The Radio Shack DX-394 General Coverage Receiver. Is This The Best Shortwave Radio Ever Made?

  • Thanks to a fan of the channel, I was able to acquire a Radio Shack DX-394. This was Radio Shacks last base type Shortwave, and many consider it to be the best one ever made. The fact that I now own it and have the opportunity to play with it is incredible. I never thought I'd get to hold one of these and so far it's living up to the hype.
While not as impressive looking as my DX-302, it's simplicity when it comes to tuning, and the ability to enter a frequency directly is a certain plus.
Stay tuned for a comparison of these two great radios as well as a few scanning videos and thanks to all the fans of Farpoint for making this happen!

That's really cool that you were gifted a DX-394. They weren't very popular in their day due to the poor performance of the "A" version. Your "B" version is much improved, listed for $399.99, but closed out for less than $100 new. Now has become desirable. Many Mods available to improve performance, the only mod I performed to my "B" version was to remove the Tuning Dial and fill the void in said dial with lead fishing shot. Adds some weight to an otherwise wimpy Tuning Dial. Much improves the "feel" of the radio. Enjoy! KG7M

I picked up one last winter really cheap. After a bit, I shipped mine off to Lowbander for the mods and, I love this radio even more. I own quite a few hi end potable sw radios and a Yaesu frg 8800, But, i use this one on a daily basis. It fits nicely on my table. In fact, I am listening to it while i'm typing this. [ 27.185 CB ch 19 ] Congrats on the rig.

I remember getting mine years and years ago. I still have it in the ham shack, but can’t remember the last time I actually used it. What sold me on purchasing the 394 was the all LCD display and the direct entry of frequencies as you stated “ Like a Scanner” It wasn’t a bad little receiver and worked quite well... Before that, I used my Kenwood TS-520 for shortwave listening. A heavy big beast that was all analog tuning.
I still have 3 different versions of the 520.
The 394 was a pleasure, just punch your frequency in, mode, and start listening.
Plus it was a heck of a lot easier to move around.

I have three versions of the same radio the 394 the 394 rev A and the394 rev B The only difference in the rev A was the filtering of the power supply,, (incorrect values) The rev B made it more cleaner on receiving esp on SSB,, There are a lot of "performance improvements" for the 394 and I have done them all... over a dozen,,, still best from Radio Japan! 73

And I just checked in two copies of "Passport to World Band Radio" that I have, 2007 and 2009, and they give this radio a whopping 2.5 out of 5 stars, and in fact in BOTH editions, it's the LOWEST rated table top receiver that they review.
