I have this device. I’ve used this device. I have one of the SanDisk SSD’s just like the one you have. I realize that this is a down and dirty quick video about if it works but I would like to just offer some experiences I had with these items. I wasted tremendous amounts of time, energy, and yes patience trying to archive data from several devices, iPads and iPhones which were FULL of photos and videos of children and grandchildren from the last few years. After some research I found this Apple device and purchased it along with a couple of storage products. As mentioned before the SanDisk SSD and a SanDisk USB thumb drive. Both of these storage devices had only out of the box files on them. As in this video I connected the Lightning connector of the device to the iPad or iPhone then the charging connector to the larger of Apple’s charging blocks (not the little square one that comes with the phones, but the larger one that comes with the iPads). At this point I should be ready to DUPLICATE the procedures on this video. I was able to do these things with some limited success. Here is what I found. After proving what was done on this video to be able to be performed with “A” file (photo, video) or two I decided the device and procedures I was using worked and continued on with this belief until EVIL reared its ugly head. I CREATED thru the Files program a folder on the storage device and transferred 10 files into the “SUB” folder I created - - still no problems. Giddy at the fact that this was so streamlined and effortless and I would soon be able to have backups of all my precious files that eat up all of my iPhone, iPad, and YES even my MacPro that I have been putting off doing for way too long I started to move more and more files in this manner. By this I mean I went from moving files 10 at a time to 20 the 50 then 100. Everything seemed “to good to be true” as far as getting done quickly and easily. It just took longer times to transfer depending on the amount of files and size of files being transferred, for instance if a group of files contained quite a few longer videos then it took longer. Nothing wrong or unexpected with this fact just that once I got to some SERIOUS amounts of data to be transferred the iPhone or iPad would sleep and this usually ended up in disaster see below. THEN disaster strikes. For reasons I still do not understand I got an error message (sorry forgot what it was) and was forced to disconnect everything and begin again. Keep in mind that I had “ALREADY TRANSFERRED” I thought HUNDREDS of photos and videos. To my SHOCK however when everything died and was disconnected and then reconnected I went to the Files App and located my device again expecting to pick up my backing up activities where I had left off before the lock up of the process. The lightning port and the USB-C port look alot alike. Just by looking, it seems like you would directly plug the USB-C cable from your drive in the "little hole" that seems the same as the cable. I know in the video you specify it's for the power source, and that it's a lighting connection, but that may still be confusing for a beginner. It would be more helpful if you specify that you actually need TWO adapters: the actual white adapter you are reviewing, and then one to go from USB-C to USB-3 (or as a rookie would describe: the regular USB we are used to seeing). I saw you do this and figured it out, but a beginner would not have caught on to that right away. Apologies, if someone else already called this out in a previous comment.
Have you tried plugging a USB Hub / Card reader so you can plug an SD card and an extreme SSD drive at the same time to move files between the two external storage devices?
So, I did a lot of testing with my iPad Pro 10.5 first gen. Bought a SD card reader only on amazon. This works fine all the time. I also had a Belkin dual lightning adapter. The SD card ready works through this also. I can charge and use the SD card reader at the same time. I bought the Apple lightning to USB 3.0 adapter. It works fine with SSD and not HHD. My USB 2.0 flash drives work without having power running through it. I tried to use my USB flash drive 3.0 128gb in my car having the power connected to a cigarette lighter adapter and there wasn’t enough power. So just a heads up that to use SSD and/or USB 3.0 flash drives, you have to use enough power coming in. Not all power adapters supply enough amps to run it. (Probably need the 2.1amps and not just the 1 amp)... that would be a good test for you to do.
I also have an iPad Pro 10.5. What exactly do I need to purchase in order for me to transfer files from the USB thumb drive to my iPad Pro 10.5? Do I just need to purchase the following two items? 1) Apple Lightning to USB 3.0 adapter 2) power bank
Thanks for your video. What I have learned thus far is that your power source needs to be the power cube that came with the iPad (the bigger cube that you connect your lighting cable to) using an iPhone cube won't supply enough power. Oddly enough, some older usb flash drives will work without a power source. For me, it was a 4GB Transcend and a 8GB Lexar. My 32GB SanDisk Cruzer Blade requires power. I can only assume that this has something to do with the actual capacity of the usb flash drives. Im still trying to find a way to use a portable power bank/brick to make all of this work. Maybe you have some ideas? I have tried the two that I own and they do not supply enough power. Again, my guess here would be that the portable power bank/brick needs to have the same output as the iPad power cube.
