Amanda is the queen of committing to the bit. She always goes 100 percent on her characters. She did a couple songs in their second musical episode that I loved so much. You should check out some of their Idiot's Present episodes they did. Like Damien's giving someone an exorcism was really good or Tommy and Amanda doing an award show. They're basically giving a presentation without knowing what the presentation is about and have to just go with what the slides say and adapt.
Also that series is kind of similar to something TomSka did for two #CONTENTs and a livestream called The Presentation Game. It is also similar to a game in one of the Jackbox Party Packs.
I totally agree! The "Idiots Presents" videos, especially the exorcism one and the one Damien did with Jackie, are two of my favorite improv videos from Smosh besides try not to laugh!
FYI Angela actually has worked/does work in a musical theatre group and I know musical theatre and musical improv are different but it’s pretty sick she has professional experience in musicals
Love this. I actually think that when Angela couldn't find a rhyme for "burpees" she decided to corpse on purpose because that's a really "Angela" thing to do and fits the running joke that she does things out of pocket. Chanse saying "Angela" is actually a way of supporting the corpsing because it's providing a straight man's (har har) reaction to the corpsing. I see that a lot in Chanse and Angela's dynamic. At least that's my theory 😆
I said this on the actual Smosh video, but God is Josh talented on the keys and guitar! He was in the same improv group as Chanse and Angela and I think it really does show. Majority of these bits wouldn't work without his intuition!! So glad you mentioned him.
Damian is my favorite cast member, but musical TNTL is where he shines brightest. He is always brilliant. That bit made me watch Hereditary and made me feel better for seeing it as a comedy. They are all great though. This is one of my favorite TNTL over all. The musicals and the prop tart eps are always gonna be excellent. The latest prop tart ep would be my next suggestion. I don't know much improv content outside Smosh. Maybe Dropout?
the hereditary one is so evil to me like it's so good it regularly gets stuck in my head for ENTIRE DAYS at a time it drives me insane it's just always there playing in the background of my mind
Some of Dropout's improv stuff is really interesting, particularly Play It By Ear (musical improv) and Game Changer (game show format that includes a lot of improv prompts)
I was so happy to see Damien's Hereditary bit. It's one of my all time favorites from TNTL. As for other recommendations, I'd mentioned this on an earlier video, but some of the stuff Dropout has done would be great. I'm assuming we'd wanna stay on stuff not behind a paywal, so keeping with the theme of muscial improv, The Official Cast Recording from Game Changer is an excellent show of the Play It By Ear/Off Book team's improv talent. And of course taking any episode of Make Some Noise would do fantastically
Yesss the shakespeare episode from game changer was really wild to me. the episode only on dropout but they have a clip of one of the prompt on youtube
I think people point out Smosh a lot because they’re one of the big channels that still do improv stuff. However, I do have some suggestions other than Smosh. You could react to Whose Line since you mentioned it and I think it’s a good medium to learn about improv, Good Mythical Morning with Rhett and Link do musical improv sometimes (I like when they sing songs but to a different genre), Just Roll With It is a Disney show with improv elements, and if you wanna do the rap thing Harry Mack is an incredible freestyle rapper who comes up with rhymes on the fly.
@@Electronnic i thought "play it by ear" was a spin-off of "make some noise" (itself coming from "game changer") but yeah i just want to second this idea
Something non-Smosh that I'd recommend is the Very Important People mock interview series! They deck out some well-known improv comedians in absurd or hilarious makeup and then they interview them as they play a character. It's incredible
Appreciate the Damien love. He's just super quick in general, so it was no surprise to me to see him nail these bits. Thanks for reacting to these TNTLs, by the by...came across them randomly, and I appreciate your perspective!
Yeah Angela loves harmonizing . I don’t know about this one besides her joining Chanse, but in the other musical episode you can hear her harmonizing with someone offscreen (I think Chanse again) 😂
Dropout has great stuff with make some noise. And for more musical improv they have an episode of game changer called welcome to mount port that I think it would be fun to see you react to
Also the Kareoke Night Game Changer, and everything they've done on Play It By Ear which Welcome to Mountport was basically a pilot for. I'd also point to A Game Most Changed, which as far as I can tell exists because Sam Reich wanted to showcase the Improvised Shakespeare Company's talent.
5:30 These bits are somewhat directed, and they preset the music Josh is going to play based on what they're singing (at least a genre) Josh still doesn't know what they're going to say in the moment

Love your videos!❤ idk if it would still count as Smosh but Angela is a part of a long form improv podcast that I really like called ‘Artists on Artists on Artists on Artists’. Either way I can’t wait to see what you do next❤
A somewhat obscure improv show from a few years ago is "Choose Our Destiny" by the Tin Can Bros. The episodes are uploaded on youtube and the format was basically improv-ing short (musical) plays where the audience gets to vote on certain aspects of the story and the cast has to incorporate it. Highly recommend it, it's wacky and nonsenical and usually goes off the rails by the end! I'd say my favorite episode is the fifteenth episode, sleepover slasher
Totally seconding Choose Our Destiny! I have literally had to stop episodes and come back later cause I was laughing so hard I gave myself a headache! And Sleepover Slasher is also probably my favorite! I also think Holiday Fun Ride is an incredible episode so its up there for me
Great video! Just got done watching your other smosh reactions and then this one was 11 minutes ago, lucky timing for me! I know you're not just reacting to smosh, looking forward to whatever is next :)
Please please please react to the Dropout (formerly College Humor) show Game Changer, specifically season 4, episode 5, “Original Cast Recording,” otherwise known as Welcome to Mountport.
