I wanted to replace it with another original one but I had to run music from my phone thru this cassette thing with a wire attached and the sound quality was only average. And yes, I'm 60 and quite confident this car will see me out !
Another car with a sun visor above the rear view mirror is the Audi A4 B5 model. Its a great idea worked well on the Audi not sure why it never continued on later models. Likewise with Lexus.
Good to know! I wonder how many older cars would have had this feature. I guess they stopped doing it more recently since most cars have sensors in front of the mirror and typically have the dotted pattern around it which helps block out some glare. Also I'd imagine they break easily. I know on the Acura Vigor it felt pretty solid, but the smaller hinge on this Lexus could easily break.

I searched for some time and couldn't find a good one at a reasonable price. Too many of these LS400s have been ratted out by the local teen ricer scene and the remaining good ones are being posted for $8,000 sometimes. The closest I found was a low-mileage Acura RL listed at $4200 that sold very quickly. I ended up getting a beat ass 2010 Crown Vic P7B that already needs a trans (junkyard warranty) a week after purchase. I do own one Toyota product - a 2003 MR2 Spyder and it has been steadfast reliable and a blast to drive in my first year of ownership. I'd sell the Crown Vic and daily the MR2 before I'd do the opposite. I nearly got a 2002 Sequoia with only 150k miles for the blazing low price of $3800 but it had obviously been flipped on its side and repaired enough to be driven. Somebody bought it about 2 hours after I said I'd pass. Boy that thing was nasty inside and the steering was way fucked up but the drivetrain felt like it was brand new. That's certainly true. The reality is this car isn't 'quick' by today's standards, but in the 90s it was plenty fast. Other luxury cars didn't start focusing on full-size performance until the early 2000s.

We do try our best to get the top trim models, but it's always difficult tracking down willing owners. New cars we have an easier time since the manufacturers often provide journalists with the best options. We'll definitely see what we can do though!
Everting I’ve heard is good, I’m going to replace my LS400 with one of the later ones with the 6 speed. Bigger trunk, more aerodynamic. Going to try to find one without the touch screen and standard suspension, just like my LS400.

Only one thing I don’t like, the trunk is too small for a family because of the fuel tank location. I’m going to “upgrade” to an LS430 for this reason. 6 speeds and better aerodynamics will be nice as well. Hopefully the reliability is just as good.

Thanks to your video I discovered the Lexus LS400 party trick of opening all the windows with the key fob! Very cool. I doubt I'd ever need all the windows open at once but still a neat trick. I have a 98 with 271,500 miles (not sure what that is in km) and it's still going strong. All the luxury features still work great. Love this car! By the way, would the windows also come down if you put the key in the door and held it in the unlock position?
Glad to hear you're doing well with your LS! I think the windows should open via the door key hole, at least on BMWs they work that way so I'd have to imagine the same for this.

We think so too! It's one of the most interesting one's we've filmed so far.
Running components may be much improved wrt reliability but the miles still show as interior and exterior wear.
Exterior needs some love, but the interior was in pretty good shape overall, nothing was broken and there weren't any rips or tears in the seats. Even the leather hadn't worn out in high-traffic area places like our 7 Series was at the same milage when we bought it.
I love the crotch cooler vent under the steering wheel.

Beige might not win over any hearts, but in black this car would look great, just like the E38 and W220. We love all 3 cars, but a silver W220 or E38 look boring in our opinion, but it's hard to go wrong with black!
Mine was blue. I got rid of the two tone and put in a simple lip kit and it looks phenomenal. Love the headlight design on these.

That's what we were told by the owner, however we've decided to stop reporting fuel economy numbers on these classic episodes unless we can do our own independent testing.

I'd go for the facelift personally, the design changes are pretty subtle, but do give it a slightly more modern look. Though both still look great today in our opinion, so you can't really go wrong either way!

Probably would since it's newer. We'd have to compare them side to side to know for sure.
For some reason I though the HP was 260ish and the TQ 365ish? Here they’re listed @ 290hp / 300tq.
The power numbers we listed came from the manufacturer. Sometimes we find the year & market the vehicle was sold in can vary those numbers. We see it often with the luxury cars.
My 1996 ls400 was 298 bhp, and rapid, so saying it's not fast is bogus
Not fast by today's full-size luxury car standards, but for the time it was certainly quick. We're sorry if we made it seem like we felt it wasn't quick during our drive of the car.

This one was an aftermarket screen the owner put in. Unfortunately there's no navigation on this one, but we did feature the succeeding generation LS 430 which did have navigation optional from the factory.

The S 600 would be the better car on both points. Leg room in the back of the Lexus is decent for a full-size sedan, but hard to compete with any of the long wheelbase models like Mercedes was producing. The ride quality on either was quite soft which we like, but the Mercedes definitely felt better. We've noted that the 3 different generations of S-Class we've driven all have similar superb road feel, something that helps make the S-Class stand out against the competition.

