    Q&A: You mentioned in one of your Drydock episodes that the Nelson was a relatively efficient design; how efficient would you say the Richelieu and the Dunkerque compared to the Nelson as ships with their main armaments concentrate around the bow? What are the design advantages and disadvantages between the early Richelieus compared to a more conventional layout like that of the Gascogne?

    Suggestion For A Ship To Review: HMS Frisky. While she carried no guns and her tenure with the Royal Navy was short, under the red Canadian ensign this small ship and crew gave outsized value to the Allied cause during World War II by providing deep-sea salvage support to convoy vessels damaged by gunfire, torpedo hits, collisions, gales and other hazards. Thanks, de AC4AQ

    • @kc4cvh
      @kc4cvh 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, at war's outbreak Foundation Franklin (ex-Frisky) was equipped with guns, the armament consisting of two rifles. One crewman said "We could hold off a herd of seals if they got real ornery-like".

    well a suggestion for another alternative history:
    what is it with the H- class of german BBs (Z plan)?
    there are some dubious informations floating around on the internet and the most silly one talked about H 44 designed with bulkheads for nuclear warfare
    I know i is ridiculous but while we´re talking about german engineering here, we just might have a good laugh at it.
    So, how realistic were the plans for the H-class?
    Would they have been of any real use or just waste of resources?
    Were the designs up to date for their year of planning?
    Also what about the guns of like half a meter of caliber? - Realistic or german nonsense design?

    • @kuhluhOG
      @kuhluhOG 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      well, but one thing, Rheinmetal didn't develop a 48cm gun but a 45cm gun, like it was planned with actually (although not know for a long time, that's why so many still say 48cm)
      pretty much everything H42 and up was just design studies if it was actually theoretically doable

      H-39 was quite realistic. Just an enlarged Bismarck. The design was finalized and even laid down (though cancelled almost immediately afterward). H-41 was just the next step up from that, and still fairly plausible.
      H-43 and H-44 were purely design studies, with no actual consideration of building them. They were just to appease typical Hitler fantasies.

    Design suggestion for another alternate history. (This might be difficult because I can't remember the source.) Kaiser Wilhelm II suggested designs for armored cruisers and pre-dreadnought's. He created top down drawings like you have made in the Rule the Waves game software. I don't know if the Kaiser suggested gun calibers for his ships, I just remember they had lots of guns and wing turrets.

    Nicely written background, and a fun ship. Would the turtleback deck - AoN belt combination be useful in reality? Seems like a neat idea, but also seems like something that, if it were useful, someone might have thought of in reality as well. Then again, someone might have, and I just don't know about it.

    • @Drachinifel
      @Drachinifel  6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      It seems a slight evolution on Bismarck's protection in real life. So would likely have similar strengths and weaknesses.

    • @eivindhelgetun3254
      @eivindhelgetun3254 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      If you intend to go full min-maxing on it, then it's not an ideal combination. The turtleback was included for flavors sake, as I couldn't think of any German capital ships that didn't have one in some form or another, save for the never-built Mackensens. That said, the strengths of a turtleback would be more beneficial to a battleline slugger like this, backed as it would be by a RN-rivaling Hochseeflotte, than on the real life, lone surface raiders which would be screwed if they took any hits that slowed them down in the slightest.

    I have been watching your videos for a couple months now and you have the best videos on warships on youtube. I have a question for the Drydock, I was doing research on the Mogador class destroyers and discovered that there was further developments for the class in the Kléber class and the Bruix class, however I couldn't find any information on the Bruix class destroyers. Is this a real class or not?

    • @Drachinifel
      @Drachinifel  6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It is conjecturaly real. The Kleber class was ordered, and a follow on class to a modified Kleber design was also authorised following them. One of those was name Bruix, so although I cannot fond anything definitively calling them Bruix class destroyers in a quick search of my sources, a distinct class of destroyers including Bruix were planned, so we might as well call them by that name.

      While a battleship is a lot better than a mobile home to ride out a hurricane, Katrina in 2005 did quite a bit of damage to the USS Alabama. She's still a floater and, even though she got extra lashings before the storm hit, she shifted almost 75 feet within her anchorage and shipped enough water to develop an 8 degree list. That list is still slowly being corrected today as the water is being pumped out. Her masts, radar antennas, general upperworks had quite a large amount of superficial but still expensive damage. The large hanger and outdoor aircraft display was nearly totally destroyed. There was a volunteer crew and their families aboard, and they describe it as pretty scary experience. If you're anywhere near Mobile, a visit to her is almost mandatory for ship nerds. You can see more sections of the ship and more of her equipment than any other museum battleship.

