Hi Joey! I can tell you are very caring towards these dogs and I really love that you’re stepping in to help them. However Aunty and the Mum are very very timid and when you grab them and pet them, it’s making the fear worse. It’s called “flooding.” (You can search up about it!) The dogs are frozen in fear, not enjoying the pats. When dealing with dogs like this, it’s best to keep your distance and allow them to come to you in their own time. It’s very terrifying for them when you grab them.
They’ve probably had little to no human interaction, and if they did, it was most likely abuse. When they are being pat, they are far too scared to care whether it feels good or not and doing this over and over again won’t do anything unfortunately.
I recommend a dog trainer with these guys or sitting down, not talking, avoiding eye contact and just staying with them. Occasionally throwing treats will help them come closer. Also avoid as much handling as possible until they show signs they’re okay with it. Let them come to you in their own time!
This is not intended to be hate in any way! Just a little advice for someone who has worked with animals.

Yes i agree. The time is ticking by. I have nothing against Joey, but aunyt and the mumma is a difficult case. You dont grab them like that. They are so afraid and they anxiety are at a high level. Joey test to give her CBD oil. Always have treats with you. Find out what they love. And yes you have them in smaller place first, but they can see thrue it, so its big for them. You should have them in a bathroom, little bathroom. Dont be afraid to ask for help Joey. There are proffessionals out there. Have the dogs seen one of your own dogs? How did they react? Its also good for an abuse dog to be in pack, then they start to trust you because they see the other dogs trust you. But if i was you. I would have placed them in proffessionals hands. Because this is a whole another level of abuse. It have been a time now, and they should be around people now, just watching from a distant, all the time, and then they will come to you. I hope you do the best for them Joey. These fear-based behaviors don’t improve until the underlying issues have been dealt with. Further, as the fear worsens, so does the problem behavior. Dr. Dan Estep, PhD and Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist (CAAB), notes that, unfortunately, early and perhaps subtle signs of fear - ears pulled back, tail tucked, avoidance - are often discounted as things that all dogs do. If these signs are ignored, the signals may become more obvious and include panting and dilated pupils. Even then, it may be possible to distract the dog from the fear source. But, over time, fearful dogs act more intensely, become harder to distract, and then become destructive or reactive. Only then, when the problem is much more serious and harder to resolve, do people seek help. That’s why it’s so important to recognize the signs of fearfulness in dogs and intervene before the behavior becomes more difficult to deal with.
According to Dr. Estep, “fears have behavioral, physiological, and subjective components.” Some dogs flee in an attempt to avoid the stimuli that elicit fear; these dogs may hide under the bed or behind their guardian, or simply turn away from whatever it is that frightens them. The appearance of some dogs’ eyes change when they are afraid: the pupils may dilate, or more of the sclera (whites of the eyes) may be visible in an expression known as “whale eye.” This may be the result of a dog watching what frightens them by moving their eyes so they can see it without looking at it directly. Or, a dog may scan an area repeatedly in a highly vigilant manner.
Fearful dogs may also adopt telltale body postures: crouching in a lowered body position or lying down and freezing. Many dogs whine, bark or make other distress vocalizations. A fearful dog who is forced to confront or contend with what’s scaring them may become defensively aggressive while still exhibiting signs of fear.

@emcaitlin as a person who has had chihuahuas for years and whose parents have bred them, this is not normal. Chihuahuas actually are very confident if raised properly, i.e. like a dog and not a delicate baby that needs overprotecting. They're also highly trainable and loyal just a little stubborn at times. They do often have genetic aggression issues unfortunately due to bad breeding and being smaller than everything around them does make them naturally nervous and cautious of new things just like other small animals like rodents and birds. Being small in our world is scary. But if exposed to the world properly and safely they are actually quite confident little guys :).
These chihuahuas have been unsocialised for generations and the mother has probrably had to fight to survive. I hate to be that guy but joey needs to be taught how to interact with nervous dogs if hes going to continue rescuing because honestly, he's going about it all wrong. He's being way to threatening to the mother and the older pup.

