    This knowledge is GOLD. Wise people that want to build great sounding amps will listen :D. I'm surprised there's only one EZ81 supplying all that power to 4 el84's. Usually you will see a GZ34 like a vox ac30, but I guess thats his secret to getting power amp distortion. The power supply can't produce enough juice to the output tubes and they saturate.

    Johan, such great videos you make. I took a Blues Jr and did the BillM modifications and those mods really made the amp much better. I have a custom built hand wired Bassman amp by Michael Clark that I put Mullard, Tung-Sol and RCA tubes in it and that made such a difference in the tone. Seems we are all chasing the tone monkey and can't catch it. The topic of how all these circuits work is very interesting and takes years to learn it. Kind of like trying to learn the fretboard. This gentleman is a wonderful source of information. Thanks.

    There are three types of passive tonestacks common to guitar/bass tube amps... The blackface plate feed stack sitting between the first gain stage and second gain stage,, In stock form (TB) it has a small value mid resistor scooping out a lot of frequencies around 500Hz. Also if you lower the TMB pots in a blackface the sounds dissapears..
    THen we have the fender bassman/marshall cathode follower tonestack,, the controls do slightly less and more midrange is built into the tonestack and the mid scoop if you decide to lower the mid pot to 0 sits higher around 800Hz.
    The VOX top boost looks to my eyes when looking at a schematic like a cathode follower one but has slightly different values in the tonestack.. Its scoops the mids much more than a bassman/marshall stack but the center frequency is rather similar at around 800Hz.
    Lastly you have the James tonestack or Baxendale tonestack you find on amps like Ampeg that reacts a bit different on the pots than either the bassman/marshall or the blackface tonestack..

    • @sfasfads
      @sfasfads 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The treble is the most interesting knob on the FMV stack, acting as a blend and giving control of the mid freq notch.
      James stacks are a little more intuitive boosting highs and/or lows.

      Johan Segeborn beside the idea with a set up video I have another one that I think it will be very aprecieted by viewers. One about the difference in construction between a Squire strat or telecaster and an USA strat or telecaster. Not about the woods or hardware but about the neck length the way the frets are distributed were the neck starts relative to the bridge etc. Becoes somehow they look different. There is something weird about the Squire. They have the same scale but you can achieve the scale in different ways longer neck or longer distance from the bridge to the neck and shorter neck. This is something that NOBODY talks when they are comparing Squire and Usa Fender. Mexico strat looks more like Squier. So the construction leyout. Lenght of guitar in total, neck Lenght, where the neck is mounted relative to the bridge etc. I hope you will understand and like my idea. A Lott of people have Squiers me included. A classic vibe 50' and it is not good at all. Sounds very good but weird playability. And we wonder. Thank you !!

    For a while now I been considering to learn to make my own guitar amps. As a fan of Vox AC15 amps. I always wanted to make my own version where there the powered amp stage is in stereo, and have not one effect loop like with the Vox AC 30, but two. One effect loop is for the left speaker, and the other effect loop is for the right speaker. Also I like to have a signal boost as found on the Vox Pathfinder 15R.
    Having said that, nice video and keep up the good work. From Adelaide, Australia

    Nice design Utilizing lower gain tubes + EL-84's are sensitive so no need for hi Mu dual triodes. The 4 EL-84's can show the potential for dynamics and tone without being subdued with so much preamp gain/compression. Additionally the 'James' tone section isn't as signal sucking as a traditional TMB cathode follower design.

    Nice too this kind of talking in this channel too. :) That Fender part shows how important part speaker is.
    And about stuffs.. Sure it can be done, just have to make right choices, and to know your gear is the key too. :) Today it's much more easy to get great music stuff cheaper than old days i think, solid-state or tube if it's amp.

    sounds great just like a boutique amp. of course its not about expensive components, but component selection and circuit knowledge. there is a huge markup on marshall and boutique amps, we know this becuse we pay for the name to look "pro" on stage and in the studio

    • @JohanSegeborn
      @JohanSegeborn  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +blablabla Yeah there are so many myths about amps, it's easy to forget that a talented designer can sculpt any tone with a conscious design and tight tolerances, and not just trial and error using unpredictable but sometimes cool components.

