This part confuses me, do you keep pressing down in small increments or do you keep alternating between pressing up and down? I can get the first hover, but after that Link just falls back down regardless of which direction I press.

so after the first hover don’t let go of the stick, just slowly hold farther down on the control stick until you hover to a height at which you can sidehop.