Thank you, currently using a 10.5 and it works just fine for my needs, dont see a reason to up grade yet. However, was concerned about being able to use external drives....this helps a lot. Thank you from Montana
If you want to use mechanical drives (HDD) you’ll need to use “Powered USB hubs”. These are USB hubs that has their own power supply. :) Try to search for this in Amazon. The brand U-Green has one.
This question came to my mind as I read "USB-C" in the title, too! ;-) But this Apple adapter has no USB-C port, but an USB-A port. An adapter (USB-C female with USB-A male) will make the physical connection possible, but Apple will surely only allow their HDMI adapter! ;-)
Very nice job with this review, thank you so much! All I needed to do was attach my usb-3 thumb drive to the iPad Pro tablet... you've shown lots of great options. All the best!
Well when I clicked on this video I was shocked to see you..... hey you always have great video’s and information!!!!!! I must be looking at the right place to better myself.
@@DarrellCraig Hi Darrell, yep, it's a small world! :) I'm planning on using m Ipad Pro to see if I can do "live" Question and Answer sessions on my channel :)
I think he made this video for people who would prefer to use a hard drive. My hard drives hold way more space than my thumb drives so I appreciate an external solution.
I was gonna say try the Apple adapter. Apple had us covered for once. You can also use a powered usb splitter to use a keyboard and mouse, as well as connect midi devices, your camera or usb headphones as long as it’s powered. It’s a little bit extra but that’s why the iPad Pro has usb c the 7.5 Watt power out takes care of the lack of power from the device like in this video.
Bro you gotta pay attention to your previous videos comments, we told you how to make this work with similar apple or non apple devices, basically use a powered USB hub between the USB storage device and the apple lighting adapater, this will allow for the power to distributed to the ports correctly, the iOS adapters dont provide power unless its for low power devices like up to 2.5 watts, which is 5 volts x .5 Amps. The reason it works with the newer ipad pros with USB C is because USB Cs standard forces it to be better in power delivery, even works with smaller portable spinning harddrives.
June hey, i dont understand about this usb powered hub. I tried using my ext hdd with the beta ipad os and it worked. Now it does not detect or power my ext hdd at all, with the latest ipad os. What do i need to get it work??
Great. I like very much that you correct yourself and that you work out questions a lot of non techie people are asking--and that you are willing to try some lesser known accessories (for instance the Procase from several weeks ago that works great for me for travel)
So at 3:30 you use what is that? a type C to USB A adapter? (Only a type A port on the lighting adapter) Do those come with the SSD drives that have a type C output? Or is that an additional peripheral needed...
Could some one tell if it's strictly necessary to use the lightning to USB adapter to make it work? Or the new lightning drives (the ones with the lightning tip instead of Usb) connected direct to the lightning Port of iPad 7th gen would work?
Please, could you test the Sandisk USB 3.0 iXpand flash drive with iPadOS? It has a lighting connection and I wounder if it would be recognized by the iPad Air 3, as it has a low power consumption. I know it works with its own software (iXpand). But it would be much better if it would work directly in the native Files app. Thanks!
This no longer works. I have tried with iPad Pro, and it did work 9 months ago. I have tried it with iPad 8th generation and it will not work. Could apple update be the problem?
You have to have a powered adapter - say you have a USB to lightning adapter, you want the one that has a lightning port on it too - then you can plug a lightning cord to a wall adapter (or into a power bank) and then into the adapter. This will 'power' the adapter/ipad combo. If you hunt a bit on amazon, you can find USB to lightning that has 2 USB ports and a card slot - or HDMI to lightning but the MAIN thing is it has to have that lightning port ON the gizmo so you can power it. 2018 and up have that C port so isn't that just so easy... :(
Apple is so damned to make such expensive accessories which become a Must buy for people if they need to fully use the ipad....but even after paying a high price, the adapter has limitations....why wouldnt the adapter support the usb-c devices without extra power ? its so ridiculous...never buying or recommending apple products ever again
Other TH-camrs were saying you need a powered usb hub to get drives to work with ios, but they never attached power to the Apple adapter like you did. Is this an either or situation? ie. You don't need the powered usb hub but you need to add power to the adapter to use a single usb external drive. OR You don't need to power the adapter if you use a powered usb hub with the ability for multiple usb external drives to be attached.
