Hello, 1. Does economic nexus start over each year, annually? 2. Once I reach economic nexus of 100,000 or 200 transactions, I’ll start to tax for that state, but how do I tax on the previous 100,000 or 200 made before taxes? Do I file the entire 100,000 in the next quarter?
Any software would work but TaxJar is the cheapest. If you only sell on Amazon, amazon collects and remits in 42 states. You can even attempt to not use a software if your filings are pretty simple since Amazon is responsible for all those 42 states’ sales.
Great info!!! I mainly just sell on Amazon and an extremely small amount eBay. I don’t have any software as I just use seller central. I don’t want to make tax time next year a nightmare, so I need to sign up for one of these tax programs. I’m thinking tax jar, since I’m so small?
Amazing video! Thank you for tackling such an easily overwhelming subject. As a Canadian, selling to the US and eventually filing in the US for Sales Tax, I'm concerned that TaxJar can only offer filing services to customers with a US-based bank account. Is this the case for all 3 tax apps? And do you know if having a US dollar account in Canada is accepted. I wrote to Taxjar support... but, of course, got no response! lol !
Sorry for the delay. We've been working on getting your the right answer to your question. The reason they ask for a US based bank account is for payment purposes, they usually use that information to make payment to the states through ACH. Most states also allow the option of payment through credit cards, but most states also ask if the funds are coming from out of the country as part of the payment process. I know for sure to setup TaxJar and Taxify you need to enter in US bank account information, but Avalara might have some flexibility.
I have been looking at Quaderno. Im in the UK and want to satisfy global tax requirements. Would be good if you could consider this too. I have to do quarterly VAT returns for HMRC and pay them directly, but how are EU and USA taxes paid and filed?

We understand the frustration! You might just need to register to get the resale certificates. Illinois has a special registration with no filing obligations.
We've looked into Quaderno but haven't used it as a tool yet. It doesn't seem that they ultimately file tax returns for you. But we will investigate more.
I'va just startedy business and really dont understand all this tax thing. When I try to set up collect taxes, I see only my state, does that mean I cant collect it with my EIN from other states? I talked to the accountants, everyone says you have to collect all taxes. But how? Then there is threshold, which is also confusing. I know this video is not about that, maybe you have one about taxes set up. Thank you!
Hi! I definitely agree that it's confusing. You only need to collect taxes where you have nexus - physical presence or if you pass economic nexus threshold. This might be a good video: th-cam.com/video/_WHEq2T530I/w-d-xo.html Let us know if you have further questions!
That's all you'll have to worry about at first. You'll want to watch your sales in other states, and register when you reach economic thresholds in those states. For a list of those thresholds, download our "10 Steps to Ensure Sales Tax Doesn't Burn Down Your eCommerce Business." ledgergurus.com/resources/downloads-2/10-steps-to-ensure-sales-tax-doesnt-burn-down-your-ecommerce-business/
Hello! So even if Amazon is remitting sales tax for a certain state, we still have to file correct? But how do we file without paying? Also, I have amazon and I have Shopify. What if I have sales from North Carolina (where I have nexus) in Amazon AND Shopify. How would I file if I do not have to remit the sales tax for Amazon but I have to remit for Shopify orders for the same state?
You can file a $0 return. If you have nexus in state A and you sell to state A via both Amazon and Shopify, you would register with state A first, and then turn on tax settings on both Shopify and Amazon (if it's not one of the grey states). And on your tax returns, you would report either both Amazon and Shopify sales and take a deduction for the Amazon sales (that Amazon is collecting and remitting) or only report Shopify sales depending on the state.
THANK YOU for this information. I am just building my business website on Shopify, haven’t sold anything yet. I saw that you told another commenter to just focus on your State at first. I’m in Louisiana, and I saw that they don’t worry about it really till $100,000 or 200 transactions. Should I start collecting tax after that point?
Good question. No, those thresholds are economic thresholds to reach nexus. You already have nexus in LA because you physically live there. So, you need to start paying sales tax right away for LA.
If you have an eCommerce business you are out there on the world wide web for anyone to buy your product. Anyone, anywhere in the US can potentially buy your product. If you must register in every state that collects sales tax, that would mean you would need to register in all those states before your business gets started even though you do not know who is going to buy? Am I missing something somewhere? that is daunting task if you do not know where your sales are going to come from.
No, you don't need to register in a state until your sales have passed the economic threshold. For more information on that, you can download our "10 Steps to Ensure Sales Tax Doesn't Burn Down Your eCommerce Business," that you can get here - ledgergurus.com/resources/downloads-2/10-steps-to-ensure-sales-tax-doesnt-burn-down-your-ecommerce-business/. We're getting ready to publish an updated version. When you download this version, you'll automatically be on the list to receive the new one when it comes out.
@@LedgerGurus to go off this question. So, let's say you have not met the economic threshold in a state (you are just starting out), but you do FBA and your inventory goes to a warehouse in said state. What to do then? Because you do have a presence in said state because your products are there, but you haven't sold enough items to make it to the threshold?
@@margaritaguerrero2455 Unless that inventory is in FL or MO, you don't need to worry about it yet because Amazon is required to collect tax in most states because of marketplace facilitator laws.
My business only has nexus in California. However, it appears that Amazon collects sales tax based on THEIR nexus, not mine. Then they add it to MY gross sales. This practice seems highly suspect. In any case, when filling out the CA sales tax return, I'm confused about 1) What to put as total gross sales since all are not CA sales 2) What line on the form do I deduct the sales tax that was collected and paid by Amazon to zero out any tax owed? Any help you can provide would be so appreciated.
About California filing: California wants you to report all your sales (to customers in ca and other states) on gross sales’ line, then the next page you can deduct your sales into other states as “interstate commerce” (or something like that), then deduct sales to CA collected and remitted by amazon as “other- marketplace sale” (you will need to select other, then type marketplace, then put Amazon on there). So then your tax liability will be zero.
i dont understand how to download from my ebay managed paymet info i need to use for my taxes and can i download just one report that holds all the info from the year i need for my taxes
Yes, you should be able to download the past 90 days of sales information from sell-orders, so if you need a year's worth of data, you'll need to do it by 90 day increments.
We charge fixed amount of $199 a month for marketing services (maintaining social accounts, etc). Our clients are all over the US. Do we need to collect sales tax for that?
Do you pass economic nexus threshold in any states? After that, you should look into taxability of your service in the states you have nexus in, including the state our business is registered in, to determine what your actual exposure is.
Hey! I have another question! Let’s say if I ever want to change sales tax providers can these sales tax providers you’ve mentioned, specifically Taxify, let you change sales tax providers, like if I don’t want to work with them anymore?
I don't understand whether or not I collect sales tax when my business is in a destination state and how I can determine what I should choose on whether I collect it or not.
"Destination state" means when you make a transaction, the rate of sales tax you need to charge is based on the "ship to" location of the customers. If you have nexus in a state and your product/service is taxable, then you need to collect sales tax after you register with the state.

