When the anime was brought to the US in the late seventies. They kept the music, and story. They wrote new lyrics for the English version of the song, but they fit, and only changed a few names. Including the name of the ship. However they do reference that it was the greatest battleship of the Japanese Imperial Navy.
Back in the late summer of 1979 I first caught Star Blazers, and it is, as far as I am concerned, THE greatest animated series EVER. A combo of Star Wars, M*A*S*H, Saving Private Ryan, and Star Trek....and the 2012 re-boot was simply amazing. Hollywood, get Chris Nolan to do for Star Blazers what he did for Batman. Seriously!
Funny you mention that, Isao Sasaki began his career as an Elvis impersonator who covered some of his songs and then moved on to be one of Japan's most prolific anime OP and ED singers through the 70s and 80s in particular. He also is the dub voice of choice for Sylvester Stallone in Japanese.

I love the fact that the Japanese Navy plays and sing this (with a cruel angel thesis).
I mean the song is very catchy and the ship also based on a real Japanese ship during WWII which also being a Battleship that symbolizes Japan itself.
The guy singing this is like the Elvis Presley of Japan. I can't remember his name right offhand, but I definitely recognize his voice.

Not Yamamoto. It is Yamato. Yamamoto is a name of a person. Yamato is the name of the largest Japanese warship in the world.
This is one of the most popular anime songs in Japan. It is really a very serious song.
