- You guys asked for it, so here it is. Trying to catch as many of the 386 Pokemon in Generation III is a bit of a nightmare, I wouldn't recommend trying it.

Lol that reminds me of when I was playing pokemon go at home a couple days ago: there are team go rocket balloons now to allow people to battle them away from pokestops, but they still have the same cheesy dialogue *about pokestops* so one of them drifts up to me and when I go to battle him he says something like "where do you think you're going, this pokestop belongs to team go rocket now!" And I'm just like "uhhhh this is my house 😂"

One thing to mention about Ho-oh and Lugia. They're considered event Pokemon in Gen 3, so TECHNICALLY you don't need them to complete the National Dex.
There's also another "strategy" to catching them all in gen 3. Remember how you said if you do Emerald + Ruby, you miss Lunatone and if you do Emerald + Sapphire, you miss Zangoose? Both Zangoose and Lunatone are available in XD. So you can also do:
2 playthroughs of Emerald + 1 Quick Reset for the last starter (you can get both Latias and Latios in Emerald, but only one per playthrough)
1 Playthrough of LeafGreen + 2 quick starter resets. (ONLY FOR THE SLOWPOKE LINE. The ONLY line in Gen 3 that's exclusive to one game.)
1 Playthrough of Colosseum.
1 Playthrough of XD.
Even then, Gen 3 is still IMO the most convoluted generation to complete the National Dex in.
but if you're resetting both emerald and LeafGreen then you'll need a third game to put all the pokemon on.
On the topic of XD, all of the Hoenn Pokémon normally unavailable in Emerald are catchable in the GCN games.
Roselia (Shadow) and Surskit (Poké Spot) are available in XD, and Meditite is available in both.
Though if you only use Emerald and the GCN games, you're still missing all Kanto starters, the two Hoenn starter lines you didn't pick, the Cleffa line, both Nidoran lines, the Slowpoke line, the Gastly line, the Onix line, the Krabby line, the Smoochum line, the Porygon line, all Kanto fossils, Mewtwo, (not counting Mew because lol Mythical; though there was that one event in Emerald), Unown, one of either Huntail or Gorebyss (you have to choose), and one of the Latis.
With the exception of Huntail/Gorebyss and the Latis, all of these can be obtained in Firered and Leafgreen, and you need both because of the fossils (unless you're fine doing a lot of resetting). You'll also have to reset one of them for the remaining Kanto starter, and I recommend you do it with FR, since you need LG to get Slowpoke. For the Hoenn holes, all you need is the opposite version of the Lati you chose in Emerald (Ruby if you chose Latias, Sapphire if you chose Latios), though unless you have both Ruby and Sapphire, you'll have to reset for the other Hoenn starter (make sure you trade away everything first).
And there you have it!

My cousin and I tried catching all of them from Gen 3 and below to complete the Hoenn National Dex; I played Sapphire, Firered, and Leafgreen, while he covered Ruby, Emerald, Colosseum, and XD (I didn't have a Gamecube). It was a pain, but we did it.
...so then he had the bright idea of trying to complete the Hoen National Dex again, but with as many shiny pokemon as possible. I also had many copies of Sapphire (my parents kept thinking I would lose them, when they were actually stashed away so nobody would ruin them) and my cousin had noticed that every Spinda had different spot patterns. So he said that while he did a Shinydex, he wanted me to catch *EVERY* possible spot patterned Spinda. I only agreed at the time because I had no idea how many there were.
I called it the Spindapocolypse.

If I remember correctly you can only trade FR/LG with the others after you've completed the side-quests with the ruby and the sapphire in the post-elite4-content so the tactic to reset LG multiple times to play only halfway through without FR shouldn't work.
This is correct, you have to help Celio develop a way to trade with the Hoenn region by collecting stuff around the Sevii Islands.

I mean, trading the stuff to a game that has the ability unlocked is possible, its not like you can't trade at all whatsoever, so just get the stuff from Fire Red onto Leaf Green when it has the quest done.
This was more about the part where he wanted to save on Firered and Emerald ( 21:50 ) to get them all and only play halfway through Leafgreen for fossils/starters, which doesn't enable him trading with Ruby/sapphire/Colosseum/XD.

I remember doing all this in prep for Gen 4 release. Good three month journey as a kid. I smiled most of this vid thinking back to how absurdly dedicated i was to a living dex back then. Still have them to this day. Replaced a bunch when HGSS and ORAS came out though.

