    Dragons are presented in a very different and unique way in Allison Goodman's Eon/Eona duology. They are more elemental, spirit creatures but still an essential part of the narrative and the world-building

    I highly recommend Hobb's Liveship Traders trilogy! It comes chronologically before The Rain Wilds Chronicles, but it has a very important dragon subplot (more prominent starting from the second book), features some Rainwilder characters, and gives some background on the dragons in the Rain Wilds Chronicles!

    • @JeansThoughts
      @JeansThoughts  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did wonder given that there is the one dragon in the Rainwilds at the beginning who arranges with the rainwilder's to take care of the eggs, that perhaps her original plot was in the previous books ^_^. I'll have to go back and read it - it'll be like a prequel haha.

    Patricia Briggs has a duology called Hurog, it's great and it's all about dragons. It is also kind of different than any other dragon book I've read. I never heard anything about it on book tube.

      Yeah I didn't even realise it was YA until I looked on goodreads after I'd read it. So many books get put in the YA and Adult section these days I do start to wonder what's the point haha but agreed, love it!

    The best part about the Inheritance series is without a doubt the dialog between Saphira and whomever she is talking to, or the chapters from her point of view in Brisngr, I’m yet to find another series like it, as much as it uses some ideas from other books, it really stood out from the rest, atleast for me, but also it was my first series that I chose for myself, so it holds quite a nostalgic place for me.
    I found I enjoyed all 4 books, along with the recent book which is a short tales book, it’s a must read for any dragon fan!

    Have you read The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro?

    • @rmdcarney
      @rmdcarney 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      So, did you watch the video? The dragon in this story is an allegory at best and regardless, never interacts with the characters... which Jean said was her main draw to dragon books to begin with: sentience.
      It's a wonderful book (one of the best things I read last year!) but not what she's asking for...

    • @KevTheImpaler
      @KevTheImpaler 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I watched it. I did not think it would be one of Jean's favourite dragon books. Kazuo Ishiguro's book was a big literary event a couple of years ago and it had a dragon in it, even if many people were disappointed with the book. I don't think the dragon was any more allegorical than the rest of the story.

    Raising Dragons is the first book of a series by the name Dragons in Our Midst. Its by Bryan Davis. Its an Arthurian story that brings dragons in human skin to the modern day to avoid extinction by the dragon slayers, they are incredibly intelligent, and they also end up mating with humans, these hybrids are the main characters of the story as they try to find out whether they are human or dragon, and if their parents ever really cared for them(the doubt was because of emotional detachment and the fact of just how many negative legends of dragons there were, and that too is explained).

    I would say my top 2 dragon series include the inheritance cycle, as you mentioned, but also the dragonrider chronicles by nicole conway. The human and elves are at war, and a half human half elf is bullied in his city. His father makes saddles, so he gets to go to the dragonrider academy when his father is making saddles for the students. When he is there, he surprisingly matches with a wild dragon, and gets into the academy. He learns that the fighting between the two races was unnecessary and uncovers a secret. Funnily enough, my youtube name is actually the name of the main character, Jaevid Broadfeather. I hope you read it! The first book is called Fledgling.

    Tamora Pierce's second quartet, The Immortals, features dragons prominently. Although the main dragon is a baby who can't speak to humans, she's still highly intelligent and in the last book we get to meet more and see their political systems up in the realms of the gods, which can get almost Ent like in their long drawn out meetings! And they know full well they're way smarter than humans!

    While they are not designed to be solely based around dragons, the second book quartet by Tamora Pierce which starts with Wild Magic ends up with some absolutely fabulous dragons and an even more wonderful dragon. These are some my favourite books and a short story about the same baby dragon made it into an anthology called the Dragon book. I would highly recommend them. I was also a big fan of Anne McCaffrey and the dragons of Pern. Its more scifi than fantasy but really worth trying. Start with either Dragonflight or Dragons Dawn.

