Exactly. Iroh was a lifelong general in a constant war, who only really questioned 'what is this all about' when he, personally, lost the most important person in the world to him. How many sons, husbands, and fathers did he take from others - directly or via his army - before coming to that realization?
I think Bumi came across as a little harder than usual exactly for the reasons he said. After a CENTURY of making hard calls, his old friend shows up like nothing has happened? Like choices weren't being made between feeding soldiers or children? I think he saw in Aang what a century of war had taken from him, a literal representation of the good old days. I like that at the end that instead of teaching Aang a lesson, he ends up learning/being reminded of one. That's pretty ATLA, and it opens the door to Bumi being more Bumi in later episodes.

I am the same with Spartan, I got mixed feels on this episode. For me, the only actual gripe I have with this adaptation is Bumi. I have viewed and accepted the whole season, enjoyed a lot, Bumi hit me wrong. For a character design they did well, depicted as an eccentric old man who is strong. Had a bunch of his odd quirks. But Bumi was meant to be a loving part of Aang's past, one he could turn to, to ground him and give him advice. A rare not bad adult. He was never meant to be a bitter old man, we have plenty of them. Since he changed for the better by the end I accepted it, but I still wish they didnt change him. But apart form Bumi, I loved the rest of the episode! Nice homage to a lot of characters and side stories. Also nice Spartan you're the first reactor I've seen caught "Leaves from the Vine" being played during the funeral! They didn't make him sing the famous song, but they did have it present, which made me cry. The funeral didn't exist in the OG series, but it was a beautiful little moment for Zuko and Iroh. Also mad respect for "Secret Tunnel!!"
"Leaves From The Vine" is Mako's song (Mako was the OG voice actor for Uncle Iroh), so I never would have expected they'd get Paul Sun-Hyung Lee to sing it. I think the instrumental was beautifully poignant.
@@psychedelicpegasus7587 Yep, Mako passed shortly after his performance and even the Iroh we got for the rest of the series refused to sing it. It's Mako's song. Its why I am so grateful they decided to not have him sing but still paid homage to the song. It's very endearing.
Yea the katara, sokka fight felt contrived for me too. Like they just needed them to fight about something. And the Oma and Shu story felt very power point, click through. That’s one of my biggest gripes about this show soooooo much exposition
I think people often forget that Katara was a prodigy even in the cartoon, she went from barely a bender to a unique bending master in less than a year.
Yes, that song playing on the background during Lu-Ten's funeral, that was indeed Leaves From The Vine. Immediately heard it, and immediately got shivers.
Bumi's unhingedness is funny and cute in an animated show, but the reality of it in real life is an older person with dementia. This IS how someone who was as weird as he was in the comics would be, with the how scary it is because he's so random. In the cartoon we can chuckle about how goofy it is. In real life it's unsettling.
So out of the three storylines covered in this episode zuko and iroh made this episode. I don’t like how they portrayed Bumi but I understand what they were aiming for. Secret tunnels was just fan service. I love the song but I wish they had saved it for season 2.
As an og fan I watched it back in the day 2005 - 2008 I do like this show I am seeing it from a different perspective it’s like it’s own show and it’s good
Yeah I loved Bumi lol the change was so realistic and I love how Aang kinda gives him hope again thru friendship. Because think about it, Bumi been at war for a 100 years, I can only imagine how much that effects a person.
The whole Bumi change was not too bad, in my opinion, because it does make sense he would feel that way after a century of war. It does, however, make Bumi feel different than in the cartoon, and I agree with some people that say this angle doesn't really feel needed and could have been used for a different character. Still, I don't mind think it sets back the story much. That being said, the resolution really did not feel earned. It came off somewhat cheesy. Also, I don't really understand how sokka or katara really helped. Aang literally moved the boulders sideways anyways lol. The part I really hated about this episode was the cave of the two lovers. While some of the dialogue was alright, most of it felt stale and pointless. Also, the badger moles "sensing" their love is absolute lazy garbage writing. I felt like I could defend the show against slander up until that. If you're not gonna even try to make it make sense, just don't add it. They took out an aang and katara moment for a steaming pile of crap writing that didn't even need to be added this season. Nevertheless, anything that had Zuko and/or Iroh in it was an absolute win. The solstice decision rebirthed, the dynamic duo fighting, Iroh's words to aang, the exchange between Iroh and the Earth nation soldier, and both of the immaculate flashback scenes with leaves from the vibe subtlety playing in the background. You could say that it would be hard to mess those scenes up, but honestly, they executed them perfectly (not well or adequately, but with a keen grasp of what makes ATLA ATLA).
