Carl was not a good high school sprinter, he only ran relays. In fact he was only offered a scholarship because he was a great long jumper. Even in college he wasn’t a great sprinter as Burrell was the top guy at Houston.

No, you're wrong. If an athlete steps in the outer lane on the turns, it is forgiven as long as he doesn't infringe any other athlete. That track judges scrutinized it and adjudicated in Carl's favor. That is normal; it happens all the time.

If you step on the line outisde the lane that's considered longer and therefore its not an advantage. It's in the iaaf rules. I checked it when justin gatlin stepped outside the lane at worlds in 2013.