      Ok, Just to clarify: VacuumVoodoo is my screen nickname I use online in audio related discussion.
      So to answer your question:
      1. I build all my amps myself, no labor is outsourced. Each is made to individual order.
      2. I don't have distributors or dealers
      3. I am a one man band. This means my production is limited to maximum 12 amps/year.
      4. Just google my name or amp name, you'll find info. Reviews of my amps are online in the PremierGuitar magazine
      5. Contact me by email address listed on my( almost defunct) anacon-tech.com website.
      NOTE: the amp used in this video is a one off custom/prototype. The Zagray! 2017 batch is in preparation.
      Thanks for watching & listening.

    i love this video. so much informative and useful. i guess $450 is standard price for making clone amps... that's why bugeria 's price are about 500-700$ for their marshall amps clone ... :-P probably they get 50-150 dollar nett profit LOL

      Comparing consumer price of an amp manufactured in large volumes in a low labor cost country against parts cost of a "one off" full custom commissioned design. In all honesty, it makes no sense.
      Should an design like this be put through a "tailor made" manufacturing process the selling price would easily exceed 4-5 times cost of materials. There's a similar amp on the market, as far as number of tubes, generic components and labor intensity goes, with a selling price of just below 2000 U$. The label says "handmade in USA" which compared to Sweden is a low manual labor cost country.
      It is also the main reason I sell only directly to end user, no dealers, no distributors, no middle man.

    I don't the sag on this amp comes from the power transformer,, That one looks massive and I would presume that it can deliever a lot of current without much voltage drop.. No the sag comes more likely from the use of a EZ81 rectifier.. I have seen this rectifier in a 15-18 watt 2 x EL84 amp where it is pretty stiff.. But in this amp it has to feed 4 EL84 tubes which typically run pretty hot in a guitar amp (hot bias),, the max current at around normal EL84 voltages in a guitar amp (300-350VDC) is 150mA with a 50µf first smooting cap (not choke).. I think that the 4 EL84 tubes and two 5171/12ax7 and the slightly higher curent 12ay7 tube will draw more than 150mA when you push the amp giving you a voltage drop across the Ez81 rectifier..

    • @JohanSegeborn
      @JohanSegeborn  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +dansk björn Its certainly bold to second guess Aleksander Niemand. :-) Especially just by looking at the Power Transformer.
      However I appreciate feedback, we'll adress it in the next clip.

    • @vacuumvoodoo
      @vacuumvoodoo 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't guess, I measure. ;-) Load regulation, as I explained. BTW oversized PT can actually exhibit worse efficiency and load regulation than standard 10% due to higher iron losses than in optimally designed transformer. It's possible to compensate additional iron losses by using thicker copper wire to reduce resistive losses the windings. This makes the transformer significantly more expensive which negates the idea of a tight budget. FYI. The size of transformer used is optimal for the application. Considering that the amp consumes total of close to 90W, transformers efficiency ca 90% result in a minimum 100VA rated transformer. Mains voltage can deviate 10% each way from nominal which calls for a worst case margin of 20%, you end up with a 120VA rated power transformer for optimal operation of the amp. Yes, it does sag, about the same amount as the EZ81 rectifier. At low volumes - not a lot of sag, just enough to introduce a little slow compression.
      Peace!, darlings.

      if you want no sag on a 32-50w tube amp but want a tube rectifier the gz34 is the tube. rated at 250mA at 350VDC.

And Marshall Lead 12 is monster. I have combo, I would like to get head, but they cost like 400 EUR now... Have you ever tried Marshall Mosfet 100? 3210 or 3310?
