    I learned this method 47 years ago from a ten year old Vietnamese Boy who caught the Rats to help provide "Dinner" for his Village. The Jungle Rats were so BIG you had to use a 50 Drum. You didn't see any Cows running around and shooting a Water Buffalo got you Executed.

    A couple of things to make your trap more effective. 1st put the wood ramps at the ENDs of the bottle. You want it to be easy for the rats to get on the bottle. Also just put the peanut butter around the middle (an inch or two wide), this will draw the rats on the to bottle

      The mice can walk the edge of the bucket. Then they have to reach for the can with a less sure footing. I've seen our mice get in the bucket without a ramp.

  • @alan30189
    @alan30189 10 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    You don't want to put the peanut butter that close to the edge of the bottle!! You are wasting peanut butter and that gives the rat traction when he is climbing out. Jut put a 1" to 2" strip maximum on the center of the bottle. The idea is to get the rats to climb out over the tube to the middle and then if they shift their weight either way, they fall in.

Then I moved onto old fashioned traps and that barely worked because those little brats are smarter than I knew. I really hope this works. Because, I am freaked I killed like six or seven so far with the traps, when I thought I only had one!! I am so freaked. Thanks

      You probably had the wire too tight preventing rotation of the bottle or too small of a bucket and the stretched across while stabilizing themselves by their back legs firmly planted on the ramp or bucket.

    • @robertmayer7232
      @robertmayer7232 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree with D. Geo. 5 gallon bucket is good for mice, but for rats I plan to use a larger bucket, like a small plastic trash bin. Not a full garbage can size but like a kitchen trash bin size so it's deeper and wider than a 5-gallon bucket. Also, I'll make the spindle using something thinner like a pipe, rather than a wide plastic bottle so the rat can't just lean over from the edge of the bin. Lastly, I'll put the peanut butter bait in the middle of the spindle so the rat has to venture out on the spindle to get to it. If it's all the way out to the edge of the spindle then they'll just eat it while safe from the rim.
      Rats are not like mice. Mice are adventurous, curious and explore. Rats are not. They don't like anything new. They would be motivated only by hunger and are wary of anything risky. Some say the best rat trapping strategy is to put a "safe" trap out first so they get familiar with it in their area. Perhaps at first with the spindle fixed so it doesn't rotate. Let them get to the peanut butter successfully. Then after a week or so, after the rats build trust with it, then allow it to spin. For mice trapping you wouldn't need to do this.
      Another variation is to put the spindle not at the top but like 3/4 of the way to the top, and cut a hole in the side of the bucket right above the end of the spindle, and put a cover over the top. This way the rats can't try to pick at the bait from the safety of the rim - they are forced to go through the hole in the side and out onto the spindle.

    Thanks for posting, I'm trying it tonight. I had used a bucket with bait in the bottom; the first somehow jumped out, the second & third pushed props in the bucket to help them jump out! I'm not one to kill unnecessarily but it's coming down to them or my sanity... going with about 2 gallons of water in the bucket with the design you're showing.
    Again, thanks. A small portion of my sanity has been restored.

  • @vimanapilot6170
    @vimanapilot6170 9 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    You spread the peanut butter too close to the edge, a rat could keep his hind legs on the rim of the bucket and just eat the peanut butter, you have to put a thin strip of it around the center of the bottle so they have to walk on it to get to the peanut butter, this may work for mice, but not rats.

    Peter I just heard "Rocket stove" and just want to help you. You need taller bucket and without the water. Get as many rats as possible in there and let them kill and eat each others till the last one. And release that last surviving rat. That rat now would not eat anything else except other rats preferably young in the nests when parents are away looking for food. They'll comeback to dead eaten babies and seek revenges on innocent rats and the massacre will continue on perpetuating itself.

    I used wooden broom handel (or a thick wooden dowel) cut to size, and pushed nails into the ends of the dowel/handle, making sure that it rotated easily. in one case, I partly burried it into the garden, and in the house, I provided a ramp for the mice to reach to top of the bucket/bin. With peanut butter smeared in the middle, it worked better than I expected.

    Your trap looks like a good idea. How well did it do? I had a rat problem and tried about every type of trap available. The problem is, rats are smart and their quick learners. You may hatch one or two in a particular trap but then the rats seem to put the word out and stop getting caught. I won't use poison because it's bad for the environment. I ended up buying an electric trap from the Victor Co. And have had great success with it. It uses batteries and notifies you of a catch by a blinking light. Disposal is clean and simple too. I like that it's safe around kids and pets. A well spent $50.00

      +Abdulai Bah I don't like to kill things unnecessarily, but it is necessary to kill the rats living in my carport bc the rats are too big to go into my live traps that I wasted a bunch of money on. My original plan was to catch a bunch of live rats and let them out in a bank that screwed me over. I thought that the rats would be happy there with the other dirty rats. I built this bucket trap, but so far, the rats have just eaten the pb. Gonna have to go with the tried, tested and true snap traps.