Definitely! Those Lexus models are pretty darn reliable, if you're looking for a comfortable, reliable daily driver, that's easily something we'd recommend.
I have this car with 210k miles. It's an amazing car but be honest with yourself: it's 20 year old car. Your power steering will leak on alternator and it will fail. Front lower control arms are weak and need to be replaced more often than usual otherwise you will get not-so-lexusy knocking in suspension. Starter will fail and replacing it is a BITCH. Trust me, i've done it 2 months ago.
Any car will require maintenance, especially at this age. But the trade off is having a seriously good ride for a fraction of what a new one would cost today. Hold onto yours if you can! I think we'll start to see interest in these increase.

Hope you can make it happen Lebron! Definitely try and get the full service history for the vehicle, often we find these cars are still owned by the original owner and getting that information can be key when figuring out what type of maintenance its going to need down the road.

Not being able to drive it is certainly a negative, but that’s also the direction the industry seems to be moving in anyway. Honestly when I was researching these cars I didn’t find anything aside from the regular maintenance that comes up, there’s not really any major concerns or red flags. Does this dealership offer some sort of return policy? If it does that would definitely help you out in case there’s something really wrong with it.

Why do you say that? Unless there is something clearly fatal about it, do the usual maintenance and it should last MUCH longer.
wholeNwon transmission is starting to slip, replaced starter, alternator. Just coming to an end
Starters do go after a while. Unfortunately the LS starter is hard to get to, as you know. The alternator sits under the PS pump and the front seals occasionally leak onto the alternator. They are hard on batteries and people sometimes jump start them and run the cars on really dead batteries or "test" them by disconnecting the battery while the engine is running and ruin the alt. Has the trans. been serviced correctly and only Toyota ATF used? Did someone flush it (bad)? Unless abused, I'd have expected it to have lasted a LOT longer. If it has the right fluid, you could try draining out a qt. and replacing that with Lucas ATF treatment. It's surprising how often that helps slipping. It's one of the really great cars in the world and a shame to see it "die".
wholeNwon i can’t speak for the first owner but my father drove it smooth and did all the servicing himself. As for me let’s just say I’m not as gentle, nothing serious but I do like to use the ect mode for the transmission.

Fast compared to something like a modern Lexus LS. sub-300hp on a full-size luxury car is pretty low by today's standards.

It certainly should be! These are incredible vehicles that continue to serve owners well into the high mileage club. As long as you have the vehicle inspected first by a trusted mechanic you should be good!

I have a 99 and Im trying to figure out, when Im at a light sitting it makes a slight grinding noise. Is it the transmission or the braking system?
If you're slowing down it could be the brakes, but if you're not moving and it's making a grinding sound I'd suspect the transmission.

8L/100km? I will believe it when I see it. My 1.6 mazda consumes over 9 and my A6 Avant quattro with a 2.4 V6 is like 12/100km.
Our 7 Series averages 11.1L/100km, but we've gotten it down to the 9.0L mark by doing all-highway driving.
interesting. Know a guy who had a E38 with the 4.4 but his was 16-19L/100km but then again you probably follow speed limits and accelerate like a grandma if your V8 consumes 11.1L
My 2014 Mazda3 GT = 7.9L/100km. The best I could get with my 1998 LS400 = 8.9L/100km in highway driving with a feather foot. The mentioned 8L/100km seems incredible.

I work at a dealer the older lexus still rides better than new ones and 100 times more reliable. Cost a portion of new one and really to me looks better has more room and is mor comfortable. As far as options I need nop back up camera mirors work fine I need no infotainment center big screens look lie carp ruin interior lines all I need is cd of choice and gps when I go where I need gps my smartphone and google maps free with phone have taken me to farms in middle of nowhere every time i needed it. Something about the older lexus just tickles my fancy and I do not need the latest greatest, just a car that at 90 mph on a good road needs good cd player to keep me from dozing off as old lexus like sitting in a easy chair but doing 90 mph LOL

I always found this Gen. Lexus to be a very well built and put together car, but compared to the Same Gen. Competitors such as the Mercedes Benz, Audi and BMW…. the Lexus was quite boring ! Could you imagine if Lexus was building cars back then that were just as exciting to drive and look at as the cars I just mentioned plus the quality? O my God, they would have whooped their competitors asses even more!
Very good points! The Lexus has a great ride and feels insanely comfortable to drive, but that's about it. We're working on a Showdown episode with this car right now, I think it's going to be very interesting to see what viewers think when we compare it with something else.

