Hawaii (1967)

  • Hawaii, United States of America (USA).
Various shots show middle-aged Hawaiian women in flowery dresses and hats playing guitars and ukuleles while hula girls in grass skirts dance before them. Elderly women sit on mats in a village and thread flower garlands (leis) and weave mats. A Hawaiian man and woman travel down a water lily-covered river in a traditional boat (he paddles it along). Several shots show an unnamed city; a car park (!); American and Hawaiian flags flying; an open air shopping mall called Ala Moana.
At Sea Life Park on the island of Oahu we see several shots of dolphins, porpoises and whales being fed in a large lake enclosure; spectators watch from a pirate boat moored in the enclosure; more sit beside the lake and watch the creatures do tricks. M/S of the exterior of Ilikai Hotel; L/S of the view over the waterfront and harbour as we go up in the glass lift. Views of the sea and swimming pool from high up in the hotel. Various beach shots: palm trees, western sunbathing girls in bikinis (with orange tans), Hawaiian girls frolic in the waves, men surfing on the waves.
We take a boat trip out of the harbour with three young men - the sea is so blue! L/Ss of the coast and Diamond Head mountain. L/S of a Pan Am aeroplane coming in to land at Honolulu Airport; passengers coming off the plane are greeted with a lei (flower garland) and a kiss from Hawaiian girls. In a waterside garden two hula girls decorate a boat with leis; three hula girls in patterned skirts do a traditional dance.
Several shots show a Luau - a Hawaiian feast somewhat like a huge barbecue - at dusk beside a hotel; two men carry a roasted pig on a stretcher through the seated crowd. Commentator says the pigs are roasted in an underground oven with sweet potatoes and pineapple - mmm! L/S of a beach and coastline at dusk / twilight. I want to be here!
Cuts exist - see separate record.

WOW...my first visit to Hawaii was during the summer of 1967...a high school graduation trip for my mom and I...stayed at the Ilikai Hotel...loved the islands so much that I returned 2 years later to work at the front desk/reservations at the Ilikai. That changed my life...for those who know me you will also know why! It was great to remember how it was back then. It has changed so much :-( that it is almost unrecognizable.

OMG, this brings back so many memories.. when i got my HD from the Navy in Sep of '70 caught a flight frm S.F. & headed straight for Honolulu with only $500 in my pocket, no job prospects & no idea what I was going to do there! Touched down & the 1st thing I saw was a newspaper headline that Jimi Hendrix, my guitar idol, had just died so i will never forget that date, Sep.18, 1970. Had 2 jobs there before getting an overseas position with Kentron Hawaii Ltd. on Canton Is. in the Phoenix Is. group. Thanks to Google maps I looked up my old address on Pacific Heights only to find the old house I lived in was demolished & a nice apt complex resting in it's place.. would like to go back someday just to see how much it's changed after all these years.

Grass, real natives, canals, a memory. Cement, roads, hwys and parking lots. Had 2 girl firends from there. Visited in 77 and 81, not close to those days- all covered with even more dense hotels. No boards on the beach.

Lots of these guys would be servicemen on their weeks leave from service in Vietnam. Apparently it was mostly the married men who chose to take their leave in Hawaii. The single men preferred Bangkok, Taiwan and Sydney, no prizes for guessing why!

I know Hawaii from the local people point of view. I left Oahu in 1953. We had many luaus at my home. We never put pineapples in the imu. Pig, stuffing, sweet potatoes, lau lau and kulolo are the only ones I remember.

Absolutely amazing quality of the presumably 16mm Kodachrome film print (or even 35mm Technicolor?). Incredible colour. Would be exceptional to have been scanned in HD. Great content too.

6:10 Pan Am Clipper Defiance - N704PA - the Boeing 707 that The Beatles traveled on their historic journey to the USA. The aircraft was with Pan Am until about 1971. Those early Pratt and Whitney JT3C engines sure were screamers!

I just moved to Honolulu. I thought Hawaii would be nice, but there are so many homeless people making the city look like trash. Weather is great, no complaints there. Why the city or state allow homeless to squat throughout the island is incomprehensible.

It's pretty sad. Society isn't making it easy for them to get back on their feet. Especially with the corruption on every level in hawaii.
