    Notes by Eric Byler | This is an excerpt from Rev. Dr. William Barber's speech at Binkley Baptist Church in Durham, NC on June 30, 2013 - four days after the Supreme Court struck down a key provision of The Voting Rights Act of 1965.
    Our web series did not release this footage until now because this event was likely to be included in our upcoming feature length documentary. But this speech, out of many that we have filmed, best encapsulates Rev. Barber's religious and moral convictions. A different excerpt has be licensed to UpWorthy's new TH-cam channel.
    After filming the speech Rev. Barber gave in Virginia, I came home and wrote about a topic I had ignored for many years, religion:
    There is beauty in today's movement to reclaim Christianity from the talons of oligarchy and oppression.
    Yesterday I spent most of the day in a church where the man you see here gave a sermon in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Afterwards, another pastor sang a song that went "They will know we are Christian by our love." I was surprised to realize that those words actually made sense, and even resonated with me for the first time.
    Truth be told, I am not a believer in this religion or any religion, but it is a blessing for me, I must admit, to at last be able to look upon the Christian faith with deep respect and warm regard.
    It's such a huge part of American history - those who have fought and are fighting to protect its integrity are doing a service not just to their faith but to their country.
    Story of America's Annabel Park and Eric Byler will be documenting the Moral March on Raleigh on Sat. Feb. 8, 2013, at which Rev. Barber is traditionally the keynote speaker.

    I was raised as a Southern Baptist and observing the way christianity has treated me and others convinced me there is no god. I am still an atheist but this man is good and if this had been the christianity of my life experience I may have never questioned my faith.

      Charlotte Henry I have been through that same fire, but I believe that Satan is the god of this world, that religion is his chief weapon, and that the knowledge of God is scarce in the earth. what would it take for your trauma and disgust at the wickedness of Christianity to propel you beyond the empty religion you learned, and get to know the god of Love, Justice and Wrath?

      I also was raised in a Southern Baptist Church, and it was a strict way of life according to my grandparents who kept me under submission to the point of having me baptised. But I never forgot the teachings. I was introduced to Christ at a young age and I admired Him weather He was real or not but with all the religions in this world, He gets distorted and with some of these get rich preachers, I let the church. It's easy to see why our youth fall from the church as well.

With that being said, do you have plans in visiting Atlanta Ga. anytime soon??? I will look forward in welcoming you into this city to bring the morality and hope of justice to all people including me! Thank you for continuing the legacy of Dr. King to carry out this great and powerful assignment!!! AMEN🙏!!!

    This is 10 years old and still as relevant as anytime in history! Beautiful, powerful, compassionate words by a man who has clearly lived through the same situations he is working to improve. I’ll be doing what I can to support his work and ensure that we have a voice that is heard. Not on a basis of religion but in a basis of humanity.

    Most likely I'm not the first viewer of this beautiful, compelling, stirring address by Rev. Dr. William Barber to point out to you that my church, Binkley Baptist Church, is in Chapel Hill, NC, rather than in Durham (as stated in the note). Thank you, though, for posting this!

    Notice how the camera focuses on the "many" White people in the audience, as if to emphasize his appeal? He's a smart man, and a great speaker.
    However, my question to Rev Barber is this -- What's being done in the urban Black community? Why don't I hear anything productive from the NAACP or anyone honestly, addressing what's REALLY keeping African Americans back? I'm speaking of drugs, gangs, guns, violence, single parent homes, poverty. Last I checked, I've never seen Rev Barber driving through gang infested areas of Durham preaching or even reaching out. I think Rev Barber is one of those big talkers, but only acts when he has his "posse" surrounding him. No wonder he's been laughed at on the national stage.

    • @leahcim3360
      @leahcim3360 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Dr Barber is doing the productive things he does from "WITHIN THE NAACP".
      And, it's no secret what's "Really keeping African Americans back."
      It's called systemic and structural racism woven into the historic and present fiber of American
      society.
      And, Dr barber is decidedly NOT "being laughed at on the national stage" (a stage where you yourself don't have a seat) -- except perhaps by Fools, for example, fools who think that their own bigoted opinion of Dr Barber matters to even ONE other soul on the planet. It doesn't.
      The vacuous tripe you've written here Common Bubba rells to us preciesly nothing about Dr. William Barber and much about you -- and your own pettiness, the pettiness of a very small & unknown life.

    • @jeannedalbret

      Common Sensy, I believe he is addressing all of us and thank God for him.
      I don't know where you live, but surely you could answer the question "what is being done in the urban Black community?" without Dr. Barber's help. If you happen to live an isolated life, there are many excellent books and documentaries that can help you to understand a little better. I can suggest teh Netflix documentary 13th to start. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/13th_(film)
      Best wishes for your research...I am a 62 year-old white woman and only now coming to understand how little I know about our shared history. But I can say I do know more today than last year, and much more than ten years ago.,

      Poverty and inequality can leave behind anyone. It just happens that Blacks were slaves and therefore enter society as poor to begin with that never changed ...one thing is begin the climb from above sea level and another to begin in the bottom of a pit, and furthermore oil is being put on the walls to make sure few climb up. Note the same for the poor and purposedly uneducated white the idea to privatize schools is to make them dumber to be controlled. The use of the literal view of the bible is to block the critical thinking that every human is capable of.

    • @berylinesmith6561
      @berylinesmith6561 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I understand what you're saying about the NAACP. I use to be a member of that organization but I didn't see them stepping up to defend anyone, especially all the killings of young men. It's a genocide against our people and the NAACP hasn't shown up but still they want money, for what?
