I’d like to see a modern Rat-1 design. Similar design with G-10 but a thinner BTE profile but all the robustness that allows it to be such a good user.
Love your videos. I like we and civivi i haven't tried sencut yet. This model looks great. Is there a civivi that you would consider a tough use knife as you mentioned in the video?
Just watched the SENCUT video, and it reminded me of a question I've always wanted ask, if you can answer. In your opinion Which manufacturer produces knives with the sharpest blades out of the box in general? And if it varies by price range or takes you too far down a rabbit hole to answer, just disregard.
Would you consider the Civivi a decent self defense carry? I really like it but the pricetag is wild for not having inset liners and internal stop pins etc, the little details
Depending on which civivi . I own 3 and don't regret any . They get picked regularly for daily carry . But are not my favourite. That's my Kunwu orian . Civivi just make good knives . But your preference of style will dictate which one you would obtain.
In my understanding, the Ontario Rat 1 is just an old knife. In those years, it was popular only because it was relatively inexpensive, of relatively high quality, with a comfortable handle and good blade geometry. Nowadays there are just a lot of knives that will do it in all respects. It’s the same story with CS Recon 1, but at least it still has an indestructible design.
Contrary to what everyone seems to say, I’ve had issues with all four Rats I have owned over the years. My experience is they are finicky and can’t take much abuse without developing problems like lock rock. I’ve only had one that had good snappy action with the thumb studs. It makes me feel like I’m insane when I see so many people referring to them as hard use beater kings lol, I just don’t see it. 🤷♂️ So personally I’ll take any Sencut any day over a Rat. I do understand why people prefer washers for some cases though. But again, in my experience, the Rats aren’t as capable of heavy use as most people seem to claim, so if I’m not getting a hard use knife anyway, I’d prefer one with nice bearing action.
Have a Rat1 and Rat2, and both of them have had significant lock play over about the same period of time. It’s odd too because I never really carried them much if at all, only fidgeting, so the fact that they developed such gnarly lock rock is really quite underwhelming. I did fix them and now they do both lock up tight and solid but I had to push both lock bars over to about 90-95% lock up in order for that to happen, and my detent ball is now mere millimeters away from contacting the show side steel liner when the knife is open. That also made the action worse because now the lock bars pressure against the blade is very high.
I think people tend to conflate “this knife can take abuse” with “I don’t care if this knife gets messed up”. I’ve owned multiple Rats and enjoyed them for a while, but I eventually moved on from them altogether because every one of them became finicky after a while and it didn’t take much.
SBD ArchNemesis It's a full custom and it's one of the most beautiful things you'll ever see. There used to be high end clones on Ali for around $250 in ti/m390, but it's been a couple years since I remember seeing them. But I'd track one down if i wanted a premium material double edged folder. There are a couple other china budget materials double edged folders, but model names are escaping me. I think Ganzo and MTech both did one at one point.
Civivis are just always way too thin. Some models it makes sense as a slicer. Others where its intended to be a hard use work knife, its still very thin tips, no back spacer, same blade stock thickness, etc. No variation depending on design and intended use.
this thing looks like the epitome of boring and soulless, almost gives me depressions staring at it. doesn't matter if it's flickity-flickier, the rat is a well thought out and loved design and this forgettable blob surely ain't gonna replace it.
Absolutely not a rat 1 killer with a 8cr steel. Honestly it can cost 10$ I won't use an 8cr anything steel it's literally like tossing $ in the trash it won't hold an edge without sharpening every day. D2 I can get away with sharpening 2x a week. And in a edc work knife I do not care about washers or berrings if im beating on the knife. And if I do lose it or break it less than 49$ to replace it. Best hard use heavy duty knife I've ever owned.
Nope. The Rat is still a better design. That flipper tab is awful and totally ruins that knife. The Rat-1 is just such an amazing and versatile knife design. This... not so much. IMO the Boker Kihon FS and the Bestechman Ronan are both MUCH better knives.
The Ontario Rat is an OG in the quality budget knife territory and will always have a place in the history of edc cutlery, however too many other companies have created models that could be comparable to the Rat while being superior to it in general. Lets be real, the Rat is thick behind the edge and it's cutting geometry is completely saved by the full flat grind, the scales are a nylon/FRN and not actually G10, the steel liners are thick and have no weight relief milling, and it's got an ancient design shallow carry pocket clip that's painted on and comes far too stiff. There are way better models out there for the money, including this Sencut.
The Rat is in kind of a more modern Buck 110 type category for me. Venerable and forever remembered, but we've come a long way since its heyday. It's ugly. It's too thick and robust to be a good slicer which means it doesn't need the numerous downsides to a belly heavy high tip blade shape, which basically excels at skinning and nothing else.. but it's also not overbuilt enough to be super hard use. It's ugly. It's a C or D grade on every level design and performance wise. Oh... and it's ugly... 😁
Your reviews are getting better or at least more helpful for me than they used to be. Like the content.
Are you able to review the Sencut Glide Strike? I'd love to hear your thoughts on that, and I'm not finding it on your channel.
Their site lists it as GlideStrike: one word.

Keep rocking NN love it all! Take it how you want or don’t take it all 💯👍🏽
Dang it, now im gonna have to grab one up. Great video, as always. Thanks for sharing.

@@davidheath2427 Yeah I've got a bunch, just curious about this specific model. I'm sure it would do fine, I'm just over thinking it as usual
What are those ninja reverse flicks on a full flat grind blade?!
More tests like that! Awesome!

I like the sencut blade but the rat 1 is just built like a tank

Looks cool!
Sencut is 9CR
Working men prefer washers, of course... much easier to clean without extra oils/tools👍
Taiwan does things slightly different but it can be felt
Yes man
😊😊😊
Nice bro
👍🍻

The bots are very friendly.
This could never beat the Rat.
