It's called kingsday now, it's on the kings birthday :) The reason that we celebrated the queens birthday on her mothers birthday is: The queens birthday is at the 31st of january, but in Holland, it's way too cold to put your shit in front of your house in january.
+Ruudos Limburg and Noord-Brabant indeed do... but the shops aren't closed and the children aren't off more than the other provinces are. Krokusvakantie is basically northern Carnavalsvakantie
hahaha, thats just another weird thing in Holland! A few moths ago I stood near a "rookpaal" at Den Haag/The Hague Central Station and a German man and woman came to me. The man asked what the sign on the pole meant: A pole with an ashtray and a sign on top of a cigaret with a red line through it,, and around that pole all Dutch people come to smoke xD It must be very confusing for foreigners to understand xD

The funniest part about Hemelvaart is that the day after Hemelvaart is also a holiday. Not because something important happened that day. No, it's only because Hemelvaart is always on a Thursday (apparently Jesus defied the laws of time or something), and then 'it would be stupid' to have a free day (Hemelvaart), then go to work, and then have free time again (Weekend). We have the weirdest 'holidays'. Especially if we talk about Pinksteren and Hemelvaart and all those other strange Christian holidays that we still only celebrate as an excuse for more free time (because as far as I know, the majority of NL is athiest).
@Superpiair1 atheist means you don't believe in a god or gods. A theist believes in a god or gods. The a part means non/not/anti, it is simply the negative version.
No dude The Netherlands is the official name of the country. Holland used to be the most important province, and has been split up into 2 provinces north and south holland.
ik vind het leuk dat iemand daar grappen over maakt xP! ik vind koningendag ook vaag, ik moet ook naar school hoor!Maar ik vind het niet erg om vrij te zijn hoor op die dagen xP
yes it is great. Being able to laugh about yourself and your own culture, is a sign of maturity in my opinion. And, talking abour Koninginnedag, I am now living in New Zealand, and the Queen's birthday here is...... the first Monday in June. Every year :). It is really true. Wonder what John would say about that
Oh, how I love him... Makes me so glad to be Dutch XD And actually, there ARE foreigners who watch it. I know for a fact, cause I keep showing it to people XD
Today it was Kings' day and I saw all the shit again that everyone collected and I saw that violin playing girl too. At that moment I once again connected my memories back to this video of John Fealey... perfect description it was. LMAO
A few days ago we were in physics class and we were already done with the homework so we were just talking and funnily enough we were taking about holidays. So we were in class and my friend goes ‘what’s hemelvaart again.’ To which I replie ‘ it’s the heaven went to jesus’ and then my other friend went ‘ wait, heaven went to jesus? Is it some sort of a boat or something like that?’ To which my first friend replied ‘it’s a speedboat and jesus had to run over the water to catch up with it.’ And that was the day that We figured out heaven was a speedboat during physics.
Yeah indeed, we don't have so many days off. But we have different holidays, because most countries have days off to celebrate their historical adventures, and we just celebrate Biblical ones and a little extra... And then there are politicians that want to give us less....
yes most are religious but the one that meant a lot to a many dutch ( and wasnt christian ) was cancelled ........... liberation day .... i guess christians dont care about that
The funny thing about this is that it makes you recognize the ridiculousness of your own culture. It makes you understand that as wierd as they are, we are just as wierd.
2018 and still funny. It still cracks me up when I can tell tourists, in full party outfit, in Amsterdam city centre, that the event was 3 days ago cuz we "changed the date" again. So all you, ravers, boozehounds, mad dogs and other complete bastards come to the Netherlands make sure it's for April 27th! We need you here to make Kingday the most Epic party a country has ever had. You'll love it ❤️
And now since a view years its Kingsday, haha. Beatrix kept the party on here mothers birthday date because she was born in January. And thats a sucky weather month even for the Netherlands, haha. I watch this every year, it's becoming a tradition. Don't care how old this video is.
Love the Brits for their great sense of humor. Wonder how he puts this kind of story in british comedy when telling about the Trooping of Colour day in the UK. Celebrating your Queen's "official" birthday, right? Not on the same date as her true birthdate, right? Fun and folly with pomp & glory and military troops, right? ... hihi ;) Cheers!
I'm fairly impressed by the way he pronounces Dutch words.

I still play it and remember the first time i showed it to a couple of gielfriends of mine. They all cried. Priceless

When the shops are closed, you can't take the champignon and put it in a zakje.