It works just fine, but know that lighting port goes at a maximum speed of 480 megabits where as USB C iPads can do 10 gigabits I think. M1 iPads with thunderbolt USB c can do 40 gigabits.
hey! just got myself an iPad Air 2019 and I've been wondering if I could do the lightning to usb c dongle and then connect a usb c docking station to it
Me too. I've an iPad 6th generation with lightning connector and bought USB C hub. Connected using leads but iPad doesn't see HUB, dam! Will this adaptor sort my problem?
You’ll need to plug in a powered USB hub to use an HDD. That spinning disk mechanism requires more power than the iPad can provide. iPad->USB3 camera adapter->powered hub->multiple devices, including HDDs and input devices.
If the 120Hz refresh rate or the stereo speakers matters to you, go for the iPad Pro 10.5 otherwise go for the Air 3. It has a later chip, thus, will get software updates for much longer.
Which USB to Ethernet Adaptor do I need to work with iPad 10.5 Pro AND this camera Adaptor? USB-C to Ethernet or USBA to Ethernet? In other words once iPad is plugged into Lightening port on the nadaptor, what's left?
@Will H. Tech Review Did you get it to work? I’m thinking about buying a USB-C hub (because they have more options), but I can’t figure out if adapters restrict what you would be able to transfer (or anything else). Did it work like a normal USB-A cable when using an adapter?
I understand the expandability using the adapter, but this becomes too cumbersome- unless used strictly at home or office. By the way I like your channel.
Ok, so that seems perfect for me but I need an answer. With this full line of adapters, is there a limit of 100 mah to power up what we want to plug? And also, can you connect a usb type c hub? Anyone who answers this comment is a hero, I’ve benn looking for this for days
Do you know if on iPad 2018 an usb-c to USB adapter would work? I mean, without the extra power from an extern battery? (Because the one I might get only has the USB port) I'd thank so much your help with that 🙏🙏
The problem is the power pass thru doesn’t allow fast charge rate. I have the 12.9 iPad Pro (1st gen) and when I plug the apple 30 watt charger into the adapter it can’t keep up so the battery level goes down. Once I plug the apple 30w directly to iPad then it fast charges like normal.
Lightning to Camera USB connector is not available in my country, have you checked whether usc type c accessories work with previous ipads if we connect it through a lightning to usb-c female connector?
I’m still using my old iPad-Pro gen 1, first time connecting everything its work (in2021) but now it doesn’t work anymore. Idk how to fix it. Do you have any idea?
I am having the same problem with my ipad pro 10.5 after connecting it to external hard drive. If you find any solution, please let me know. Thanks in advance.
The adapter has 2 ports on it. 1 for connecting USB drives and 2nd for plugging into power... external power is needed in order for a drive to show up on an iPad with a lightning connector due its own power not being powerful enough to power itself and the drive @ same time.
Dmitrii Moscow This will work on any iPad with a lightning connector running iOS 13 (iPadOS). Yes, this works with any iPhone capable of running iOS 13 as well
Dmitrii Moscow ok, the 2 ports on this adapter are USB A and lightning. USB for connecting your drive(s) and the lightning to add power. If you wish to access data on your drives, you MUST plug in the lightning charge cable and wall adapter that you use with your lightning enabled iPhone/iPad in order for the drives you’re using in order for the drives to be seen by your device(s).
No matter how much a try, using the USB Apple adapter, external power and the SanDisk 2tb SSD, it is not show on the iPad Files. I can only see a 8tb thumb drive. Any suggetion? How can I troubleshoot? It is possible than I have a damaged adapter, just acquired from Walmart?
Hi. Will a non powered USB hub work if I supply power via the passthrough lightning? I want to connect an SD card & HDD at the same time to transfer files between them. Thanks for your great work, thumbs up.

Can you please let me know if it’s possible to do a mass upload of all of our photos (not on the iCloud Drive, on the iPad photos app itself) on the iPad Pro 10.5 to the SSD storage? I know you can bring things from the SSD to the iPad but I’m not sure if it’s interchangeable. Also is the “files” app that using iPad storage or iCloud storage?
So when you are looking for a power supply for your adapter do you just plug it into the wall or can I plug it into a power bank and it will still work. Great Vid!
I love someone that continues to serve even when folks throw shade. Thanks for teaching me so much.
