I was born 97 years after william frawley was born. I am a fan of his work especially his work on I love lucy and my three sons. Though I had first seen him in the Abbott and costello movie one night in the tropics (1940). He was 79 when he passed on, and I read he had a longer lifespan then his costars on I love lucy. Nonetheless his passing was tragic. May he rest in peace he will always be remembered.
As a medical professional, I have learned how to read a doctor's handwriting. I read the death certificate not as saying myocardial infarction (heart attack), but myocardial insufficiency (congestive heart failure) which happens when the heart does not pump blood as well as it should. When this happens, blood backs up and fluid can build up in the lungs, causing shortness of breath. It can easily become fatal if bad enough. Arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) could have been a contributing factor. That last scrawl listed gout.

Thank you for all your research, Nick. It’s always so fascinating! This is probably asked so many times - and this post isn’t the proper one to use - Which post - assuming one exists- Do you have listed your favorite I-LOVE-LUCY episodes ? Or do you find it next to impossible to have a list ? I’d like to see and contribute to yours - obviously a post about a man’s passing isn’t correct place… so sorry and thanks same time.
Oh dear, Rick is now being confused with "Nick at Night!" Well, no worries (if I may speak on his behalf). Mr. Nineg is an easy going man who rarely takes offense about anything - and great for him!
Wow. He was already 65 when he started on I Love Lucy. I am impressed. Desi Arnaz's autobiography says that Frawley looked at just the pages of the script that said "Fred". I guess he was saving his energy!
I believe he died on the street. My dad's best friend his name is Dick Burright, told me the story of how he and a friend were walking down the street and an old man had collapsed, they ran over to help him, (and then seeing that it was William Frawley) assisted the nurse to take him into the building and He had told me that Mr Frawley had died in his arms before going into the building. I wished I could remember the name of the building but it had been so many years ago. My dad's friend was about 25 to 30 years old at the time and in great shape and a very honest man from what I remember of him.
I remembered about him a little. About 1927, he got divorced. No children. In 1951 the new I Love Lucy show selecting actors and actress. Desi Aranz was asked to hire Bill. Desi says that Bill have drinking problems. But, he got a chance. He and Vivian wasn’t getting along. Bill was 22 years older than her. The story says that he collapsed on sidewalk is all about.
Very interesting deep-dive, Rick. This was all new information to me. I really knew absolutely nothing about his death. Thank you for sharing this and explaining the area so well. The maps were very helpful ❤
As an Iowa boy I can say that any Iowan who made it big is a bit of pride & joy for us. His early life has several twists & turns, from stenographer for the UP in Omaha to a court reporter in Chicago to working for another railroad in St. Louis, to starting a vaudeville act with his brother Paul. & that is only a part of the journey. Thanks for sharing this info about how his life ended.
My mom told me he was an alcoholic and couldn’t find work for a while. He went to Desi for I love Lucy, but Desi was hesitant to hire him because of his reputation. He promised Desi he wouldn’t drink during the time of the shows, so Desi said he would give him the job if he promised not to drink. He said to him, the first time you come to work drunk or alcohol on your breath, your contact gets ripped up and the rest is history. I’m sorry if you already knew this, or if it false, but I wanted to share it with you.
Lucy wanted to hire her friend and actress Barbara Pepper to play Ethel, but Desi said no go because both she and Bill Frawley were alcoholics and expected too many problems.
@@KCAlden It is said that Barbara Pepper also had a drinking problem and that's why Lucy & Desi passed on her joining the cast: since two drinkers would be inviting twice as much trouble. Barbra Pepper instead was cast as Doris Ziffel on GREEN ACRES where she appeared from 1965-68 before her own death from a Heart attack in 1969.
Rick, My Hubby & I enjoy watching your videos. We like the Easter eggs you find & all the behind the scenes stuff, along with debunking false things out there. Thank you for all your hard work! 😊