    I apologise for the long answer but I did have a good long think about this design and I do have serious doubts about this ship as it has the same displacement and armament as the Nelson class but is also 3 knots faster considering the weight saved in the Nelson by having all the guns forward and thus a much smaller armoured area a ship with a conventional ABX layout as shown in this ship and used on other treaty BBs like the KGV and the NC would have to have considerably less armour. If you look at the treaty battleships you will see that the faster treaty battleships when compared to the Nelsons had to sacrifice either Armour, Firepower or both to keep under the limit this can bee seen when you compare the protection and armament of the KGV to the Nelsons (10 14 inch guns instead of 9 16s and the deck dropping from a max of 6.25 inch to 5.88 and turret faces dropping from 16 inches to 12.75 inches) as well as when you compare the Armour of the North Carolina class BBs to Nelson (Nelson having 14 inch belt compared to NC's 12 and NC having a maximum of 5 inches of Deck armour NC was significantly worse armoured than KGV and both had less armour the Nelson) or the Nagato that sacrificed 1 16 inch gun and a lot of armour to maintain 25 knots whilst being 39000 tons in reality, only the Yamato Class BB had more armour the Nelson class. This design is simply too good for 1921 and could not have been built within the limits of the Washington treaty it shows none of the sacrifices other ships had to make to stay within the limit. Personally with the technical limitations of1921 and the size limitations of Washington the the only way I could think a ship could be under 35,000 tons and travel at 26 knots (3 Knots faster than the Nelson) whilst being armed with 9 16 inch guns in an ABX layout would be to have an armour protection of a Belt of around 12 inches and the deck of 3-4 inches max and turret faces of about 12-13 inches) Armour levels slightly but not significantly better than HMS Hood (better belt by 1 inch better deck by 1 inch and more evenly spread out but worse turret facings) but without the Hoods extra 5 knots and being 10,000 tons lighter than Hood. Such a BB would be a death-trap in any WW2 era situation as that level of Armour couldn't stand up to a BL-15 Inch Mark I on he QEs or Hood without serious risk, let alone the BL 16-Inch Mark I of the Nelson or the 16/45 of the American ships. Let alone the areal threat. In a fight against any of the other 4 main treaty era BBs Nelson it could run away from but it could not stand up to the punishment given out by. Nagato it could defeat and both KGV and the North Carolina could not only dish out levels of punishment the Wotan couldn't survive they could easily outlast the Woten in a fight and would be fast enough to force any engagement on its terms as they could out run it if needed or close the distance. A much more likely layout would be that would allow survivable armour levels and would follow the German practice of having smaller guns but heavy armour would be to use triple 38 cm SK L/45 guns (same guns as used on the Bayern) at which point it would be launching a shell of 750 kgs only 30 kgs more than the 114 inch guns on KGV but with one less gun, 129 kg less than the 15 inch guns on the QE's R's Hood Renown and Repulse but with one more gun and 180 kgs less than the 16 inch shells of the Nelson (19% smaller) and the 1200 kg shells of the American 16/45 would be a whole different ball game being 40% bigger. Eve using the smaller guns you could only feasibly increase the belt to 14 inches a deck of 4.5 inches and turret faces of 14 inches if you wanted to get 26 Knots such a ship would be an improvement over the Bayern and would be better than the QE and the Nagato but would still be the 2nd weakest of the interwar era BBs.

    • @eivindhelgetun3254
      @eivindhelgetun3254 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thing is, it doesn't have the same armament as the Nelson. 15 vs 16 inches. It also sacrifices significant amounts of deck armor compared to all other treaty battleships, and have less well-protected turrets than most. Main armor belt is thicker, but not inclined, so it'll be both less efficient and lighter for the same thickness as the Nelsons belt. Nelson was designed for 23 knots, but were known to surpass this quite handily, with Rodney doing 25 on worn machinery during the hunt for the Bismarck. I also think you overestimate how much shorter an ABC turret layout make the armored citadel, as it's still sizeable on the Nelson.
      While the Wotan has its fair share of trade-offs, it's still an overall strong design, but probably not unrealistically so in a hypothetical world where the Germans have caught up with or even surpassed the Brits in naval engineering and shipbuilding, which was the premise I was working with.