Perhaps but I've owned both M-B's and the LS400. The thrill of M-B is wondering when the car will leave you stranded next or what else will break soon. Yes, mine had expert, by the book maintenance.
So you are saying a IS300 that competes with a BMW 3 Series is not fun to drive? Do realize the SC300/GS300 and IS300 were derived from the Toyota Supra. The JDM version of the GS300 known as the Toyota Aristo that came with a turbo charged 2jz. It was essentially a 4 door supra. The IS-F was one of the first F Marque car launched in 2007 long before the LFA. It competed with the Mercedes AMG and BMW M cars. It had a V-8 engine. Not all Lexus's are boring like many people think if you do a little research.
You know some NEW mini SUVs that we have here in Australia (particularly a Korean one ) take 13.5L per 100km. And greenie idiots call ANYTHING LONG WHEEL BASE as "gas guzzlers". Of course checking the actual MPG isn't the type of thing any rocket scientist greenie would even think of....
That's crazy! I think the only vehicles we've driven this year with a fuel economy that bad have been the Cadillac Escalade, CTS-V, and maybe the Jeep Grand Cherokee. A lot of these older Lexus models are crazy good on fuel, it's too bad they don't classify them properly for you.

Hopefully it’s nothing too serious! The LS is going to be one of the most reliable cars you can buy for the money, but if it wasn’t taken care of before you might be in for more issues. It all depends on service history. Hopefully you get it sorted out!
Perpetual Radio Networks it has 118k on it and seems to have been looked after. It drives really well, but it no longer revs over 4k :/ it only does it hot so I'm hoping it's just a coolant temp sensor...
@@RustedPistons Hello, good chance it may be your ecm/ecu on the inside of your car you have to take your glove box off to get to it. It's a very common issue with earlier lexus / toyota cars especially that gets overlooked when diagnosing by a lot of people. There is a long list of symptoms that happen when capacitors start failing inside your ecm. The good news is if you are handy and can get it out of there which isn't terribly difficult, you can order the proper capacitors very affordably and bring the ecm to say someone who is tech savvy and repairs circuit boards for a living like a computer repair person. The capacitors themselves will cost you less than 20 dollars ordering them, you just have to find the right person that can remove the old ones and put the new ones in, easy to do if you are experienced with a soldering iron or find someone who is.
Here is a list of symptoms of failing ecm capacitors on earlier lexus / toyota cars;
● problems in getting into diagnostic mode or scanner says "no communication"
● random dropping into "limp home" mode
● weird shifting problems
● OBD port is unresponsive, seems dead
● throwing random fault codes
● engine won't rev out/rev limits at 2000 or less rpm
● engine runs like crap, then suddenly runs fine again
● random not starting or cutting out
● low idle or erratic idle
● often very hard to start, requires starting fluid
● transmission will not automatically shift, only manual shift is possible
● transmission jerks from 1st to 2nd gear, and kinda slips from 2nd to 3rd
● no A/C compressor operation
● idle speed rolling up and down, or sometimes too low and sometimes too high
● speedometer not working reliably
● speed (cruise) control not working
● tachometer not working sometimes
● air bag light flickering intermittently
● A/C going into reset with flashing front defog light (front defog light typically flashing 10 times)
● check engine light on sometimes, but no codes stored, often in concert with ECT light
● ECU not communicating with scanners or not displaying codes with jumper installed
● bad sulfur exhaust smell in concert with not running right above

@@moonshinefuel thanks mate - it's been fine for a year or so now. I think the previous owner tootled it about town and never exercised the VVT. I changed the oil and gave it some motorway blasts over a week or so and it loosened up and has been sweet since. I love the car so much - normally sell them by now but this one is staying put!

We featured the LS 430 a couple years after we did this one and found that there's not much to go wrong on that one either.

That suspension was a experiment by bose. Never fitted to any production car.
That's true, and it was also the first generation LS they tested it on. Really awesome technology, but likely expensive to produce in a production vehicle.

Very few of them did, it was an option from Lexus but after going through a number of the enthusiast forums we've found that a very small number of them ever optioned it, so finding one might be difficult.

You don’t want it. I replaced mine myself when the one of four air struts failed. Fortunately I was able to sell the other parts to offset the cost of stock springs and Bilsteins. Now it rides almost as well as before, handles better, and won’t break again.

Thought it is a '96, but you may be right. Trans. was rebuilt at something like 720 k. My guess is that it wasn't well-maintained!

Which S class? The W220 and W211 had the early airmatic that does develop leaks that are hard to find but the W221 was really sound and airmatic issues are rare.

You should check out Mercedessource, its a great channel. In his videos about the W220 he talks about the possible and common leaks as well as parts and prices.
Those expensive shocks can usually be rebuilt and dont fail *that* often. A well maintained W220 is not very expensive to run really, just dont buy the cheapest one.
It's hard to say for sure without owning both, but we imagine they suffered the same type of issues like Joe Barbaro mentioned. It seems that fewer LS 400s were equipped with air ride making them hard to find, so parts would also likely be harder to acquire.
Zack Salvatore mine is air suspension but I have oem shocks I can switch when the air suspension goes bad...

For sure, Lexus didn't exist until the early 90s while BMW and Mercedes had been pumping out cars for decades. The Lexus might not have sold as much earlier on, but they're definitely killing it with sales today, and not to mention this second generation LS 400 was also incredibly popular with buyers.
Lexus gives people like me who DIY everything exactly what we wanted: cheap used luxury cars that aren’t total money pits. That wasn’t a thing before Lexus.