This is exactly the video I was looking for! Thanks for having taken the time to make it for iPad Pro 10.5 inch users!

To my HORROR NONE of the FOLDERS I created were to be found on the storage device. Fearing the worst I connected the storage device to my MacPro and tried to find the folders I created there. I found files with the names of the folders I had created BUT these files WERE NOT folders, had odd file extensions in the name, and contained ZERO BYTES of information.
I got the hair brained idea of creating the folder structure on the storage device from the MacPro after deleting all of the garbage which I found there to see if there was any way the Files App just didn’t have the umph to do this function. I recreated folders for “My iPhone, my wife’s iPhone, my iPad, my wife’s iPad etc and started the process over again.
On the plus side I have been able to back up most all of my files into these folders onto the thumb drive which is where I started the process and then later disconnect everything and plug the thumb drive into any of these devices and access all of my backed up photos and videos, however with the SanDisk SSD I’d had little to no luck doing what was done on the video as I always get an error message stating no support or not enough power to use it.
2 further notes
1) if the iPhone or iPad slept the current group of photos and videos would NOT finish and would have to be redone
2) Not sure if the raw out of the box storage devices need some type of FORMATTING to work seamlessly with iPhones and iPads
My OPINION:
If iPhones and iPads are doing something they SHOULD NOT SLEEP
If devices NEED formatting they should say so
AND finally IF I selected AAALLLLLLLL of my files to transfer and start that process I should be able to have it complete regardless of the amount of time it takes until it is completed
The lightning port and the USB-C port look alot alike. Just by looking, it seems like you would directly plug the USB-C cable from your drive in the "little hole" that seems the same as the cable. It works just fine, but know that lighting port goes at a maximum speed of 480 megabits where as USB C iPads can do 10 gigabits I think.
M1 iPads with thunderbolt USB c can do 40 gigabits.
hey! just got myself an iPad Air 2019 and I've been wondering if I could do the lightning to usb c dongle and then connect a usb c docking station to it
hey, have you found the answer? we have the same problem.
I am looking for the same answers
Me too. I've an iPad 6th generation with lightning connector and bought USB C hub. Connected using leads but iPad doesn't see HUB, dam! Will this adaptor sort my problem?
So this means you can connect any kind of external hard drive including the bigger more powerful ones?
No hdd, only ssd
You’ll need to plug in a powered USB hub to use an HDD. That spinning disk mechanism requires more power than the iPad can provide. iPad->USB3 camera adapter->powered hub->multiple devices, including HDDs and input devices.
would this adapter work with transferring large pdf and word documents or no? Plz respond ASAP as this the answer to this is crucial to me.
As long as you set it up exactly as I said
Only for iPad PRO? Or other modern iPads too? Thanks,
Does this adapter work with external displays that support usb c?
The same question
Can we use this item for taking print from usb printers
0:40 what adapter is this? And where did you buy it?
You may want to show whole screen on your right side. You said it was a power source you were hooking up to ?
Apart from SSD’s you showed. Do WD portable external hard drives work as well?
Does that work for IPad air (3rd generation)?
Work but delay for gaming
Hi thanks, pls tell me can I connect a monitor by a USB C cable with USB in this adapter .
Would you mind giving some information on the black plastic stand that you are using to hold your iPad?
Great. Do you known if it’s works exactly the same with new iPad 8th gen?
Great vid!!! Would you recommend the refurbished iPad Pro 10.5 or the new iPad Air 3 2019?
If the 120Hz refresh rate or the stereo speakers matters to you, go for the iPad Pro 10.5 otherwise go for the Air 3. It has a later chip, thus, will get software updates for much longer.
I finally ordered this today & it will be here by Monday
Can we use wired keyboard with this ?
What are the 2 black adapters you are plugging into the SSD? Do they come with the drive? One
looks like male to male USB C?
Male to Male usb c, and yes it came with the SSD
With usb a adapter
Which USB to Ethernet Adaptor do I need to work with iPad 10.5 Pro AND this camera Adaptor? USB-C to Ethernet or USBA to Ethernet? In other words once iPad is plugged into Lightening port on the nadaptor, what's left?
Great to know, I was trying this with a aftermarket hub with no luck. Awesome, great video
@Will H. Tech Review
Did you get it to work? I’m thinking about buying a USB-C hub (because they have more options), but I can’t figure out if adapters restrict what you would be able to transfer (or anything else). Did it work like a normal USB-A cable when using an adapter?
