Thank You Sean. Glad I lived to tell no doubt. Couldn't have imagined it as bad as it was. Appreciate the well wishes and extend them back to you. Happy safe New Year to you!
Growing up in Maine I've only seen true blizzards like this perhaps a half-dozen times, but that was back in the day - late '60s, earlier 70s. I completely understand your eagerness to get out there and in it! But, this one was no joke...others did perish. I hope you found something toothsome back at home to satisfy your appetite? I hope too - you were able to find your scarf your Mom knit for you? I'm over here north of Rochester now...hoping we'll have us a real winter, too! Take good care, sure enjoyed the walk...
Thanks for chiming in with your interesting take Dave. (My name as well) This storm caught even the most hardened snowstorm lovers amongst us off guard. Me included. As children we would put on our snorkel jackets and do "explorations" into the snowstorms. We would climb snowdrifts that were as high as the power lines. This one was different. Tim Hortons never closes...always open to serve plow drivers and emergency personnel. Never expected to find them closed. Which blew my plan to take refuge there and catch my breath for the return walk home consequently. Never did find the incredible scarf my mother knitted. Very sad and precious price to pay for the walk. But I knew it had to be done, and I'd done it easily 1,000 times so I knew the path well. So, I felt very confident I could make the short walk. What I didn't anticipate, there was more snow than air. Breathing almost felt like suffocating. Facing the wind was knocking the air out of my lungs. Not so much on the walk back. Much easier. Had I started the walk with the wind at my back I might have walked further, and I believe if I had done that I might not have made it back facing the wind. Lack of oxygen was making me woozy. Yes, it was a tragic day indeed for Buffalo. My heart goes out to those who lost loved ones on that Christmas Eve of all days. Terribly sad indeed. Hopefully we'll learn from this and never repeat that tragedy again. Hopefully the next snowstorms will be a little gentler, but as always, I along with many others, truly can't wait! Thanks Dave, take care and be safe!
I knew I had to take a short walk to chronicle this storm no matter what. I'd made this very short walk so many times I knew I could do it blindfolded which in this case I practically had to as it turned out. It was very early in the storm and given the history of this area, I was surprised how quickly businesses closed up. Many did not let their employees go and kept them overnight and beyond. I really was surprised when I came upon Tim Hortons shuttered so early. I had planned on a brief rest pit there before returning. But yes, it's understandable.
Glad you were okay and thanks for the video. Your footage really shows how bad the storm was. By the way, did you make it to Tim Hortons and if so..was it open?
@@tainahernandez4825 No not at all...in fact I'm working on a short video right now as we speak that will put this thing to rest once and for all!! I'm serious! Stay tuned!!! Thanks for the laugh Taina! 😅😅
@@tainahernandez4825 Thanks Taina....I'll finish it as soon as I can. Haven't had a cold or flu in 3 years since Christmas 2019. My luck just ran out. Soon as I feel better I'll finish it. Stay well.👍👍
Hi Wanda. Because it was barely freezing or slightly above, much less wind, the snow melted very quickly especially off the roads with no drifting. The ground wasn't frozen yet either. The 7 feet was mostly melted and gone days later! 2 feet in my yard was green grass the next day. This time the winds were as high as 70mph at times with below 20 to single digit temps. The snow on the ground kept blowing back up into the air and mixing with the snow coming down. Huge road blocking drifts and severe whiteouts. 2 days non stop here. Mostly North - South roads were drifted unpassable. My street is East- West thankfully. It was scary and I've seen lots of storms. I thought I'd made a very dangerous fatal mistake taking the walk Friday. Very true thought I was done. Made it back thankfully! Thanks for asking Wanda Merry Christmas be safe!
Good Question! I did have a strong craving for one of their chocolate vanilla cream donuts and a hot dark roast coffee probably brought on by the chill. It was still early in the storm, so I thought there was a chance. Something about these storms makes you feel like a kid again too. Felt like I was suffocating about a third of the way there. I didn't believe it could be that bad I guess. Thanks for asking Phenomm
This footage is incredible. Thanks for posting it. I'll jump on the bandwagon though and say your life is worth more than a donut. Did you really think Tim Horton's would be open?
Thanks 1234! Yeah I've been taking a beating a little here for the fool factor, but I was going out there one way or another. In picking a short presumably safe trip Tim Hortons was the obvious choice for me and the chance to maybe get inside for a break. Luckily, I didn't start out walking with the wind and returning against the wind, the opposite direction. It might have turned out different. Glad to have the opportunity to have it to share thanks 1234! 👌👌
You risked your life for a hot drink at a store that EVERYONE watching knew was closed. I'll never understand the mindset of that. It makes zero sense.
Well Michael, we get so many snowstorms here it becomes old hat. Very often the weather reports are greatly exaggerated and the storms fizzle. Having been through so many...driving through sheer whiteouts many times without incident...I truly did not imagine this one was going to be much different than past years. Tim Hortons never close!!! Figured they'd be serving police and plow drivers as usual. A third of the way there I realized this one was different. I have never once had an ounce of fear during any snowstorm I've ever been in....that changed last weekend no doubt. Didn't intentionally risk my life out of foolish disregard hope that helps.
Fair enough. I am glad that you made it back safely and to tell the truth, the footage was amazing to watch.I hope everyone in your town fairs well. All my best to you, good sir.
Thanks Michael. I'm glad you expressed how you felt and gave me an opportunity to explain. I thought the video would be unwatchable. Once I reviewed it, I had the same thought. What knucklehead would venture into a blizzard for a donut? I started laughing as it seemed to add a comedic element to the video. I didn't verbalize it during the vid but at one point I did realize I'd made a possibly fatal mistake. The wind unwrapped and blew off a huge scarf my mother knitted for me which I hope to recover soon. So much snow blowing it was like a sand storm and there wasn't much air to breathe mostly snow. Felt like I was drowning. It was much scarier than I imagined no doubt. It was definitely a reality check for me and hopefully to others that watch. Thanks for your interest and well wishes Michael much appreciated.
Risking your life for a donut.😂 Shoulda called first no? One look at that weather and I coulda told ya.... you gotta want that donut pretty bad to go out in that weather! ROTFL
Well, in hindsight it was a poor decision. Probably why I'd never make manager at a Tim Hortons. I'd probably have kept a crew on to make donuts and keep some coffee hot in case someone straggled in from the blizzard. Endangering both the crew and me instead of just myself. But yeah they do make a tasty chocolate vanilla creme donut....woulda been nice. Thanks Kit Kat!😉
Awesome man.... The best description ever
Thanks Blackwater. Been out for fun walks in many a snowstorm as I'm sure you can relate. This wasn't one of 'em!
Great video, friend, but I agree with what others posted, you were definitely risking your life. Stay well, brother.

This is NO time to be trying to walk around in a storm this bad.
I realized that about a third of the way there! Found out that I'm absolutely not 20 years old anymore!
Meu Deus do céu!!!!! O que é isso o Estados Unidos congelou, misericórdia.

Masakr!
I survived thankfully!
Forget Tim Horton's, it's not worth it.
I would've ended up with an ice donut to go with my ice coffee I suppose.
In this type of weather why would you even try to go there I would suspect everything would be close.

Doing all of that for a donut& their closed? Not too smart
Ya but we live in Buffalo. We're used to moving and even staying open during heavy snow. It was a trap set by mother nature that fooled lot of people!
Is this an entry for a Darwin Award?
Ya well.....almost could've! Still haven't been "thinned form the herd" as they say!
