    I'm glad to see this puzzle get featured so quickly, I was shocked to see it already. I definitely felt like this one was something special, so I'm glad so many seem to be getting a lot of enjoyment out of it.
    I know others have found a few different paths through this puzzle, but Simon's is exactly the path I intended. I'm especially impressed with how quickly he identified at every point what the next place to look was. Just brilliant to watch as always!

      I think Simon’s appreciation of the puzzle speaks volumes; a really innovative and engaging twist on the standard renban rule set. Whilst a tad too demanding for my little grey cells I thoroughly enjoyed watching the solve and appreciate the skill and imagination that went into the construction, for which I’d like to express my appreciation to you.

      That 7 he added as a corner mark in r9c9 when he meant to take it away from the centre marks (36:50) was a right, proper pain when he ended up taking it as an actual possibility again (37:41), though!

    • @Anne_Mahoney
      @Anne_Mahoney 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Simon, we're not cross with you for apologizing -- really! But you don't need to apologize for taking a moment to spot something, or for getting briefly stuck, or for any other imperfection that you might think is creeping into a solve. Say to yourself: Norinori, don't be sorry.

    • @elizabethgrosvenor153
      @elizabethgrosvenor153 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah, that bit made me sad. Like he'd taken the wrong lesson. Instead of "I am allowed to take my time and I have nothing to be sorry for" confidence, which is what we were aiming for, it seems to have twisted into "I can never stop doing The Bad Thing but now saying sorry is another Bad Thing" unconfidence. Which is not what we meant. But that should not be taken as "yet annother way I'm getting it wrong".
      Simon, we love you. Pauses and all. For the very vast majority of us, we wouldn't even be ABLE to skip ahead half a step if not for the long, long foundation YOU have already laid, teaching us things. We probably don't say it enough, but THANK YOU. As for me, because it might have been me that started this wave of thought... I wanted you to stop calling yourself names. Because names stick even if they're said in jest. I was so pleased a couple of weeks ago (I think?) when I heard you say "I think I'll forgive myself for missing that" rather than "I'm such a numpty". That's all I had been aiming for, being a bit kinder to yourself. If any of this has become an extra burden to you, instead of releasing you from one, then I sincerely and humbly apologise 💕

    @19:00 (circa): Gorgeous deduction by Simon leading to conclusion that the orange cell in box 5 is the digit 4, hence resolving the 1,3 pair and placing the 5.
    Actually, I came in a slightly different way to the same conclusion:
    The one higher and one lower digit than the orange digit can only be placed in row 6, column 7 resp 8 in box 6. Orange can be 4, 5,6, or 7. Just by elimination and using the nabnaR constraints and the constraints around the black dot, it follows that the orange cell must be a 4 (and r5c7=2), and resolves most of the other digits in box 6.The 7,9 pair in box 8 and position of the 3's in box 2 (all column 6) delivers the 5 in r5c6. It took me far more time than Simon, but it worked :-)

  • @pocoapoco2
    @pocoapoco2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    @15:00 Once you get the two initial 1's in the grid, I think the next easiest step is to figure out that the nabner line in row 5 box 6 can't contain a 1 or 9, and since it's a 4 cell line it's forced to consist of 2-4-6-8. Following from that the lower cell of the black dot, since it sees every cell of that aformentioned line, has to be a 3.

    Also Simon "So this 57 pair means this is not a 7." *proceeds to forget to remove 7 from the pencil marks*
    Simon moments later "Well now I have a 47 pair."

    I had to rely on Simon to kick start me with the white dot, but boy it was fun after that. Certainly multiple paths to solve which I love. Once 1 went into box six, the black dot directly forced the line above it to be all evens and an odd in the cell below, making it a 6 3 pair. Never seen anything like this one. Great original puzzle

    • @hummakavula3750
      @hummakavula3750 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@andrewsparkes8829 If 3 is above the black dot, there is no room for 1 on the line because it is blocked by r1c6 (should have mentioned that one too) and r4c7. The 9 in r6c9 sees the whole line so that leaves 5678 for 3 non-consecutive digits. Basically there is only space on the line for the 4 even digits which all see the cell under the black dot, so it must be odd. 6 3 pair.

    From a UI perspective I'm curious about the line fully in box 3, usually in this software such things run from centers of squares to centers of squares, but the diagonal part of this comes in low, crossing over the corner of an adjacent cell instead of just running at 45º like all the others...

      I think they create the overlays as a simple graphic image, manually. And probably just dragged the mouse from the wrong point in r2c7 (ie - not the centre if it), while 'drawing' the line. I imagine they have Photoshop's grid snap (or whatever program they use) turned on, but it has a smaller grid than simply "the centres and edges of cells" to enable drawing in the kropki dots too - because where the line starts seems to be the upper bound of where a kropki dot would be placed between r2c7 and r3c7.

    1:27:23 for me when I sat down and figured it out. That was really tough.
    Ah, I focused too heavily on what r6c6 could be, since it saw both dots and all the lines in box 6 in a way. I'd have started a lot faster by thinking about the non-Schrodinger cell in box 3 sooner!
    I saw r6c6 and realized it must be consecutive with r5c5 and r5c6, and also with r6c7 and r6c8. But since I didn't have r4c6 figured out, I couldn't actually determine what was in most of those cells. So then I started realizing some cells that couldn't be an 8!