@SpartanandPudgey It is very interesting that they made Ozai slightly more humane by giving him scenes with Iroh (somewhat comforting him… maybe? 🤔) than in original show where he was Pure evil without any redeeming/good quality. 17:51
@@SpartanandPudgey Good to see what you Pudgey and Spartan are thinking. It reminds me when I saw some films or series for the first time and it is interesting to see/hear what other peoples opinions are. 🙂
Completely disagree with your opinions on Bumi. I saw the animated series first and always felt Bumi was too ridiculous & happy go lucky. Took away from the seriousness of the lessons he was trying to teach Aang. Conceptual good themes to convey but watered down and I honestly didn't feel much. Compare that to this more grounded, realistic, darker, bitter take on Bumi and it makes for a much more complelling test for Aang psychologically & emotionally. I personally felt waaaaay more from both Aang and Bumi in the adaptation. Also, I thought the actor did a excellent job of playing a more serious/darker unhinged version of Bumi.
Actually looks 100% fine looks wise but also understandable they way they did it because they creators where given 8 episodes on the other hand no jong jong no huru 😂i give it a solid 70 out of a 100 hopefully season 2 is better
Zucco does a great job of looking younger and more naive, vulnerable. He has great range. This may be the avatar but zucco is for sure my favorite character and Iroh is right there next to him. I love their relationship. ❤
The Bumi criticism I understand. He was always gonna be hard to get right enough so as not to poke at nostalgic fans. I do love Utkarsh though. He was awesome in iZombie as well as The Fall of The House of Usher.
In regard to the original always being the best, for the most part I would agree as generally people don't bother remaking bad shows. On exception I can think of though is Battlestar Galactica - the original (1978) was ok, for its time, but the 2004 remake is leagues ahead of it, far superior in every way.
Unfortunately some people will hate something and not give it a chance from day one. Personally I think they've taken note of the failure of the live action predecessor and given a good effort to make this a respectful adaptation. Way better than I was expecting, that's for sure. Still prefer the original cartoon but this has been enjoyable to watch.
Kitaras ice bending she did at the exact same time as the original, vs jet. It was both a surprise and both because of the same reason. Bumi in the live action felt more real. In the cartoon its like he never changed and was the exact same person as he was when he was 12. In reality war changes people especially in having to deal with it for 100 years and was abandoned by his friends and the avatar. Its completely justified to act the way he did with Aang. Aang had to show him to get the old bumi back out which makes sense.
@@BananaGuy0 he changed due to getting older and the knowledge that comes with that but the advice he gave Aang was as if it was before the war happened and he knew it was coming. The same with how he acted as a character. The live action depicted him as war torn king with little help cause there was no avatar.
@@BananaGuy0 He never changed in the cartoon .. he was basically an old man with better bending skills but the exact same person The LA is giving it a more believable and darker twist but keeping some of his quirkiness intact
This episode lagged for me a bit sometimes, BUT I loved several aspects - Iroh's story and the different perspective on him from someone hurt by what he did in his past, the sibling argument in the tunnels (i have four siblings; this was really accurate😂), and Zuko and Iroh's backstory from when Lu Ten died. Bumi was a mixed bag for me. I appreciated the changes; it was in line with the change to go more realistic/mature. But there were moments when I wasn't sold. That being said, he nailed the voice, and I can't imagine taking on the responsibility of playing such an iconic character.😊
I think you've got to seperate this show from the original. It's the same with The Last of Us series, both games are masterpieces with the best mo-cap actors in the business (Ashley Johnson/Troy Baker/Nolan North ect) you're never going to get close to a masterpiece when readapting it (Lord of the Rings might be the only exception).. And its the same with Avatar, the voice actors were all highly talented.. With anything that's animated, the budgets not all being blown on special effects or finding actors who are the same age/look similar. I've enjoyed this series, but its hard to beat something that was already a 10/10.
I 100% agree with you both. The visuals of the show are nothing short of beautiful. At least some of the story telling modifications were good. Some we're contrived and I did not like. I think almost all of the deeper exploration of Zuko/Iroh characters was well done. But some of that I think is to the detriment of team Avatar (they seem like the side plot in their own show). Maybe because a great deal of the character development we see is from Zuko. It just all felt a bit rushed. Fingers crossed that they try and let the story breathe more in seasons 2 & 3.
Thats what happens when they adapt multiple episodes into one. Everything feels truncated, i guess they didnt really learn anything from the last movie.
The secret tunnels thing was the only thing that bothered me about this season mostly because it was in the second season of the original series and in this there were only Sokka and Katara which feels off but I think they did it that way because of two things the pandemic and the age difference between the actors playing Aang and Katara but they renewed the show for seasons two and three
Bumi in the animation is a much more fun character, in the live action he is more believable. The animation is more child friendly while still being fine for adults, this Bumi is a more mature version - someone who grew up in a world at war and has spent 100 years watching everything fall apart.