    To entice them a little more smear some peanut butter on the approach ramps. The final touch is to put some liquid soap in the water. This insures the side of the bucket can't be climbed up. If you put some cooking oil or something, just about an inch or so, in the bottom of it, it will make it too slick for mice or rats to try to jump out of it. Most can swim for long periods of time, and most mice and rats can jump amazingly high. Also, if you put a bit of water or other liquid, not too much, in the bottle, it will keep lighter critters (small mice) from managing to not spin the bottle. (I said "spin the bottle... *giggle*) This is a great trap! Thanks!

    You had asked me if it worked back in Feb 2013.
    No. They were too big or had too good of balance, the peanut butter was eaten every time with no catch. Fortunately I did some serious meditation & willful intention... amazingly I haven't had any signs of mice or rats since.
    Call it a miracle, fate, luck, whatever... I'm ecstatically grateful...
    Still an awesome video though thanks for the follow up.

    put enough water to ensure no foot holds and then spray all surfaces inside the trap (not the wire and spinner parts) with Pam or something to that effect so everything is slippery and it really helps if you have a taller bucket

    So how many rats did it catch ? Somebody has already mentioned how high rats can jump and they were right. I think a rat would get out of there in a flash even if it had water in it. So i hope you will let us know if this is worth making or not. I been using an old bought humane rat trap for years and caught quite a few but i am talking of a period of years.I catch the odd one or two a months say. Rats are imo very hard to trap.I have killed far more by shooting them with an air rifle than any trap.Poison works well also but each method has its own problems.

    • @sherlockinsomniac
      @sherlockinsomniac 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      No it can't jump out of it if the water is deep enough. The same way a person cant just jump out of a pool. Not even if you're an NBA player.

    • @MickyMoz
      @MickyMoz 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      sherlockinsomniac Well how many rats did you catch ? Be honest now. I doubt if many nba players are capable of jumping more than 10x their height. That bin isn't deep enough and rats are not easy to trap in any kind of trap.

    • @sherlockinsomniac
      @sherlockinsomniac 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MickyMoz You're missing the point. Even if you could jump 100X your height, you would still need solid ground to push off from. It's physically impossible for any land creature to jump while treading water. My testimony is irrelevant since there is no way for me to prove to you the effectiveness of my trap, but if you must know, I caught and drowned 4 rats the first day but it has decreased since then. Now I get one every week or so. I do encourage you to watch other vids of traps like this that have water in them. The rats just keep swimming until they get tired and drown. The water would only need to be a little higher than the maximum height of the rat to prevent it from jumping.

    • @MickyMoz
      @MickyMoz 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes i do understand the physic's behind the trap. I just don't think that the bucket is deep enough to be effective .And i doubt that adult rat's would fall for it. Baby rats maybe as they are pretty dumb. I also wonder why you didn't include the results in your video considering it was so effective overnight. ;0)

    • @sherlockinsomniac
      @sherlockinsomniac 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      MickyMoz This isn't my video. And I used a bigger bucket. I also used a cut up PVC pipe instead of a bottle. But it's basically the same as this. Check this video Eimerfalle für Mäuse * Bucket trap * it's much more crude version of this but is just as effective.

    if you want to make holes in the bucket and bottle, there are a lot easier ways than that crank bit.
    Just hold a sharp piece of thin metal (like a screw driver for instance,) in the flame of a lit cigarette lighter for about 15 seconds, and then you can just push it through the plastic, melts through with ease. then twist it a few times to make the hole as round and smooth as you want.

    When you get sick of trying, get a schiperkee or rat terrier, both very small dogs and nice personality. It is their passion to shake the snot out of rats. But, be sure to give them a break (put them away) or they may wear themselves out. Have water and dog food, too. They don't eat the rats. And tell them good job, when they bring you one (partly alive probably, but they will kill it). They can go in small places and fight. They are legit.

    • @alexarockwood8057
      @alexarockwood8057 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just because something has adapted to live in a city doesn’t mean that the animal is vermin. Rags do carry diseases sometimes, but so do armadillos, cats, dogs, even humans. There are just a lot more rats so it seems like they are pests.

      It DOES work and is one of the most effective mouse/rat traps ever devised. I've been using this type of trap all my adult life and I am 57. But he is wrong when he says that water is "optional", because even small mice can jump out of this size bucket without enough water in it to make them buoyant. If you're trapping large rats then you must fill the bucket to nearly half full or they can get back out easily. They must be buoyant enough that they can't use their extremely powerful hind leg muscles to leap out. Mice and rats can jump great distances.
      Please do not use anti freeze in place of water as some suggest because cats and dogs love the taste of anti-freeze and they will die a slow miserable death when they drink it.

    You should install the drum lower into the bucket to force the rats to lean forward and shift their weight onto the drum. Otherwise, they will stand on the edge of the bucket and lick the peanut butter.
