I don’t get the hate for the size (in the comments sections of all the first looks, not the light observation by Ted). Nikon makes smaller 35s, and they make big 1.2s which are optically corrected and excellent performers. If you need size, get the 1.8 or the 1.4. If you need the 1.2, this is a large but not enormous ones. It’s important to note that a lot of modern Nikon glass is large in size but not overly heavy. This lens at ~1000g is only 300g heavier than the Leica SL 35 APO that Ted mentioned. My 14-24/2.8 and 105/2.8 macro are also pretty big lenses that don’t weigh as much as they look like they would.
Sony can definitely make that chunk of a lens smaller
@@JessDemant with more flaws, yes.
@@ngtamphuong No with pure engineering. There's no denying that Nikon lenses are huge.
@@JessDemant What are the specs for the Sony 35mm 1.2?
@@gidigidaare we going to act like Sony lenses don’t require more computational correction? The Sony 50 1.2 is smaller lighter, but that results in more distortion, more vignette, and Sony had to create ‘focus breathing compensation’ setting so it’s acceptable to use it during video.
Sony embraces computational corrections because it allows for smaller lighter lenses. Nikon still seems to pursue the highest optical quality while giving up the size and weight reductions.
I do think there is a fine balance, that Sony seems to be perfecting. Nikon will probably adjust their approach in future.
I've been waiting a long time for this, the price hurts, but it's absolutely worth it. The weight/size are also a worthy tradeoff for the incredible performance it offers.
Great early review! Looking forward to more Nikkor lens reviews! 😊
Nice, I love Nikkors. Dropped one in the dirt once. That dirty Nikkor was still my favorite.
Oooh finally. I am waiting for this lens few years. I used 35 f1.4G - Haruo Sato design and it was my favourite lens for 10 years. Finally true succesor of 35mm lineup. I used 35/85mm o F-mount almost every wedding and event and now I am using 28 F1.4E and Z50mm F1.2, which suit my needs better. After a while I have to say that 28mm is little bit better if you can use advantage this FOV, but 35mm lens is more versatile one lens setup. Thank you Nikon, I'm doing preorder!
Haruo Sato is the man. I've got an interview with him that will be coming soon ;-)
Stunning images 😍 I’ve been waiting for this lens for what seems like an eternity and can’t wait to add this to my collection. I think this will be a very good addition to my event photography projects 😀
Great review! Love that one at 5:29 behind the horses!
I've been wondering about comparing the 35mm f/1.8 at 1.8 to the 35mm f/1.2 at f/1.2. I haven't seen anyone online talking about that yet. You partially answered for me since I saw the depth of field so much greater when going from f/1.2 to f/1.2 on this lens. Thanks for a great review. The 1.2s are off the table for me as I see myself as a committed amateur rather than a pro.
glad to hear of the increased content on Nikon coming up
As a hobbyist, I have zero business with this lens....but I MUST have it!!!
I know that 35 and 28 are close but fundamentally different focal lengths - I use the excellent 28 1.4E lens adapted to my Nikon bodies and it produces brilliant images. As you consider exploring what is possible with these hyper bright and optically near perfect new batches of Z mount lenses, a nod to the possibilities with adapted legacy lenses and the artistic choices that come with choosing how you want an image to render based on your choice of glass would be an interesting topic to explore. I love both looks, but when I pack my bag, I have to decide between the two often (135 1.8 vs 105 1.4 / 50 1.8 vs 58 1.4 / 20 1.8 vs 28 1.4. Love what you do, and I am always interested in gear, but your videos stand out when highlight artistic choices inherent in the gear we choose to use. :)
I like your photos! 👍🏼
Very nice pictures! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I would like to see the rendering of this lens vs the Leica summilux 35 1.4 FLE........i found despite the large optical elements on S line lenses from nikon a certain look and beautiful 3D rendering.
what do you think ?
I personally see some sort of depth in nikon z lenses, it's definitely not as flat as most modern canon lenses, just my opinion.
The lens alone is heavier than a m body with the summilux fle
Don't listen these sellouts, there is absolutely no 3D rendering in this lens as there is no in the Plena. Same shit with 85 1.2. Overpriced plastic lifeless tubes... the 1.4 versions are actually having it for 5 times less price... no logic 😂😂
The vintage Nikkor 105mm f2.5!!
Id shoot that on my FE2 with some delta 3200 here anyday
Great review. I would like to see 180mm f/2.8 D lens.
Servus Ted. Thank you for you great video(s). At min 3:30 there is no chromatic aberation on neon / LED light. However sunlight contains much more UV light and IR light that would possibly causing trouble on 1.2 rather then the emitted restricted weavelengths of artificial light. How does the lens perforn outside in natrual light? Best regards.