Yo can u put an extra USB port machine in ? (So you don’t only have 1 usb, but multiples)
Can we connect usb c multiport hub ?? Please let me know
How can I connected my mause and keyboard to my iPad ? Please help me
Bluetooth
wait so what you mean by power is basically like "charging" the adapter right? since I see a USB-c port there
What is the usb a to usb c adapter that you are using to connect to the dongle?
I understand the expandability using the adapter, but this becomes too cumbersome- unless used strictly at home or office. By the way I like your channel.
Ok, so that seems perfect for me but I need an answer. With this full line of adapters, is there a limit of 100 mah to power up what we want to plug? And also, can you connect a usb type c hub? Anyone who answers this comment is a hero, I’ve benn looking for this for days
What would be the best way to move files or apps to a drive so I could free up space on actual iPad?
What cable did u use as the power source? I don’t have anything that fits into that small port, not even from other devices.
Do you know if on iPad 2018 an usb-c to USB adapter would work? I mean, without the extra power from an extern battery? (Because the one I might get only has the USB port)
I'd thank so much your help with that 🙏🙏
The problem is the power pass thru doesn’t allow fast charge rate. I have the 12.9 iPad Pro (1st gen) and when I plug the apple 30 watt charger into the adapter it can’t keep up so the battery level goes down. Once I plug the apple 30w directly to iPad then it fast charges like normal.
😂 you skipped the firmware update that makes it work properly. But glad u cleared it up.
Little questions would this ever work with the Arduino
Lightning to Camera USB connector is not available in my country, have you checked whether usc type c accessories work with previous ipads if we connect it through a lightning to usb-c female connector?
Elangovan Nagarajan I’m looking in that option too. Try to make the most of my USB C adapter.
I’m still using my old iPad-Pro gen 1, first time connecting everything its work (in2021) but now it doesn’t work anymore. Idk how to fix it. Do you have any idea?
My files app keeps hanging after I click copy. It's stopping me to browse a place to paste the file. Any idea why?
I am having the same problem with my ipad pro 10.5 after connecting it to external hard drive. If you find any solution, please let me know. Thanks in advance.
Another question, do you plug the external drive, mine has a usb c directly to the lightning or I need a usb A adaptor for it? Thank you
If you buy a lightning to HDMI adapter, can you hook this up to a monitor or is that only with the USB-C models?
Do you need to format the hard drive first?
Do you know if it works with printers? I have an iPad 8 and an epson L3110 🥺
Sir,
can the pdf , word , zip or other types of files also be transferred to / from the external storage devices into the iPad using this device?
Thank you so much
Please explain abt connecting to power using the other port. I am not clear.
The adapter has 2 ports on it. 1 for connecting USB drives and 2nd for plugging into power... external power is needed in order for a drive to show up on an iPad with a lightning connector due its own power not being powerful enough to power itself and the drive @ same time.
@Demitri Moscow As long as the iPad is receiving sufficient power, you’ll be good.
Dmitrii Moscow follow the instructions from this video if what I say are unclear.
Thank you very much from Spain.
It probably won't, you can't connect 2 at one time, I've tried
How can I connect external device to iPad Air 2 ?
I formatted the external hard drive ( seagate 4 Tera ) on ExFat
, but the external hard drive did not work on the iPad Air 2 (iOS 15) . What should I do ?
yesido gs12 otg adapter lightning … I use it
Werkt prima je moet wel de voeding zwaar nemen van Apple en dan werkt het prima geen probleem met mijn Samsung t5 en iPad Air 3 e generatie
I purchased an adapter for the dangle usb -c to female a but isn’t working
Does the thumbdrive work without power plugged in too?
christian jade valer
Thumb drive does not work without power plugged into it. The only things that work without power are accessories- keyboards, and USB mouse

After two weeks of wracking my brain with my lightning cable ! guess I’ll have to get one!
Hey man where did u got this cable? I couldn’t find it on Apple website
So when you are looking for a power supply for your adapter do you just plug it into the wall or can I plug it into a power bank and it will still work. Great Vid!
I tried with a 10W power bank, it didn’t work. :( It’s best to use the power brick that came with the iPad or if you have a powerbank with higher W.
Patricia Figueroa Thanks for the info!
Can you watch movies purchased through iTunes from an SSD?
Does it work with the first iPad Pro 2017 model? Software version 13.1.3. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
