    Its true that the companies who sell RWH is charging exorbitant prices for filters which would never filter out the dissolved clay, eventually settles down in the sump. Keeping that in mind I have designed a sand, jelly, charcoal filter with mosquito mesh separating them. It takes good amount of time to collect materials and assemble them but its worth every paisa. I really appreciate your time and efforts to share the knowledge.

    I have assisted more than 100 houses while RWH structures were installed at Chennai. Now we have done for a temple & allowed to deliver the rain water so collected in the terrace of temple pond near Karaikudi. In the absence of a schematic diagram I am not in a position to visualise the on-site conditions. Assuming we have separate channels or pipe lines laid down, that is one for the Rain Water and the other one for draining the Abhishekam Water. In such a case we can fix a Water Filter (large size) in the Abhishekam pipe line or channel and that filter chamber can be got filled with FINE RIVER SAND and ACTIVATED CHARCOAL instead of mosquito net alone. In this method the Abhishekham water will get filtered to a large extent. However, the filtration speed will be slow and the inflow and outflow may not be in the same proportion.
      Hope this meets your requirements. If you need any further clarification let me know.
      Thank you and all the best.

      @@gunaslenspeaks6795 The temple roof water is taken down through 3 pipes of 8 inch size. Then it mixes with the abishekam water in the chamber and then through the underground temple construction drain it goes out of the temple premises. Hence we are unable to separate them, due to underground drain system. The rain water alone can't be taken out before the chamber, due to the fact that underground drain is of stone construction with a size of approximately 4 inch depth & 6 inch breadth. The length is about 50 feet. Please suggest me how to harvest that rainwater & conserve in the pond. As such we have fixed 4 inch PVC pipes all around the temple from 28 delivery points & channelled in to the temple pond.

      @@annamalaim8304 In the instant case, the Abhishekham Water coming out from the Moolasthanam will have to be filtered before it's collected in the drain chamber. Is it possible to fix/construct a filter chamber with sand and charcoal to collect the Abhishekham Water for filtration?!!
      Normally the outlet from moolasthanam will be atleast one foot above the ground level and so I think a filter or a filtration chamber can be fixed there and the filtered water from this chamber can be allowed to flow into the main drain chamber.

    Hi, thanks for a great concept and presentation. I've been trying to do something like this for my own 90 year old sloped roof bungalow and well.
    My main question is whether we can improve the efficiency of the filter by introducing sand and activated charcoal in the filter tube. Currently the only filter is the mosquito mesh. However this will not be adequate to treat the bird droppings which accumulate on the roof and then flow down with the water. So if we can add caps at both end of the filter and instead of keeping it hollow add a layer of fine river sand and top with a layer of activated charcoal. This will remove additional micro particles and also remove the odors from the rain water.
    Awaiting your response! Thanks!

    • @gunaslenspeaks6795
      @gunaslenspeaks6795  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you.
      Well I feel that adding sand and activated charcoal in the filter tube itself would drastically reduce the filtration speed and thus may lead to clogging of the filter unit besides leading to stagnation of Rain Water on the terrace as the inflow and the outflow would be disproportionate. In your case presuming that the RW is collected through the pipe channels placed at the edge of slopped roof, the copious RW collected during heavy rains may stagnate on those channels leading them to overflow/spill over.
      In my opinion, we can collect the filtered RW into a Syntex (2k or 3k litres) tank at the ground floor (1st stage) and then release the filtered RW from that tank to another filtration unit (filled with sand and activated charcoal) (2nd stage) connected to the outlet at the bottom level (to ensure adequate water pressure/force) of the Syntex tank in a graduated manner and the outlet from that 2nd RWHF can be connected to the open well. In this process the speed of inflow from terrace can be maintained and the speed of outflow can be regulated so that stagnation, overflow/spill of harvested RW can be avoided./minimised.
      Hope this would meet your requirements.
      Wish you all the very best.

      @@gunaslenspeaks6795 Thank you so much for your prompt response! I agree that the concern you have voiced was also playing at the back of my mind... A marine engineer friend who is helping me with this, suggested that we could make two filters, one within the other... One could be the nylon mosquito mesh and the other can be a very fine mesh made of bronze.. If we can find one. The SS ones invariably will rust within a year or so. We are going shopping today for these items so let's see what we find. Another problem our plumber pointed out is that using pvc in combination with upvc leads to problems in that the joints between the two don't fit exactly. Getting pvc valves is another problem in our rural area. So let's see what we can find!

      You may but it would depend on the quantum of the RW collected from the terrace, if it's of small quantity then there should not be any problem but if it's copious then the borewell might overflow.

    Hello Sir,
    Thank you for such a valuable video. I am planning to implement it on my house. How can we use it to recharge the borewell. I meant to ask shall we just put the outlet of this filter to the top of borewell ?

    • @gunaslenspeaks6795
      @gunaslenspeaks6795  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. It would depend on the size of the terrace that is the catchment area. If the area is more than 1000 sft then it would not be advisable to direct the inflow from the terrace to the bore as the borewell may overflow with the copious rain water collected from the terrace. If you do not have an open well then I would suggest collecting of filtered rain water in a 2000 or 3000 litre Syntex tank placed in the ground floor and then can regulate the outflow to the borewell in a graduated manner please. In this way you will have a reserve tank with 2k or 3k litres of filtered water. Besides you can also connect an outlet from the Syntex tank to your sump (if you have one) and can regulate the outflow once the sediments in the filtered rain water settles down in the Syntex tank.

      @@gunaslenspeaks6795 Thank you very much for your response Sir. Very much appreciated. My terrace size would be around 1400 sqft I guess. Here in this area, instead of having a Syntex tank, we make an undreground water tank to store the water. I can channelise the water flow into that tank and then make a setup to properly flow the water into borewell correct ?

    • @gunaslenspeaks6795
      @gunaslenspeaks6795  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ashishbisht9 I understand that you have a sump and in that case what you have proposed would work fine if there is a level difference between the underground tank and borewell mouth. If both are on the same height/level then we only the water overflowing from the underground tank will flow into borewell or we may have to install a water pump exclusively for this purpose. In case of the Syntex tank we can place it above the ground so that gradiant would be available and the water would flow down automatically.

      You can go in for 4" pipe for core filter and 6" pipe for the outer shell as I did. Alternatively, you can go in for 3" & 5" pipes as well and the size of the other fittings will also vary accordingly. Its preferable to have 2" difference in the size of the pipes. You can, but in that case during heavy rains possibilities of the RWH Filter getting chocked exists as the gap between the core and the outer shell all around will be hardly 1/2" only. If you can go in for 6" outer pipe it would be preferable.
      Alternatively you can fix a 4" to 3" reducer at the mouth of the drain pipe and thus reduce the size of the drain pipe mouth to 3" in which case you can go in for a 5" pipe for the outer shell.
      Hope this suffice. All the best 👍.

    • @gunaslenspeaks6795
      @gunaslenspeaks6795  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@eranupp It can be done and in such a case I would suggest 3 layers of mosquito net on the core of the filter as against 2 layers to improve the filtration efficiency.
      However, I apprehend that during heavy rains when the Rain Water harvested is copious, the Bore Well may get filled and overflow as the speed at which the ground gets charged would not be equal to the inflow thereof. Hence, I would suggest that if feasible, try to divert a portion of the Rain Water harvested to any open well or to a sump or to a soak pit surrounding the Bore Well or to a storage tank wherein we can resort to graduated release of the water into the Bore Well.
      Hope this would help. Wish you all the best.