    The wonderful thing about custom dreadnought types is that you can have lots of guns on it and it will look normal. I know someone who made a design that looked like SMS Kaiser with extra rear turrets like those on Wyoming and pre-refit Ise.
    Also, if you'll do another one, where do I submit it? I'm interested.

    When this video popped up I was baffled: SMS Wotan - did the imperial German navy have a Wotan?
    The funny fact is it actually had, sort of: SMS Odin. Odin/Oden is the nordic name for Wotan (or Woden if you prefer the English name) so you would rather expect a ship with that name in the Danish, Swedish or Norwegian navies. Indeed the Swedish navy had a HM Pansarbåt Oden at the time, a ship remarkably similar to SMS Odin actually.
    I have no idea why the Germans elected non-german names for Odin and her sister SMS Ægir (as Jane spelled the name, SMS Ägir sounds a more probable spelling to me; either way it's the old norse sea god).

      Not as far-fetched a ratio as you might think. From the top of my head, both Nelson and South Dakota are pretty darn close. Rodney managed 25 knots when chasing the Bismarck, so it's not out of the question that a design with over 30,000 more horsepower could make 26.

      D.K. Brown and Norman Friedman would be my got recommendations.
      In my opinion Brown gives a better general overview and then doves in to very specific issues that are quite unique insights.
      Friedman gives a lot more general details about the technology on the ships themselves, so is generally more technical, but lacks some of the insights Brown has, which is understandable as he is a historian look back whereas Brown was someone who helped actually build the ships and talked to those who designed earlier vessels.

    The reason Zimmerman never got his telegram out was because his wife happened to hear too much talk about Peace in the East _(Friede im Osten,)_ and misinterpreted it as _Frieda im Osten._ Neighbors reported overhearing Frau Z complaining often about Herr Z's dalliances, and this misunderstanding didn't help things. "Frieda im Osten, Freja im Norden, 2 Angela im Süden, and last week's trash is still in the kitchen."
    Long story short, ol' Z decided it was time to stop servicing foreigners. He resigned his position in short order, and the couple bought an orchard in the country, where Frau Z could better manage the apples that Herr Z's nose got stuck between.

      I vaguely knew about the competition, but titleing the episode with the ship name first lends itself to being assumed the ship is more historical or at least an existing paper ship design that is obscure and interesting.

    1. Germany simply could not build anything larger than the H-39 class in any reasonable time frame, especially when you consider both the production of guns and high speed machinery. Add in the demands of a large air force and navy and the limitations of such shore infrastructure such as slips, dry docks and the Kiel Canal, these fantasy ships are just that. 2. The continuation, initially, of the protection system of the "Baden" in H-39 and H-41 shows the German Navy did not understand the improvements in effective range that aerial spotting and later, radar fire control would provide. This system of armor was designed for North Sea engagements at "close" ranges, below 15,000 yards, where the majority of the hits would be broadside and not deck. Over 15,000 yards, the percentage of hits on the deck and the penetration angles of shells improves, so that deck armor becomes far more important than belt armor, as the Germans realized with the deck armor of the H-44, which was also a reaction to the steady increase in the size of AP bombs. many fan designs or fanboy support of large capital ships ignore the limitations of industrial infrastructure. For instance, until 1937, Japanese shipbuilders were limited to a launch displacement of 40,000 tons. After a massive effort between 1933 and 1937, this was raised to 55,000 tons. Anything larger than this would not fit on any slip or in any dry dock in Japan until 1965. Even more, the IJN was limited to four high power (~150,000shp) machinery installations every eighteen months. It could lay down two "Yamatos" and two "Shokakus" but nothing else until those slips were clear and the machinery delivered. This is why no more heavy cruisers were completed except IJN Ibuki from 1939 and 1945. The machinery installations were going to the "Unryu" class medium fleet carriers. Britain faced similar restrictions on ordnance and machinery, so it chose aircraft carriers over heavy cruisers from 1937 on (these restrictions existed in 1921, when there were only four building slips available to build G3 and N3 class capital ships with and none able to build ships larger than these designs).