This is funny timing, I actually started undertaking this at the beginning of the month and I currently have Completed Emerald, Purified all Pokemon on Colosseum and am about a third through FireRed and burnout has already begun to set in.

You know, the bit about the Gamecube titles made me realize that to avoid some resets in RBY: you -could- play Pokemon Stadium 1, beat the Elite 4 and Rival in the Gym Leader Castle and get rewarded one of the 3 starters/one of the 2 Hitmon/one of the 2 Fossils/an Eevee.
Its not easy, and a bit random...but it's an option ^_^

I remember completing the gen 3 pokedex. I ended up buying shiny gold which was an old pokemon gold/silver fan remake that people put onto cartridges. Used that to get the 2 Johto starters and got the 3rd from completing the Hoenn pokedex, then from completing Fire Red and Leaf Green as well I was able to complete the national dex. Wouldn't ever do it again on gen 3.
Welp no Wonder my emerald dex is missing alot of Pokemon. Back when I was a kid with over 500 game hours i got to 70%. For Pokemon Moon i only needed 100 hours to Have all dexes 100%. It is my first game where I managed to get a 100% Complete dex and iam 25 now

Back in the day I managed to get all but one of the jhoto starters, jirachi ho-oh and lugia. I did it through the trading onto emerald method of getting jhoto starters. It was the most tedious thing ive ever done in a pokemon game. I'm still trying to muster up the effort to trade all the pokemon again for the final starter.

Here is something trolling I realized, even though you get espeon and umbreon in colosseum they are guaranteed to be male and since you couldn’t get ditto it was impossible to get eevee until fire red and leaf green

I think your math was off. You stated that you could not catch the 2 starter lines, as well as Lileep and Cradily. That's 8 pokemon. However, the onscreen counter went down to 194, not 192.
I’ve noticed a flaw with your RSE reasoning. You actually do have to play either Ruby or Sapphire through the Hall of Fame because in Emerald, you only get one of either Latios or Latias. If you picked Latios, you have to have played through Sapphire completely, and if you picked Latias, you have to play Ruby completely.

Technically you could get a Jirachi through another completely legitimate method. If you had Pokemon Channel you were able to send a Jirachi over to one of your RSE games through a link cable connecting your gamecube to your gameboy after you finished the Channel game and this did not require a pre-order. It's a huge pain, but it is doable through proper methods. Other than that, great video! I love watching these catch em alls!
Is Channel compatible with Emerald? I know the Colosseum bonus disc isn't.
One funny thing about Fire Red and Leaf Green is that if you only play one of the two, you can actually catch one more Pokémon in Leaf Green. Marill and Azumarill are exclusive to LG while Wooper and Quagsire are exclusive to FR, however you can breed in LG to obtain Azurill, giving you one extra mon over FR.
azurill and wynaught are also the only hoenn pokemon available in fr/lg. this means wynaught is the only hoenn pokemon you can obtain in firered.

I did it, I completed the hoenn dex in emerald and got a johto starter. And now to descecnd into complete madness. YES, I am going to reset and trade my living dex back into emerald two more times to get the other two. I've lost quite a bit a sleep already, and I'm ready to do it all over again...

I don't think anyone else had mentioned with the Pokemon Colosseum part, but another way to purify the Pokemon was to give them cologne to smell. So, as you're playing the game and trying to purify other pokemon and getting more money, the cologne is a good investment on the side to speed up the pace but quite a bit of money.
Overall, this whole process was something I did when I was in middle school, but with the mindset of playing through everything and having fun instead of just finishing the pokedex! (It also helped that my sister got the other version whenever they came out, too.)

Just got my second johto starter from emerald, only one more playthrough needed. To be honest, wasn't that bad. I only traded over pokemon that evolve after lv 35, so yeah
You can get lileep after the main campaign. You go to fallarbor town into the fossil maniac house, there will be a tunnel you can enter. Reach the end and the fossil you didn't choose will be there.(after triggering a cutscenes)

I actually played Emerald and all Hoen pokemon to unlock the gen 2 starters from the professor. Happiest I ever felt for a pokemon game.

I’ve been playing through catching ‘em all in gen 3 using this as a general guide after doing gens 4 and 5, and there’s a couple things that unfortunately make the task harder. Namely, you can’t trade between Kanto and Hoenn games until you beat the Sevii islands, and you can’t get both Latis in Emerald. This basically just means you’d have to do the Sevii Islands in the FR/LG that you beat all the way through and play the Mt. Pyre R/S up past the elite four to catch the other Lati. So that probably adds 10-15 hours (probably faster, I just play slowly) to the overall gen 3 catch em all.