They mis-spelled the ladies name on the death cert. Her name is Patricia Barry, not Berry. There is one connection I found that they have, they're both from Iowa. So far I haven't found anything else.
For those of you with MeTV, the My Three Sons episodes with William Frawley are currently running, and will probably run through the rest of August before his character is written out as having gone to Ireland. In reality, he didn't pass the annual physical exam required by the studio, so they had to let him go. Sadly, his character was mentioned once or twice after his departure but then was never mentioned again. From Wikipedia: Frawley's final on-camera performance was on October 25, 1965, with a brief cameo appearance in Lucille Ball's second television sitcom, The Lucy Show, in the episode "Lucy and the Countess Have a Horse Guest". Frawley plays a horse trainer and Lucy comments: "You know, he reminds me of someone I used to know."
Mr. Frawley wasn't looking very well in his last TV performance--the one on "The Lucy Show" in October 1965 called "The Traveller." Thanks for sharing the actual death certificate.
I remember using maps to look at E 68th Street in Manhattan. Of course, # 623 would be in the East River. The end of the street looks like a hospital today.
The Hollywood Knickerbocker Hotel is also where celebrity guests on “American Bandstand” were given accommodations while they were in Hollywood for their guest appearances with “The Dicker”.
I'm trying to wrap my head around why Frawley left his estate to Patricia Barry. They were in an episode of My Three Sons in 1962 and she was born in Iowa too.
Not ever seeing Los Angeles, thank you Rick for taking the time to research this issue. I am comforted that Bill wasn't alone and didn't suffer at the end and also true friends, Desi and Fred McMurray were there for him.
I really do appreciate you writing about this. It never dawned on me that bill Frawley didn’t have many people in his life. His brothers were sick in the hospital. He didn’t have a wife or children. But he did have great friends and people who cared about him close by. That does warm my heart and makes me realize that he understood how much she was loved
@@ricknineg Rick; please see what you can find about Patricia Barry; I have seen her in 1960s sitcoms including My Three Sons and Perry Mason...wouldn't it be grand if she is related to Bill.
Exactly! The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel right by La Brea is a good ten blocks west on Hollywood Blvd. from Hollywood and Vine. Way too far to carry a heavy Frawley by any strong man! Even if Frawley was light why go all that distance? More likely he was taken or carried a few feet to the only restaurant there at the time(I ate there many times) on the northwest corner of Hollywood and Vine, or a cab was hailed or someone with a car took them to the lobby of The Knickerbocker or the nearby hospital(most likely) not Hollywood Presbyterian or Cedars of Lebanon(later moved and renamed Cedars Sinai) near also but farther.
Very interesting. I wonder how much the medical field was aware of the possible dangers of high blood pressure and heart attacks in the 1960's. I have been taking high blood meds for years.

William Frawley is probably my second favorite actor on I Love Lucy, he really makes me laugh the most along with Lucy, that sure was sad how he passaway. Thankyou Rick for making this video as a memory to a great actor.🙂
The maps were very helpful Rick, since I’m not familiar with LA. I had always heard that he died on the street. Just glad he had nurse and wasn’t alone.