I assume the dogs have been severely neglected. They haven’t been socialized, probably kept in horrible conditions in cages and have had next to no human interaction besides for food and water. Their fear will dwindle more with time. They don’t currently know if you’re good or bad they just know you’re different. Thank you for showing them love!❤ They definitely deserve nothing less. I hope you find love as well because with a soul as pure as yours they’d be a very lucky person❤️.

It may be beneficial to introduce a confident dog to the fearful ones. They may open up better to another dog or animal versus a human due to their previous situation. They can see the positive interactions you have with the confident dog and learn from them.

My dog is a rescue, she had the exact same reaction to us as the mother, it took her a good year to get used to coming out the kennel on her own, even then she would hide under sofas or tables from the slightest noise. She was terrified and I mean terrified of brooms, mops, anything that looked like a long pole. So I came to terms that she must’ve been abused in her previous home and just loved her as much as possible. I never yelled at her even if she did something wrong. Used a gentle voice. And now 6 years later, she is my brave little baby that even barks at the front door. I love her to death! 😊

They’ve got triggers, so hands coming towards them. And feeling chased when you approach them, so patting from underneath and also getting them to come to you. Having your back turned to them with your hand stretched out behind with chicken. If they are hungry enough (you should exclusively hand feed them) they will learn to come to you.

Stop forcing them to interact with you, they are clearly beyond scared and that amount of stress is not good for them.
I have a dog who barely got human interaction since his original owners were neglecting him, he didn't understand human touch and he would aviod being touch a lot of the time. And we never forced him to accept our love, we simply backed off when he flinched. We let him get more comfortable so we don't make him stressed.
I feel really bad for the puppies and mother dog, I wish you would actually read the comments who are trying to help. Your pretty much showing the dogs that you won't respect them and will force them to be in uncomfortable situations.
They need more time to get use to there environment and have things they can burrow, they will most definitely feel more comfortable and they have an actual way to get away from you. You really need to stop chasing after them and let them come to you first.

You should cover three sides of the enclosure with newspapers or blankets so they feel more secure.
And add a bed or two and some blankets outside of the carrier for them to burrow in.
You’re doing so much great work for them, but they’re going to be nervous in that wide open exposed space with nothing else but that carrier, which is becoming a crutch.
I have a chihuahua and they can be nervous even when they’re well adjusted and happy.

  • @Cececanino
    @Cececanino ปีที่แล้ว +3

Hey Joey you do amazing ❤. A tip to help reduce the anxiety nervous behaviour. It's most likely The lack of socialisation. That is a critical learning period for dogs and they never had that. Spend time sitting with the nervous dogs In the space and let them come to you. It can take hours but spend a couple of hours sitting with them and not forcing any interaction, don't reach to them or try to hold or stroke ,they will come round. When they do come to you gently stroke them under the chin and below the head its less intimidating. They will slowly trust you but it needs a lot of time. I have a degree In animal behaviour and dogs are my speciality. X

I think that the fear comes from not having much human interaction. When they see you, they get startled because you’re much bigger then they are. Smaller dogs typically will be more fearful and cautious than bigger dogs (because of their size.) Their size with them being not understanding that you aren’t a threat, makes them very nervous. It takes a lot of time to desensitize them to human interaction and to gain their trust. My small dog was the same way when we adopted her but she got used to us. When meeting new people, she is still very cautious and picks who she trusts carefully.

The mother’s and auntie’s anxiety is likely because they hardly had any human contact and I wouldn’t be surprised if when they did it was abuse. Rather than forcing them to get pet by you and putting on your lap etc. I would recommend keeping a distance and rather letting them come to you because while you have good intentions you may actually be increasing there anxiety by trying to force it on them. With dogs that anxious the best way to build that trust is to let them come to you. Hope that helps. I have so much respect to you for everything you do for animals, it’s so inspirational ❤

@joey Please please please read some of the comments regarding the handling of Auntie & Mama! It is not meant to be hateful or anything but only has the wealth and proximity of adoption in mind! They are massively overwhelmed and require a lot of sensitivity, careful approaches, no handling at all and only positive reinforcement for wanting to approach on their own! Their psyche is seriously damaged through not being socialized in their critical period of the first 84 days and it shows so much, please only approach them with your back, never with hands and arms, and just sit with your back turned to them every single day for a good amount of time. If they approach throw them some really high value treat like chicken, but NEVER try to push it towards them with your hand!! All coming from a place of love and no hate, but please please take this into consideration!!!!🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