The reason Gen 2 had more Pokemon then gen 3 was because new hardware meant everything had to be remodeled.
The Jump from Game Boy to Game Boy Color, just meant everything had to be colored. The jump from color to advance was much more challenging.
I imagine the Switch will also have this same issue for it's first Pokemon game.

For Deoxys the only way to get it is by getting the special ticket event, it's supposed to be sharable if someone still has it.
For Celebi, only with the Japanese bonus disc of Pokemon Colosseum, transfer it to a Jp Pokemon GBA game and trade it. Or if you're lucky, find a guy who has the OT 10ANIV Celebi that was released on the US.
For Mew in Emerald, get the ticket of it, I think this one is also shareable with wireless if you know someone that has it.
For Ho-oh, Lugia, you can get another event ticket that is also shareable via wireless in FR/LG/Em.
For Lati@s, you can get the Eon Ticket on eBay and the eReader accessory so you can just catch it in one run.
Fun fact: If you have every game except LeafGreen, the only Pokemon you can’t get is the Slowpoke line.
Even funner fact, you can catch every pokemon in gen 3 with Colosseum, XD, Leafgreen and Emerald, (Youll need a lot of resets though)

I built a living Dex on Fire Red long before I heard of the term about a decade ago. I managed to get Mew during an event and Celebi from a trade and so I had 384 registered Pokedex entries in Fire Red.
My friend traded all his Pokemon back and forth to and from Emerald to get all three Johto starters. Sometimes you get spare time after you graduate high school.
I caught every single Pokémon in emerald without cheats. The only person in my country (Grenada) to ever do it. I never ever expected that I could have accomplished it but I did after yearsss of play and meeting people.
Shortly after accomplishing that feat, someone restarted my game. Still heartbroken to this day.
You forgot about Pokémon Channel. It is basically a supercasual game aimed at children too young for the main series. The gameplay boils down to watch television shows with your Pokémon in your house. Once you finished everything you can transfer a Jirachi (I believe this was the only possibility in Europe).
The best way is using Emerald as your base, completing it and catching everything you can in it. Then you need to trade one starter from Ruby or Sapphire, and reset it to complete to get the last starter, Latios/Latias (the one you didn't get in Emerald) and any Pokémon you can't get in Emerald (Surskit, Meditite, Roselia, Zangoose/Lunatone). You have to complete Colosseum and XD which give you almost anything else. The Kanto part is the most difficult one. You either have to get 2 copies of LeafGreen, or one copy of each, or just 1 copy of LeafGreen and a lot of time. If you have 2 games, you have to complete LeafGreen to be able to trade with the others, and just reset the other game 2 times to get the other starters and the fossil. If you only have 1 LG, you need to complete the game 3 times to trade with Emerald. But LG is essential because it's the only game that has the Slowpoke line. And appart from the starters, the fossils and Mewtwo, the only lines exclusive to Kanto are: Nidoran (both), Clefairy, Gastly, Onix, Krabby, Jynx, Porygon and Unown.
So it's possible to complete the Dex with only Emerald, Sapphire, Colosseum, XD and LeafGreen, but having a second Kanto game (any of the two) makes the process much easier.
You actually would need to play through both FireRed and LeafGreen to do the starter resets. You're not allowed to trade with other games aside from the Kanto remakes before you complete the Sevii Islands side quest. So you would need to reset LeafGreen for the starter, trade it to a completed version of FireRed, and then trade that over to whatever game you're doing the completed national dex in.
I'm sure someone else already mentioned it, but I ran into this issue while doing my living dex, so I thought I'd mention.
Yeah this is really annoying. Actually all the FR version exclusives are obtainable in Colosseum and Gale of Darkness, only the second fossil isn't. That means you still need a FR up to the 5th gym for surf and a quick reset for the third starter, then you can trade all the version exclusives to a complete LG.
Ho-oh, Lugia and Deoxys are possible to catch within FR and LG, and Ho-oh, Lugia, Deoxys and Mew are possible to catch within Emerald, if you have the e-reader cards for their events. The same with getting the second Eon Pokemon in any Hoenn game. You have to beat the E4 to access these events.
Celebi is a bit trickier, Celebi can also be gotten from Colosseum by purifying all the shadow Pokemon, but you require the Japanese bonus disk to get it.