Was just about to suggest this but thought to check the comments first. Great to see someone else was thinking of this. Another Dropout series music wise would be Make Some Noise Or the sound boys episode of game changer
omg! a great thing to react to might be some of the karaoke episodes of Game Changer on Dropout. Wayne Brady is actually in an episode! A lot of Make Some Noise features some really good improv stuff, and they also have a show that is solely about every episode being a completely improvised musical called Play it By Ear.
I just went onto your channel to check out your other videos and you only have 5. I was expecting to see a hundred at least. Your videos seem well establish and like you've been doing this for years. Awesome.
I love these videos! The reunions they used to do on their main channel was sooo funny (especially the teletubbies one), they are more structured and honestly really impressive.
I would really love to see you react to their most recent musical TNTL. The vocals were incredible, especially the Chanse and Damien song. And Amanda’s Succession song lol
I love these videos, cause i love smosh and really enjoy improv and learning more and seeing someone dissect what goes into these silly productions is very fulfilling
I' m so sad. this is the last of 6 videos of yours i get. i've got a big sad in my heart that can only be solved by you making more videos in this vein. Please don't stop. This is awesome!
Angela’s cracks me up every time just cause she couldn’t find a word. And her face in the beginning omg lol Also, you should definitely do the second one they did not that long ago.
I've already seen a bunch of people mentioning Play It By Ear on Dropout, but I haven't seen as many folks suggest that you react to Off Book with Zach and Jess. They did a live show at the Curious Comedy Theater that's on TH-cam, and it's one of my favorite pieces of musical improv I've ever seen. I know it might be tougher to react to longform stuff, but I'd certainly recommend watching it even if you don't end up making a reaction video.
I highly recommend watching videos where they have to be in character the entire time. Like the throwing darts competitions or the "The Chosen's play moose master"
23:26 In case anyone wants to know, in the world of composition, this is sometimes referred to as "Call and Response". It's used in a lot of film scores, and especially any given motif. Start two lines the same and follow it up differently each time. Not all compositions use it, but much like with rhyming lyrics, it's a simple way to make something both good and catchy in a short amount of time.
You should really take a look at some of Dropout's stuff! They have a show called "Make some noise" which is all improv and they also have "Play it by ear" which is musical improv stories. They have a great cast of improvisers. Another thing they do is loads of D&D which showcases a load of their great improv skills
They do more musical improv in a stream in preparation for the Smosh sleepover live on Smosh Pit. It’s only a 5-10 minute segment so idk if a full video on it would work, but the songs are generally a bit longer
Harry mack who is maybe the greatest freestyle rapper talks about what you did in the video and he calls it "setup punchline" where instead of going for the word and then panicking for a rhyme you have a word you want to get to and keep going until you find words to rhyme with it before hand
If you ever want to look at more musical improv, Dropout has a great series called Play It By Ear! Sadly most of them (including my favourite, Cornhole in One) are behind a paywall, but there are free episodes on their TH-cam channel. In general a lot of Dropout content would be great to see reactions to as the improv in shows like Make Some Noise and Gamechanger are also brilliant
I'm very interested in any tutorial videos you could make about improv or footage of you improvising. You have a gift for explaining things clearly and succintly.
It's been mentioned but for more musical improv, Dropout, Gamechanger episode, official cast recording - although it's behind a paywall. But any make some noise ep or play it by ear (musical improv) is just, improv. Would recommend!
the way you reacted when you realized damien was singing about hereditary was the same way i reacted, lol. as a suggestion, there's a sci-fi improv podcast called Mission to Zyxx that you may find interesting to talk about. each episode has a different guest as a character, some reoccuring, so the overarching storyline isn't ultra complicated like some sci-fi stuff. they have a live reading of the first episode as a special thing they did during quarantine. there's also the Hey Riddle Riddle! podcast, which is 3 hosts who are relatively famous improvers who answer riddles... or, uh, avoid answering the riddles. they make some very nsfw jokes sometimes (nothing offensive or hateful, unless about themselves), but they have tons of excellent bits. they have "best of (year)" episodes, which would be great for you to check out to see if youd like to discuss them!
I was waiting to see Hereditary the entire video. My absolute favorite bit and has stuck with me ever since. I’ve never even watched the movie! Made me want to though
I know people are asking for a lot of reactions but, as someone with little to no experience with improv, i would like to know more on how to master it. As in, how can i do improv without it being forced and stuff like that. Maybe a video with advice or tips or maybe techniques for beginners would be amazing!
