If you are talking about the standard commercial ancestry DNA tests I would say that generally the answer would be "no". This is because of things like the possibility of the sample being too small or contaminated with DNA etc from other sources. However, there are DNA tests that can be done from other objects and methods which may be more expensive and not guaranteed of a result. This is something that is becoming more common in regards to deceased ancestors. Because one of my friend used this method.. First she swab it to the cheeks of her baby and then used the same swab to take sample from her husband's toothbrush,earwax from the cotton buds that he used, from the mouth of the mineral water which he drunk at and lastly taking sample from her tongue after kissing her husband..what will happen with the sample.?
I am not certain but I think most likely the sample won’t provide any usable result and will be considered a failed test and would need to be redone. I have read that toothpaste from a toothbrush can mask the DNA. So, the test may not detect enough DNA to give a result. If enough DNA is present there’s a good chance it would show it’s from more than one person and not be considered a valid result. Even if a result was obtained it would not be reliable.

I think the DNA testing companies may send out another sample collection kit if they can’t get a valid result but your friend should check with them to confirm this. If your friend hasn’t sent it back yet they may even send out another kit if she tells them she had problems with correctly using the swab and the sample is contaminated. But as I said it’s best to check with the DNA testing company she is using.