Rick, great video but you forgot to mention that Frawley died the same day as Alice "Gladys Kravitz" Pearce. Also I think Elizabeth Patterson-dear Mrs Trumbull lived @ the Roosevelt Hotel.
Google reported that Little Freddy Mertz was coming out of a movie theater when he had his Heart attack .. unfortunately Mr. Frawley passed away!. There is an episode of This is Your Life.. Featuring William.. A must see!.
Myocardial Infarction means a heart attack, usually when blood flow slows or stops in a coronary artery. Nobody has ever stated if Frawley tried to walked to the Hotel after experiencing chest pain collapsed and was carry by the nurse the rest of the way but I bet Frawley might have directed his male nurse to the hotel to rest or to call a ambulance . Great video with very helpful map usage! Without the maps you used for reference, I have to admit I would be lost as to where the events took place. Bill will be missed even to this day. Oh for corn’s sake, I’m getting all mushy. 😢
On the other hand, wasn't the Roosevelt the long-time home of Elizabeth "Mrs. Trumbull" Patterson? Maybe Fred wanted to use his final moments to collect the rent.
Fascinating video! But I had to laugh when you said that Frawley was born in "Burlington, Iowa, of all places." Everybody's gotta be from somewhere, Rick! Not all of us are Angelinos, nor do we want to be!
Hey Rick, enjoy your videos. As far as where Frawley died, it seems perfectly feasible to me that after collapsed, a motorist or cab driver may have stopped to help. Plenty of cantankerous old men (I include myself) don't want to go to hospitals,. It's possible he knew someone who lived nearby and wanted to be with them.
I heard Bill Frawley got a share of ownership of I love lucy, do you know How much money that has generated since his death and how much does it still bring in annually today?
I always thought he was returning from a movie when he had heart attack. Why didnt his nurse start CPR?, I really like how you clear up some of the misinformation regarding his death. Also like you I grew up in LA.and know Hollywood very well. Thanks again and RIP Mr. Frawley.
From what I've read, Frawley collapsed outside of the Knickerbocker Hotel, and was drug into the lobby by his male nurse. Desi Arnaz took out a full page ad that said, Buenos noches, amigo-Goodbye, my friend!
Not to say it couldn’t happen but I’m thinking here. It’s not quite 6pm, in one of the busiest streets in LA, in one of the largest cities in the US. Mind you there’s no cell phones in 1966 I get it but why carry a man having a heart attack anywhere. Couldn’t someone passing by run to a pay phone and call for help? It just seems unnecessary.
I hate to say it but I believe Bill Frawley probably died on Hollywood Blvd. I too am familiar with Hollywood and that area having lived there for decades. If he indeed collapsed say at Hollywood & Vine that would still be a distance to "carry" a man who just had a major heart attack don't you think? It's possible I guess if his nurse had some sort of help, but he would know not to move such a sick person. It would make more sense to have someone call a ambulance from a nearby business ( pre cellphone days). In any event, your videos are a joy for me because I grew up in that era. Bill Frawley will always be grandpa "Bub" too me though, from MY THREE SONS. Thanks for the video!
Good video, Rick! William Frowley was an amazing actor. In addition to I love Lucy, and My 3 Sons. He was also on two movies that I am aware of. "The Fighting Seabees." He knew and worked with John Wayne. Sadly, William's character was killed in that movie. He was also in a Christmas Comedy movie called, "The Lemon Drop Kid." Bob Hope and him were in the movie. William was dressed as Santa, collecting money in a kettle. Very funny movie. If you have not seen it, Rick, you need to. William lived in that movie though. I knew he died from a heart attack but was not sure of all the details. Thanks! But William Frowley knew a lot of actors and actresses that were popular at the time. Take care.

The hospital location was at the present site of LAPD Hollywood Station, which was featured prominently in the Bosch series.

From what I've read, Frawley collapsed outside of the Knickerbocker Hotel, and was drug into the lobby by his male nurse. Desi Arnaz took out a full page ad that said, Buenos noches, amigo-Goodbye, my friend!
If Frawley was born in Iowa he did NOT become a “Native Angelino”!
Everyone who lives in LA for a certain time becomes a Native Angelino
Is the police station built on the hospital site the one shown on Adam 12?
Not to say it couldn’t happen but I’m thinking here. It’s not quite 6pm, in one of the busiest streets in LA, in one of the largest cities in the US. Mind you there’s no cell phones in 1966 I get it but why carry a man having a heart attack anywhere. Couldn’t someone passing by run to a pay phone and call for help? It just seems unnecessary.
I want to know why these actors lived in hotels?? Didnt they make enough money to buy a house???
That was really interesting. He lived quite a long time for a man of that era. Sad though the way he died. Great info, Rick.
I heard he was walking home from the movies and collapsed and died outside the Knickerbockers hotel
Thanks kindly!
He had in his will care for his brothers who were in a home.
Take care.
Frawley was also in the 1947 movie Miracle on 34th Street.