Hi, I have some doubts regarding Taxify. Is it possible to integrate Taxify with Wordpress Woocommerce to calculate Sales tax automatically for an -ecommerce store?
@@MauriceM_R No, you have to go to Avalara to create an account. If you're just getting started, you may want to check out TaxJar and Taxify, too. Avalara is a really robust program, but it can be overkill and overly pricy for a small company. The other two are for smaller companies and are much more affordable.
Shopify has their in-house sales tax engine to calculate sales tax (sales tax engines don't help with filing and remitting sales tax). Shopify also has an exclusive partnership with Avalara.
Reconcile sales tax is to compare sales tax calculated by the state’s portal and the actual sales tax collected. Over-collection needs to be remitted and under-collection needs to be expensed. Vendor’s discounts that certain states offer can be categorized as “other income”
Digital products' sales tax taxability is very overwhelming, I totally understand.
@@LedgerGurus Thanks for your reply. I will check with Avalara.

What’s your opinion on Quaderno?

This might be a good video: th-cam.com/video/_WHEq2T530I/w-d-xo.html
Let us know if you have further questions!
I’m in Texas. Do I only have to worry about reporting Texas sales tax to Texas? . I have not started the business yet and was thinking of Shopify.

@twentyfivekgplants tomake1kgbeef I'm sorry! Let me know if you still need help!
How do I Integrate taxify with square space?
I believe you'll need to reach out to Taxify to use a customized API to connect with Square Space.
How the heck to you get on a phone call with Taxify ? Nearly impossible to even find any information on them

C’è un link per fare disdetta con Avalara ?
Hi! Are you asking how much it costs to cancel Avalara?
Small business owner, would i also need to collect sales tax from all other states or just the state im in?(az)
Hi! You need to collect sales tax in the states you have nexus in - physical presence or if you pass the economic nexus threshold.
Hey! I have another question! Let’s say if I ever want to change sales tax providers can these sales tax providers you’ve mentioned, specifically Taxify, let you change sales tax providers, like if I don’t want to work with them anymore?
Yes, it's always an option to change sales tax tools. You may experience some switching costs/pains but it may be worth it depending on your needs.

Is the filing fee per state? I sample I sell to 50 states so 50 x 25(taxjar filing rate) =1250 in filing expense?

@@MauriceM_R No, you have to go to Avalara to create an account. If you're just getting started, you may want to check out TaxJar and Taxify, too. Avalara is a really robust program, but it can be overkill and overly pricy for a small company. The other two are for smaller companies and are much more affordable.
Does Shopify have a sales tax app?
Shopify has their in-house sales tax engine to calculate sales tax (sales tax engines don't help with filing and remitting sales tax). Shopify also has an exclusive partnership with Avalara.

You have to reconcile sales tax!? How do you do that? :/
Reconcile sales tax is to compare sales tax calculated by the state’s portal and the actual sales tax collected. Over-collection needs to be remitted and under-collection needs to be expensed. Vendor’s discounts that certain states offer can be categorized as “other income”

I am digital product seller and it is overwhelming so how to pay taxes around the world? I don't ship any products, any suggestions on apps for this?
Digital products' sales tax taxability is very overwhelming, I totally understand. The first question I would ask before stressing yourself out about how to pay taxes around the world is where do you have nexus (an obligation to file), ask yourself about your physical and economic nexus and then layer in the taxability part to get the exposure amount. After you know how many states you actually need to register and file in, we can look at which app works best!

If Amazon already collects and remits sales taxes, is it right that all I need to do is use one of the apps and file them with the state (e.g. California)?
If you are based in CA and all you sell is through amazon, then you need to file an informational return with CDTFA reporting the sales through amazon, but you shouldn’t owe any taxes as amazon has already remitted them.
