Modern horses are actually much less aggressive than horses throughout most of history. I’m not sure about the 17th century, but the 16th century and earlier, war horses were explicitly bread and chosen for it. It often caused problems in the stables since the horses would bite, and only really allow their owner to ride them.
I would speculate that French Gendarme during the first years of the 16th century were the pinnacle of heavy cavalry in a medieval context. yes alexander Alexander Leslie the earl of leven served with Gustavus Adolfus, so did david leslie the 1st lord newark and William Baillie. mind you most of the scottish commanders had seen action during the thirty years wars. which is why during the bishops war the scots had and an army and the english were barley trained militia.
@@poil8351 I didn't know that. Thank you for the information. I assume that the Scots were fighting under French command during the thirty years war. Isn't that right?
5:59 that's a english style battlefield armor made for the King of Portugal Peter II, he wore it during the Portuguese Restauration War, it had some feathers on top.
5:54 The reason it’s shaped into 3 bars is because for a cavalryman to thrust into a man’s face during a charge he’ll throw himself off balance leaving him open to attack. Also even if his horse is stationary the skittering of the horse can and will throw the angle of the thrust off, especially during a melee as horses will panic. Cromwells troopers it seems were designed to fight sword bearer cavalry, while still performing well against lancers, only a well trained lancer can piece the head of an enemy horseman at the gallop.
I believe a lot of the troops in the civil wars were Dragoons, which in those days were mounted infantry. They rode to the battlefield but fought on foot.
Very interesting, I wonder how this episode would have been if you had been able to train with both units just to compare and contrast them or had two people to spend time with each.
Very interesting video, it is great to see reconstitution mixed with historical narrative and you do it wonderfully great! Thank you and congratulations
The helmet may stop slashing to the face, and the 'Buff coat', may stop sword cuts, but neither will stop a decent thrust! Everyone loves a good thrust!
The host's last comment rings so true. It was also stated in an Osprey Publishing Book on the English Civil War. The war affected the lives of possibly millions of people throughout England and Wales, at a time when the total population was thought to be around 4 to 5 million. Hundreds of thousands may have witnessed or being part of the many battles and skirmishes that took place. But literacy was not widespread in England and Wales at that time and even if so, few would have wanted to write their experiences down, preferring instead to forget the war as fast as possible. So they died, taking their stories with them to the grave. How much more would have been known of the English Civil War had literacy been more widespread, or if journalism was as advanced as it is today with people researching, interviewing witnesses and participants, we'll never know.
I like how you talk about the war like it was a modern war, I mean you focus on the story’s and stuff and not just “X fought y for z and a people died” ect ect.
I grew up riding horses on my ranch, so I already know how to ride. I'm American, so I already know how to shoot, including black powder rifles and pistols, and fortunately for me, the English can speak English. I think I can survive it if I could get in a position of command like a sergeant or something. With my modern knowledge, I could pull some raiding tactics from the Confederate guerillas like Quantrill and Bloody Bill Anderson. If I couldn't get in a position of command, then I suppose it would suck but I think I could survive.

@@poil8351 I didn't know that. Thank you for the information. I assume that the Scots were fighting under French command during the thirty years war. Isn't that right?
@@TeutonicEmperor1198 actually mostly under swedish command. though some did serve in the french and dutch armies as well.
@@poil8351I forgot that Scotland was a different country back then.

One of the best channels on youtube!
Just discovered your channel and im really enjoying these immersive historical snapshots .
Thanks so much!
This was a great episode, can't wait to see what you bring in the future, subscribed!
Your series is great! Any chance you might be willing to tackle any topics from the age of exploration or the colonial wars during the Victorian era?
Thanks for the time you spend to make these videos.👍
Brilliant stuff, as always!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing content. Thank you for the commitment and originality.
What an excellent video! Love all these, please make more!
Excellent video. Love this style.
I believe a lot of the troops in the civil wars were Dragoons, which in those days were mounted infantry. They rode to the battlefield but fought on foot.
I subscribed because of your shorts. I watched this video because I watched all of the shorts.
Very interesting. I'd be interested to see such comprehensive insight on the Border Reivers.
I was actually gonna suggest this but then this video dropped. Nice Channel.
best one in the series so far!

This is such a great channel
Another excellent video Louee will go far !
Very interesting, I wonder how this episode would have been if you had been able to train with both units just to compare and contrast them or had two people to spend time with each.
Exllent produced documentary . I hope one day I will make one about mamluks
Another delight, keep up the hard work!
the efforts to these video are amazing
Very interesting video, it is great to see reconstitution mixed with historical narrative and you do it wonderfully great! Thank you and congratulations
Glad you enjoyed it!
The helmet may stop slashing to the face, and the 'Buff coat', may stop sword cuts, but neither will stop a decent thrust! Everyone loves a good thrust!
Untrained people will slash before using the thrust.
This is good stuff. I'm subscribing!
This is really professionally done! Fantastic!
Thank you very much!
Love your videos! Its fun to see how the quality and editing has improved.

Man I love your videos!
A very interesting video, on a topic I know very little about
Nice episode!
Can you do a video about if you could survive as a Hussar in the Seven Years War
Don’t die, follow orders. Boom how to survive as any military personnel in any era of warfare. I jest. But that’s basically it!
Great Video !!
I would love to watch an English civil war film. Cromwell was good but a modern remake would be great.
No synthetic drugs for sure but you think this conflict didn't feature sex and sadistic violence? @anthroimperzia3927
@anthroimperzia3927 it’s also not from a big brand so even less people would watch. But it sounds like a good idea!
Awesome! Keep making videos!
love these vids
I grew up riding horses on my ranch, so I already know how to ride. I'm American, so I already know how to shoot, including black powder rifles and pistols, and fortunately for me, the English can speak English. I think I can survive it if I could get in a position of command like a sergeant or something. With my modern knowledge, I could pull some raiding tactics from the Confederate guerillas like Quantrill and Bloody Bill Anderson. If I couldn't get in a position of command, then I suppose it would suck but I think I could survive.