I think I have reread these books at least three times.....love them....x Happy reading 😃

    The only other dragon book that I liked enough to recommend is a children's/young adult one called Dragonkeeper by Carole Wilkinson. Only just now have I realised it is an Australian novel reading the wiki page, but it is set in Han Dynasty-era China and centres around a slave girl who becomes the first female dragonkeeper in the land with her ageing curmudgeon of a dragon - it is JUST AS COOL AS IT SOUNDS.

    I have a few Dragon books to recommend: Dragonsbane series by Barbara Hambly- you think the Dragon is bad, but.. wait till the end. Dragon Champion by E E Knight- from the dragon's POV. I really like Hatch: Dragons of Laton by James Stevens- a YA/all Ages adventure- not sure how sentient the Dragon it- but an emotional telepathic bond- The same could be said for The Dragons of Pern by Anne McCaffrey- technically SCiFi but really Fantasy.

    Dragons are kind of a thing in our house LOL. Online I often refer to my husband as, The Dragon. And my stepson devoured the Chris D'Lacy series. I seriously tell people just to buy them a t-shirt with a dragon on it for their birthdays.
    I have a couple of recommendations that I didn't see mentioned so far. Shana Abe has a series called the Drakon that begins with The Smoke Thief. So good. The dragons are sentient, powerful, and amazing. It's a great adventure romance series.
    Then there's Sophie Jordan's Firelight series, beginning with Firelight. It's a YA fantasy series with a little star-crossed love thing going on.
    Mercedes Lackey has a series called SERRAted edge. It's a bit dated, I read it back in high school and when I revisit it now, it's a bit unintentionally comical due to the fact that it's set in that late 80's early 90's period. It's an Urban Fantasy series that more focuses on the fae courts existing in (relatively) modern times. There is at least one sentient dragon in the series, but it's not the focus. It has lots of race cars, and good guys trying to save mortals from the bad guys.
    Finally, one of my favourite series is by Yasmine Galenorn and it's the Otherworld series. It's an Urban Fantasy/Paranormal Romance. I love it! The dragons in this series are pretty awesome. It starts with just one and then more come in as the series continues. The series is focused on these three half fae/half human sisters and each book is in a different sisters POV. The Camille books (1, 4, 7...) are the ones with the most dragon action.
    I don't know if any of these will be what you are looking for, but I thought I would throw them out there in case you, or anyone else reading these comments might like them. :)

    i remember being in third grade and having the inheritance cycle blow up in popularity. i finally read the first book about 3 years ago and loved it, its so charming. that series had the potential of being huge, but there was some faulty writing here and there. I cant be too harsh though, the author was only a teenager when he wrote those.
    Have you read the summer dragon, aka the evertide series? im partway through the first book, and its really good so far!

    Adult fantasy dragon rec: Dragon Prince and Dragon Star Trilogies by Melanie Rawn. Great epic high fantasy, definitely the older style of fantasy, books are long and dense but really really good, so worth it, the world is so fleshed out. Dragon's play more of a roll as the books move forward but they do appear right from the start, the humans don't know much about the dragon's at first, I think they actually consider them something to be conquered or a status symbol. Later on in the series they move into more of a cooperative role and they learn more about each other.

    Have you read The Enchanted Forest Chronicles series by Patricia C. Wrede? They are a series of four books, written for children, but they are still very entertaining for adults. The first book starts with the Princess Cimorene escaping a forced marriage with a very dull prince, by running away and volunteering to be a Dragon's Princess (cooking, cleaning, and organizing the library) of the dragon Kazul, who is in line to potentially become the next King of the dragons, and who becomes a very dear friend to her. The books together to tell the story of the war between the dragons (who naturally produce their own magic) and the wizards (who wish to siphon away the dragons' magic and use it as their own). Each book is told from the POV of a different character: Princess Cimorene, King Mendenbar, the witch Morwen, and the child Daystar. They are very intertwined, very funny, and the dragons (mostly quite intelligent) are very important characters. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.

      I haven't but Wrede's first book has been on my goodreads TBR for years - I will need to make sure I get to it at some point, it sounds magical ^_^.

