    Love the bike. Very futureproof with the etap and power meter. Great paintjob and it has everything the average road cyclist needs. I say average because its a little bit heavy for a serious racer. Unfortunately for something really light these days ya gotta shell out a few thousand more for lighter frame. This bike is all I need but I plan to splurge and get the SLR frame.

    I was surprised with domane sl5 10kg weight but it looks like Trek is full of surprises. I was actually considering to buy a new emonda sl5 but it turned out that in my size it weights 9.3kg without pedals which is a mountain bike territory.

    • @cmx2828
      @cmx2828 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      it also depends on the frame size.
      And that you don't get competitive weight with an SL5 is logical.
      It is the same with every manufacturer today.
      For me (frame size 60) the emoda is a lightweight.

    • @pavlokhryshcheniuk7765
      @pavlokhryshcheniuk7765 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cmx2828 it is't true for every manufacturer. The components that trek is putting on their bikes almost feels like a scam. Bontrager wheelset on my friends' RIM brake emonda is over 2.2kg without skewers and rim tape. And they charge insane money for that. I ended up buying rose reveal disc which in my size (61cm) is 8.2kg and it was even cheaper than the sl5. I understand that comparing trek to direct to consumer brands is a bit unfair but even compared to the other brands, trek value is laughable

    If this is a climbing bike why did they include a 10t on the cassette ?
    For climbing I would have gone with a 12or 14-36t cassette.

    • @Jamesthebikeguy
      @Jamesthebikeguy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well a couple of things. The Emonda has transferred to more than a "climbing bike" as the video went into, but the SRAM Force groupset has totally different gearing. Check the front chainrings and you will see the low gear is similar to a traditional 34/32.

    • @stinkyfungus
      @stinkyfungus 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because what goes up... also has to come down?
      Emonda isn't a "climbing bike" - its an all rounder, it always was. Its the bike you take if you need to go fast - everywhere.
      Look at how much effort was put into keeping it laterally stiff, and lively handling in addition to being fairly light (I'm talking about the SL 500 series OCLV frames. The SLRs are truly light frames) - Emonda was BUILT to descend balls out in the mountains. It also makes a pretty dandy Crit machine if you dabble in that disapline occasionally.

    1140 gr for a road bike frame.. is quite heavy. My Cube ~3500 EUR MTB has a frame weight of 1100gr. For a road bike frame in this price class I would expect a 850~900 gram frame.

    • @Jamesthebikeguy
      @Jamesthebikeguy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      850g disc brake frames are basically unobtanium. A few brands make them but it's truly expensive/hard to get one. Sub 1000g is the current frontier for top end Disc frames. Focused Ultralight ones like the S-Works Aethos get in to the 800s but remove any aero or compliance based tech

      17.48 pounds with reflectors, dork disc, tubes, oem tires, the bontreger saddle (my Selle itallia SLR is 100 grams lighter) uncut steerer and spacers to allow for it.
      I mean yeah, its not a featherweight - you want really light? You'll need to spend the coin for the 800 series SLR
      the stock build has some pork on it, they always do.
      First, obviously... you shitcan the reflectors and dork disc - that's around 120 grams.
      Go tubeless, with some tubeless ready high end tires and 50ml of sealant and shave off 100 grams per wheel. if tubeless isn't your thing, at least shitcan the heavy oem tubes, and tires. You'll still probably shave off 100g per wheel with some lightweight tubes, and serious rubber.
      run the lightweight saddle you probably already own, and knock off another 100 grams.
      Most of us probably have a carbon stem knocking around in the parts bin, that's another 50 grams at least...
      Then there is that uncut steer tube - if you don't need all of it, you can save a few grams by cutting it down and removing some spacers.
      (Oh, and you can probably find a lighter expansion plug in your box -o -parts... so throw that in and remove that tank of an expansion plug trek uses on the SL frames)
      There you go, I just saved you about a pound, maybe even a hair more and you probably didn't have to spend a thing to do it.
      16 - 16.5 pounds is pretty respectable for a size 56 "standard" frame road bike.