(hubby wanted a "truck dog"... lol..) his whole litter was skittish as they get.. he's still a ball of nerves.. loves lounging around the house, running around the yard, but does NOT want to leave the house and go anywhere.. people come to visit he's likely to be found cowering behind my legs... he is 3 now.. and has started getting a little braver.. but.. no idea what is up with him... and from what i have heard from the folks who adopted his siblings.. they've all been like that... never any hardships on any of them...

I have met many other Chihuahua's in the past and can confirm of this theory, but I do realize that sometimes their anxiety can be based on just their personality. It's hard to tell, but for the mother I would highly assume that there has been some sort of abuse in the past. The general panic and uncomfy vibes can be felt when she is being petted or held. Please don't give up! Once you teach dogs and develop a relationship to understand them it get's easier. You are doing amazing! I do really think that an upfront approach isn't working for Mama, and probably not Auntie either.
I think a slow, treat based introduction would be best. Give her a treat when you go into the kennel, and then if she walks up to you? Treat. She lets you pet her? Treat.
She just hasn't really improved that much since the first or second day, and grabbing her and forcing her below you just isn't a great "I'm not scary" tactic.

Yes. He is going about this in the worst way possible. You should never force a nervous dog into "affection". He needs serious training on dealing with nervous dogs if he wants to continue with rescuing.

It has to do with socialization from a early age. My first dog i took everywhere with me so she became super social. My second dog however i had stopped going out to social events so he never really interacted with anyone but me and my family was never the type to interact with the dogs either just me. So he became super fearful of everyone else that wasnt me and also gets spooked super easily. U can still get them to warm up to people but it has to be slow, soft sounds and at their pace. U cant chase them around and force it. They have to want to come to u. Atleast thats how ive been getting my dog to slowly warm up to people.

I commented in the last video I really hope you’ll see this soon you gotta sit on the opposite side of her pen with just her and it and just toss treats to her small but high value what you don’t wanna do is force her to come to you pick her up pull her to you pet her without her coming to you. You need to show her that she can trust you and figure you out first another way is to lay down and let her become curious.