    I think an issue with the new-ish sub-genre of fantasy of manners, is that some of them - like Tooth and Claw, from what I've heard - definitely balance the fantasy and the comedy of manners elements. Where as others might - like the Lady Trent series and it's VERY light fantasy - might lean heavier on one side or the other. So, while sub-genre can be helpful in picking books, it's almost like we need sub-sub-genres to really know what we're going into when we're craving something particular.
    Curious if you've ever seen the animated movie Flight of Dragons? It's quite old, and has a somewhat whimsical style that dips it's toes in darkness the way some older children's pieces did. If you've seen The Last Unicorn, it has a similar tone to that. Whilst Dragons are in the title, they're not what the entire focus of the movie is about, but they do play a decently big part. They are sentient in nature, and whenever you've talked about Dragons, I thought about telling you about it. There is a book tied to it, but I haven't read it yet; and I'm not sure whether it is a novel or something altogether different. But I grew up watching Flight of Dragons, and I think you would enjoy the other parts of the story too.

    also PLEASE read The Enchanted Forest Chronicles, I know it's technically like middle-grade/YA but the books are extremely well written and fun and the characters are so quirky and heartwarming and it's actually my #1 favourite dragon series
    unfortunately I couldn't get past the bad writing in Eragon so I didn't read the rest of the Inheritance books, and for The Last Dragon chronicles I read the first 3 before I was 15 and liked them a lot, but I recently read the 4th and 5th and was shocked by how bad the writing actually is... anyway. I LOVE Jane Austen. Been wanting to read Tooth and Claw since the first time you mentioned it in one of your videos haha I saw the Eragon movie and it kind of spoilt the book for me. But after seeing how enthusiastic you are about it, I'm considering giving it a chance :D
    Have you read How To Train Your Dragon?

      The Eragon movie broke my heart haha it is such a terrible adoption and film, no wonder they never made any more. Such a shame because it actually had a lot of great cast members but they just cut out far too much that it barely made sense and they needed a LOTR size budget to really do it justice. I would obviously still highly recommend the books haha. Much more going on. And you must read Tooth and Claw, I need more people to appreciate its awesomeness with me! ^_^
      I haven't (seen the films of course) but I have been considering it.

      I'd definitely recommend it - it's a slow start but by page 100 it is enrapturing and then there is a whole even bigger and better sequel ^_^

    I'm reading Robin Hobb's books from the beginning and even though I'm loving them - I can't wait to get to the dragons!
    The Inheritance Cycle is one of my all time favourite series. Like you say, a lot of pages, but I thought totally worth it for the pay off at the end!
    I'm really keen to pick up the Lady Trent series, been hearing such amazing things!

    A friend of mine sent me the link to your video because she knows how much I adore dragons myself ^_^ And I must say, I love your video and for me too, the inheritance cycle is one of my favorite series of all time !!! It's just perfect ! IF you want a recommendation, you should probably check out the Kings and Sorcerers series by Morgan Rice, the first book being Rise of the Dragons and it's pretty awesome !!! I'm starting book 2 soon and I hope it'll be as good as the 1st one ;)

    Have you read Temeraire since filming this video? I actually discovered this recommendations video because I was looking for people reviewing Temeraire, which is now my favourite long series ever! Based on what you said about your own dragon preferences, it sounds like these books would be perfect for you :)

      I've only read Dragonflight and much as I enjoyed a lot of it...the blatant non consensual views and misogynistic undertones were so blatant and sickening. Idk, I wasn't expecting it at all going into it :( would you recommend I continue with the series?

    I have a love for dragons as well! Sadly, there aren't as many Dragon books in the world as I'd like, so i decided to write my own ^-^. If I get it published, I'll be sure to send you a free copy so you can review it :D

    I'm obsessed with dragons!!! It's so nice to finally meet a fellow dragon lover. I think you'd might like the book called a Song in the Silence by Elizabeth Kerner. It plays on this exact idea you're talking about where there are the more intelligent, wise and articulate dragons and then there are the animalistic dragons which the other dragons refer to as the 'fallen'. I love the book and would def recommend it.