My initial feeling of Bumi was that they butchered the hell out of him, but after thinking, how Bumi acts is completely understandable after 100 years of war. On the other hand, I don't like how Aang had to teach Bumi the lessons and not the other way around
I agree that they changed the essence of Bumi too much. He was too suicidal and not wise enough. Also the focus was more on Bumi learning a lesson instead of Aang . I think the actor did fine with what he was given. Bumi is definitely the most difficult character to play in a live-action.
Spartan you're focusing too much on what you can expect from an anime and taking to a real actors, one example I cite is you actually expected old Bumi to have one near explosive eye while the other squinted, all of anime cannot possibly translate to real life actors without extremely heavy usage of CGI and that itself would crush this show for trying too hard, I hope you can be mature enough to understand that. Second thing is about story progression and where and what things happened and how they happened, yeah I give you that but again the reality of using real people for a show is far costlier than an anime so any number of things could come up and they really have to give people a gist of the story while still allowing full experience of emotions. Some minor understandable things have been fast tracked while others have been elaborated. You guys gotta realize people who have never watched the original series are now tuning in too so they have actually made a good balance for all, giving fans stuff while giving non fans stuff that they both can hang on to. I wish people would stop taking everything so negatively.
Iroh? What about Zuko? He repeatedly gave up on chasing the Avatar to save Iroh. And he showed how he’s actually a sweet kid just being absolutely destroyed by his father.
The people who are trashing the show, I can’t for the fkn life of me figure out why you’d watch reactions to it. If you thought it was that bad . Some people just have too much time on their hands 😂
As far as I'm concerned, Bumi was completely missing in this episode. It's weird because it's so strongly contrasted with the Iroh/Zuko stuff which is amazing.
I know ppl have had mixed opinions. I personally had so many issues with this remake. Like if it was its own thing fine. But since it's a life action version I can't help but to compare it. Obviously I didn't think it would be a 1:1 copy and paste but one big thing in this episode I didn't like was the tunnel. Katara and sokka went in. In the animated series it was aang and katara and it was a crucial part of their journey and experiencing their feelings towards each other.😬
At this part of the story, that plotline would have felt very out of place. Aang still feels too young for her in the live action (at least for me personally), and they haven't established any sort of romantic interest for Katara yet. It would have seemed forced. I'd rather they let the chemistry build a bit more, which will probably happen some time in season 2, assuming they want to keep the romance plotline.
@withxoutxlife yeah I get that. That is very true. That's just one of the many reasons it's floored. It just seems rushed to me like they condensed 2 seasons in like 8 episodes. Like they had omashu, jet and the freedom fighters, the inventor and his his kid, earth king scene, secret tunnels etc all in like 2 episodes
@@withxoutxlifehe could still have a crush on her, just like in the beginning of the cartoon, he had a crush on her and she thought he was as cute as Momo
Could have been the greatest show ever made, and many people would still have decided they hated it simply for existing. Sometimes, without even watching it. Just how it goes with adaptations. Personally, I loved it. I really enjoy the original, but it's not one of my most beloved franchises. So it doesn't bother me when they change stuff.
This series is my introduction into the ATLA world...I'm loving the dynamic between Zuko and Iroh. Iron seems to be the only love and family that Zuko has ever experienced. Iroh in turn needs his nephew to fill the void left behind after his son's passing. These two actors are the only ones doing/impacting anything for me. Ngl I didn't 'get' Bumi....1st of all he looks gross lol (not important, I know but...) and he came out of nowhere. The show didn't explain to me the significance of the friendship between Aang and Bumi, he came off as a bad Disney villain...and why would a man that age be so resentful of a child? Yeah ok he had plenty of responsibility etc but did he not learn any wisdom or tolerance in being a ruler who had to make the hard choices he keeps banging on about? It seems the Bumi character was better developed in the animation and I hope so, this intro to him made no sense to me nor did it make any mark on me as a viewer, indeed IDK how important Bumi may or may not be in ATLA but I hope to never see him again..
You can't fathom what 100 years of war would do to someone's mental state. Being 112 years old on its own deteriorates even the strongest of minds. Add to that the trauma and stress of the situation he had to live through, and I'd say Bumi's portrayal was far more accurate to what one could expect in reality, compared to what was shown in the animated version. That said, I do prefer the animated version to the live action. However, I would be lying if I said that I don't think live action Bumi's perspective narratively fits, or that I don't 'get' where he's coming from.