The thing about Emerald being the hub game is good, but I have a better idea if you don't have a GameCube:
1. Use either Ruby or Sapphire and start making the living dex, using the opposite to get the remaining ones
2. Start Emerald and focus ONLY on evolving your starter and send it to complete the living dex.
3. You now need to trade, BUT as soon as Emerald receives the Pokémon, trade straight back for the next one just for the Pokédex entry, that means you only have to do 5 trades per encounter.
4. After ALL 200 Pokémon have done it, get a Johto Starter, send it away so you'll have no Pokémon left on Emerald.
5. Reset the entire save and repeat the process once for the next Johto Starter.
6. As for the final Johto Starter, you can repeat the process or make this Emerald save the hub one.
Is it tedious? It is, but you can be smart about it like catching the most Emerald can to minimize trades, catching unevolved Pokémon in Ruby/Sapphire and giving them a Rare Candy so you can have 2 Dex entries in Emerald for the price of 1. I wonder what would be the minimal amount of trades necessary for this to be feasibly done.
Crazy that I did this crap in like 2004. It was annoying at the time but I think I'm more annoyed now thinking back at how many hoops they made me jump through.
I know this video is somewhat old, but its not entirely true. First of all you can't do quick resets in FireRed and Leafgreen in order to get fossils or the kanto starters. Because it requires you to play through the postgame in order for you to trade with R/S/E/Colloseum/XD/Pokemon Box (sevii islands postgame). You also missed the Pokemon Channel Jirachi for R/S.
Also if you mix records between R/S and Emerald game, it may cause some exclusives to appear in either game. Nuzleaf and Seedot swarms in R/S and Surskit swarms in Emerald.
Keep also in mind that time related catches and evolvements are possible in Ruby and Sapphire, they are prone to the berry glitch and or dry-running of the internal game battery. (Same goes for Emerald without Berry Glitch)
You only need to quick reset one of the games FR or Lg. Pokemon Channels Jirachu isn't available in the US, I did not know till this moment that pokemon can swarm when record mixing and I just checked Bulbapedia and it confirms that by calling it a "Mass Outbreak"
@@JoeHoeDoesSomething but in the end part he claims he used R/S and colloseum and either Fr or LG to get the max amount. But you cant quick reset either FR or LG because in order to trade with R/S/E and colloseum you need to do sevii islands up until rocket hideout, which is postgame. So he needs a: either another copy of either FR or Lg to do quickresets or b: has to reset after getting the linkcenter on one island online, which is like 2 more full playthroughs
@@Marmamartha I think the faster way is to just trade into the FR/LG that you already beat and unlocked the post game stuff so you can trade into the hoenn games from that one.

In Emerald, you don't get your Johto starter until you've beaten the Elite 4. So not only do you have to trade all those Pokemon back and forth, you also have to beat the game 3 times to get the starters.
Also, you don't have to catch 200 random Pokemon to trade the living dex to Emerald. You can just touch trade. So just having 2 Pokemon, and trading stuff back right away.
Gen 3 best gen. spent by far most of my time with gen 3 when playing Pokemon as a kid.

Jirachi can be obtained the legit way too. I'm quite surprised you didn't speak about Pokemon Channel in the GCgames part, sure this game is extremly different from the others, but if you complete this game, you can get a Jirachi from this one.
Funny thing is if you were to glitch you could obtain all 386 pokes in Pokemon Emerald through the Glitzer popping" glitch.

The main 3gen games actually regard Lugia/Ho-oh as Mythical, and you don't need them to "complete" the dex (fill the requirement for what the games consider dex completion).
My personal plan to do this:
1: complete colleseum
2: start Emerald with Treecko (trade it for a pokemon on Colleseum I dont care about losing) then reset emerald
3: Do the same with Torchic
4: Complete Emerald starting with Mudkip (Trade all needed pokemon on Colleseum + other two starters onto Emerald)
5: Complete Leaf Green 3 times using the 3 different starters, trade them over to Emerald (on of the playthoughs will catch as many pokemon as possible so I can transfer them
6: Complete XD and get whats left

God, Pokemon Colosseum is so fucking good.
EDIT: also in the colosseum footage, the player uses a masterball then uses another move immediately. that was dumb, should've used an ultra ball or the infinite ball glitch
and now... I will find you wherever you are only to perform the electrode softlock on the cartdrige where you completed the pokédex... prepare for trouble! XD
Jirachi is actually obtainable in Ruby&Saphire through the GameCube when u have the addon to play gameboy advance games and Pokemon Channel there u can get Jirachi
I feel like it wasn't a case of not having enough room, and more of Gamefreak just being weird.
