There are a lot of thematic similarities in Touhou project and Madoka Magica: Almost all girl cast Characters based in mythology and folklore (Japanese Mythology and European Fairy Tales) LGBTQ subtext Complex rules regarding magical use (Spell card rules for Touhou and Enthalpy/entropy for Madoka) Seems innocent on the surface, lots of underlying tragedy and sadness