For those who said the size is too big , I can almost sure of 35mm f1.2 can never be small with autofocus and weather sealing and great optical performance, we can never defeat physics.
Unless , you make a not so good lense but pair with in camera profile to correct it .
Gorgeous. Making me consider my life choices. 😭😭😭
gorgeous photos.
The one at 05:00 is wonderful!
I clicked immediately!!
Great video. How does it balance on the zf?
The only question I want answered is is it better than the 35mm SL APO?
I hope you can try it with Z8 or Z9 so we can understand how it performs with more megapixels!
Thanks
Great video and great news you are going to focus on Nikon this year 🙏🙏
Hello, it look good to my. Time to make more room in my bag or just get a bigger bag.
Is it possible to provide the large JPGs or RAWs from this video/session? Maybe more? Thank you!
Very nice shots! Lens is amazing but Your colours fits well to overall feeling. ❤ Are those your presets or custom camera profiles? I saw you used Kodak E100G High contrast for some of them as a basis. I'm looking for good basis for my Zf shots.
Great video as always...that being said, that price point is going to keep a lot of buyers at an arm's length! $3K USD (after taxes) for a Nikkor lens is flat out MADNESS!!! It's just another example is to why I simply will NOT be giving up my DSLR any time soon...if ever! 🤔
Hiya Ted, I would like to hear about your favorite vintage Nikon lenses for a future video!
The best 35mm I personally ever used was the Sony GM 35mm 1.4
I am curious how these two lenses compare.
The size, the weight, the cost confirm that choosing mft camera and oly 17mm f/1.2 was the right decision.
You’ve been waiting for Nikon to announce this lens to confirm your Olympus set up was the right decision? What a strange way to choose a camera system.
OH HOW I LOVE THAT NIKON IS STEPP ON NECKS...LOL
if you're not doing film the TAMRON 35mm 1.4 is OUTSTANDING... I just can't pull the trigger on a 35mm so long as this TAMRON is getting it done
This lens looks amazing. Dare I say it - has that Leica look.
Where is the Tony and Chelsea review huh huh
lol, f’ing RIDICULOUS. It looks like a 70-200. I learned my lesson decades ago, 1972…with a 58mm f/1.2. Great results, HEAVY, expensive. And today, unlike then, complete overkill…because of insane ISO ranges available, unlike THEN. F/1.4-1.8 is great! And nobody looked at a shot and said…It would’ve been better at 1.2. The ONLY thing that matters is…the shot.
Ted, if you’re going to be looking at lenses this year, I would be very interested in your opinion of Nikon’s tilt shift lens compared to the Canon tilt shift. I’m a Nikon shooter, but I understand that Canon might have the better tilt shift?
This lens is way too large for a 35mm Leica’s 35mm Summilux is smaller. You’re right about the size of a tele lens.
Seems like a magical lens.
But for my purposes as a hobby portrait & street photographer it's just too big & heavy.
f/1.4 lenses seem to be the perfect compromise between low light/bokeh & size/weight IMO.
Compare:
Canon RF 35mm f1.4 weighing in at only 555g [1.2lbs] with a 67mm filter thread
VS
This f1.2 Nikon lens weighing 1060g [2.3 lbs] with a 82mm filter thread.
But for the pro that couldn't care less about size, weight or price, this f1.2 Nikon is really something special.
Great explanation. Thanks
Damn that's bigger than the old Sigma lenses
And optically superior, too.
@@RobertFalconer1967yeah nikon can make a perfect len with unlimited siZe😂
@@vanlee0831 It's a grown up's lens. That is if you can handle the weight.
@@RobertFalconer1967 Of course, just surprised by how large it is
They are actually both almost exactly the same length and weight (1096g vs 1080g and 150mm vs 140mm)
No es el primero!!! 50 ,1,2 85 1,2 estaban antes. Ahora han completado la trilogía con este 35 1,2 y es la primera marca en tener los tres
Having Summilux 35mm f/1.4 FLE II I can't understand how it possible to use so massive and big lens))
Totally agree
But these lenses and bodies are not meant for casual street photography or journalism, sir. These are for professionals who desire the top most image quality.
@@ngtamphuong Agree
Jesus $2800 usd. But damn it looks good
There will be a Viltrox 35 mm 1.2 the next months. Just telling…
Thank god it's so small🤦🏼♂
My 50mm f1.2AiS is smaller than its mount!!!
A ridiculously heavy and bulky lens that doen't need to exist. Definitely not for my travel/street kit. Too much weight used up in carryon bag. The 40mm f2 makes much more sense in pretty much all spec parameters. And I haven't even mentioned price yet.
This is a very hard lens to produce.
It's only dear devils like sigma and tamron that dare to produce it.
