    Technically, you aren't travelling on the shockwave from the nuke, as shockwaves require an atmosphere to propagate. What you're actually riding is the plasma debris, AKA fireball.

    • @DanStaal
      @DanStaal 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It's actually the most realistic way to get large payloads into orbit cheaply, and could be built with fairly old tech. It would be cheaper, easier, and safer than all of these ideas people are trying. (Arguably even than a space elevator.) It's just... slightly insane at the same time. ;)

    • @felixdumbravescu2725
      @felixdumbravescu2725 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheaper ? definitely, Easier ? If you disregard the lack of controll yeah, Safer ? i think launching off the face of earth with a nuclear explosion to launch you off ground aint the definition of safe for either the planet, its inhabitants or the crew. None the less more productive use then as intentional WMD.

    • @KottabosGames
      @KottabosGames  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      not to mention all that pesky radiation

    • @DanStaal
      @DanStaal 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Easier to build and implement than most of the other options that still require some form of unobtanimum. (Other than chemical rockets, which are expensive and can't lift much.) The lack of control can be worked around - you've got plenty of mass budget for areodynamics and RCS. And the initial study did comment that there would be remarkably little fallout - the bombs are very small, and would be optimized for thrust, both of which limit that. And because you have a high mass fraction and TWR, you can afford to situate your launch base where it's limited further and choose non-optimal trajectories.

  • @DirkDwipple

    I'm here for your yellow cake uranium and spent nuclear fuel rods. We're building a spaceship,be quick about it.

  • @McCbobbish
    @McCbobbish 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    With this baby, we could've had atomic space battleships in the 60's. Probably not a good idea, but I can't help but daydream about it.

    • @McCbobbish
      @McCbobbish 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also: is there any way to bring along the different sized pulse units (bombs) and switch between them in flight? Because that's what the historical designs were supposed to do. They would start with small bombs and move up to the bigger ones as they got higher in the atmosphere (because nukes have less power in thin atmosphere) as well as using the small ones for more delicate amounts of thrust.

    • @Shinzon23
      @Shinzon23 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      McCbobbish there was... ironically,Coca-Cola was contracted to handle that aspect of the drive.

      Yep, there's a right click menu off the engine. Atmo boost to the kN is also modeled. After watching the video, I added some user guide stuff to the forum topic in a mad rush. :D
      I strongly recommend only using one pulse unit yield at a time.

    • @dogmaticpyrrhonist543
      @dogmaticpyrrhonist543 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, the loading systems. And Coke was called in to consult due to their familiarity with vending machines. They weren't really contracted, as nothing was ever built.

    Those pylons are probably huge pistons acting as shock absorbers.

    • @dogmaticpyrrhonist543
      @dogmaticpyrrhonist543 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They're the outside shroud for the pistons. If they weren't there, the "legs" on the pusher plate poke up through the part every time a nuke goes off. You're *supposed* to cover them up with more loader floors.

    • @TheGavote

      It's great with the G effects enabled in KSP. The little "blacking out now" meter jumps up for each kerbanaut and then drops back, and repeats

      @danielkorladis7869 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

  • @gracej79
    @gracej79 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    IAFAIK, the larger version is intended to be used with the Convair Nexus mod by the same author. Use the Nexus as SSTO and the Orion as an interplanetary second stage.

    • @dogmaticpyrrhonist543
      @dogmaticpyrrhonist543 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The first designs were sea-level launched. But clearly they thought about lofting and did some studies on what would be required. So the 86foot (which is pretty much the Orion Battleship size) would have been lofted by the larger Nexus (Convair and General Atomics were both owned by the same company). The 10m was developed to sell to NASA who had just sunk buckets of money and effort into the Saturn V.

    • @archdornan4389
      @archdornan4389 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Chemically launching an Orion is like using a horse to get your car up to 15mph before engaging the engine.
      The atmosphere adds free working mass to each explosion and thus boosts ISP

    • @dogmaticpyrrhonist543
      @dogmaticpyrrhonist543 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Arch Dornan yes, but only when you ignore the cluster nuking of the launch site. And that in the mid 60s, NASA had just spent buckets of money on the Saturn.

    An interesting mod, useful for the interstellar mods. The bigger engine could get you to 0.1 speed of light, or more.

  • @densylek8779
    @densylek8779 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    for info: the orion project was from nasa and was for nuclear propulsion proposed by us military where the nuclear bombs would be pushed onto the pad, turned into plasma via filter which makes kinetic energy and continues, the orion wasn't able to launch on most things other than the super orion, a vehicle considered as an interstellar ark which contains millions of bombs in a magazine, since the idea was kind of dumber somebody higher in intelligence (sorta) made the medusa one which had an anti-parachute like ability

  • @Neronix17

    It always shocks me that someone really thought this would be a serious method of propulsion, and it shocks me even more that it sort of works in reality.

    • @McCbobbish
      @McCbobbish 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Neronix17 It was dreamt up by a lot of the scientists who had a hand in designing nuclear weapons in the first place. They were hoping to find a peaceful use for the terrible thing they had made. Unfortunately, they began to run out of funding and were forced to go to the Air Force. The USAF wanted a space battleship capable of leveling continents. Supposedly JKF was shown a scale model of it and was so horrified that he told the USAF to cut their funding. The funny thing, is that the team who made it really just wanted to go on a grand cruise of the solar system. They never wanted to make it into a weapon.

    • @Neronix17
      @Neronix17 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I know the background of it (I watch far too many documentaries), just always seems so bizarre to use such crazy explosives as propulsion, it's the equivalent of a rocket jump in Halo.

    • @badbeardbill9956
      @badbeardbill9956 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      What's even more shocking is that the USAF wanted to ACTUALLY BUILD IT. Not even joking, they were willing to put over a billion dollars for development, nearly 20% of their space budget...
      This is a serious method of propulsion. It bypasses the problem of heat containment.