for anyone wondering, here is joey's animal list (in chronological order):
    - Wolf (male husky, rescued from craigslist (?) as puppy)
    - Storm (male husky, white, adopted from a rescue as puppy, lives w Daniel)
    - Lark (female husky/german shepherd mix, adopted from a rescue as puppy (?), lives w Daniel's mom)
    - Lark had babies, seven of them (Red, Teal, Lavender, Pink, Yellow, Green, Blue)
    - Moon (male husky, kept one of lark's babies-Teal)
    - Shadow (male husky, J&D tried to keep Lark's baby Red, but Moon & Shadow struggled with littermate syndrome so Shadow was rehomed like the others)
    - Sakura (black female pregnant rescue cat) (kept her)
    - Sakura's kittens, the zodiac litter (Gemini, Taurus, Aquarius, Aries, Leo, Sagittarius)
    - Azula (female foster cat, was pregnant but lost the litter)
    - Hen (foster mama from junkyard)
    - junkyard pups (Duck, Goose, Shark, Otter, Bear, Moose)
    - foster mama dog Roo
    - Roo's litter (Hare, Tiger, Bison, Panda, Raccoon, Monkey)
    - Daenerys (white foster mama kitty)
    - D's kitties, the Greek Goddess litter (Athena, Persephone, Aphrodite, Nemesis, Rhea)
    - took care (for a couple of days) of a mama duck and her 9 babies that wandered into his backyard and got stuck
    - May (foster mama husky)
    - May's babies, the Months litter (January, February, March, April, June, July, August, September, October, November, December)
    - Coco (husky foster mama pt2, false pregnancy, surrogate to Disney pups)
    - husky babies abandoned in box (Disney litter--Copper, Pluto, Bolt, Scar, Bruno, Darla)
    - Daisy (husky foster mama pt3)
    - Daisy's babies (flower/tree litter; Goldie, Lilly, and Daphne didn't make it; Ash, Cyprus, Oren)
    - Lacey/Onyx (black & white foster kitty mama)
    - Lacey/Onyx's kittens, gem litter (Opal, Pearl, Peridot, Flint, Mica, Jasper)
    - 4 blind Frenchies (Mike Wazowski, Baby Jack-Jack, Linguini, Lea Michele)
    - Monty had puppies, sounds like backyard breeding (12, white/Snowball-stillborn, red/Griz, yellow/Woods, orange/Buck, aqua/Huckleberry, blue/Timber, green/Bow, light pink/Winter, lime/Fern, black/Aspen, dark pink/Yarrow, purple/Twig)
    - Hunter (female golden retriever, kept one of Monty's babies-Yarrow)
    - pregnant mama pug & 7 puppies (2 stillborn); helped her through birth before transferring their care to another foster more experienced with bottle feeding bc it was a difficult litter
    - 5 pups from puppy mill (Skeletron, Miss Mama, Milky, Pan, Pipsqueak)
    - chihuahuas from hoarding situation; 3 pups (runt passed, Toaster, Strudel), mama, extra adult male (Auntie)
*Montana/Monty (female golden retriever) is often in videos; she is Daniel's (Joey's ex) dog, but often comes to Joey doggy daycare
*the babies are usually adopted by other people (other than Moon) and then renamed! some of them have instagrams and have shared their new names/stories, but I'm not including those here
*I first created this list a long time ago and add to it every time Joey takes in a new animal...because I have it saved I just copy/paste it onto every (I try, but it's more like "most") animal-related video he posts, so no, it actually doesn't take a lot of my time or effort. I just like lists. Thank you to everyone who is giving thanks about the amount of effort though haha!

It most likely can be abuse or neglect that could have led to Mama and Auntie being distant and scared. I have 4 dogs and they don't really see many people, but me and my bf. They are shy around others and bark, but they aren't super frightened like those 2. It could be a mix of not having proper human interaction and mistreatment. I'm just happy they are with someone as loving as you, Joey. I've watched you for years, and I feel like you've become a better person every year. 💖💖💖

Absolutely! I think mom was abused but she's doing so much better under your care. She's not as scared and you suggested maybe she didn't get enough socialization and you could be right on that issue, it may be a combination of both. Her sons have been working on mom so I think she eventually will come out of it but poor thing to be so scared of humans.Auntie is coming around. Daniel sooo kind to give you so much stuff for Hunter. Those margarita pops look amazing! I like the way you are serving them up!!

What causes that kind of fear and anxiety is not abuse of human interaction it's the lack thereof no human interaction. She doesn't know what humans are and she doesn't know that humans are good so she's afraid of humans in general. Probably because she has had zero human interaction before you saved her.

Those type of dogs are usually one person dogs as is and usually if they already have a bond with that one person and haven’t had much human interaction with other people then they are just that way around other people and it takes a lot for them to form that bond and a relationship with another human again

  • @mysticfox9718
    @mysticfox9718 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I love the names for the puppies! The brave one is definitely like the Brave Little Toaster. The lighter one reminds me of the cream you put on a scoundrel. Both definitely have different personalities.
Mama definitely needs more time. Maybe something bad happened to her that made her afraid of humans so badly? But she hasn’t had any other human contact so she could be unsure about human contact?
Auntie looks like she’s kinda getting there, but not quite yet.

  • @kathleenfarber6021

Unfortunately there isnt always abuse when they act like that! Lack of socialization causes then to act the same! And with that mant dogs in 1 home none were getting proper socialization or care :( feral dogs act the exact same and I have fostered a ton!

  • @kathleenschoultz
    @kathleenschoultz ปีที่แล้ว +3

Mother is improving tho Joey! She’s smiling more and willingly sitting next you, even if she’s just lying still. Try a little peanut butter on ur finger when she’s laying next to you. It’ll help her feel comfy with interacting w ur hands and it’ll show her that ur hands are safe ❤️