There are times where the visuals look great and other scenes where it looks like a cheesy green screen set with fake props. Why couldn’t they use real cabbages😂

They could've had leaves from the vine play in the worst scene ever and I'd still get emotional
facts
I think it’s a great adaptation, and I never expected it to be as good. Nothing ever will.
Who else loved Bumi in this😂😂 He's so savage and funny
Yeah I loved Bumi in this 😂😂
@@marleymarsss Him and his funny uncle jokes 😂
i noticed that as well. he's also kinder about zuko
@@NarinsNewAge-zz2hf Yeah. Instead of treating him like trash 🗑️ he (I think) wants to corrupt him (being without compassion).
yes definitely giving us more backstory and context here which is great
The comics give Ozai more development than the show and you really understand some of his backstory
@@SpartanandPudgey Good to see what you Pudgey and Spartan are thinking. It reminds me when I saw some films or series for the first time and it is interesting to see/hear what other peoples opinions are. 🙂
Im surprised that nobody catches leaves from the vine playing earlier in the prison
Zuko with cc is crazy 😂
The Bumi criticism I understand. He was always gonna be hard to get right enough so as not to poke at nostalgic fans. I do love Utkarsh though. He was awesome in iZombie as well as The Fall of The House of Usher.
RIP Akira Toriyama ❤
Spartan & Pudegy Awesome Video/Episode Today!!🔥🐐🐐💎
In regard to the original always being the best, for the most part I would agree as generally people don't bother remaking bad shows. On exception I can think of though is Battlestar Galactica - the original (1978) was ok, for its time, but the 2004 remake is leagues ahead of it, far superior in every way.
Damn, the mention of DBZ 😢
Jet was also originally frozen by kitara, except to a tree.
Dam Pudgey... stop roasting yourself under the sun girl 😂😂😂❤❤
In the cartoon Bumi did change while still keeping his playful side.
@@BananaGuy0 he changed due to getting older and the knowledge that comes with that but the advice he gave Aang was as if it was before the war happened and he knew it was coming. The same with how he acted as a character. The live action depicted him as war torn king with little help cause there was no avatar.
@@BananaGuy0 He never changed in the cartoon .. he was basically an old man with better bending skills but the exact same person
The LA is giving it a more believable and darker twist but keeping some of his quirkiness intact
"A Thong?!"🤣🤣🤣🤣 Sir Spartan you mean Iroh left his sandal. I can't, you guys are cracking me up
Some countries call sandals, thongs.
Its called a Thong in Australia
That earth bender has been the best actor so far =D
I love Iroh but that Earth bender was so spot on man. The entire world is being ravaged and invaded by the Fire Nation for a 100 years.
The secret tunnels thing was the only thing that bothered me about this season mostly because it was in the second season of the original series and in this there were only Sokka and Katara which feels off but I think they did it that way because of two things the pandemic and the age difference between the actors playing Aang and Katara but they renewed the show for seasons two and three
Pudgey back at it with the sun tanning 😂😂 looking like the terminator when he get burnt in the fire
lmao
🤣🤣🤣
That was in fact, leaves from the vine in the background
You guys ever gonna review the dune movies?
Who is you guy’s favorite character ??😋
Iroh!
Peaky blinders. Wont be disappointed
Spartan's either not getting enough target practice and/or not resting his mind enough.
The story of Oma and Shu was (almost) the same but in the original I feel like Katara but more emotion into telling it than Chong did in this.
14:44 A stinky thong .. as an American that gave me such a horrible visual LMFAOO
I think they made this change about Bumi's character to focus more on Aang's relationship with Monk Gyatso instead
🐨
The people who are trashing the show, I can’t for the fkn life of me figure out why you’d watch reactions to it. If you thought it was that bad . Some people just have too much time on their hands 😂
Please don't allow other peoples hate of something to ruin your enjoyment of it
As far as I'm concerned, Bumi was completely missing in this episode.
It's weird because it's so strongly contrasted with the Iroh/Zuko stuff which is amazing.
For me 12 and 56 was the best
So ge ready 5 6 gonne be asgood as epi 2
Can't believe you skipped SECRET TUUUUNNNEEEEELLL
The episode three was very good to a first time viewer
@@withxoutxlife good point!
To be fair im with the soilder."we were at war" yeah a war you started and your son was killed because of you basically stop crying
There are times where the visuals look great and other scenes where it looks like a cheesy green screen set with fake props. Why couldn’t they use real cabbages😂
being a atla fan makes it so hard to watch this. everytime i get to Azula and katara i turn it off from cringe overload
Please watch this😊

It does nothing better then the cartoon. at best its ok at worst its boring, terrible in comparison to the cartoon
other than the disgruntled disillusioned aspect of bumixs character (which I liked)... I didn't like any if the acting. It was so cringe
This is the wrost episode, it becomes better
