Powell Peralta Dragons: G-Bones 64mm Review

  • I have long been searching for the Cinderella Wheel. As someone who predominantly rides a surfskate, I need a wheel that has enough traction to pump and carve under a lot of torque. But I also love doing skateboard tricks on my surfskate. I am trying to get longer blunt slides, nose slides, tail slides, and a soft longboard or cruiser wheel makes that nearly impossible. The hype around the Dragon formula wheels had me so excited that this could be the wheel that provides the best of all worlds. So watch with me as I review the Powell Peralta Dragon Formula G-Bones from a surfskater perspective to get an idea if this wheel is worth purchasing.
Wide range of Dragon formula wheels available from Status Skate Shop: statusskatesho...
And if you are curious, no I didn't get kicked out of the resort while filming this. I'll have another video coming about the surfing and another video that reviews this hotel as maybe the best find in the world as an all-inclusive resort for surfers.

Great vid Mark, really impressed with how well the wheels rolled over the cobble stone sidewalk. Thought for sure they would jam out and hang up everywhere but they rolled right over everything including the dirt trails...amazing! I'm glad you could generate speed too because I'll be buying these to try in the bowl. I also ride the original G-Bone wheels in blue, I use them in the bowls, I like them. Keep Rippin' it Up Mark!

I have eyeballed them for years, but haven’t meet anyone skating them. I’m not a Bones 🦴 believer. To old school for me. You know spitfire or Bones things. But the Bones Rough Riders 60mm 80a hard inner core and soft outer core, brilliant love them. But from what 77a to 101a+. split that in the middle and you have 89a so 88a-90a. Surfskating is settled somewhere between longboard cruiser skateboard thing. Make sense to ride 88a or 90a. Jesus Christ. Have to smuggle that in my wife not knowing, she absolutely don’t like my quiver of surfboard and skateboards.

Rat Bones are Powell Peralta also, not Bones. The oringinals at 90a are an excellent mix of grip and slide for skatepark use. A lot of my instagram clips using the Curfboard trucks I am using them.

@@MarktheLandlockedSurfer Thanks Mark, i'm gonna test Rat Bones soon on very clean external concrete, let's see. EDIT : tested one session, they're quiet, improve speed, are grippy enough, but the feeling is closer to traditional skating wheels, which gives me less surf feeling with them. Much better than Carver park wheels for my taste, but maybe too small regarding my habits in 70mm. Same shape in 65mm may suit me better ?

Nice to see a review of them finally, they were on the Radar. I have the 56mm street wheels. Uummhh strange wheels. I took them to the skatepark and they felt so slow on concrete, they felt even more stickier than my 88A Seismic Crybabies and weirdly felt hard on Rough ground. In my opinion they are for street skating to the skatepark and then you change into hard wheels . My opinion, for a nice surfskate feel Oj team riders 61mm 95a or 57mm 95a Nomads do a much better job of being predictable and fast. I have some hard rock Bones 🦴 62mm skatepark formulas like 103a and they are really not much faster then Oj. I was disappointed with the dragons 🐉 didn’t bother to break them in. My bowl setup are Carver C5 Oj team riders. I know sounds like a fanboy but they keep this acceptable feel for surfskating on hard slippery concrete but still feels somewhat soft on rough ground.

@@MarktheLandlockedSurfer NHS brand are developing a new wheel formula with a inner core of 95a and outer core of 101a in the Oj elite formula . In theory like a suspension systems. Hopefully they will make something softer in the future. The elite formula feels nice under the feet, different from bones plastic feel. Similar to the spitfire 99a or maybe even more like the 97a haven’t tried them. But they just feel so much more buttery, exactly what you want when surfskating. I was surprised how much I can pump and carve before they start sliding out. I used to be on Otangs, I have most of them, nice quality urethane but still to soft for my liking. I skate to improve my surfing and while the soft wheels feel nice and gives rebound but they just get to sticky on concrete, especially in the bowl. I think I mentioned the Seismic Crybabies before in a comment section. I have the old version 60mm 88a and that is really a all round wheel for everything, wide and stable and nice rebound. But again all about preference. I would say what do you want, business in the front or party in back or maybe both. If you just want to party and cruise and don’t want to be speedy, soft big wheels is the answer. You want performance and speed go hard and small. My problem and why I steered away from 84a and under is that they are to sticky and grippy on concrete. I heard some good things about the 60MM LIL' EZ HAWGS as well but 78a pillow soft. But apparently they are spitting them out of the factory. But I found out that you easily get confused about wheels because they are made by longboard companies in soft urethane and hard urethane by regular TKP skateboard companies. My experience is that softer wheels, marketing and sold as slid wheels actually don’t slide at all that much. Yes downhill and fast they do to perfection. I’m surprised that YOW and Carver makes so shitty wheels and everybody is changing them out. Smoothstar guess okay but really a surf trainer but works good in the bowl, I must admit. But the company is one the wrong planet to the point of being arrogant and stupid, no feel for customers.
They forgot to patent their truck system. Now they made a new truck to fix the wheelbase offset and they sell the original for 110 bucks, buy the one on Amazon 25 bucks some thing no different. I’m harsh but fair they need to up their game no patience for marketing BS!!!. In general the surfskate companies need rethinking in deck design, no we have to make it look like a surfboard meaning flat and maybe a swallow tail, even on surfboards it’s perhaps a little overrated in terms of performance but a fish have to look like a fish. I’m finished getting rambling here.

Hey Mark. Came back to this vid as I am on a hunt for fast wheel for a bowl riding. Do you think those will work with a smoothstar? Another thing is that my main skatepark has a supper slippery concrete almost like glass and all of my wheels are sliding without any effort, so I am worried that those will be to hard to control in that application. My indoor park is very slippery with a gatorskin surface. The wheels roll fast for riding around but they do feel a little too icy when throwing a snap or bertslide, or if you have to pump in between transition. I absolutely hate the term "surf skate". It's an oxymoron. It's as bad as "democratic socialist" wich is just communism. While you can skate like a surfer, you cannot surf like a skater.

I mean that's what you're doing, is skating like a surfer. Not like we're calling surfing 'skatesurfing' lol
      ...Unless...brb, inventing the skatesurf board!