Fun fact about Josh, he was previously/maybe still might be? affiliated with popular TH-cam musical troupe, Team Starkid! Definitely recommend checking them out!!!!
If you listen closely to Chanse as he walks away he says “I’ll make them huge and puny” which I’m convinced he was gonna rhyme with “Carmen and Juni,” the main characters from the film.
I can’t believe you skipped over a lot of the episode! Keith’s “I’m a bride” and Chanse’s TjMaxx were absolutely iconic. Not to mention Amanda’s “I’m a king in this” and Courtney’s “Megan” songs. It’s as much a testament to Josh as it is the cast! He had to work on the fly, too.
If you want to look at more musical improv to react to specifically, I'd point to Play It By Ear on Dropout which are 35 minute or so improvised musicals. (Also the Game Changer episodes Original Cast Recording which is basically a backdoor pilot for Play It By Ear, and Karaoke Night which has a much simpler premise - "Pick a fake song from a real artist from our karaoke book and sing it")
If you’re looking for more content to react to, I’ve got a few suggestions: For musical improv, check out Off Book (the stage musical on TH-cam or their musical podcasts). They’re an incredibly talented group who have been doing musical improv for quite a while, so you may already know of them. They also had an episode of the Dropout series Game Changer, which then got spun off into another show on Dropout, called Play it by Ear. Those could be interesting to look into. The freestyle rapper Harry Mack might also provide another avenue to discuss improv concepts in music. His stuff is really impressive and I think it’d be cool to see an improviser break down what he’s doing. For non-musical improv, a lot of the rest of the stuff on Dropout might be fun to look into. There’s an improvised Shakespeare episode of Game Changer, and the show Very Important People is longer-form improv comedy, doing a lot of character building. There’s a whole lot of material on that platform, as well as free clips (and a few full episodes) on TH-cam.
i'm not sure if you're subscribed to them, but i would highly recommend anything from dropout's make some noise (closer to traditional improv), game changer's musical improv episode from season 4, anything from play it by ear (entirely musical improv), or even from their more recent series, very important people (h&mu-based improv)! all completely different showcases of improv that i think you might love too!
"you're not going to find people improvising songs to a backing track" except that you are, there were several episodes of Off Book recorded during covid lockdowns in which , because they couldn't be in a room together and there are delays over zoom, they used backing tracks to improvise to, they are particularly interesting episodes because of this added challenge
Since we are talking about musicals, I'd really like to see more people take a look at Game Changer's Official Cast Recording. It's a longer video but the story telling is so fun!
I'm glad you reacted to "Keep Dreaming" and "Hereditary". Chanse and Damien really are the MVP's of these episodes.

part 2 also has some bangers!
If you listen closely to Chanse as he walks away he says “I’ll make them huge and puny” which I’m convinced he was gonna rhyme with “Carmen and Juni,” the main characters from the film.
omg i never thought of that
I absolutely love this channel, I think you’ve found ur niche lol
I can’t believe you skipped over a lot of the episode! Keith’s “I’m a bride” and Chanse’s TjMaxx were absolutely iconic. Not to mention Amanda’s “I’m a king in this” and Courtney’s “Megan” songs. It’s as much a testament to Josh as it is the cast! He had to work on the fly, too.
If you want to look at more musical improv to react to specifically, I'd point to Play It By Ear on Dropout which are 35 minute or so improvised musicals. (Also the Game Changer episodes Original Cast Recording which is basically a backdoor pilot for Play It By Ear, and Karaoke Night which has a much simpler premise - "Pick a fake song from a real artist from our karaoke book and sing it")
you should react to some stuff from Shoot From The Hip, especially their long improv plays
Off Book has some improv musicals on TH-cam as well as their podcast. Would love to see you check those out
If you’re looking for more content to react to, I’ve got a few suggestions:
For musical improv, check out Off Book (the stage musical on TH-cam or their musical podcasts).
There’s a whole lot of material on that platform, as well as free clips (and a few full episodes) on TH-cam.
hey katelyn, smosh is having a pit and games break this week so ive been catching a few of these episodes!
i'm not sure if you're subscribed to them, but i would highly recommend anything from dropout's make some noise (closer to traditional improv), game changer's musical improv episode from season 4, anything from play it by ear (entirely musical improv), or even from their more recent series, very important people (h&mu-based improv)! all completely different showcases of improv that i think you might love too!
I’m sure you’ve already heard of them but Zach and Jess over at the Off Book podcast are the kings of improvised musicals
Spoilers: there's also video of me improvising songs to backing tracks. Hyperbole. ;)
Please please please do the second musical TNTL it's so good
Since we are talking about musicals, I'd really like to see more people take a look at Game Changer's Official Cast Recording. It's a longer video but the story telling is so fun!
burpees coulda turned into a Herpes joke
I was thinking he might have ate some Papa Murphy’s…
you need to see the other smoshn tntl musical 😭
I’d be interested to see what you thought of some of Shoot from the Hip’s stuff
