  • A small rural health service in Australia's Mallee region has been recognised for its breakthrough program to support people living with dementia. Nurses and carers at Rural Northwest Health's Wattle unit in Warracknabeal, Victoria, have developed a capability model of care and other techniques devised from the Montessori training method. Residents of Wattle who previously spent their days in a vegetated state in front of the TV, are now performing useful tasks and engaging in activities. The results are having an amazing effect on the residents and their families as well as the staff involved.

Staff are very patient. Great! I make activity sensory fidget items and they need to be bright and bold. I use whatever works and never worry it looks childlike.

I am new to working as an activity support worker for people with dementia and am always looking for new ideas. This is by far one of the best video I have watched as it is very person centred and realistic. Thank you.

In Colorado they opened a Montessori adult nursing home. It's similar to this video. The people who live there are happy to have things to do besides sitting in their rooms watching tv or exercise class.

    just fantastic!
I am so impressed and relieved that there are places like this. I only wish we had found somewhere as caring for my grandmother.

What you are doing is wonderful! I live in the USA and had my mother and step-father in a nursing home. Mom had Alzheimer’s and I wish the staff had offered “jobs” to the residents. Although they have passed away I know the head nurse there and if I see her I certainly will tell her about what your facility is doing. 💖💖💖💖

This is beautiful, I love it. The good things is the people care and are really getting these people with dementia to participate rather than just sitting or laying down, this is living and a dream I hoped to see one day here in my society. Thanks for sharing

Some people will criticize and say, "FREE LABOR." Truthfully they don't work fast enough for that. It's great that they're encouraging a sense of usefulness and accomplishment. Now add music therapy and see what happens! ( I'm in the USA, btw.) Love seeing different ways of caring and coping worldwide.

I want to see facilities that embrace nutrition, especially cholesterol from healthy plant sources, like coconut, avocado, flaxseed, olives and extra virgin olive oil. MCT oil can be added to coffee. Reverse weight loss, brain shrinkage, short term memory and stop sugar cravinvgs. It worked with my mom.