I am not sure what 1.2 for a 35mm is good for. To me its not worth the size and the price 35 mm are no bokee lenses
ya. 40-50 mm in F/1.4 is about all i ever need. 35mm or wider.... f/2.8 is just fine
Damn, the size of that thing LOL. Nikon must HATE correcting in camera big oof
They *do* hate correcting in camera. Remember, they've always been an optical company first and foremost, so their philosophy is to get it done properly inside the lens and not rely on software in the camera.
I actually prefer this.
A huge benefit of designing the lens correctly is its great for video use. Once we get RED cameras with Z mount, you'll see Z glass used a ton because its so well corrected
@@brandonklemets here's hoping we get an af-d adapter for z first! lol
That seems to be their goal, almost all of their lenses are big but have little to no focus breathing, chromatic aberration, distortion, etc.
It's absolutely not a 35 mm.. It's another simple example the photography market is a clear SCAM. D.
7:21 not really...let's be real & add the taxes + shipping, so this lens is absolutely $3k-something...which wow 😳🤑
I can justify the lens purchase & the price tag, BUT I'm gonna wait & see what Viltrox does with their LAB series...
Dirty channels are the best.
Cows taste better in a plate than through a Nikon. Another plot against Nikon.
Nice lens, but for a 35mm it’s to big like 50mm. Nikon give Sigma there license, they make excellent lenses.
$2800 for a f/1.2 and $600 for a f/1.4. Yikes. That 1/3 stop sure costs a bunch.
It’s not just about a 1/3 of a stop of light, the 1.2 is optically superior in every way and it is also physically constructed better.
Till viltrox f1.2 triplets arrival.
Not too big/heavy on the ZF ? looks out of balance ...
I don't get who this is for or even what it's for. If you're really looking for 1.2 bokeh 35mm is too wide for portraits since the point of 35mm is to get the background context into the shot not to blur it. You're not going want to get in close with a wide angle anyway because of distortion & the 50mm f/1.2 will already give you that, just step back a couple feet if need be. You also mentioned the vignette issue....& if I need to stop down to f.2 to eliminate that what's the point of paying $2800 for an f/1.2? The 85mm f/1.2 would easily be my pick for that. This is too big for street photography, too wide for most wedding stuff unless you want a group shot & can't step back at all, which is why they make the 24-70mm f/2.8 zoom, which comes in $800 below this. The only real application I can think of would be to shoot indoor sports like a basketball game & you want to isolate the action but catch the wider context anyway. That's a way too narrow function for that kind of money IMO.
I can see this lens being used for concerts, 35mm is the perfect focal length for environmental portraits and when shooting concerts the photographer is usually free to roam the stage to compose
Wow! This looks very similar to the Sigma 35 1.2...
For sure a phantastic lens.
But , who will buy this ? I think not many ! Too expensive and too big and heavy.
So why then ?
They should have come out with a great 16-35mm 2.8 which is the most versatile wide angle pro zoom, and the other manufacturers do really good ones , Sony is the best probably with it's MKII version. I really think about getting that and adapting.
For me it is disappointing that Nikon let that versatile zoom drop from their lensmap for Z lenses !
Sony can definitely make that chunk of a lens smaller 🤣
Sony can't 1.2 tho
@@lazerklien5037 no, but when it comes it will be smaller, that's a fact 😉
I’m sure Nikon could make the lens smaller as well. Engineering and marketing require trade-offs. Sigma came up with nearly the same size lens years ago at this focal length and aperture.
Once again, Nikon didn’t get the memo with regardings to size/weight, most Nikon shooters are not power lifters. Shooting with a BAZOOKA is frowned upon in public setting.
It'll be ok you can handle it.
Did it HAVE to be THAT enormous?!
Jealous much Canon fanboy? Writing the same comment everywhere.
Not if you'd prefer it to be optically inferior.
There are smaller lenses, still, pretty fast, if you’re after lightweight. This is a professional lens, with very few compromises in quality. Pros are not concerned about the minor weight-tradeoff if they can have the images one could have with these fast lenses.
Buy it if it is useful for you, if not, you have other 35mm options in the a Nikon eco-system, or, there are other ecosystems with lighter 35mm lenses. If you’re after a quality 35 f1.2 though, at this point in time, this is it.
Every lens design has compromises. The f/1.2 Nikon primes are optically excellent for the compromise of being large. Sony's 50mm f/1.2 compromise is it is actually a 46-48mm lens. Canon gave up some optical perfection for size and focus breathing. If you want a smaller 35mm f/1.2 you have to give up something, you can't cheat here.
@codebunnies Exactly. Unless you remove the autofocusing and make it a manual lens. Then you can make it smaller. But you can't have near perfection and everything in it and have it be tiny. It's not a Tardis.