      I started thinking about odds/evens and managed to conclude the line over the 1:2 dot must have the same parity and that the dot was 3:6 (because of parity and '1' not being on the dot). Then I was at a loss and started watching Simon's solve for a break. Simon has the ability to approach brand new puzzles logically and enthusiastically and explain it all so very clearly. This is much appreciated!!
      BTW, another thing I did differently later on was in box 3, which needed to have 3-4-5-7-8-9 placed on two nonrenban lines. I deduced one had to have 3-5-8 and the other 4-7-9. Determining which was which was done later.
      Simon, if you have to apologize, go ahead - as long as you are secretly aware of your brilliance ;-)

I was getting nowhere very slowly - 30 minutes staring at the center row trying to get it to do something - and then decided to peep at a frame from partway through the video to see if I could get a hint. I saw that Simon was doing something that looked like parity (which of course it wasn’t), but more importantly, I saw that it was starting from the white dot, so I went back to look at that, and of course from there it fell into place. 22:00 - I got the numbers on the line r6c6 to r5c9 by realizing that none of them can be odd because each of the numbers see a 1 and a 9.... This is a wonderful puzzle. Very thinky :)

    Me, at 34:10: "LOL r8c8 thinks it can be anything it wants to be."
    **two minutes later**
    r8c8 fixes basically the entire remainder of the puzzle. Well played little cell, well played.

    Really enjoying this puzzle! (Not done yet, and needed a little push by Simon to get me going.)
    Slight spoiler:
    The black dot is a good red herring, which kept me busy trying to figure out the possible combinations. The pros of this work, which took me way more time than it should, was that once Simon pointed me to the OTHER dot in the puzzle, I very quickly caught on to the digits in box 6. I still won't make the mistake of saying something like "Now we're cooking with gas!", but at least I'm off to a start... (ready to be shot down by Maverick, I'm sure....)

    This is a really great puzzle, but I did need Simon's help until "red is 4". After that it's a lot of fun and I like the kind of constraints the "nabner" lines introduce

    Some puzzles get under your skin and one becomes determined to finish them at almost any cost. This was on my screen on and off for two days. I should be infuriated by Simon spotting the initial logic in about a minute - took me rather longer - but it's hard to be infuriated by Simon when he is so enthusiastic and so appreciative. After that I hit the usual wall, and it wasn't until the second day that the light dawned viz-a-viz r6c6.

    That was wonderfully weird. Although the general path of my solve was similar to Simon's, almost every deduction Simon made was completely backwards from mine. From what I'd got already (call it X), I deduced Y, whereas Simon found Y and used it to deduce X. For instance, my logic around the black kropki was this: 1 and 9 were excluded from all cells of the line in R5 in box 6. This meant I had to pick four values for the line from 2-8. The only way to do this is with 2468. R6C8 on the dot sees all cells of the 2468 line, so it could only be 1 or 3, and as there was a 1 in the box, it had to be 3 with 6 above it. In contrast, Simon seemed to go around the houses and backed into this deduction.
    My solution seemed to have a cleaner, more logical flow, but then that's my own brain telling me - the same brain that solved it for me - so it may not be entirely objective.

  • @tomsommerville
    @tomsommerville 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    At the very start I worked out that r6c8 couldn't be an 8, because that would force the nabner line above it to be all odd [1,3,5,7], but the kropki dot in r5c8 would need to be a 4. I was really hoping that it was the break, but alas, it didn't seem to matter at all :(

    My logic might be wrong, but I think as soon as you have 1s in R1C6 and R4C7, the black Kropki dot is fixed. It obviously can't be a 1-2 because of the 1 in the box. But it also can't be either of the even-even pairs because the top nebneR line, not being able to contain 1 or 9, must be 2-4-6-8, and the bottom half of the Kropki dot sees all four digits in that nebneR line. So it must be 6-3.

    A trick I noticed that was helpful at a few points (box 6 in particular): every four-cell nabner line has one of two qualities:
    - it contains a 1 or a 9, or both, or
    - it is made up entirely of 2468

    • @brianshilling
      @brianshilling 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used that trick to sort out the 2468 line that's mostly in box 6. Since it sees the nine, you know the numbers are all the same parity.

    • @lizzyvv447
      @lizzyvv447 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@brianshilling No you don't at that point, it could have contained a 1 and then you could for example put 1 3 6 8.

    Your Honor, I would like to plead my case for not solving this one.
    After getting nowhere on my first attempt, I thought I saw a break-in on my second attempt: I thought I saw a 5-cell purple line in Box 3, which would have to be 1-3-5-7-9. However, I wasn't certain if it actually *was* a 5-cell line, or whether it was supposed to cross from r2c7 directly into r3c8 (over a vertex). Eventually, I decided to watch the video, at least in the beginning, just to get confirmation from Simon that the line was 5-cell. Instead, I ended up seeing the break-in to the entire puzzle, and had little else to figure out.
    And, as it turned out, I was wrong about that being a 5-cell line ... but I contest that the line crosses into r3c7.
    In all honesty, I don't think I would have figured this out anyway ... I just wish I didn't go down a path that, in retrospect, was complete nonsense.

    The 1 & 9 in box 6 force the 2468 nabner line, so you could have gotten it earlier in principle.
